It’s 1954, and twenty-two-year-old Lucia Lafleur has always dreamed of following in her father’s footsteps. While sock hops and poodle skirts occupy her classmates, she dreams of bacteria and broken bones—and the day she’ll finally fix them.

After graduation, a letter arrives, and Lucia reads the words she’s labored a lifetime to earn—”we are pleased to offer you a position at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.” But in the midst of her triumph, her fiancé delivers a crushing ultimatum: forego medical school, or forego marriage.

With fractured hopes, she returns home to Louisiana, expecting nothing of the summer of ’54 but sweet tea and gumbo while she agonizes over her impending choice. There, she unexpectedly befriends Nicholas, a dark-skinned poet whose dignity and intellect are a salve to her aching heart. Their bond, initially forged from a shared love of literature, soon blossoms into something as bewitching as it is forbidden.

Yet her predicament deepens when a trivial misunderstanding between a local white woman and a black man results in a brutal lynching, and the peril of love across the color lines becomes chillingly real. Now, fulfilling her lifelong dream means relinquishing her heart—and escaping Louisiana alive.

Heart-warming, heart-rending and amazingly well written, By the Light of Embers is a book I recommend whole-heartedly to any lover of fiction, regardless of the genre you typically read. Trust me, this book was outside of my comfort zone for a variety of reasons but I was completely intrigued by the blurb, so just had to check it out, even knowing it likely wasn’t going to end well (or at least not in the way I wanted it to end).

The author, Shaylin Gandhi, is remarkably talented. Her prose is beautiful, descriptive, and not one word is ever wasted.  The story is believable and interesting, peppered with authentic historical facts brought alive by characters we really care about.  I really came to care deeply about Lucia, Nicholas and also Sebastian.  The other secondary characters we just as real and well written, but it was those three who mattered most to me.

It’s easy to forget that the Civil Rights Act wasn’t signed into law that long ago.  I had to keep reminding myself we were in the 1950s, not the 1850s because of the attitudes of the people in the book.  Women’s rights, too, were really in their infancy and having such a modern-minded woman like Lucia was enlightening.

I don’t want to talk too much about the story.  Even small tidbits might give away spoilers and that wouldn’t be fair to you as a reader.  I will say this, though, do yourself a favor and read this book.  I don’t think you’ll regret one moment of it.

Fast paced and different, Maximum Trouble was certainly a page-turner.

I have to admit, the blurb sounded a little more romantic suspense than suspense, but this really doesn’t include much romance. Our two “lovers”, Maxi and Zack, are apart for much of the book, so just a heads up–this is a better book for suspense lovers than romance ones.

I really liked Zack. I also really liked Pete (does he get his own story?). I enjoyed their portion of the story much more than the parts with Maxi and her friends and family. It felt more natural and the characters were more true to form. I assume there is a book prior to this one, since Maxi and Zack have a history that’s discussed now and then. I didn’t feel like I was missing anything, exactly, just a little like the story would have been richer and stronger had I read it. Don’t get me wrong, Maximum Trouble stands alone fine.

Maxi got on my nerves now and then. She has a son, one who’s a bit older (my impressions of his age based on behavior was in the high single digits (6 – 8 years). So I expected Maxi to act like a grown up more than she did. She responded oddly to things (like saying “puke” when something was not to her liking, or talking about her manicure) and I didn’t like her much at the start. She felt like a spoiled Kardashian-like girl and so it took me a while to warm up to her. I did, eventually. When the pressure was really on, she came through.

The story was interesting, and I “saw” more of Aruba than I would have imagined possible. I can’t picture a cruise ship being sunk, though, without the full force of the US and Britain coming to bear… not just the small force that went in. The bad guys were really, really bad and the good guys were awesome. There were a few people I couldn’t decide what side they were on, and that made the story even more exciting. Some of the bad guys were TSTL, like Zack’s old boss and assistant. In a movie, I swear they’d have been the comedy relief. I just couldn’t take them seriously.

