What’s a girl to do when she falls in love with the man whose mission it is to bring her down?

With the murder of her only sister, Sara, just a few months past, Lily Valier—a woman of beauty and substance—tops the sheriff’s list of suspects in small town Maine, and for a very good reason. Dear old Dad had willed his fortune to Sara and only Sara, leaving Lily to fend for herself. However, with no murder weapon or witnesses, the evidence against Lily is only circumstantial.

Enter P.I. Aiden O’Rourke, black-haired and blue-eyed, charged with gaining Lily’s trust and learning her secrets, all to finally get the goods on her. Things move fast and feelings run deep, yet when Lily discovers the truth about Aiden, everything begins to come apart.

Aiden’s torn. Despite his feelings for her, Lily is the most logical suspect, with a great big fat motive. Except something’s not quite right. Aiden trusts his instincts and they’re screaming at him to have a look at a former suspect with far more to hide than first appeared. With little left to lose, Lily decides to stand her ground, and staying put has its consequences when the murder weapon finally turns up—and it’s Lily’s gun.

What happens to love, when trust is betrayed?

This book proves that you don’t need to know every little secret about a person to fall for them…

Lily Valier is a woman who lives life in in simplicity. She has a small business and keeps to herself – until her sister Sara is murdered and Lily finds herself on the top of the suspect list and is now the talk of the town. Lily, as a character, was very easy to admire. She never showed her fear to those who talked about her behind her back and those who believed the lies surrounding her sisters murder.

P.I Aiden O’Rourke is brought in from Chicago to help the investigation with one goal – to sweet talk Lily into spilling her secrets. After all, that was what the police told him, that she was guilty. The depth in Aiden’s storyline was brilliant. As new information surfaced thought the story I found myself stuck in a love/hate relationship with him. I loved how I couldn’t tell if he was a good cop or a bad cop, I just couldn’t put the book down until I figured him out.

I hooked on to this story from the very first page. Ms Bannon wasted no time in getting straight into the plot. This fast-past novel left me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The writing style of jumping between Aiden and Lily’s point of view was fantastic and has to be one of my favourite writing techniques. The plot twists in this novel were so incredible and I found myself bitting my nails – anxious to see what happens next.

I recommend Nowhere to Run to the mystery readers out there as it proved itself to be a very interesting read and one I really enjoyed.

I always think the first and last book you read each year should be extra special so I’m glad I got to read this new one from Jill Mansell. I’ll admit I’ve never disliked any of her stories and this one was no exception.

If you’ve never read anything by the author let me start by saying if you love sometimes quirky and not your run of the mill characters, you’ll enjoy the author’s writing. This particular story is also filled with tears, laughter, and generally puts a smile on your face on a cold winter’s day.

I loved all the characters but have to say I did find myself longing for more scenes with the hero Josh. He’s kind and honest and you share his frustration when Sophie isn’t showing any interest in him. You feel yourself shouting at the pages, saying Sophie, this guy’s perfect for you.

However, part of the enjoyment of reading this story grows from the author’s clever plotting of having everyone else wanting someone they can’t have or someone who only has eyes for someone else. It has you turning the pages to find out if Ms. Mansell was kind enough to give everyone the happy ending you craved. Sometimes things didn’t work out but I found myself reading the last sentence of the book with a smile on my face.

One added bonus for me was the setting of Cornwall. It’s mostly mysteries or romantic suspense stories I see set there so this was a nice change of pace. The author did a great job describing it and the hotel that Josh runs. Despite its 400 plus pages, this story clips along at a steady pace and is sadly done before you realize it.

If like me you take extra time selecting that first or last book of any year, I’d recommend this one.

The murder of Elizabeth’s mother has never been solved and now many years later, Cory decides to look into the murder with the hopes that she can give her friend some peace and closure, something that she herself has yet to find.

