Divine intervention. That’s all Penny asks. Freedom from overwork and mountainous debt. She sings songs of praise, chants like a yogi, and rubs her belly like Buddha until the crystal charm on her navel shimmers, all hoping to draw the attention of someone—anyone—“up there.”

In the west, beyond the seas, from the place between Heaven and Earth, an immortal hears Penny’s cries. Once a renowned Viking warrior, Gunnar has been cast into eternal servitude by an angry god. Now, while Penny sleeps, he comes to Earth to grant her wishes. But Penny is about to wake up, and so is every desire she’s ever known. To claim their fairy-tale ending, Gunnar must find a way to clear his name. Not only must his sword arm and courage stay strong, but their powerful love must cross the divide of a thousand years.

Gunnar does dishes! Penny makes a wish and it comes true beyond her wildest dreams. If only we could all be so lucky.

Beautiful Penny Farnsworth is a hardworking waitress and college student trying to make ends meet, but with a student loan hanging over her head and a worthless boyfriend in tow, life is spiraling downward.

Swoon-worthy Miguel, boyfriend and hopeful male model, has it made with Penny. She cooks, cleans, and financially supports him – she evens lusts after him. But when the story opens, Penny has already decided that her “slob and a mooch” of a boyfriend needs to get out of her trailer and out of her life. She wastes no time in throwing his belongings out the door. “Adios, Miguel.”

As a student of literature and mythology, exasperated Penny stands amid the mess in her trailer left by Miguel and looks to the heavens pleading, “Can anyone up there hear me? Will someone help me out?” The author explains, “She asked the questions as if up there held mystical realms where gods, elves, and fairies took pity on human suffering.” Excellent!

Soon, Penny begins to rub the “crystal pendant at her navel” while chanting “Om.” This scene is sure to make any reader smile, but we all know what happens next … Disappointed Penny goes to bed, alone, a little weepy, exhausted, and no better off than she was before.

However, later that night the sounds of banging pots and pans startle Penny out of a deep sleep. She is up and headed for the kitchen with plans of giving her ex-boyfriend a good tongue-lashing for coming back, but instead of Miguel, she finds a gorgeous goddess of a man – and he’s doing her dishes! Meet Gunnar, an immortal who once was a Viking warrior, now cast into servitude as a Light Elf, who has been sent by the god Freyr in answer to Penny’s call.

If you’ve ever dreamed of the perfect man, Gunnar is probably him. He is kind, compassionate, brave, and loyal. He is also beautiful, both inside and out, and his talents are unsurpassed, none more so than in Penny’s bedroom.

On the downside, the romance between Penny and Gunnar felt too rushed for my tastes. I would have preferred more buildup before they found their way to the bedroom. I’m not even sure I had a clear picture of what they were wearing, or know much about Penny’s overall appearance. So, a few more pages adding visualizations would have been especially nice. There were also a few minor formatting mishaps and editing slip-ups, such as some omitted and/or extraneous words, which have a way of proving to your subconscious that you’re reading a story rather than living it.

Plain and simple, this story is FUN! It is a quick read (only 90 pages) and is hard to beat when looking for a lively and sensual tale. If you like romance, mythology, or real-life relationship stories (Miguel) or tales of godlike immortal love (Gunnar), this story should not be missed!

Unfortunately for Deacon, Marlee recently hardened her heart and swore off men, especially handsome ones with boy-next-door grins. But as Marlee and Deacon attempt to identify and prevent the bomber from detonating the device, they discover that love may be the most explosive force of all.

Bombs are dangerous everywhere, but they’re even more deadly on a space station. Will Marlee and Deacon Black be able to diffuse this one before its too late?

Henry was a hilarious little robot. I especially liked hearing him talk about what he thought was happening when he first reported his robotic heart attack to Marlee. It was both a fun conversation and a nice glimpse of things to come. The scenes that included him in any way were by far the best ones in the story. Henry really was the heart and soul of this tale.

The main human characters often made illogical decisions that I didn’t understand at all. I would have like to see more attention paid to why they made these choices and whether my impressions of what kind of people they were based on their reactions to these scenes were actually what the author was intending to show the audience. It was never quiet clear to me if my assumptions about these characters were accurate based on the clues I found in how they did and didn’t handle certain situations.