Those two aside, the plot was tense and exciting. People died I didn’t expect and things happened that I wasn’t ready for. While perhaps not pulse pounding, the story and writing was strong enough to keep me turning pages. There were a few editing errors, mainly wrong words (like “your” instead of “you’re”, for example) but not so many I was thrown out of the story and probably not significant enough that the reader who isn’t a grammar nerd would even notice.

All-in-all, Maximum Trouble was a solid suspense novel. More military thriller (ala Jack Ryan) than suspense, and I enjoyed getting to read it. And I’m still hoping for a book featuring Pete more. He’s a good dude and deserves one.

In Montana to prove her portable solar panel can solve the world’s energy problems, naïve scientist, Dr. Marie Wilson must first fight to survive, and then expose the powerful businessman intent on destroying her life’s work.

Ex-special forces soldier, David Quinn is haunted by the horrors of combat, and yearns to be left alone with his beehives, but agrees to do one last job for his old mentor.

When the scariest man she’s ever met becomes her savior, Marie discovers a heart of gold beats beneath his surly demeanor.

Just a few pages into this story, our heroine, Marie, is alone in a cabin in the middle of nowhere when four men with guns burst in through the door. She’s dressed in long underwear and nothing else, and does whatever she can to escape. Thankfully, one of the men has a change of heart when he realizes what they are actually up to, and helps.

I liked Marie right off. It’s funny, she has this idea that she’s a frightened, incapable woman (I blame this on her good-for-nothing father) but she manages to escape more than once from the people trying to capture or kill her. She’s smart and actually pretty darn fearless. I guess we never know what we’re capable of until we’re put into a situation where we have to step up or die. She was, thankfully, never stupid (okay, one time I questioned what she did, but…) and always smart and brave.

I like David, too. He really just wants to live his life off the grid in peace, but finds himself smack dab in the middle of trouble. Never one to take injustice lying down, he does everything he can to figure out who’s on his side and who isn’t, and to protect Marie.

The suspense portion of this book is pretty well spot on. Lots of action, lots of intrigue, never entirely knowing who’s a good guy and who isn’t (with some exceptions). The suspense and action kept me turning pages. I read this book in just a couple of days because it definitely held my interest. I was honestly surprised to find out one of the cops was not what I thought he was at the end. And I do hope to see the head of the Syndicate get their comeuppance (what a horrible sociopath that person turned out to be).

The romance portion took a little suspension of disbelief. It’s not that Marie and David didn’t have chemistry–they absolutely did. My big issue is, I’m not a fan of “instalove” and these two weren’t together long before they were madly in love with each other. I remember a line from the movie “Speed” where Sandra Bullock’s character says, “…relationships that start under intense circumstances, they never last.” And I always wonder about that when I read this type of book. They meet while dodging bullets, the spend every minute running and dodging bullets and proclaim their love for each other in a few days. What happens when they settle down, raise bees, live a quiet life? Again, I honestly think these two will be fine because at heart they’re both really kind of quiet homebodies, but I probably would have been happier with a “happy for now” than an “HEA” in this case (and, since this is the start of a series, we could see the relationship develop some as the other books are released).

The thing I liked best about this book was the clear, strong relationship the friends had with each other. Clearly there is absolute trust between them, and each would do anything to help one of the others. I like Michael the best of the group (outside of David, of course), but Finn was interesting as well, and were there tidbits of a “twin bond” between Sinclair and David that might come up again? Only time will tell. I’m a sucker for character driven stories, and despite the plentiful action here, it was the strong, interesting characters that kept me reading.

This is a great start to what promises to be an intriguing series.

There are always two sides to a story. Can love withstand the ultimate temptation?

A new Regime has arisen from the havoc and destruction of World War III. Society now has to follow the strict mandates, reign under the dictatorship of His Highest Eminence or suffer the consequences.

Tobias and Kincade are part of a cryptic organization that’s trying to uncover the secrets behind the Regime. Something is suspicious with the new world order—why else would they want to control the most powerful emotion of love? With mandatory arranged marriages at the age of twenty-one, the only way to fight for love is through the Temptation Trials—a government-sponsored reality TV show.

