Susan Carlisle’s books are must reads for me. When I saw she had a new series, the Modern Masters of Their Castles series, I knew I had to check it out. Granted, I came in at book 2 – it’s a bad habit of mine, starting in the middle. But that didn’t take away from the book. Not at all. The writing flowed well and the story was engaging. I liked the characters and I cared about them. I had to know what would happen next for them.

Mallory is strong-willed and determined, which was great. I liked that she wasn’t afraid to use her looks to get what she wanted, but that she also had a brain in her head. She was refreshingly honest and forthright. Evan is just as headstrong and I liked him, even though he could come off a bit abrasive at times. He knew what he wanted and what he had to do. At least he was honest with himself.

The romance portion of the story, the chemistry between the characters was off the charts, too. I loved that.

If you’re looking for a good book to warm the chilly nights, then this is one to check out. Recommended.

Mr. Dutton had a smooth, descriptive writing style that worked perfectly for the tone of this book. I stayed up past my usual bedtime for more than one night so I could finish an extra chapter and see what the characters would discover about the mysteries of ancient tower next among many other compelling scenes. The act of reading felt like watching a movie play out vividly in my imagination. That’s something that only happens occasionally for me, and I relish it every time it does.

There were times when the pacing was a bit uneven. This was something I noticed the most in the last third of this tale. It was distracting for me as a reader to move between the quicker pace of the beginning and middle to the slower pacing later on. Either of the speeds would have been fine. I simply would have preferred that the storyline stuck to one or the other.

The protagonist’s character development was excellent. I really questioned his judgement in the beginning due to his decision to investigate a case without having any training in how the authorities collect evidence or what steps they take to preserve a crime scene. Without giving away too many details, I can say that I was quite pleased with how the plot twists not only acknowledged the danger of doing these things but gave good explanations for why the main character made those choices. I walked away feeling satisfied with what I’d learned about them as well as with how much they’d changed as a result of their determination to get to the truth.

Book of the Elder Wisdom was a thought-provoking read that I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys metaphysics or archeology.

This is an interesting new novel about Morgaine Le Fay and the life decisions she made. The worst one was falling for the light Sidhe Fergus Archer, yet you have to feel sorry for her. Draco has an interesting sense of humor and I love how confused he is of everything that is the 21st century. It was a great amount of fun (with some LOL moments, like when he commented on the band, Korn) and I love how the author made their relationship change over time. Trust slowly building until lust takes over and then over protectiveness. One of the first kind things Morgaine finally receives is a good meal, a bath, and clean clothes making her finally feel like a real person. Draco doesn’t know how to deal with her emotions, though, or how they make him feel. There’s a lot of growing and changing both characters have to do.

I did think the ending was rather rushed. But I adored this plot and the twists and turns that make it an interesting read. So many different relationships and watching them change and develop is a real pleasure. So, the only things I would like to see change is the beginning take off a little faster and the ending not to be quite so quick. A great read especially for those that love the old legends of Britain.

I found this to be an interesting short story. The writing style is different to most stories I am used to – quite sparse and succinct. While I often enjoy this style for gritty or noir mystery stories – the lack of description and short, punchy style of writing really lends a tense, terse sort of atmosphere perfect for harder types of mystery or detective stories – I’m not sure this writing style is really suited for romance stories, even erotic ones. With so little detail and a snappy, very bare sort of “voice” it was quite difficult for me to get a good feel for Mary Ann and her personality. While as the reader I certainly knew the basics – she was a mother really feeling her empty nest and searching for a new path in her life – I didn’t get a good understanding of her character until quite a long way into the short story.

Readers looking for a slightly grittier and short story written very leanly should find this writing style suits their tastes. I also feel those looking for a more romantic or softer style of story might not find what they need here. Mary Ann is mostly happily married and indeed remains with her husband – her deal with Brink is quite clear and only to train her in the lifestyle of a part-time submissive. This isn’t an affair of the heart, and in many ways their relationship isn’t considered cheating to either Mary Ann or Brink. While they are physically and sexually intimate Mary Ann and Brink have a clear contract outlining their sessions and what is and isn’t acceptable and what they each wish to achieve with the other.

There are also a few scenes between Brink and his main submissive, Mimi. I feel only readers who enjoy harder edged – more erotic rather than romantic – stories will enjoy the scenes of Mimi pushing her relationship boundaries with Brink and the resulting punishment. I found the harder edge of these scenes coupled with the lean writing style really made this story more a piece of short erotica and not really romantic or sensual. It was hard for me to feel the emotional ties and feelings connecting the main characters to each other and so I feel this story won’t be to everyone’s tastes.

Those looking for something edgier or different from the usual short story should certainly give this a try. While I don’t feel it will be suitable for all readers it was a good, fresh and different read.

When my son graduated high school, it was very bittersweet. That’s exactly how I feel right now. I absolutely loved this series. I read every book and I’m so sad that the series is over now. The Forgiven Scoundrel was the perfect ending to the Tricking the Scoundrels series.

The heroine, Belle, was a complex character that was pivotal in all the other books. I was really looking forward to reading her story because I always found her intriguing because of the mysterious aura surrounding her. I didn’t think I’d love Belle any more than I did but I was wrong. Her romance with the hero, Lord Phillip Delamont, was sublime.

