Charlene is one tough cookie. She is so young to have so much responsibility placed on her shoulders. Between trying to finish her degree, pay the bills, and take care of her brother, Charlene just can’t make ends meet no matter how hard she tries. It was heartbreaking to watch Charlene try to do it all, and I was relieved when she finally decided to ask for some help. However, the help Charlene gets might come in an unexpected form. When she learns the truth about Eden, her family, and the evil they fight, I wondered if Charlene would stay, or run away.

The relationship between Charlene and Zack escalates very quickly. The sexual chemistry between them is explosive, but they also shared some very touching, tender moments as well. Even though their relationship became serious in such a short period of time, their relationship seems to work. Charlene and Zack mesh so well it was easy for me to forget they hadn’t known each other very long.

I must admit I found the community of Eden and some of its problems very odd. At first I thought that Eden was an isolated community in regards to the nature of its inhabitants. However, toward the end of the book, I learned this wasn’t the case. I can’t help but wonder if some of Eden’s problems could be solved by reaching out to other groups more often rather than keeping to themselves so much.

I really enjoyed reading Ms. Buchbinder’s mythology of werewolves and jinnis. There is enough detail to provide an interesting base to the story, and the conclusion is very satisfying. However, I was delighted to learn that there is a sequel. I eagerly anticipate learning more about werewolves, jinnis, and their volatile history in the next book.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Kiss of the Silver Wolf. It is a fun, fast read sure to delight fans of paranormal romance. I plan to pick up the sequel to this exciting tale very soon.

Morning’s Journey is the second book detailing Gyan and Arthur’s adventures and begins immediately following the events of the first book, Dawnflight. Anyone wishing to read this book needs to read Dawnflight first.

When I first met Gyan and Arthur in Dawnflight, I grew to like them both very much. They are wonderfully rounded characters, and I just knew they were meant to be together. As I began Mornings Journey, I eagerly anticipated reading about the great things they would accomplish together. However, as I read, it became clear that Gyan and Arthur haven’t become the strong team I know they could be. I was surprised by how much time they spend at odds with each other. Arthur clearly loves Gyan, but he doesn’t realize his actions are smothering at times. Gyan seems determined to question and mistrust practically everything that Arthur does. The gap between them grew with every page.

An unexpected pregnancy only added to the strain on their budding relationship. Gyan loves life as a warrior and knows that children would require sacrifice on her part. Consequently she doesn’t truly want to have children right away. However, birth control options are limited during this time period, and Gyan and Arthur both know that pregnancy is nearly always a possibility when having sex. I found it very hard to watch the pregnancy push Gyan and Arthur even further apart when it could have been something to strengthen their connection.

When unimaginable tragedy strikes, Gyan and Arthur’s bond is almost completely shattered. Gyan forcefully pushes people away from her, and she seems most severe on those who care about her the most. Gyan’s treatment of one of my favorite characters is absolutely atrocious. I can’t give this character’s name without spoiling the story, but I will say that she places an inordinate amount of blame on them. This person had demonstrated unswerving loyalty to her and her family time after time, and it was as if none of that mattered at all. She made this person feel completely worthless, and the actions she takes against them have probably done irreparable damage to their reputation. This coupled with the problems between Gyan and Arthur, made Morning’s Journey very difficult to read at times. Toward the end of the story, Gyan slowly begins to realize that she has been too harsh. I’m sorry to say that the relationship had not been mended at the tale’s conclusion. I can only hope that Gyan reaches out to her friend in the next book.

Despite all the turmoil, I am pleased to say that Gyan and Arthur eventually find their way back to each other. They have scars on their hearts, but I could see a glimmer of the wonderful couple they could be in the very last pages of the book.

Overall, Morning’s Journey is a good book. Gyan and Arthur certainly travel a rocky path, but I believe they will find happiness together eventually. I recommend this tale of love and loss to fans of historical romance.

When I read the description for Dawnflight, I was immediately intrigued by the idea of Gyan, traditionally known as Guinevere, being a warrior rather than a victim. Gyan certainly lived up to my expectations. She is a strong and courageous woman, and although she finds herself in the unenviable position of having to marry for political reasons, she is definitely not a damsel in distress. She is still the warrior and leader she has been trained to be. Even though Gyan wants peace for her clan, she isn’t willing to compromise her character by pretending to be something she’s not. I admire her spirit.

It is abundantly clear that Urien is not the man for Gyan. He is a thoroughly detestable man who treats most people poorly, especially women. However, Urien doesn’t see himself this way and seems genuinely confused when Gyan becomes upset with him. Gyan deluded herself from the beginning that she could ever be with Urien. They were never comfortable around each other and he clearly didn’t respect her or her people. Urien tried to be on his best behavior at first, but he couldn’t hide his true personality for long. His treatment of Gyan is appalling, especially toward the end of the book. I found myself very frustrated with Gyan and her reluctance to walk away from the match. While she has to marry a Brytoni nobleman, she doesn’t have to marry Urien. She still has a choice, and yet Gyan acts as if Urien is her only option even though many of her friends and family try to tell her otherwise. I couldn’t help but wonder if Gyan would recognize just how dangerous Urien is before it is too late.