Kincade and Tobias know the rules, but after they meet the women of their dreams, they face a difficult decision. With their impending birthdays around the corner, the guys have to decide if they will bend to the Regime’s will or fight for their relationships.
The documentary was to have been screened in the United States next year. levitra on line However, these pills should be taken before sexual activity, at least before one hour (the recommended timing or follow the instructions which are given to you by doctor if you really feel that meetings at your company are waste of time then the chances of getting affected by erectile dysfunction get increases. viagra in india online This medicine is considered to viagra sale check stock be delightful when compared to the tablets because it is sold in the name of a brand. Lust, mistaken for love, will lead to down a treacherous path. They soon learn that the spirit may be willing, but the flesh is weak.

Can love save their souls, or is lust too tempting?

After reading the first book in this series (told from the women’s POV), I was interested to get the other side of the story. Years ago, there was a failed reality show named “Temptation Island” which basically put people in committed relationships into deliberately sexy circumstances with others to see if they’d cheat. This book series reminds me of that show … on steroids.

As with most dystopian novels, the government is bad here. I’m still not 100% certain why the government chose this particular “rule” for their own, but I’m suspending my disbelief here and running with it since that is sort of the mystery the characters are trying to solve themselves. In the first book, I actually liked the guys better than the girls, for the short time I saw them, so was glad to get to see them again. One thing I enjoyed was the guys’ sense of humor and snark about things. It’s pretty typical (especially for “tough guy” Tobias). However, there was a lot of emotional stuff with them thinking sappy thoughts about the girls that felt a little off. Not that guys aren’t romantic or loving, but it’s not typically the focus, the be-all-end-all of their thoughts.

I suppose this can stand alone in the series, but I think the world-building in this one wasn’t as strong. Possibly because the author assumes the reader has read past books in the series. Other that that (and wondering what was going on with the women) though, I think this could be read alone.

Since Tobias and Kincade were undercover to find out what was going on with this governmental rule, there was a little more digging into the mystery of “how” and “why” here. We got it in the women’s book, too, but not as frequently.

Also, in my own personal set of preferences, I hate romances about cheating. Here, though, it doesn’t feel wrong, exactly, and I’m not sure why that it. Maybe because the guys aren’t around their women here? I’m not sure why. Also–and I had this same issue in the women’s book–I’m not entirely certain I want our main characters to end up with the women they originally loved. It’s true! The author has done a good job selling the other characters here.

While perhaps not as violent and bloody as most dystopian novels, it’s still a decent entry into the genre. Add in plenty of sex and sexual innuendo, and you have a book any adult could enjoy. It’ll be interesting to see where the story goes next.

You know what they say about those creative types…

Playful, rebellious, sensitive and passionate, nobody loves like an artist. These sixteen stories set the stage for racy encounters with bad boy rock stars, sensual actors, and artists seeking their muse. Inside this collection you’ll find:

Whether you’re looking for a playwright provoking her friend’s uptight cop neighbor to help with blocking, two choir men battling for the affection of the girl-next-door, or a struggling writer finding an unusual muse in the Japanese countryside, this collection will have you ready for romance.

Look for some quick, titillating stories? This might just be the perfect book for you.

I went into this anthology thinking I was going to be reading erotic romance, but I think that’s a little misleading. These sixteen stories are all just a few pages long (from three pages to twenty-something) but the common thread is sex in many forms. Though some of these end with a “happy for now” type ending, the focus is definitely on the physical. These character have few inhibitions right from the start and waste little time before getting down to business.

Some of these stories worked better for me than others. I particularly enjoyed “Talk Elizabethan to Me” which was a clever bit of public seduction. And those that included characters who were already acquainted with one another felt more believable, like “The Dividing Line”. Some had a stronger focus on the art they represented, like “Tempo Changes” where the hero describes the changes in the speed and intensity of their sex by use of musical terms, and “Resonance” which used music seductively, even more arousing than the sexual act itself.