The dialogue was well done. This isn’t the kind of situation that lends itself to a great deal of talking, so I was glad to see the characters keep their conversations short and to the point. They said exactly what they needed to say and then moved on to trying to solve the problem at hand. This was a smart way to write it!

I’d recommend Hearts Akilter to anyone who likes humorous science fiction.

She finds friendship and help at the hands of his first wife, a Cherokee captive called Pretty Shield.

When Thunder Eye’s comes to rescue his betrothed, she begs him to take her newfound friend along, and the two women eventually become sisters-in-law. When the Crow come to extract their revenge, fate changes their destiny in a big way.

Her excitement is high and her mother is hopeful that she will be one of those chosen, but before the ceremony begins, a handsome young brave named Thunder Eyes follows Yellow Moon when she is sent for water. The two are drawn together from the very beginning into a relationship worthy of reading.

Thunder Eyes is the son of Chief Black Bear from the Santee tribe, and he is next in line for chiefdom. That makes him a pretty good catch for Yellow Moon! He offers blankets, a carved smoking pipe, and the promise of seven horses for the hand of their eldest daughter. A good trade, so the young woman’s parents choose Thunder Eyes as her future husband. As soon as the Sun Dance ceremony ends, Yellow Moon rides off with Thunder Eyes. Just the few days they have together on the trip back to his tribe, the two form a lovely bond, but before long the Crow attack and Yellow Moon is stolen.

Pretty Shields, a woman stolen long ago from her Cheyenne tribe, is the Crow leader’s current wife, but he decides he needs a second wife. Yellow Moon and Pretty Shields form a strong friendship and the two end up staying together for the duration of the book.

Although accurate, some of the vernacular used in the book, such as pale face, tom-toms, and Hau, gave an unwanted cliché and commercial feel to the novel, especially when, “’Taku eniciyapi he?’ He asked her name” has set the scene for the reader. Also a bit disappointing were events that deserved space in this story, for example, a much anticipated wedding ceremony passed with, “after they were officially declared husband and wife…” I felt cheated by not being able to see the ceremony, or know what the groom thought of the bride in her white doeskin decorated with turquoise, or even who attended the joining. The story would have fared better had it been further developed. Lastly, the story’s culmination seemed rushed and was unfulfilling.

The best of this story was its characters who were thoroughly alive for me. Some polishing and another one hundred pages expounding upon the story would have made this a real winner.

If you like Native American love stories, this quick read will take you to another time and place and allow you to meet people you’ll want to remember.

When a single moment challenges your perception of truth…

Epigraphist Dr. Essie DeSpencer travels to an ancient Welsh castle in order to decipher an Ogham inscription discovered by the handsome and enigmatic, Garreth ap Daffyd. But the journey is not what she expects. She doesn’t plan to fall for the Lord of the castle, or to find herself deeply entrenched in legends, myths, and magic. Real legends, and real magic, that have devastating consequences.
Both these physical cialis properien effects are explained in detail below. Garreth didn’t plan for Essie to stay any longer than it took her to decipher the pictograph. Instead, he finds himself falling in love for the first time in his very long life. Now the Lord of Llys y Gwalch must find a way to attain the heart of his soul mate and keep her safe from the dangers that threaten them both.

Can Garreth and Essie save the land without losing each other?

I really enjoyed all the myth and magic surrounding Garreth and his land. I must say I was very surprised that Essie was able to figure out Garreth’s secret so quickly. However, she is a very intelligent woman, so it makes sense that Garreth wouldn’t be able to fool her for long. In fact, I found his honesty about not only his situation, but the cycles of disaster plaguing his realm quite refreshing. Since Essie didn’t have to worry about any deception from Garreth, she was able to really focus on deciphering the inscription and dig deep into the legends of the land.

