Honestly, this was a really good read. I didn’t realize it was the second book in a series until after I finished it. I sensed it was, so wasn’t surprised when I found out it indeed was part of a series. There was a sense of family and community that I connected with. Now, knowing that I missed the first book, I want to go back and start from the beginning.

I can report that Fast Lane was an entertaining read with super “cool” leading characters. The heroine is a NASCAR race car driver and the hero is a paramedic – a pretty awesome combination with so much potential to make a riveting story. While I can’t say it completely met its potential, I can say that it was a pleasant read. The heroine’s name was Trinity Calhoun and she is full of sass and strength with a touch of vulnerability. The hero’s name is Reece Balmain. He’s a bit weak and he can’t make up his mind in the difficult situation that he’s in. Reece made the story feel like a head banger with his “woe is me what should I do” attitude. I prefer my leading men to be confident.

Overall it was a heartwarming story involving several well-developed characters that were easy to relate to. As I said, I’d like to go back to the first book so I can get to know all other characters better that were present in Fast Lane. As much as this could be considered a standalone book, I felt that I was missing a connection that was developed earlier in the series.

If the synopsis sounds interesting to you then I’d recommend giving this book a chance. Reece and Trinity touched my heart and I am glad that I got to share their happily ever after love story.

I was hooked by the end of the first chapter. First of all, any book that mentions a possibility of a character going to Ireland already earns a star. When Kate makes a wish it’s just a question of how literal that wish will be taken. I was able to complete the book in two days.

Obviously, this would make the characters seem real and even relatable, just like they are in this book.

This is the first book by Susan B. James that I read, and I’m so glad I did. She got me believing in “Irish Magic”.

Sally and Ross are good characters. They’re everything I’d want in a firefighter and paramedic. Dedication to the job and personable, they’re great. Ross is the guy who gets things done and Sally’s got determination, too. The sparks between them are off the charts. I rooted for them to get together and raced through this book to see what would happen next.

There are forces trying to keep Sally and Ross apart and I liked how the author handled the situations.

I met Kody in the first book in the First Response series, but I didn’t need to read that book to know what’s going on. Kody and his daughter, Lucy, are happy enough. Kody isn’t looking for a relationship. Then Dr. Sandra shows up on the scene. I loved the chemistry between them and rooted for Kody and Sandra to get together. I liked the set of circumstances the author throws at the characters and how they work out the problems.

If you’re looking for a fresh take on the surprise pregnancy trope, then give this book a try. Recommended.

It is a well-written story, produced by an author who knows the era. It comes across as very realistic. Rowena is constantly worried that the Royalists will not be victorious and what will become of her and her family if the “Rebels” win the war. We readers, knowing the outcome of the war, can’t help but to worry for this lovable character, whatever side we sympathize with. The author has done a good job of showing that people on both sides were complicated and not all good or bad.

Occasionally Rowena has a thought of understanding for the rebel side, making readers wonder how far this will go in the end. Details of espionage and intrigue keep those pages turning. This is an exciting historical novel well worth the read.

I knew going in this would be a good read. I’ve read other books by Susan Carlisle and wasn’t let down. The writing was crisp and moved along well. I’m looking forward to more books in the Pups that Make Miracles Series.

The narrator in this book had a wonderful sense of humor. One of the coolest things about it was that they appeared to be aware of the genre they were working with and made many sly references to what an audience expects from a mystery. I giggled my way through these references as I waited to find out what would happen to the characters next.

There were times when I found it tricky to follow the plot because of how many times it slowed down to explain something that was loosely related to what the characters were currently experiencing. While these asides were often pretty funny as I mentioned above, there were so many of them that it was hard to stay focused on the main point of the storyline.

One of the things the narrator did a very good job of was subverting the audience’s expectations. There are certain tropes in the mystery genre that most people who are familiar with it will expect to see. It was amusing to take note of the narrator’s creative twists on these tropes, especially when it came to the audience’s expectations of what a government agent should be like. While this was firmly rooted in the suspense genre, the author also wasn’t afraid to borrow liberally from many other genres in order to make things fit together. The combination of that alongside the reinvention of tropes made this a memorable read for sure.

Tales of Adventure with Nap Lapkin should be read by anyone who enjoys a tongue-in-cheek approach to the mystery genre.

However, I was able to set aside my doubts and put his acceptance of modern living down to the fact that he has an inventor’s soul. Watching him learn about modern conveniences was a lot of fun!

The passages describing the storm on the ship were excellent. “The force of the wind and the rain made it hard to breathe… Lightning ripped apart the clouds overhead. Barrels, broken free from their ropes, rolled across the planks covered by streaming water.” When I finished reading the stormy sections, it was like coming up for air!

Athena and the other characters in “A Shawl for Janice” left their EcoTower to do a bird count in nearby forests and meadows that had sprung up from the ruins of small towns after the Change. Ms. Almazan did a wonderful job with her world building here. I truly felt like I’d been transported to the future, especially once Athena’s reasons for volunteering for this bird count were revealed. There was so much character development in those plots twists that I wished I could remain with Athena to see what she did with her life next.

While I enjoyed every story in this anthology, there were a few of them that I thought would have benefited from including more details about the worlds they were set in. “Snow Globe” was one example of this. It followed Okwi Bearheart, a park ranger who was struggling to connect with the citizens of Windigo. When a violent conflict threatened the safety of some of people who lived in that community, she had to act fast to try to help them. There was a lot going on in this plot, but the narrator didn’t give me enough details about any of it to draw me into what was happening. It would have been nice to get to know the characters better so I could have been more concerned about their fates.

“Recovering the Lost Art of Cuddling” followed Katie on a last-minute run she did to repair a neighbor’s composter before a dangerous blizzard hit their community. When the storm amped up and her journey didn’t go as anticipated, she had to figure out how to get herself and her sled dogs to safety before they froze to death. I was eager to learn if these characters would be okay. They were so endearing and well written that I couldn’t bear the thought of anything happening to any of them. Their adventures were exciting from beginning to end.

I’d especially recommend Glass and Gardens: Solarpunk Winters to anyone who wonders what the future might hold for humanity.

Despite the sign describing her as a fortune teller, Keighley doesn’t claim to have any power to predict the future. What Keighley offers her clients is peace, comfort, and hope. I loved watching her interact with the people in her small town. She manages to touch the hearts of everyone she meets. Her home and garden, though a bit neglected, sound as warm and inviting as Keighley. It is a place I would love to visit. However, Keighley’s life isn’t perfect. Caring for her grandfather is becoming more difficult, and she has practically put her life on hold. Everything changed the day Connor knocked on her door.

Connor is a good man, but he is in immense pain. His past is marred by a tragedy he has never truly moved beyond. Keighley is a soothing balm for Connor’s soul. She knows he has a painful past, and while she gently encourages him to talk about it, she doesn’t push too hard. Connor is supposed to be interviewing Keighley for a magazine article, but it soon becomes clear that their interviews are more like dates. I liked watching them get to know each other. Their first meeting is particularly entertaining! Their blossoming romance is sweet, but I must admit the passages where they gazed at and admired each other were a bit overdone, and I feel the pacing suffered as a result. Also, I couldn’t quite relax and enjoy their relationship as much as I would have liked because I knew Connor wasn’t being completely honest. While this added tension to the story, I knew the deceit would come to light eventually, and I dreaded Keighley’s reaction. I won’t spoil the story with details, but I will say that Keighley’s reaction to the truth was as expected, but also managed to be a bit surprising. Readers can be assured of a wonderful, happy ending.