In many cases, I did wish for even more description of the sex, though. While the author certainly included many behaviors that reflected the erotic tone of the stories, the intimate details were occasionally lacking. And, I have to be honest and say I don’t really like erotica (as opposed to erotic romance) and these stories definitely danced along that line. I missed the intense emotional connections that I craved. I think many of these stories would provide an amazing jumping off point for longer, more in depth stories–in particular “Mistaken Identity” which left me wanting more–but the author clearly has a wonderful imagination and I admired her ability to wrap sixteen short stories in such a clever trope of art.

So, all-in-all, I appreciated this anthology. It did exactly what it was supposed to do, and should satisfy the reader who is looking for hot sex in small bites. I hope the author creates longer versions of some of these stories. She has a way with words, and managed to create interesting characters in only a few pages, many of whom I really came to care about. Not easy to do with so few words!

Would could go wrong living with his closest and oldest friend?

Apparently, everything. Three months in a small apartment becomes more than complicated. Brody shouldn’t be attracted to his dorky best friend…he most definitely shouldn’t. That would be absurd. She’s a relationship girl and he’s more a one-night-sans-clothes kind of guy.

One drunken dare of strip poker changes everything. Suddenly, two people with too much to lose play a dangerous game. The unapologetic playboy and the girl-next-door have a choice to make, if only their pasts didn’t keep getting in the way of their future.

I really enjoyed reading this novel. The author has created a great, well-rounded cast of characters and a believeable storyline. And, I have to admit, the “friends-to-lovers” trope is my favorite.

The author has an easy way of writing that made me forget I was even reading a book… the story, instead, played out like a movie in my mind. I zipped through the first few chapters without even realizing! I liked Kate a lot. She was focused, driven, but also still a regular gal. That she’d partied a little too hard before catching a plane for the start of the job of a lifetime was believable for a girl her age. Brody was such a solid guy for her. Friends since pretty much forever, their back and forth repartee was just a joy to observe. Add in some great secondary characters (his mom, X and others) and you have the formula for a winning story.

The only thing that I did struggle with was Brody’s overwhelming guilt about his brother. I guess I can understand why he felt that way, but not so much why he just couldn’t move on at least a little. It absolutely ruled his emotional life. His mom was grieving just as badly, but she was doing it in a healthy way that I could understand. I just couldn’t get behind Brody’s behavior (and shame on him for the times he snapped at his mom–she’s a jewel).

Other than that, though, the behind-the-scenes football information and getting to observe what goes on before the team actually hits the field was interesting. I’d never realized some of that stuff happened! And I did like how the author portrayed Brody and Kate’s switch from just friends, to more than friends … it was believable, too. The sex scenes were fluid and very, very hot and a lot of the growing romance was really touching, largely due to the background they shared.

All-in-all a solid, fun, romantic story. I’m really glad I had the chance to read it. I don’t typically pick up new adult (I’m ::: mumble mumble ::: years past that age), but grabbed this as a favor and it was a gem. If you’re a fan of the genre (and maybe even if you aren’t!), you should give this book a try. I’m betting you’ll be just as glad as I was.

THE GODS ARE FUNNY.

Being marooned is bad enough, but the fact that the island is also the home of Euryale, elder sister to Medusa, makes the situation a touch worse. The only thing keeping Alex from being petrified is the fact that Euryale has taken a liking to the blundering mortal.

For now.

What follows next is a wild, adventurous tale filled with heroes, gods, monsters, love, and war that is nothing short of legendary.

Whenever Greek gods get involved in anything, the result is typically chaotic and messy. This story is no exception.

The story starts with Alex being squashed (and mostly killed) by a whale (who was originally a Gorgon…it’s a long story). Thus begins an eventful and occasionally confusing tale of love and adventure. In order to save himself (sort of), Alex agrees to find a husband for the sister of the Gorgon who crushed him, Euryale, who’s actually a pretty decent woman, aside from those pesky snakes and eyes that turn a person to stone. In no time at all, Alex is smitten and the feelings are returned by Euryale two-fold.