Garreth’s honesty also made it possible for he and Essie to work very closely together. The more time they spent together, the stronger their bond became. Their chemistry is like a slow burn always just under the surface. I also enjoyed their teasing banter. The game over figuring out Essie’s true name was always a source of amusement. Some of the possibilities Garreth and his friends came up with had me laughing out loud. Another reason Essie and Garreth are such a good couple is Garreth ability to balance Essie. She has a tendency to obsess about her work to the point of not eating or resting enough. Garreth is also very serious about their work, but he also knows the value of taking time to relax and coming back to a task refreshed and renewed. However, both Garreth and Essie have rather disturbing dreams that seem to suggest they might lose each other while trying to prevent the next disaster. Will they lose the love they’ve only just discovered?

I would have liked to know a bit more about the villain of this tale. As Essie and Garreth work to solve the mystery, there is someone in the shadows with their own reasons for wanting the inscription deciphered. However once this character was unmasked, the reasons given for their actions were remarkably simple I found this surprising as this person would have had to conceal their nefarious intentions for hundreds of years. For someone to be so deceitful for so long, I would have expected more complex motives.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Court of the Hawk. Ms. Peterson has created a beautiful world, and Essie and Garreth are a wonderful couple. Fans of fantasy romance won’t want to miss this enchanting tale.

Vacations are supposed to be relaxing. This one doesn’t quite fit the bill.

The character development in this tale was well done. I could clearly picture what both Cameron and Jocelyn were like as individuals, especially as the pacing sped up and their personalities began to strongly influence the choices they made. It was even more interesting to see how their flaws were woven into the narrative as the author clearly seemed to spend a lot of time showing the audience who these characters were as human beings.

It would have been helpful to have a more detailed explanation of what was going on in the woods. Everything was covered so hastily that I didn’t completely understand what was happening. There were a few plot holes that I was never able to fill in at all because they were addressed so quickly. I wanted to give this story a much higher rating because the premise was was interesting. Had I better understood these sections, I would have felt comfortable doing so.

They hailed her “Liberty,” but she was free only to obey—or die.

Betrayed by her father and sold as payment of a Roman tax debt to fight in Londinium’s arena, gladiatrix-slave Rhyddes feels like a wild beast in a gilded cage. Celtic warrior blood flows in her veins, but Roman masters own her body. She clings to her vow that no man shall claim her soul, though Marcus Calpurnius Aquila, son of the Roman governor, makes her yearn for a love she believes impossible.

Groomed to follow in his father’s footsteps and trapped in a politically advantageous betrothal, Aquila prefers the purity of combat on the amphitheater sands to the sinister intrigues of imperial politics, and the raw power and athletic grace of the flame-haired Libertas to the adoring deference of Rome’s noblewomen.

When a plot to overthrow Caesar ensnares them as pawns in the dark design, Aquila must choose between the Celtic slave who has won his heart and the empire to which they both owe allegiance. Trusting no man and knowing the opposite of obedience is death, the only liberty offered to any slave, Rhyddes must embrace her arena name—and the love of a man willing to sacrifice everything to forge a future with her.

Liberty opens with the sorry plight of Celtic teen Rhyddes; a Celt in a land conquered by the Romans. Though her name meant freedom, she was little more than a slave: almost a slave to her own family.

Liberty immediately seizes the reader’s attention and sympathy. Rhyddes’ Father is tough and demanding- he is with all his children. Still Rhyddes demonstrates caring and courage right off the bat. She protects brother Owen to her own cost and, farmhand though she is, we also see she’s a good fighter when need arises. She establishes her value, and we readers assume that events will transpire that allow her family to see her value, as well. We can only hope…

She proves worth more to others. Suddenly, those hard days with a pitchfork in her hands will serve her well….

Meanwhile, another character is introduced, long before their actual meeting. Marcus, who one might well imagine fared better as one of the conquerors, also suffers from parental disapproval. He’s headstrong, proud and tough, but he too has to answer for every action.

Rhyddes’ survival has given her both strength and defiance. Unalike as the two might seem, they are both strong, in their own way, but when they meet, events seem to turn against them. Indeed, circumstances must keep them apart, although we cannot but keep hoping for different circumstances!

I was troubled throughout as to why our main character started off in such disfavor with her father. Although the author leaves no string untied by the end, it seemed like a long wait to get the answer. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The setting, characters and action were all interesting and well-presented.

