This is just a sweet story of a love that can transform a person. It’s part of a series, but can definitely be read as a standalone (though I would like to go back and read the first book in the series. I’m assuming it’s his friend’s story).

The characters are well drawn for such a short work (less than 150 pages and, if I had had the time I could have easily read it in one sitting). My favorite character, besides Nicholas and Clare, is Tom… what a wonderful character. I would love to see him get his own story..maybe a coming of age tale?

And, what can I say about Nicholas and Clare.. I fell in love with them both. I loved how the title aptly describes not only the season, but also Nicholas himself. His heart was certainly frozen due to being hurt previously.

If you are looking for a sweet romantic tale of two people finding each other, give this one a shot. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more of this author’s works.

Lexi was a well-developed and sympathetic character. One of the things I liked the most about her was how realistically her voice was written. She acted and sounded exactly like a young teen her age should act and sound. That isn’t an easy thing to accomplish by any means! Ms. Almond put a lot of effort into this subtle but important part of writing this genre, and her hard work was appreciated by this reader.

I would have preferred to see more time spent developing the sections of the plot that talked about Lexi’s ability to transport to her own dimension. It was nothing like what I expected it to be. As fascinated as I was by the explanation for how this worked and why it wasn’t part of the science fiction genre like I originally assumed, it sure would have been nice to have more information here.

The subplot of this story about bullying was handled sensitively. Some of the best scenes in it involved how the adults in Lexi’s life reacted to hearing about the way she was mistreated by certain classmates. Their responses were as compassionate as they were realistic. I also enjoyed reading about how Lexi herself coped with all of the teasing. That’s a difficult thing for any kid to go through, and her coping mechanisms were good ones.

Unusual Confusion should be read by any preteen or teen who feels lonely or misunderstood.

The author clearly knew this genre well, and it showed.

I would have liked to see more attention paid to the world building in this story, especially when it came to the characters and their backstories. There were some fascinating things going on with the other creatures Frederick met while he was on his quest to get the magic ring out of his throat and back to wherever it was supposed to go. The connections between everyone were briefly touched upon, but there was so much going on that it sure would have been helpful if those explanations had been a bit longer and more detailed.

The magic in this universe was delightfully unpredictable. At first I wondered what the rules governing it were, but I quickly realized that it wasn’t meant to figured out ahead of time. Anything could happen each time Frederick burped, coughed, or otherwise jostled it as it was lodged in his throat. The best thing I could do was to relax and enjoy the ride, so that’s exactly what I did.

Frederick Fly-Catcher should be read by anyone who is looking for a lighthearted adventure.

I’ve not read another by Thea Harrison, so when I saw this book, it was a treat. I had to pick it up. I’m glad I did. The writing flowed well and I read this story in a matter of hours. I knew what was going on, despite this being a book in the middle of a series, and understood the characters.

It’s a quick read. There’s a lot of time spent on Dragos and his mate, Pia. I didn’t mind that, but the mystery aspect of the story seemed almost forgotten. I did like the smaller plot point that revolved around Pia, but since I hadn’t read any of the other books in the series, that sort of took away from the enjoyment—I didn’t realize how hard this plot point was for her.

Still, there’s mystery, mayhem and a few twists I didn’t see coming. Check this book out, but be sure to start at the beginning so you get the most out of each story.

London is a very well-developed character who has been raised in a strict Japanese family. Their parents do not show any emotions as they are buried under decorum, she was also raised to respect her elders and that it was her job to take care of her brother. She is a woman of a lot of virtues, strength, a large heart, determination and bravery. London has a really cool gift as it seems like all the were-jaguars have their own special gifts. Hers is being able to help those that have passed away. She is able to see their final moments and that somehow makes it easier for the person’s soul to let go of their bodies and move on.

Breeze is a character with a lot of problems from his youth that affects him every single day. The only time he feels some peace is when he is with London. His parents died when he as young and he was placed with his uncle. Unfortunately, his uncle turned out to be abusive, which had him ending up in the hospital several times. I also enjoyed the fact that he also burglarizes the rich and give to the poor, just like Robin Hood. He is a man who does not like to follow the rules but he has a large amount of loneliness. The only thing that seems to keep the loneliness somewhat at bay was having a job, although he doesn’t really consider the team friends. He also has some trust issues. He has a lot of trouble sleeping as the nightmares keep coming of all the times he was injured or emotionally abused by his uncle.

The characters were well-developed with strong personalities and tragedies in their family. Breeze had to get over his abuse and London had to deal with emotionally cold parents.  The only thing I thought could have been drawn out a bit more is the attraction between Breeze and London. It’s a pet peeve of mine when someone falls in love at first sight. Of course, there is such a thing of as soul mates and maybe that’s what they were to each other.

This is a wonderful story full of some of my favorite elements: shifters, magic, and a great romance. Try it today.