But they were set up by Athena, and her sister Aphrodite is ticked off. After all, just who is the goddess of love, for crying out loud? And so Alex and Euryale find themselves pawns in a real life game of chess between Ares, Aphrodite and Athena (with a little help from others like Hermes and Hephaestus, amongst others).

I’m a Greek mythology geek. I studied it in school, I’ve loved other fiction works that include it, was thrilled when it became more mainstream via Rick Riordan, so was more than happy to grab this book for review. The author certainly understands how remarkably petty and arrogant Greek gods can be, especially when they tamper in the mortal world. He really humanized some immortals, like Kharon, who is fooled once by Alex and has a bit of a sense of humor about it. Sort of. He knows how to hold a grudge, too.

I did have some issue with how quickly Euryale and Alex fell in love, and have to admit that the story was confusing for awhile because so much was happening and we hopped between Athena and Ares, Alex and various gods and demi-gods, Ares and Aphrodite, etc. I might not have kept reading if I’d not accepted this for review since I was left scratching my head a bit and had to go back and re-read parts to make sure I was understanding the plot.  All of that was necessary to set things up and once it gelled, it was just a fun read. The author has a great sense of humor (the blurb absolutely sold me) and made the story incredibly irreverent and amusing.

The ending wraps up Alex and Euryale’s story, but it does introduce the next story inside the epilogue and I’m glad Jessica will get her own story. She’s the catalyst to much of the conflict in The Gorgon Bride but it really wasn’t her fault, and the author managed to make her a very sympathetic character.

Like humor that just a little sideways? Enjoy Greek myths? Looking for a book that’s just pure entertainment? You should absolutely try The Gorgon Bride. I’m glad I did.

The suspense is high in in Under the Radar.

Dee J. Adams does a good job keeping the reader turning pages in her latest romantic suspense novel. It’s a decent premise: witnesses to a crime having to hide before the trial to stay alive. These four, though, don’t use the Marshalls…they take off on their own. Gathering supplies, including common sense items like wet wipes (a nice touch of reality) they head into the woods… four folks with only one thought: stay alive. Romance was the farthest thing from their minds.

Of course, things begin to change between them. They see each other in a light they hadn’t before. Desperate situations can bring out strengths and traits that would never have been shown under regular circumstances. I was both glad to see the two couples grow together, and a bit frustrated by having them share page time. I appreciate why the author chose to do what she did, but because each couple didn’t get a full story to themselves, it did keep me from being fully invested in either of them. Also, it’s always tough to balance the “run for your life” type suspense with a growing romance.

The suspense, though, was top notch and I have no quibbles there. I haven’t read anything by the author before, and I know this is part of a series. I could sense that fact in a few tidbits, but honestly the books stands well on its own. I’m sure that followers of the series might catch little innuendos and facts that I may have missed, but my enjoyment wasn’t marred by this fact.

Looking for a romantic suspense that’s heavy on well-written suspense? Give this one a try. I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

Dark Pleasures is the first book I’ve read in this series. I’m a very picky paranormal romance reader, and I’m really exhausted by vampires so I went into this a bit reserved. Let’s start out with the good (and there is SO much good about this book, and likely the entire series):

The world-building was unbelievably fantastic. First off, the author does provide a glossary at the beginning, which I read carefully and with great thanks. It explains much of the mythology behind her world, a world that is complex and amazing. I can’t remember the last time I read a book like this that had such a deep, intricate myth. Honestly, my head hurts thinking about the author creating it. Ten stars (if I could!) for the world-building alone. Special thanks to the character who jokingly called the Pure Ones Elves and the Dark Ones Vampires…it helped get a solid picture in my head.

