This is the second book in the series, but I didn’t have any trouble figuring out what was going on. I’m sure my experience would have been richer and I would have understood all the nuances of the relationships better had I read the first book, but I still enjoyed it very much. I have already downloaded the first book in the series, though, because I want to read them both (heads up– the first book is free on Amazon).

I absolutely loved this book. It’s quirky humor reminded me of one of my favorite books, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe. Edger Lives shares a lot in common — zany, fun characters, adventures in saving the universe, and a bit of a love interest. Parts of this book were so laugh out loud funny, I found myself interrupting my husband’s reading to share segments of the book.

Great job, Mr. Beem. I’m definitely hoping there will be more books featuring these characters. You have won a new fan!

This is a novella, so there’s not a heap of room for character development, yet Ms. Dean manages to draw very clear pictures of both characters. I found myself laughing out loud with some of their exchanges. It was heartwarming to see Maxim as he begins to remember things about Alexandra, and it was very cool to see Alexandra’s response to some of Maxim’s concerns (trying to give spoilers here).

This is a great way to spend an hour or two! I’m looking forward to the rest of the books in the series.

Ai (whose name in Japanese translates to Love) is Lily’s online friend – one she gets to know in a unique way. The Fourth Law shows the growth of that relationship, interspersed with some flashbacks into her life before the US collapse and some glimpses of what went on with her father during the time they were separated.  Parts of this segment made me think of the old TV show Revolution – the violence that apparently went on setting up the Republic of Texas.

I love Ai and her take on the world.  Her attitude reminds me of some of the anime characters my daughter used to watch… very upbeat and fun. Lily, as a contrast, is very serious – she’s the daughter of a man most people hate, she’s a student nurse, and she helps out at the orphanage she lives in.  She’s a complex character with a lot on her shoulder.  But the pair work together well….there are some great moments as they learn about each other’s worlds.

Barring a few minor editorial issues, I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to getting the next book n the series.  Thanks, Mr. Barnett, for a great introduction into the Machine Civilization.

This book starts off with a great deal of promise – in 1986, Lola is apparently communicating telepathically with her unborn child. Unfortunately, that thread drops by the wayside for the next several years. In 1993, we’re introduced to Somadina, a 5 year old who loses her mother in childbirth – and who swears to take care of her younger sister.

The story jumps back and forth between the two women and their lives over several years. It is obvious that a great deal of research has gone into the history of Nairobi. Unfortunately, there were times when it felt too much like info-dump and, to me, did not add that much to the story itself. In fact the sections of non-fiction, I found myself skimming to get back to the fictional plot. Another issue was the POV switched so often between the characters (often only lasting a couple of pages) that it was hard connecting with them.

On the other hand, the storyline itself – the danger that Somadina feels her sister is in and her telepathic search for someone to help her find her sister– is intriguing. Telepathy is one of the things I really enjoy reading about, and I found it interesting how both Somadina and Lola closed themselves off from it early – only to have the interest reigniting about the same time. I also enjoyed the parallel situations they find themselves in.

The last half of the book was definitely worth making it through the first half. It was exciting to see how the telepaths worked together to defuse the situation. I really enjoyed it. I would be interested in reading more books involving the One.

A PAIR OF HEARTS . . .

Determined to lead separate lives yet bound together by danger and their growing desire, Frank and Cat will leave their mark in the new state of Colorado.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It’s the second in the series and it’s obvious the main couple had had issues in the first book they were having to work out in this book. It’s technically a standalone, but I think my enjoyment of it would have been enhanced had I read the first book in the series as well.

I really like the main character, Cat Perdue. She is my kind of character. She’s feisty, independent, but has a tender heart that’s easily bruised, so she puts up this really tough exterior. She has some wonderful qualities—she’s probably my favorite character in the book. She does the most growing, and it’s really interesting to watch her come into her own person.

Frank has been away and comes back to find things changed in his hometown. The dance hall/saloon is gone, and in its place is a fine dining establishment – run by none other than the former entertainer for the dance hall. He hurt her badly at some time in the past, but has never been able to stop thinking about her and wishing he could make amends. And, therein lies the rub.