Cory is a very likeable protagonist. She has great investigative skills and she will do anything for her friend. Unfortunately, her skills turn out to be too good and the murderer feels threatened by her investigation. Soon both Cory and Elizabeth are in danger.

The suspense builds slowly at first and then picks up, turning this novel into a real page-turner. There are several action-packed chase scenes, all done without any cars, which had me holding my breath as I read.

In addition to the actual mystery and all the tension that builds around its solution, I was also very impressed by the handling of the tragedies in both young women’s lives. The characters felt very real and I sympathized with both of them. The tragedies were handled with great compassion and empathy.

Without giving away any spoilers, I’ll just say that the solution to the mystery was truly hair-raising and the reader knows the answers long before Cory does, which increased the tension for me, since I could see Cory walking into danger but obviously I had no way to stop her.

False Alibi is a gripping mystery which will not disappoint mystery lovers.

Awaking in the forest, a young maiden recalls naught—including her name. Equally conflicting is her desire to both slap and kiss Sir Galeron, the knight who claims to have protected her while she was unconscious. Much to her chagrin, he dubs her “Ruby of the Forest” due to her red hair, and insists she find refuge at his home of Ramstone. Prickling at his demanding ways, but with no other option, she accepts his offer. And although his kiss flames her attraction even more, Galeron dashes it with a confession. The brute is trothed to another.

Ruby’s journey is filled with laughter and weeping, daydreams and discovered abilities. But never does she feel complete. Her heart longs for a future that her past may destroy. Evil lurks, treading on each tidbit of memory she recovers. Will Ruby ever recall her past? And after an attack in the village that sparks a horrific nightmare, does she even want to?

Her memories would either bring madness … or respite from dreams filled with terror, blood and death.

Sir Galeron, Eldest son of Lord Ramstone finds a beautiful woman in the forest devoid of any memories. Inspired by the color of her hair and her fiery nature, Galeron dubs her Ruby. The attraction between Galeron and Ruby’s relationship build’s up and changes.

When Ruby meets Galeron in the forest the attraction is instant. But their relationship isn’t easy. It’s filled with slow returning memories that are fuzzy and more than a healthy dose of danger. From the first page both characters entranced me. The premise was exciting and it kept me reading and envisioning every upcoming moment of the book.

There was a main plot as well as a couple of subplots. When I started reading I questioned my decision to read a long Historical Romance. Sometimes long novels tend to meander about and bore me. It didn’t happen in this book since there was always something happening. Even the simplest actions captured my attention and held it.

Ruby’s memories, who she was and what happened to her, was very well constructed but I do think that the suspense of her memories should have been revealed a lot earlier. It was very much exasperating when I knew who she was (though I had no idea what happened and didn’t remotely have any idea until the climax) and had to wait for more than 200+ pages for the other characters to find out or even suspect anything.

That being said this book is filled with humor, sadness, happiness, terror…… anything and everything in between. Ruby is a headstrong and independent woman and it shows. But she is also tarnished with the memory or the lack of memory that makes her very much question everything. Moreover, I think there was a lack of descriptiveness about the surroundings, though the emotions were descriptive and touching.

I have to warn sensitive readers, this book does contain scenes of torture that some may find graphic and particularly disturbing.

This book is a romance but it’s also so much more; there’s also regret, forgiveness, strength and hope. I would very much recommend it to anyone with a love of Historical Romance.

Callen, handsomer, wealthier, and more seductive than ever, falls in love with Jameson all over again. But, hungry to rekindle what they once had, he hides one devastating truth.

The tone and atmosphere of this novel sucked me right into the story from the very beginning, all the way to the end.

Twelve years after the tragic death of her good friend, Dancie, Jameson returns to Blue Chimney Estate for a dedication ceremony honoring her friend. She had left under a cloud of suspicion and although she remembered finding her friend’s body, she has no memory of what lead up to her death. Although most everyone agrees Jameson should never have come back, it is important she clear her name once and for all.