The characters are so real, unique and three-dimensional. Devlin, in particular (and Innana) seemed really fluid. It’s clear the author knows them inside and out and they just utterly live on the page. I struggled a little with Grace, the heroine. I know she’s been diagnosed with Aspergers, but I know a few folks with that diagnosis and they’re aren’t quite as wooden and stilted as she is. In fact, for the most part, you almost wouldn’t realize they’re on the autism spectrum except for a few quirks, unless you spend copious amounts of time with them. That said, two other things come into play with Grace. First, she’s a genius…like Einstein smart. And, there’s clearly some mystery about her background that will come into play that may figure into her personality as well. Those things aside, she’s just fun to read about. She really has no idea when she’s being inappropriate, and you sure as heck don’t need to wonder what she’s thinking when she’s around you. She’s an open book about everything, including her unusual sex drive.

The plot, too, is as complex as the world-building. And herein lies my only real “complaint”. Because this was my first introduction to the series I was really pretty lost. The author does some backstory loading via Sophia at the beginning, plus her glossary, and Devlin does some thinking about Medusa in the first chapter, but it only helps a little. Between the fact that the plot in very complicated, there’s also a plethora of characters here, some that clearly had their own books prior to this one (like Ryu who’s newly married). Trying to keep the cast of characters straight (and remembering who is a Pure One, who is a Dark One, who is made, who is born, etc) and also piecing together the plot was enough to make me want to stop reading. Honestly, had I not been doing this for a review, I might have. But I wouldn’t have quit the series–to the contrary, I would have grabbed book one and played catch-up! If not for this problem, the rating here would have been much higher.

All in all, I have to say that the author, Aja James, is amazingly good. I foresee great things for her down the road. She’s creative, innovative, well written. Her skill is undeniable. My only recommendation outside of “get the entire series” is that you read them in order in order to enjoy the gift she’s given us to the fullest.

Sheltered and cosseted, Sonnet Mendoza abided by her papi’s wishes her whole life: no boys, studies first and always. Now an ER nurse in a busy Chicago hospital, medical school is so close Sonnet can taste it. Just like her father always wanted. Just like she can taste all the things she wants—like Griffith Parker, the man of her dreams and her new housemate.

Working “graves” in a large hospital as a security guard while attending the police academy during the day doesn’t leave ex-Marine Griffith Parker any personal time, but after meeting the beautiful Sonnet Mendoza, business as usual is anything but. Sassy, smart…and interested in him, too? Except, she’s made an art of keeping her distance, and she’s been clear that her plans don’t include him. But the heart wants what the heart wants. His wants Sonnet. He’ll put it on the line to win her.

Great characters are the glue to this story. I absolutely adored both Sonnet and Griffith, and the author included a diverse and interesting group of secondary characters as well. I’m a huge fan of character driven stories, and this one definitely fits that criteria.

Sonnet is living on her own for the first time. Her much loved father passed away the year before and she’s learning how to really stand on her own two feet. She’s beautiful. smart, intelligent and driven, but finding that maintaining a house on a nurse’s income isn’t that easy. She decides she needs a roommate.

Griffith is equally beautiful, smart, intelligent and driven. To be honest, my only complaint about the main characters was that they really didn’t have any flaws. From the moment Sonnet and Griffith met each other, Griffith was there for her whenever she needed him. He clearly wanted more than friendship, right from the start, but was incredibly patient with Sonnet’s reticence and put up with a lot of “no” from her.

This brings me to the sex portion of this story. It was honestly just about perfect. Unlike so many erotic romances, these two didn’t jump into bed immediately. There was a lot of fantasizing (and self-pleasuring) and then plenty of foreplay before they finally came together. I appreciated that the author let these two develop a deep relationship before they hit the sack. Once they did, they certainly scorched the sheets, but it was all appropriate to the plot.

To be honest, there really wasn’t a lot of conflict in the story, or much doubt these two both belonged together and would end up together. There’s a little at the end regarding a job change, but in my mind there was no way Griffith was going to give up that easily.

So, in a nutshell, this was simply a well written, sexy novel populated with three dimensional characters I cared a lot about. Did I wish I’d felt a little more anxiety about them? Sure. But in the end it didn’t matter that much. I just had a lot of fun reading about them, I completely enjoyed the cast of character (main and secondary) and I never once even thought of putting the book down. This author is very talented and I can’t wait to see what else she comes up with.
