In the eleventh century, Cnute, the Viking king of England and Scandinavia, sails with his son Harald, and his shield brothers to Rome.

Harald, Selia, and their companions fail to rendezvous with King Cnute and are forced to travel cross country on horseback. If Duke Robert’s plan to assassinate Cnute succeeds, an invasion of England will follow. Can Harald and Selia reach Rome in time to warn the king?

I really enjoyed this look into a part of history I’m not very familiar with. I think, though, that after reading this story, I’ll be searching for more to read – and I will especially be looking for the rest of the books of this series.

I loved the characters – not only the primaries, but also the secondaries…the men who rode with Harald, and would like to know more about them. I’m hoping they will also be included in the rest of the books.

Harald grew up in a lot of ways on this journey he takes. He goes from a wayward boy whose father is sure needs help just to get back to the ship without getting into trouble, to a man worthy of being a king’s son.

And Selia….I loved her from the first. She’s not perfect, but she is the perfect foil for Harald. She also grows into the woman she needs to be to face the future.

There’s nonstop adventure and some moments I really wasn’t sure things were going to work out…it was certainly page turning! I give this a highly deserved five stars!

Bulb is an intriguing book- often surrealistic, often off-putting, always interesting. The concept of no privacy and people being able to look back on their own life (or yours) is scary– but altogether believable, which is even scarier. It did take me a bit to get into it (the first few chapters were confusing) but once I got further into the book, I really enjoyed it.

There are very interesting premises here, and the descriptions of the future are intriguing. The author has a gift for language I quite appreciate. There was some disjointedness in the actions, which lends itself to the surrealistic qualities. Definitely a book I want to go back and revisit.

I’m intrigued by the Faux Life Movement, where people rebel against the society as it is and have the ability to stay “off grid” in a way by finding a way to conceal their real identity and take on fake identities. It reminds me a bit of the book people in Farenheit 451 who have their own way of rebelling against the banning of books.

This is not a book one can skim through, but I think it is definitely worth the time to read it. If you aren’t put off by a book that goes off in tangents and isn’t strictly linear, give this book a try. Beware, it’s not a book to read and watch television at the same time… it’s a book that demands your full attention…but it’s so worth it in the end. Thanks, Mr. Wind. I’ll be looking out for more of your work.

A deeply committed young man falls in love with the beautiful but troubled Acadia, who knows herself too selfish, too sinful, and too skeptical in her faith to marry a preacher.

Acadia Powers nearly lost her faith at an early age due to what she saw as the hypocrisy of her parents’ generation. In college—where the novel begins—she meets and falls in love with Peter O’Neil, who is fervent in his faith and wants to share the good news with the world. Despite serious doubts about her ability to survive as a preacher’s wife, Acadia finally agrees to marry Peter. The two embark with high hopes on a new life in Sugar Sands, Alabama, where Acadia takes a position as a high school teacher while Peter becomes pastor of a small church. SONG OF SUGAR SANDS recounts Acadia’s struggle to come to terms with issues of faith, while also telling the story of Peter and Acadia’s falling in love and the traumatic first year of their marriage. When one of her students attempts suicide after confiding her problems in Acadia, and a new friend and mentor, Beatrice Wood, reveals that she has terminal cancer, Acadia almost quits. Can she reach deep enough inside, or beyond herself, to find what she needs to keep on trying, or has she made too many mistakes already?

This is a very sweet look into the life of a young married couple… Peter and Acadia. In addition to all the other issues that all young marrieds face, Acadia has added issues from her past that she has not only not dealt with, but that she’s never shared with her husband. It was a quick read that I didn’t want to put down – I was that invested in their lives.

This is a Christian novel and so, of course deals with spiritual matters, but it does so in a way that didn’t, in this reviewer’s eye, come across as “preachy.” Both of the main characters are likable, although they also both have some growing up to do.  They have to learn to pay more attention to what their partner is going through, which I find to be so very realistic.

