In True Believer, Nicholas Sparks asks those questions. Lexie and Jeremy are certainly different. She buys into the psychic and be;ieves that one can speak with the dead. He doesn’t believe any of it. Can these two make things work? Can they even get a relationship off of the ground?

The writing is interesting, but the story moved rather slowly. I hate to admit I lost interest a couple of times. It was just a little too easy to walk away from Lexie and Jeremy. They were okay characters, but at times I wasn’t thrilled with them. I didn’t have the connection with them I would have liked. I never really warmed to Lexie. It seemed like she had almost too much to hide. She needed to make up her mind, too. Jeremy was a little different. I liked him. I could even picture him and rooted for him. I mean, he has a plan and knows what he knows… I even kind of liked him pursuing Lexie. However, near the end, I didn’t understand his choices. The ending felt rushed and I see the story is continued in At First Sight. Maybe this would’ve been a better read had I known there was a second story. I’m not sure.

Things between Lexie and Jeremy happen rather fast. While this didn’t bother me, it might be problematic for some readers.

I do have to say this is a light read. It’s breezy and once I decided to keep going, it did flow. I had to keep reading because I wanted to see how this book would end. I liked the idea of people seeing lights in the sky and Jeremy going to Boone Creek to figure the lights out. It was an intriguing part of the storyline. I appreciated how the skepticism didn’t come off as foolishness and the total belief didn’t come off silly, either. There’s nothing wrong with believing or not and I liked that.

If you want a book that will take you away for a few hours, then this might be the book for you.

The book opens with the couple having a heated disagreement prompting Justine to leave the house in anger. Her decision to go to the grocery store is timed with the grocery store robbery. Unfortunately Justine is kidnapped. Will Dan be able to save his wife and still keep his unlawful past a secret?

From the very beginning this book had my attention. To discover early on that the kidnappers know Justine personally only made my suspense greater. The timely flash backs give a back story of Justine and Dan’s past and also adds dimension to the storyline. The author timed the flashbacks at the appropriate time and gave enough suspense to keep me entertained and still had my interest on how the story would unfold. True enough I had a feeling that Justine would be saved, but boy were there many twists that the author complied to make this a book that I enjoyed and would recommend to any reader that is looking for a good suspenseful read.

I enjoyed the writing style. How the novel flowed was perfect. The plot was told with true talent. This is a book that you can’t judge by the cover. The blurb is interesting enough but the cover lead me to think the context would be something totally different.

The bad guys were truly bad. They devised a plan and I guess with all bad intentions they thought they would actually get away with it. Dan is a man of determination. He is a strong officer with attractive features. A man that is adamant on upholding the law and has a deep concern about public safety. He was a favorable character to read about. He is a man with faults but inspire to do right. Justine is a professional woman and as with any relationship she balances work and marriage as best she can. With the turn of events of an unexpected pregnancy and the kidnapping Dan and Justine’s marriage is put to the test. This is a well written, well thought out story a reader of suspense and action wouldn’t want to miss out on.

The protagonist, Tallulah, has a path laid out for her by her magical family, living in semi-secrecy in the rural south, but she, and the non-magical community, are set to buck the trend. This storyline would be typical for a young coming of age story, apart from the fact Tallulah is much older than most looking to fight against their family values and find love where she wants it.

Her romantic interest is likeable, attractive and not the obvious choice for the area she lives in. Being new to dating and in her early twenties, their relationship is unusual for this age group. She’s new to everything, curious and excited to get to know him better. Their kisses and care for each other felt genuine. However, the insistence on cutting away from the sex scenes often left me wondering if a sex scene took place, or not. It was a little too ambiguous in some scenes. Were they making out, interrupted by the next plot point before they could get any further in love making, or did they go the whole way? I still have little clue.

The main plot takes a group of these young magical people, including the protagonist, and pits their wits against a local danger, a person who has been attacking their magical community and inciting hatred in the non-magical nearby town. Their fight back is believable for a group of young adults, but I found myself asking questions: ‘why do they not talk to their parents’ and ‘what are the parents doing about all this?’ Very often it seemed the parents were happy to provoke the nearby town and ignore the issue of who was the perpetrator, upping the stakes and tension level without much logical reasoning. I felt to be more realistic, the parents needed to show a more active fight back, logically looking into who could have caused the attacks against them as well as hitting out at anyone that doesn’t like their community. In many places, it felt like the older generation were more than happy to accept their fate, or incite it.

That said, the mystery of the attacker was fairly well-kept. I guessed who they were about half way through the story and was proved correct, which is better than some murder mysteries. I felt a few more red herrings could have been used to truly disguise the attacker, but it wasn’t badly done, and I was gripped by the storyline until the very end, staying up late to finish the book.

I enjoyed the creative magical community which was created out in the sticks, and the new approach to magical ‘gifts’, with some I’d not heard of before. This rural community was well-built and had a real charm to it. I also found the climatic final scene within this community to be satisfying and enjoyable. There was more worry and pain than joy, but it was a realistic ending to the polarised feelings of those who could use magic and those who couldn’t.

In essence, this is a dark fantasy, coming of age tale. We see and hear of bombs, rape, murder, prejudice and violence against women. It’s all shown in context, but it’s the kind of dark human behaviour which we don’t usually see in a fantasy romance. It gives the story some extra punch, but it does mean I came away from the story feeling a little darker about the human race as a whole. If shades of grey are what you enjoy in your fiction, this book is for you. I, for one, look forward to a sequel, hopefully one with slightly less prejudice.