This couple has to overcome the past and deal with issues in the present. They are drawn to each other, but it’s hard for each of them to be completely honest with each other. The story is told from both POVs, and I find myself wanting to shake them both (Frank more than Cat to be honest) and make them tell each other what they are thinking. Frank, especially, would have come a long way if he had just told he how much he regretted what had happened. Of course, then we wouldn’t have had a book.

I did enjoy the book a lot- I love the extended family and all the family dynamics. Frank and his brother are sometimes too over-the-top protective of their female relations, but that’s part of the Code of the West and, I feel, very accurate for the time.

The writing is excellent, and I really felt I was there. I hurt along with Cat when she hurt. Kudos to the author, because I was really engrossed in the story… so much I stayed up way to late reading it! I would happily read more from this author. And, now I have to go read the first book!

The chemistry between Dina and Adam is off the wall, and I loved Dina’s character! She is socially awkward, prefers books to most people, is a treasure trove of trivia that she spouts off whenever she gets nervous, and is a librarian. What’s not to like? Adam I had a little more trouble connecting with. He is a wealthy lawyer who is having trouble at work and seems, at first, to be a spoiled brat. I wanted to take him and shake him sometimes, especially near the end of the book.

The secondary characters, as well, were well-drawn– especially with Dina’s friends, they seemed like people I would like to hang out with. I also liked the way that Ms. Wilck brought in some Jewish traditions and experiences. Even though I am somewhat familiar with Judaism, I still learned some thing I didn’t know.

This is my first book by Ms. Wilck, but I don’t think it will be my last – I was very impressed with her writing style.

Let me say up first that I love the characters in this book! Ms. Hutton has done a wonderful job creating three-dimensional characters who are flawed, yet looking for the right path to take.  The main characters, Nora and Davey, have a chemistry that I love and, once they get together (hey, this is a romance so that’s not a spoiler), their times together are scorching.

But true love doesn’t run smooth and this is never truer than in a romance novel.  Nora has a lot of demons from her past that she finds hard to get past, despite advice from everyone to “live in the now.” And, she is a strident vegan which puts throws a spanner in the romantic works due to the fact that one of Davey’s sponsors is a huge hunting outfitter.  At times, the vegan/vegetarian message gets a little too preachy – I enjoyed it better when she and Ben led by example. But, this was a very small quibble with an otherwise really neat story.

A couple of my favorite parts were Nora’s gift with animals as well the well-timed appearances of her Pap- the only man who was ever constant in her life.  Pap came close to being my favorite character of all!

The writing was very good and I stayed up way too late to finish the book.  Good job, Ms. Hutton. I’ll definitely be looking for more books by this author in the future.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author, but I guarantee it will not be the last. This is the third book in this series, but can definitely be read as a standalone. Although it was obvious the characters had a relationship, it did not detract from my enjoyment of the book. I have already bought the first two books in the series.

The characters are wonderfully drawn – even the secondary characters. They seem to be real people with their own issues – not perfect, but doing what they need to do. The book is set in a small college town, and I can easily picture everything.

I love cozy mysteries, and this one does not disappoint. Perhaps there were slower moments where I was able to put the book down for a bit, but I was always eager to return and read more. Agatha Christie is one of my very favorite authors, and it was a treat not only reading about how Em teaches about her, but also sees clues in the book she’s teaching to help her solve this crime.

I highly recommend this book…. Well done, Ms. Angela, and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

Lauren Clarks takes you on a whirlwind ride through the streets of New Orleans as Olivia tries to figure out what is going on in her life.   Ms. Clark did an amazing job capturing the confusion and angst of a teenager who has lost her way and who is trying to find out exactly who she is and where she stands. I really liked Olivia and cannot imagine what I would have done in her situation.

There were a few minor typos and a couple of times where Olivia referring to her dad by his first name that took me out of the story briefly, but I was able to get right back into the story.  Also, there were a few loose ends I would have liked to see cleared up, but these were minor issues (and probably only bothered me because I’m an editor in my day job!)

The characters are all well drawn and the mystery remained a puzzle up to the end. Good job, Ms. Clark! You had me wondering what was going to happen next all the way through the book and that’s not an easy feat to pull off. 4 stars.