Monty was such a likeable guy. He was quirkier than most kids his age, but the hobbies and mannerisms that made him stand out from the crowd were also what made him so interesting. His unique approach to what someone should do for fun in their spare time showed off so many of the things that made him who he was as an individual.

Yes, some of Monty’s quirks lead to him being bullied because of how his classmates misunderstood him and he misunderstood them at times. I thought the scenes that showed him being mistreated by the other students at his school were realistic and well written. While this definitely isn’t true for every case of bullying, Monty did need to learn how to polish up a few of his social skills in this particular situation, and his classmates needed to learn how to be more accepting of people who march to the beat of their own drum. The author struck a nice balance between showing how both of those things can be true simultaneously while still having a lot of compassion for a kid who’s had to adjust to far too many new schools in his short lifetime.

This was one of those cases where a blurb fairly reveals the basic plot of a book while still leaving plenty of surprises for a reader to discover for themselves. I was intrigued by the little I knew when I started reading it, and I quickly realized that I enjoyed this tale twice as much as I originally thought I would. I obviously can’t go into specific details here, but I will say that this felt like something that underpromised an already attention-grabbing storyline only to over-deliver on exactly how much fun it was to read. It’s pretty marvellous when that happens!

The character development was handled beautifully. I especially appreciated seeing all of the ways in which Monty grew and changed as a person as a result of everything that happened to him during the course of this storyline. He matured so nicely while still remaining true to who he’d been all along.

Monty and the Monster is a must-read for anyone who has ever had to deal with bullying or experiments that don’t necessarily go the way they’re expected to.

I was excited to go on another adventure with Naomi, the protagonist of Sleuth on Safari. This time she’s traveling with her mother and, once again, a dead body shows up.

It was wonderful to get a detailed glimpse of Iceland and learn about some of the special foods and habits of the people. It was also great getting another small glimpse of Jack (I loved him from the last book).

The mystery was just as good as the last one – I have to admit to not knowing who the killer was until the end. Good job on that!

And, I loved Naomi’s mother…finally. She was a hard one to swallow until all was revealed. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series – hopefully we’ll be able to meet Naomi’s brother. It was also really cool that Charlotte was involved long distance.

This is shaping up to be a really neat series and I can hardly wait to see where the author takes us next.

After leaving her friend’s house, she decides she’s going to prove to her brother that “The Lady on the Road ” urban legend is just that…

The protagonist of this story is an eighteen-year-old who has heard her older brother’s story about a very creepy lady on the road for years. The story features a ghost driver’s encounter before disappearing.

Of course the star of this tale doesn’t quite take the legend seriously. She decides to go out one evening in search of entertainment. Not finding enough of it, she dares herself to go down the road of nightmares.

That seems like a stupid thing to do, but in the real world, people would most likely laugh off the lore as a stupid story, so this character will probably be all right and later have a good laugh about her adventures. She could boast of being brave. She seems like a normal young lady, and readers will find themselves curious. Will something bad happen? Will there be a surprising ending?

The mood of the story starts out as suspenseful then gets dark. The secondary characters support the storyline just right, and the setting is well done. This is a quick, entertaining read.

Normally, I’d discuss stories in a short collection like this individually. Due to fact that all eight of them were pieces of flash fiction, however, I will only be mentioning the ones that I can talk about without giving away spoilers.

A set of brilliant quadruplets were the main characters in “The Invention.” Each one of them excelled in a different specialty, and they were now ready to come together and share their knowledge after all four of them had completed their PhD studies. I really liked the enthusiasm of these characters. They were so determined to use their knowledge and intelligence to change the world. With that being said, they were written in such a way that made them seem much younger than their actual ages. They were as impulsive as young teenagers at times for reasons I never understood. It would have been helpful to have an explanation for this whether it involved them being at least a decade younger than I assumed or their behavior being a side effect of their many gifts.

As someone who deeply dislikes setting my clock forward and back for Daylight Savings Time twice a year, I was immediately drawn to the idea of this having unforeseen consequences for Helena, the protagonist of “The Weird and Wicked Daylight Savings Mystery.” She was so shocked by what really happened when she moved her clock ahead one hour that I couldn’t wait to find out why her life changed so much between evening and morning. The explanation for that was interesting, but I do wish it had been explained in more detail. It felt rushed to me, especially once Helena began to dig deeply into why her memories of her old life so contradicted her new one.

Before you read any more of this paragraph, stop and savor the humor in a title like “The Hamster Who Outsmarted the Prankster God.” It’s a splendid foreshadowing of what is to come in this tale as a prankster god named Adeben met his match in the furriest and least likely of all foes. This was by far the best part of this collection. It was funny, unpredictable, and filled with twists that made me grin.

Beyond: A Short Story Anthology of the Paranormal should be read by anyone who enjoys short and delightfully odd science fiction.