Many secrets make for a really awesome plot. Relatable characters that I’ve befriended in previous books only enhance my positive feelings while reading this story. Combine a spicy romance between Belle and Phillip and I have a book glow.

In addition to the excellent writing style, unpredictable plot twists and consistent quality pace flow, I found The Forgiven Scoundrel to be an entertaining read that I didn’t want to put down.

I definitely recommend this book to be on a reader’s “must read” list for those who love stories with redemption, forgiveness and true love. All the books in this series can be read as standalones, but I suggest reading the entire series. With Christmas coming, the complete set of Tricking the Scoundrels series would make a wonderful gift.

Alia was an intelligent and observant woman. I smiled at how quickly she noticed something was off about her new neighbor, Vikrant. Trisha was such a likeable main character. I empathized with her as she struggled to find a job after graduation and watched her friends fall in love and get married while she felt like she was falling further and further behind in life. Her sadness and frustration over these things were understandable, and they made me hope that something wonderful would happen to her soon. She was a sweet and kind young woman who deserved her own happy ending.

I found the time jumps confusing. Some chapters were about Trisha’s life five years ago while others were about things that happened to her more recently or even during the present. As much as I liked getting to know her during various stages of her life as a new adult, it would have been nice to see her fate unfold chronologically instead of what appeared to be reverse chronological order for the most part. I often mixed up what happened to her and when because of how often the scenes moved among various important moments of her life.

The chemistry between Trisha and her love interest was well written. Their relationship wasn’t perfect, but it was built on mutual respect. I enjoyed seeing them dance around the question of whether they should get married to each other and looked forward to finding out what their answers to it would be. They both had good reasons to say yes, although there were definitely realistic obstacles in their paths as well.

This is the prequel to “Life’s Not Over Yet.” It can be read as a standalone story.

Love Will Find You was a hopeful read that I’d recommend to anyone who has ever wished they could be the next person in their social circle to get married or reach some other milestone in life.

The author does well with descriptive settings, allowing readers to become immersed in places. Adding views of present day Paris with sprinkles of history does much for the setting and mood. Victoria is a good detective, searching for and following clues. There are wonderful discoveries and twists and turns in this story, and subjects with depth. A touch of religion and spiritualism underlies the tale. It also takes a lovely romantic turn.

The book becomes increasingly more emotional and touching because Victoria is a romantic yet sensible woman who knows what she wants. To top things off, the ending was quite satisfying.

One of best parts of this tale had to do with how all of the characters treated one another. While there were times when they disagreed on certain topics, everyone was always kind and respectful to those around them. This is something that I enjoy finding to matter which genre I read. It’s heartwarming to see characters treat each other well. Honestly, these are personality traits that matter more to me than just about anything else an author could think to write about their characters.

This story included many details that slowed down the pacing of the plot. This wordiness could be found in the dialogue, setting, and descriptions of what the characters were thinking while others spoke to them. As intrigued as I was by the storyline itself, there were times when it was hard to stay focused on what I was reading because of how often the plot was interrupted by these things.

Dev and Trisha had great chemistry, especially given the unconventional way they met. I appreciated the fact that they had appropriate amounts of wariness about each other and took plenty to time to get to know one another before anything even remotely romantic happened between them. That was a sensible way to write those scenes, and it gave me plenty of time to start anticipating the thought of them possibly falling in love.

Anyone who likes slow-burning romances should take note of Life’s Not Over Yet.

‘Unsaid’ is a collection of heartfelt poetry and prose attempting to make sense of these broken pieces. It invites you to explore the subtleties of love, companionship, and self-discovery. In today’s world of never-ending chaos, the book presents a refreshing opportunity for us to pause and reflect. It is written in a way that allows us to pick up any random page on a given day, reflect upon a thought, make it our own, and then move on to the next one.

Just by listening to our hearts, we can finally let the unsaid be said.

Almost everyone has thoughts they never share with anyone.

I appreciated the way all of the poems and essays in this collection were loosely connected to each other. They certainly stood as independent works, too, but there was something special about reading all of them and looking for their similarities. Together they created a complex and thought-provoking portrait of some of the most private parts of the author’s mind. I’d never met her before, and yet I finished this with the feeling that I’d somehow made a new friend because of how much of herself Ms. Rajiv freely shared with her audience.

With that being said, there were times when the subject matter jumped around a little too much for my tastes. I’ll discuss the two main topics in a moment, but there were many other subjects the author included in her work. Some of them were mentioned once or twice while others came up over and over again. It would have been helpful for this reader to have the entries that talked about the same or similar subjects to be grouped together so that I could better know what to expect next.

Building self worth and self esteem were among the most common themes of this book. The author had clearly spent a lot of time figuring out why she struggled with these things and trying all sorts of techniques to improve her opinion of herself and her abilities. This is a topic that isn’t given enough attention, especially in poetry. It was delightful to spend so much time reading about what did and didn’t work for her as well as seeing how she took pieces of her journey and created lovely poems about them. Here is just one of the beautiful tidbits I was lucky enough to read: “The more we accept each fallen piece, the less broken we are.”

If you love self-reflective poetry, Unsaid might be right up your alley. I know I certainly enjoyed it!