Being back at Blue Chimney after all this time and seeing all her old friends, and a former lover, has Jameson experiencing flashbacks about the night her friend died. Slowly she begins to piece together what actually happened that night, revealing an incredible, shocking revelation that will knock Jameson’s world off its axis forcing her to face truths she has buried for twelve long years. But, someone will work very hard to make sure Jameson doesn’t live long enough to reveal the truth.

Jameson’s initial discomfort sets the stage for a tense and edgy suspense novel that kept me riveted. The tension builds at an agonizing pace, as long buried secrets slowly begin to reveal themselves.

The only flaw in the story was that Jameson seemed to walk into a few too many convenient eavesdropping opportunities where she was able to obtain information she felt might be relevant to the crime or even information about Callen, her old lover.

I found the flashbacks to be more effective and described very vividly, just like a person would really feel if a painful, long buried memory kept trying to resurface. As desperately as Jameson wanted the truth , she was also scared and worried about what she might remember, and the flashbacks often left her confused and disoriented. Despite her fears, Jameson was determined to face her past and I admired her courage and tenacity.

Every person seemed like a viable suspect and I could never settle on one person, try as I might. So, I admit, I couldn’t wait to see what happened next and wound up reading this in one afternoon.

I love old secrets and buried memories and love affairs being rekindled against the backdrop of a small community. I also love cold case mysteries and the satisfaction of knowing justice will finally be served. If you like romantic suspense that uses a psychological edge to build suspense you will really like this one. Well done.

Sounds odd to read that, doesn’t it? Sinfully Ever After is one of those rare books that is nothing like I expected and so much better. Yes, Rebecca, the heroine, comes off as a little much. She’s very modern for her times, but I liked that. She was freer than the other characters. I liked her spunk.

I don’t know a whole lot about historicals. I’m not looking for nitpicky details. I want to get lost in the story. That said, I get a little irritated with the conventions that because someone kissed in public, the couple must be engaged, but I understand. It was the convention of the time. The way Ms Fresina handled the situation was great. I felt the passion between Luke and Rebecca instantly and wanted to see them get their happy ending.

If you want a story that will grip you from page one and won’t let go until far after the end, then this might be the book for you. I enjoyed it a lot.

Ellie Dickerson becomes a contract mail order bride to a Texas rancher. She agrees to marry to on one condition. Her sister gets to stay with them. However, upon arrival she finds out that her fiancé is dead.

Erik takes a promise from his younger brother Kage on his death bed, to marry his fiancé. A promise to a dying man is binding. Though Kage made the promise he is not willing to marry a city gal. Nonetheless he is willing to take care and make sure she and her sister have a home.

Kage wants a rancher wife. And is dead set that Ellie doesn’t have what it takes to become one.

Through it all, there is someone lurking eager to do anything, even kill to get what he wants.

Will their love conquer?

I was pretty surprised from the first chapter in how different the sisters were from each other. Ellie is a social butterfly. Much more comfortable interacting with other people in dinners and parties than being in the kitchen or cleaning. However, she gets no choice when her fiancé dies. The simple truth is, they can’t go back from where they came. She sets herself to become the kind of rancher wife that Kage wants. Ellie is very stubborn. She makes a drastic transformation to become and survive being on a ranch.

I loved reading how she changed herself. Learning different tasks. Trying again and again until she gets it right. This is a Historical western romance novel. I expected guns and animals and all aspects of ranch life. I got all of that and more. The writing set the scene put me in the story. It was not only romance, for me there were times that made me smile like a fool while other times I couldn’t contain the tears. There was a myriad of emotions to be felt while reading.

If a book can make you feel things then it’s a very good book. This is a very good book.

Mail Order Ruckus by Jacquie Rogers

Matt Johannsen, cousin to Kage returns to the ranch that they built together before Kage had to go back to take care of his Erik’s ranch.

Laura Dickerson, older sister to Ellie, is set on having Matt choose her for his bride; for that, she contracts to become a mail order bride in the same town where Matt lives.

