The scene-setting and world-building in this book are amazing. Like I’ve said, you go from the historical setting of 1900 to modern day 2019. You also go from Earth to the Demon Realms in the blink of an eye. All scenes are perfectly described and easy to see. The pacing is smooth. I did have some confusion when Elizabeth and Caym first split up but soon overcame that.

I think the only thing for me is I wish I had had more time with Caym and Elizabeth as a couple. You get a couple of scenes in 1900 and that’s about it apart from one, maybe two, in 2019. As this is quite a long book, I would have preferred more but that’s just me.

All in all, this was an angel/demon book that I enjoyed and have no hesitation in recommending.

I really enjoyed figuring out how they were connected to each other and making guesses about which characters from the first section might show up again in the second one.

Add to that, that this is set in futuristic Earth with beings from another planet/dimension/time zone and maybe you can understand my confusion.

The relationship between Lenore and Jon was mostly physical. I didn’t really feel any other connection between them. The relationships between the others of the Octad were jumbled as I hadn’t had time to get to know them so I had no idea about their capabilities etc.

I found some things in the book to be way too easy and others to be unnecessarily hard. That being said, once I got my head wrapped around the fact it was a futuristic romance, then I began to enjoy the story more. There were no big surprises but an easy flowing story that eventually held my attention.

It’s not an easy story, but it’s a good one and recommended.

Their society is run by having human tenders, who are trained extensively to handle the needs of all vampires including feeding and sex. I really enjoyed her character because she is feisty and no-nonsense. She doesn’t let the vampires scare her and lets her opinions be known, even if they don’t want to hear it. The fun thing is watching her grow to become a member of their family. They become protective when they have to take her on a rescue mission for one of their own. Her courage is impressive.

Nichol seems to hate females. He is also known as the most irritable. He does have a huge burden to carry. His gift is empathy, and he feels everything his brethren do and can even drain some of it into himself. Audra is fascinated by him and his gift. Later, as their relationship develops she can tell which one of his brothers he is helping by his eyes.

The ending was a little rushed, but that may be because the third book picks up directly from the second. In this book, the reader is left hanging, with a big decision Audra needs to make.

All in all this is a good book after I got through the first part and figured out which character is which. I would recommend this to anyone who loves vampires.

The action sequences were nicely written and balanced out the science fiction themes well. Some of my favorite sections were the ones that described characters I wouldn’t necessarily expect to meet in this sort of setting. Obviously, I have to be careful about what I share here to avoid spoilers, but I liked the way the author played around with the audience’s expectations of who might find themselves tangled up in this sort of adventure. Taking note of my own assumptions about who I’d meet and comparing them to who actually showed up made me chuckle. They also made me wonder what the author is going to do with their characters going forward in this series since they’ve already shown a willingness to include many different types of heroes.

This book isn’t what I’d normally pick for my reading. I like a distinctive line with the romance. The injected spirituality and religion is good, but not my cuppa. I also had a bit of an issue with this being listed as inspirational when there is discussion of romantic relations. I won’t give away spoilers, but this isn’t a sweet book. It’s more of a sensual story and might not be for some readers wanting purely sweet romance.

If you’re looking for a book that makes you think and look at the life, mostly your choices, a little differently, then this might be the book for you. Check it out.

Keep the previous paragraph in mind as you read this one. It was impossible for me to pick favorites in this anthology, but “What Eyes Can See” was definitely a unique one. Gail, the main character in it, was annoyed by the fact that she was getting a new solar panel installed on her roof she’d neither ordered nor wanted. That’s about the last thing I’d expect to read about in the context of a fascist government, so I was eager to read more. While I can’t go into more detail about this unwelcome change in her life without giving away the ending, I can say it was well written and gave me plenty of food for thought.

The title of “That Time I Got Demon Doxxed While Smuggling Contraband to the Red States” reveals much of what readers should know about its plot ahead of time. It was set in the somewhat near future and was about a smuggler who ended up with more than they bargained for right as they were about to smuggle more goods to the blue states in what used to be the United States. The narrator explained some of the unique things about their world, but many others were left for us to slowly piece together on our own. It was a great deal of fun for me to figure out what they meant when they used certain terms that weren’t immediately defined.

Recognize Fascism was a wild ride that I can’t recommend highly enough to anyone who has wondered how they’d react in a crisis.

I can’t say or who what this might have been in my review for spoiler reasons, but it was introduced in such a way that I didn’t know if it was referring to a person, place, thing, idea, or something else entirely. While I did eventually figure it out, it sure would have been nice to have a clear understanding of what Nick meant when he used that term from the very beginning.

The ending was spectacular. Not only did it give me a strong sense of closure, it gave Nick even more opportunity to grow as a person. That’s not an easy thing to accomplish in less than twenty pages! Seeing how the author pulled it off so smoothly made me curious to read more from him soon. I was both eager to find out what might happen to Nick next and satisfied by where his story ended.

Imago et Umbra should be read by anyone who has ever wished they could return to a specific point in their past.

Jon’s fantasy world is about to become very real.

Jon’s life hasn’t exactly been easy. After his abduction and subsequent rescue, years of therapy and his mother’s constant desire to move from place to place have taken their toll on Jon. He hopes that college will be a chance to have some semblance of normalcy. Unfortunately, danger is and has always been much closer than Jon realizes.

I felt so sorry for Jon. His entire world is turned upside down the moment his guardian, the Translucent, comes crashing back into his life. She does have another name, but I don’t want to spoil the story by revealing how she gets it. Before Jon knows it, he and his friend Miles are running for their lives forced to depend on a woman he knows nothing about other than she saved him as a child. Jon soon learns that an entire race of magical beings lives on Earth hidden from humans. Jon’s roller coaster of emotions and mini breakdown are completely understandable. In fact, I think his reaction to the magic world is one of the most realistic I’ve read. Often when I’ve read stories in this genre, the characters acclimate to the information a bit too quickly for my taste. That is certainly not the case with Jon. He needs time to absorb everything. With the help of his friend Miles and the Translucent, I have a feeling he’ll be fine.

I found Jon’s relationship with the Translucent strange. Since she saved him, he developed a crush on her. His art notebooks are filled with images of her face. He’s imagined her as a perfect guardian angel for years. The reality is quite different, and it was a little sad to see Jon’s perception of her crumble. I must admit I did not like the Translucent at first. She is very abrupt and seems rather indifferent to the emotional upheaval Jon experiences. She barely speaks to Jon and Miles, and when she does, she only says the bare minimum. While I understand that the Translucent is old and not used to interacting with humans so much, it was still painful to watch.

Fortunately, Miles is there to keep things from being completely unbearable. He’s an extremely entertaining character with a good sense of humor. While Miles understands the gravity of their situation, he always seems to find a way to lighten the mood and rarely fails at making Jon smile. I must also add the Miles has some secrets of his own. At first, I was worried that Jon would see this as a betrayal, but his friendship with Miles is strong and weathers this revelation. Before long, the Translucent begins to warm to Jon and Miles and the unlikely trio turn into quite the team.

I enjoyed reading Finding Soul. The pacing was great, and I had fun watching Jon, Miles, and the Translucent bond. The Darovit are intriguing, and I look forward to learning more in the next installment of this series!