Ms. Headlee’s straightforward writing style is not intrusive but is descriptive. The overall plot seems distant and in truth, we see this history from just one little corner of it. This is very character-driven story with sweet moments and occasional humor. Rhyddes’ connection to and sympathy for her family members is a constant. I really liked the characters. I wouldn’t say every romance fan will love this, but if you are looking for a bit of unpredictable action with your romance, you might find Liberty just perfect.

Constantly traveling for work-related reasons doesn’t leave a lot of time for a personal life. Is this about to change for Devi?

One of the things I enjoyed the most about reading this book was learning about the different types of dragons and what it takes to defeat them. The plot took the time to explain this part of Devi’s occupation in detail every time the pace slowed down enough to talk about topics other than what was happening in the moment. Her work is dangerous and unpredictable. Knowing so much about what she was trying to accomplish on her mission with Noeme only made me like both characters more.

There were a few minor pacing issues. Conflicts that I thought were going to carry on until the end were resolved much more quickly than I expected them to. Their solutions did make sense, but the transition from the old conflicts to what worried the characters later on was a little abrupt at times. With that being said, this is a minor criticism of an otherwise fun and engaging tale.

The narrator gave Noeme and Devi the opportunity to get to know each other before anything even remotely romantic began to occur. I liked seeing them interact as colleagues and friends first as it added an extra layer of meaning to later scenes. This was a smart decision. It really made me hope they’d end up together.

I’d recommend Slaying Dragons to fans of romance and historical fantasy stories alike. It blends both genres together beautifully!

The problem is Percy has once again gotten himself into a pickle. How is he to romance his lovely Georgiana when another woman believes him to be her long-lost husband? Will Percy be able to disentangle himself from the other woman before he loses Georgiana for good?

Truly, author Ruth J Hartman has demonstrated an amazing skill in creating charming, but utterly unique and original characters.

In His Lady Peregrin we discover Percy Radcliff; bird fancier, almost a would-be bird himself. Oh, the matter-of-fact way we discover Percy’s deepest wishes! Off beat, funny and yet, so appropriate to this story. Events move right along and the quality of the characters certainly contributes.

Lady Georgiana Ollerton is remarkable for her looks. Oh, she’s not a sweet engaging lass at all, for these two are quite mature adults, and yet, there it is…she resembles…well…I’ll leave it to readers to discover the Lady’s looks for themselves. She is remarkable. Percy also notes that she is “sarcastic, blunt, and demanding”; safe to say, this is not your typical ‘match made in heaven.’ Yet, though things ought to go as easily as falling out of a tree, there are complications. A certain other lady (that woman!) has her sights set on Radcliff…too. She’s something of a character herself.

I do wish the cover somehow reflected the unique qualities in this story.  It’s appropriate for the time, but not as unique as what’s contained within.

Throughout, events are unpredictable, conversation is often light and humorous, and even secondary characters contribute. Quirky, fun and fast-moving, mark this one a Must Read.

Can the happy-go-lucky shenanigans of the retirement community remind Margie and Sam that falling in love has no age limit?

It’s never too late to try again, but only time will tell if Sam and Margie succeed at rekindling their love.

The chemistry between Sam and Margie was incredibly strong. I really enjoyed seeing them interact because those scenes felt so genuine. One of the most important things I look for in a good romance novel is some sort of sign that the characters involved in it have also developed a close friendship with each other. This is definitely something that Margie and Sam know something about. Seeing it only made me root for them even more!

With that being said, I was confused by some of their interactions. These characters have been together for many years, so it was hard to believe that they’d have as many problems communicating with one another as they did. It would have been really helpful to have some indication of why this was so as it wasn’t at all what I would expect to see from two people who otherwise seem like such an excellent match.

My favorite character was Gladys, Sam’s mother. Almost all of the most memorable scenes in this story involved her because of how she interacted with her son and daughter-in-law. This character was so well-developed that I almost feel like I’ve met her before. She was definitely a highlight of the plot for me. While I don’t know if the author is planning to write a sequel, I hope Ms. Vaughn will consider including a few glimpses of what Gladys is up to if she does.

Seeing You Again made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I’d recommend it to anyone else who also enjoys having this reaction to a book.