The secondary characters, as well, are fully developed…even the characters that I had issues with showed that they are not all bad.  Good job.

This is the first book that I’ve read by this author, and I’m looking forward to reading more.

Determined to dissolve her marriage to remain with Shane, has her decision ensured his demise?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as well as the main characters. They are both strong characters and therein lies their strength as a couple.

The conflicts these two face are mostly external, and it was interesting to see how they work together to fight against those powers that would keep them apart.

Maura has agreed to a marriage to save her father from financial ruin. Unbeknown to her, her father has contrived an escape for her at the hands of Shane Christian, the notorious pirate Falcon. Unfortunately, things were messed up, and he arrived after the wedding.

Not to be detered, he still keeps his end of the bargain and heads out with her, and Maura and Shane begin a journey that will lead to freedom… or will it?

The book is filled with twists and turns. Just when you think everything is fine, another spanner gets thrown in the works. I was on the edge of my seat until the very end of the story- not knowing how things were going to work out. I am very happy I got a chance to meet these characters.

Morgan D’Arcy is an English lord, a classical pianist, and a vampire. He has everything except what he desires most—Isabeau. As the Angel Gabriel he’s steered her life and career choice, preparing her to become Lady D’Arcy.

Will he outsmart his enemies, protect his beloved and escape death himself? For the first time in eternity, the clock is ticking.

This is a dark intense entry to the vampire genre with a dark and intense hero. And, honestly, I’m still not sure what I feel about Morgan, but I do know I want to read the next book in the series. And, not knowing what I feel about the hero is not a bad thing. Strong feelings toward a character, to me, is a mark of the author’s skill.

What I don’t like about him… it made me uneasy how long he manipulated Isabeau…grooming her for his own use. To me, that was just creepy.

On the other hand, he is completely devoted to her (although, in the beginning, even that, too, smacked of an unhealthy obsession and an unhealthy relationship).

Both Isabeau and Morgan are strong characters and, once she discovered the entire truth about him and was able to meet him as an equal, was, to me, the best part of the book. I loved them together at that point. The author has done a wonderful job at making the characters (even the secondary characters) come alive.

The plot was riveting– in addition to the main romantic plot, there are secondary plots flowing through that have to do with Morgan’s past (there are some prequels to this novel, which I am eager to read, that I believe will shed a lot of light on Morgan and his thinking). There were twists and turns that I definitely didn’t see coming but that added to the richness of the book.

One warning– this book does not end with a traditional HEA. As a part of a series, it definitely leaves the ending open. And, I cannot wait to read the next book in this series. Well done, Ms. Nightingale!

The struggle to protect what is his by birthright becomes a battle that must be fought in the past, the present and the future and in other parts of the world. I love time travel stories and, to a lesser extent, alternative history and I was intrigued by the plot and concept of this book as I’m a huge fan of the time period. I did have a little trouble getting into this book. I understand there’s a previous book in the series, and I might have had less trouble if I had read that one first.

There were some inconsistencies that threw me out of the book on occasion, but I think that was more me being an editor in a previous life. I soon was able to get back into the swing of the story, though they did mar my enjoyment a bit.

I enjoyed the characters immensely and was intrigued by the whole concept of Scotland as a free nation. The ending was not what I expected at all. Ms. Orford has a different take on time travel than I’m used to, and I am planning on reading the first book to see if I can pick up more of the background of the story.

Is Juno the source of danger in the village, or a victim of it? Benjamin must resist her beguiling ways and decide if he can trust her…until another death sets his smoldering worries ablaze.

This is my first introduction to Ms. Byrd’s work, but it will definitely not be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which was more mystery than romance (though there was definitely an element of romance…it was not, to me, the forefront of the book).

The cast of characters was relatively small – the village is there in the backdrop, but the main cast of characters can be distilled to two couples and two mothers. And, I would love to read more about all of them. I can see Ben and Juno getting mixed up with other mysteries. I would really like to revisit them.