Matt is hesitant to marry with his ranch taking all of the money that he makes. But he is put in a very tight place when he sees Laura with all the other brides. Laura is bound to get married, to him or someone else.

More, there is someone who wants to destroy Matt and his ranch.

Laura Dickerson met and fell in love with Matt. However, Matt is adamant. He will marry after one or two years after his ranch has gotten profit. Though this decision is taken out of his hands. I very much liked seeing how everyone came together and plotted behind his back so that Laura has every resource and advantage to get him married to her.

There was something about how the how the animals are depicted in these stories. It was terrifically funny. It really added a comic relief layer to the stories that kept them from being overly dramatic or serious.

It also portrays other mail order brides and their road to love. They find their love and it is entwined with Laura’s. I loved hearing the other bride’s stories. It is written in a way that the reader knows that Laura is the main character and the other brides are the secondary.

Perfect book to unwind at the end of the day and get lost.

But then the unthinkable happens: Skylar journeys to the wrong marina and misses the reunion boat…

Skylar Robinson is keeping her promise. All through her final year in high school she tried to show Luke Zemackis how interested she was in him, but circumstances always kept them going in opposite directions. On their last meeting they agreed to meet again in five years’ time if either were interested in something more. But Skylar got her addresses mixed up and she found herself forty miles away from their rendezvous. Panicked, she races to meet Luke and hopes desperately that he’s still waiting for her.

This is a sweet story that jumps back in time and spends the first half of the story as a flashback, explaining the circumstances as to why Skylar is rushing to meet Luke. While the storytelling is very sweet – almost innocent – it felt strange for such a short story to be half told as a recapping of past actions. I feel the author might have done better to start us in that past time – full of high school hopes and innocent crushes blooming into more – and then jumped ahead to five years’ time. That is just my personal preference but I feel it would have lent the story more an air of “in the present” and action/showing – not telling. Skylar’s humour and good sense of fun, however, shines through and her character is a delight. Luke is a little harder to read – a shy, studious high school boy and a serious teenager growing into a man. He’s attractive, but I didn’t feel the “zing” usually present in romance heroes. This possibly was due to the story being told from Skylar’s point of view, or perhaps the fact that for so much of the story they were in the “flashback” mode and kids – five years younger.

I loved the author’s story-telling voice. A clear, simple tone that helps showcase the innocence and simplicity of both Skylar and Luke to perfection. While I found a few things a little unrealistic (like the constant mentioning of “yes I’ll go out with you, unless I get a boyfriend”) the story left me feeling good and warm, with a smile and very happy. Appropriate for teens and older who are interested in sweet, happy romances but not wanting anything too heavy. Aside from a few descriptive kisses at the end I found this story to be really lovely, with nothing sexy or shocking.

A great short story, one I’d recommend for readers looking for something happy and on the sweeter side. Lovely.

As CEO of The Maitland Company and the last in a long line of inventors, Siegfried might forget to eat or sleep, but he can’t forget Paige Porter. For once he might have to put aside his all-consuming research for a new venture: Project Paige. Because when he saw her he knew: It Had to Be You.

It Had to Be You really does prove that opposites attract.

It Had to Be You is a very fun read. Paige Porter is a very strong female character that has a very clear goal for what she want to do with her life – build up her wedding planning business and buy her very own home. She doesn’t want to end up like her Mother and rely on anyone, especially a man. Enter Siegfried, a geeky awkward boy genius that can’t focus on anything for long periods of time, except on Paige.

The character development in this book is really good. Although I would of liked to have more detailed back stories I got to get a sense of what made the characters the way they are. This included the back stories of some of the supporting characters, which I really enjoyed.

Ms Simmons has created a lovely novel that has me wishing that I – like Paige – got accepted into a very fun and eccentric family like the Maitland family. They accepted her as part of the family and gave her everything – even if she didn’t ask.

I recommended this novel to all those who love romantic comedies.
