There is non-stop action with Jacob being somewhat of an anti-hero as he takes care of business when his sister is in danger. As I was reading it, I could so see this being an action-thriller on the big screen. There are many characters, but the author does a wonderful job at keeping them all separate and unique.

Because this book is completely steeped in the darkness of organized crime, it is dark, gritty, violent, and bloody, but there is also an element of family loyalty and love present. I found myself rooting for Jacob even as he was taking out his enemies, and I’m not normally a bloodthirsty type!

The book is well plotted and well written… I hated to put it down and stayed up way too late to read this. And, I have to say the ending caught me off guard…..good job, sir. Very well played. This is my first book by Jonathan Dunne but it certainly will not be my last one.

I’m a sucker for ensemble pieces and these characters all pull their weight in this story. I loved Aster…even if I could have shaken her sometimes for her stubbornness. But, it’s that same stubbornness that got her where she was, so there is that. Every member of the team was important, though, and the story would not have been the same without any of them (although I do have to admit to harboring a soft place for Jeremy and Louis). The government officials.. well, let’s just say their actions did not surprise me. ’nuff said about that.

I’m not going to say anything about the ending except to say it was satisfying to this reader. I could so see this as a movie and would definitely go to see it. Good job, Mr. Sells!

I loved the premise of this book and with the setting being Ireland, I was hooked from the first time I read the blurb. I was looking forward to seeing how the author had her heroine overcome all the difficulties she was facing in her life.

I liked the character of Isobel and, mostly, Will as well. I enjoyed their banter as they got to know each other. And, I loved the way he cared for her regardless of what was going on and how determined he was to make their relationship work.

The first half of the story was really good, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

The second half of the story took a different twist. Instead of the character development I was seeing on both Will and Isobel’s part, it seemed to read more like a magazine serial. Poor Isabel faced problems on every side (shades of Perils of Pauline). However, she was saved in the nick of time by forces she didn’t bring about – a rich opportunity was missed here, I think. I didn’t mind the roadblocks that were thrown up, but I wish Isabel had done more to save herself. I was disappointed in some of the decisions she made (just another sign of being invested  in a character).

There was also a lot of hot sex thrown in the last part of the book that, imho, was gratuitous and didn’t do anything to move the character development along. I found myself skipping these passages because they weren’t really adding anything to the story and I wanted to get back to it.

However, I was invested enough in the characters from the first half of the book to overlook these issues and move on to find out what happened next in Will and Isobel’s relationship. The writing is clean with no major issues as far as editing goes and it was an easy read.  It was definitely worth reading.

The story is told from Volke’s point of view, and it was interesting to see just how badly he wanted to get out of the situation he was in and what he would do to reach his goal. I’m left wondering if the other books in the series, the other kids we get to know will get their own chance to shine.

We follow Volke, three other teens from his island home, as well as two other kids who join the same guild as apprentices after having been bonded to magical creatures – a wide variety of eldrin are described quite well – not only those of the apprentices but also the masters. Each character, human and mythical, have their own unique personality – great job on that!

The story grabbed me at the first page and kept me enthralled as I followed Volke on his quest, through heartbreak as his first plan didn’t pan out, then the excitement of discovering Plan B. There was plenty of action, but more than that, there was a great deal of character development. I am a sucker for character-driven fiction and, with Ms. Stovall’s first book in her new series, you have that in spades. I loved the characters in this book and am really looking forward to following them on their missions as part of the Frith Guild.

The basic story is told in two parts– one point of view is Edmond’s, while he searches for Alexandra. And on the other hand, we have Vigil who is overlooking the action and recording it. The book is told on many levels and in many times, with these times sometimes colliding with each other. There are symbols and images I felt I was just on the edge of grasping, and that did occasionally frustrate me. However I feel as if it was my issue more than the book’s.

I’m looking forward to delving back into this book and try to fully understand all the nuances. Kudos!

The story starts off with a bang and doesn’t slow down. I also really enjoyed the supporting cast and could well see this on the big screen. What an exciting thrill-ride that would be!

Although the book kept me on the edge of my seat, there were also some humorous moments – mostly in the dialogue between Bel and.. well, everyone… and the way Eli learns about life in Cold City. I don’t want to say more about that because of the fear of spoilers, but Eli and his sister are among some of my favorite characters.

I have bought book one and am anxiously looking forward to the next book in the series. Kudo, Ms. Comby!

They also work together well as a team, and I’m a sucker for ensemble pieces whether in print or film.

Derrick is dark, gritty, and intense with graphic scenes, explicit language, and violent sexual situations, so if you are squeamish, you might want to beware. But, it is also full of action and twists that kept me up reading late way too many nights because I wanted to know what happened next. And, I was not disappointed – the author definitely kept me on my toes with everything going on.

I got so caught up in these characters’ lives, loves, and heartbreaks. Raymond Smollet reminded me of blind Homer telling of the Fall of Troy- only here, blind Raymond is telling of the rise and fall of the house of Weatherlee– and the people associated with it. I loved the insights into the inner workings of obsession, not only on the part of Mrs. Weatherlee, but also on the people she comes in contact with, and how this obsession affects everyone it touches.

Good job and kudos to the authors. I look forward to reading more of their work (and would love to see the play the book was based on!)

Twists of Time deals with two stories in one. On the one side, we have Alex who is working on the one hand to protect his school and family and, on the other hand is trying to help an old school friend solve a mystery and help find the pieces to a puzzle. There are also different POVs and many twists (loved the play on words the author used there) to help tell a story that actually began centuries ago with a secret passed on generations and a mother who splits her family to save that secret.

As I mentioned, there are many POVs in this story and you aren’t sure who the “bad guys” might be. The mystery is well written and kept me on the edge of my seat. The secondary storyline also adds an element of tension to the story that is not only timely but thought provoking. It was also good to catch up with characters from the other book; however, it is definitely not necessary to have read the previous book in the series. This one stands on its own wonderfully. I’m interested in reading the rest of the series.

I thoroughly enjoyed the look ahead and the what-might-have-happened with Willoughby and Marianne – a much happier-ever-after ending that Austen herself had written for them. But– I think she would have approved. Good job, Ms. Green.