This isn’t your typical anthology. It was fascinating to see how all of the short stories were connected to each other. I liked the fact that I got to experience the same places and people from different points of view. Sometimes my opinions of them completely changed once they popped up in a new tale and showed me a new side of their personality or history, so it was really interesting to guess who I might meet again as I kept reading.

I would have liked to see more details included in this book. There were times when I had trouble imagining what the characters were experiencing because everything was described so quickly and sparsely. This was especially true when it came to what the ghosts and other supernatural creatures looked like. While I could picture some of them quite well, many others were harder to bring to mind because I had so few clues about how they looked or what they sounded like.

Some of the plot twists were extremely well done. “All Hallows Eve” was by far my favorite example of a great surprise from these authors. The characters in were a snooty, young couple who decided to mock everything they saw at a rural Halloween carnival. When they were invited to find their way through a corn maze, I was sure I knew how their night would end. The fact that I was wrong about what happened next only made me more curious to know their fate. If you’re planning to read this collection out of order, this would be a wonderful place to start.

Ruby comes to work for Nate, who owns the house sitting company, through a mutual connection. What starts as a convenient working relationship evolves into so much more when Ruby begins to uncover the secrets of the house.

As a writer, Ruby is naturally curious and there’s plenty to discover on this assignment. First and foremost is the absentee owner who likes to play with women. And then there are the mysterious deaths.

The characters were for me what made this book special. Nate and Ruby had an instant attraction from the beginning. Though this book is more mystery than romance, I was able to watch their relationship develop and witness them learning to trust each other through the incidents and deaths that occur in the book. Through everything they learn a lot about each other.

The mystery and attraction turned romance is a perfect beach read. The mystery took some time to develop but that time was insightful towards knowing more about Nate and Ruby and their relationship. The climax was the highlight because all of the clues and bits and pieces that Ruby unraveled. It all came together for a realistic and satisfying conclusion.

I found I could only read a few chapters at a time and then needed to stop and give my poor brain a rest! I was fascinated by the tale, though, as I’m not overly knowledgeable about the time period in Ireland (like the fact that Catholics couldn’t buy land at one time, for instance). I really enjoyed the learning that went along with the plot.

There was a very slight paranormal twist involving a magical brooch, but for the most part this is just really historical fiction. I admit I struggled to get involved at first. We meet the family and not much happens for the first few chapters. Truthfully, I have a low tolerance for books that take time to find their footing, and had I not been reading this for review, I might have stopped. I’m glad I didn’t–and if you enjoy historical fiction, I suggest you continue on, too!

The author does a good job investing the reader in the characters, but I was surprised how my opinions of just who was “good” and who was “bad” changed as I turned the pages. So well done! I did struggle a little with the ending, because I really prefer a truly happy one, but this turned out the only way it could have, I think, and it wasn’t exactly unhappy either. Times were difficult then, and the author injected a certain amount of realism in her story.

All in all a satisfying historical read. If they made history in school this interesting, everyone would pass with flying colors!

Holly is forced to grow up quickly due to the broken home she lives in which finally culminates into the murder of her mother. Throughout the book Holly deals with the remorse of poor choices and the guilt that she has caused her mother’s death.

The author does an amazing job at chronicling the life of Holly and bringing her emotions to the forefront. Whereas Holly sometimes makes poor decisions and has to face the consequences, the reader is placed in a position to understand the thoughts that have caused Holly to take the actions which she has taken.

The internal struggles, disappointment and fears that Holly feels are feelings that resonate with the reader. The lack of a support system, a broken family circle and the ever consuming feelings of worthlessness and abandonment from being forced from home to home tear at the heart of the reader. Jace, the appointed School Social Worker tries to walk Holly through the grief and rebuilding processes but even Jace is forced to back down when Holly is unwilling to change her actions.

The relationship between Holly and her boyfriend Zander is one that goes beyond physical attraction. When Holly and Zander first spend time together, the reader begins to understand that Zander can see the beauty that Holly hides from the world. Holly holds back, fearing the destructive cycle of abuse that she has so often witnessed her mother being pulled into. The author is remarkable in portraying the sexual attraction and the internal struggle that Holly finds herself facing.

The author vividly reinforces the ever strong tide of emotions within Holly. The constant nightmares become more and more real, the memories that Holly struggles to repress come flooding back with a vengeance. The letters that Holly writes to her mother show her inward struggles and growing feelings of depression. These all add to the outward constant struggle that the reader is made keenly aware of through Holly’s interactions. One of the greatest quotes that I found which describe Holly’s feelings is: “it felt like I was trapped in the bad memories and couldn’t escape.”

Holly is a very likable character and for those who have gone through struggles similar to hers will find that the feelings, choices and struggles presented by the author are very real and approached in a very strong way. Several times throughout the book Holly struggles to understand her own emotions which have come to torment her.

If you want to read a story where you feel you grow as much as the characters grow and you wish to feel the raw emotions stir within you just like the author describes, I highly recommend this book! I could not put it down!

The author realistically lays out a support network for Tabitha, one that is real in every sense of the word, yet seems to crumble when put to the test.

Finding the Upside of Down will be difficult for some readers who have experienced severe bulling harassment in the past. The realistic descriptions, the painful struggle and the constant checking over the shoulder fear that victims have felt in the past come to the forefront while reading this book.

Finding the Upside of Down is just that, finding positivity in the harrowing darkness of feeling as though you have failed everyone. I believe that every reader can identify with the struggles that Tabitha has encountered. Maya Rodale creates a delightful story that encompasses family love and exasperation, social taboos, economic struggles, and romantic love that withstands the ‘slings and arrows’ of a snobbish society.