The mystery was first rate – I was definitely surprised with the twists and turns. The characters were likable, and I found myself cheering them on (as well as shaking my head in disbelief at how slow on the uptake Ben was at times).

All in all, a pleasant way to spend a few hours.

This book was an easy read and was also an interesting look at the history of New South Wales. I loved the characters – it reminded me a bit of watching an old TV show. I could see the action taking place in my mind’s eye.

I absolutely loved Jo (well, there were times near the end of the book I wanted to shake her…but I don’t want to give away any plot points, but I was disappointed in her then). She knew what she wanted, and she wasn’t shy about going after it. She had spunk.

I did get aggravated the way Tim kep calling her a wench. It seemed rude, but for the time and area it might not have been. I knew he didn’t mean anything by it.. after all, they had been friends for years, but I grated on my nerves just a big. But, that’s just me and probably wouldn’t bother anyone else.

I enjoyed this book so much, I want to now go back and read the two earlier books in the series. Good job, Ms. McGill!

Sixteen-year-old Anna sees things from another world, the spiritual world, a skill that isn’t exactly useful in high school. It’s bad enough that her mother, possessed by a demon, took her own life when Anna was a child, a loss she remains tortured by. Now her father makes his living “clearing” haunted objects, and Anna’s job as his assistant makes her a social misfit. Most kids in her suburban New Jersey town refer to her just as “Goblin Girl.”

Only Freddy and Dor remain loyal friends. But Anna’s so focused on her own problems, she’s missed that her connection with Freddy is moving beyond the friend zone.

When Anna realizes she can harness this evil power, she sets out to save Bloomtown and the only family she has left.

But to do so, she must keep her own increasingly dark urges at bay.

I thoroughly enjoyed this dark supernatural YA and was surprised to discover that it was the author’s debut.

There were times I wanted to strangle Anna, but then… she is a teenager with all the teenage angst that comes along with the age. Plus, she saw her mother (controlled by a demon) die, so I figured I should cut her some slack. But things kept getting weirder and weirder for Anna, her dad, her friends, and the whole town.

The story is told generally from Anna’s POV with some limited looks into a few other character’s thoughts, so you really get a chance to know Anna well. And, for the most part, I loved her. She was strong and dealing with a lot of things in a more mature manner than one might expect. After her mom’s death, her dad pretty well seems to have lost his way – hoarding and barely keeping his business alive. On top of it all, at school she gets a raw deal with many of the kids calling her “Spook Girl” because of her dad’s business.

It’s not all butterflies and rainbows in this book – expect some gritty moments, some dark moments, and some inappropriate behavior on the part of some of the adults in the town. In a way, it reminded me of a cross between Buffy the Vampire Killer and Warehouse 13 (two of my favorites, btw). I would so love to see these characters again!

I’m having trouble not giving away too many spoilers, because there’s a lot of action, a lot of twists, and some surprises along the way (and I have to admit some tears were shed as well). I’ve put this author on my list to check out her future works. Well done!

Ms. Crow did a good job setting up the world in this first book of her Feather Down series. The world, in a different realm than humanity, is “peopled” by various bird clans who serve as Guardians over human beings. Unfortunately, they have found themselves involved in a generations-long war that takes up all their time and energy and keeps them from fulfilling their mission.

This is an ensemble piece that puts together Freya and her friends so they can work with the clans and help get them back together so they can fulfill their purpose. This group of young creatures also serve to show their elders the importance of judging everyone on their own merits, not just assuming you know what they will do or think based on the group they belong to.

There were a few cases of continuity issues and some word choices I found distracting, but this could very well be because I am an editor at my IRL job and things like that jump out at me. The average reader (especially ones on the middle-grade level which this book is aimed at) probably would not have an issue.

The action and the characters were well-done enough that these few issues did not take me out of the book much. The action–especially the further into the book I got–was non-stop and well-written with some amazing twists. I could see the action in my mind’s eye and think this would make a wonderful movie with the special effects available today.

I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.