Arthur is the opposite of Urien in every way. He treats everyone around him with respect, even the people he’s conquered in battle. From the moment Arthur and Gyan meet, the attraction is clear. They are well suited to each other. I could just as easily picture them in a passionate embrace as fighting side by side on the battle field. Unfortunately, their romance is complicated and finding a way to be together won’t be easy.

The characters in Dawnflight are truly compelling, but Ms. Headlee has also created a vivid world for her characters to inhabit. The day to day details Ms. Headlee provides made it easy for me to lose myself in Gyan’s world. I will admit that the pacing did suffer in a few places, but my patience was definitely rewarded as there are plenty of faster paced sections to satisfy readers who love a good battle, whether fought with swords or words.

Readers should also know that Ms. Headlee has provided supplementary material at the back of the book with lists of names, places, and pronunciation guides to some of the more difficult words. I enjoyed reading through these sections and encourage others to do the same. In fact, some readers might want to read these sections before diving in to the tale.

I truly enjoyed reading Dawnflight. Ms. Headlee’s version of the Arthurian legend is unique, and Arthur and Gyan’s romance is timeless. I highly recommend Dawnflight to fans of historical romance. I’m looking forward to reading the second installment in this series very soon.

Penny is a very entertaining heroine. Her inner thoughts and the things she writes in her diary never failed to bring a smile to my face. I love how good she is with her students. However, Penny is very insecure. She frequently jumps to conclusions about James and his motivations concerning her and the park she loves. I could understand her misgivings the first time around, but they seemed to straighten things out fairly quickly. Unfortunately at the very next sign of trouble, Penny is ready to believe the worst again. The situation Penny and James find themselves in is very difficult, but without trust they aren’t going to make it very far. Will Penny finally give James a chance or will she let her insecurities cloud her judgment?

Some of the secondary characters in this short story are very nasty at the beginning but undergo some dramatic changes by the end. I understood the reason for one character’s change, but some of the others changed very quickly and without much explanation. Consequently, I found those parts unrealistic.

I also think that Penny and James’ relationship progresses too quickly, especially given Penny’s inability to trust James. However, the ending was still sweet and the situation with the park is solved in an interesting and fun way.

“Just Right” by Arlene Hittle (Contemporary-sensual)

I truly felt sorry for Callie. She has fame, good looks, and money. From the outside, her life might look perfect. However, I don’t envy the price Callie has paid for fame. As I watched Callie struggle to manage her public persona versus her personal life, it was easy to see why she needed a vacation out of the spotlight.

Ty and his brothers are certainly an interesting group. They teased each other unmercifully, but they also cared for and looked out for each other. Callie was nothing like Ty expected her to be, and their first encounter with each other was anything but smooth. I could certainly sense some underlying chemistry. However, I found it very hard to get a sense of what kind of couple Callie and Ty will be. He is very jealous and possessive right from the start even though they don’t know each other very well. Most of their encounters are antagonistic despite their physical attraction. In spite of these issues, Ty is a good man who just wants to protect the woman he loves from the ugly side of the media.

I must say that I found the “happy for now” ending to be very realistic and a good solution for Callie and Ty. Callie’s schedule is very demanding and while being famous has definite drawbacks, she isn’t ready to leave the spotlight just yet. I’m not sure what the future will hold for this new couple, but I think they are on the right track.

“Red” was by far the most unusual story in this collection. There is a lot about Garnet’s world that I don’t understand. Even Garnet doesn’t seem to know much about it. I definitely think the magic and the history of Garnet’s family needed to be expanded in greater detail. While a bit of mystery is intriguing, Garnet was put in a position of making major, life changing decisions mere moments after learning that her family is much more than it seems. I understand that her family thought they were protecting Garnet by allowing her some time to live a normal life, but I think it is unfair to spring everything on her right before she’s called to make a monumental decision.

Garnet’s relationship with Max ignites from the moment they meet and the chemistry between them burns brighter with each turn of the page. Sex between them is nothing short of scorching. However, I do wish they had had more time to get to know each other. Unfortunately time is something neither of them seem to have. Does Garnet make the right choice, or will the night end in disappointment?

“Death Sat Beside Her” by Jennifer Anderson (Suspense-sensual)

Elysse is a sweet girl, but she is stuck conforming to her mother’s idea of what a young lady should be. Her mom strikes me as very old fashioned and controlling. I know that her mother loves her, but it was clear to me that Elysse was struggling to gain her mother’s approval and was losing her individuality in the process.

Everything changes when Liam walks into her life. The attraction between them is clear from the start. Unfortunately, Elysse has a boyfriend. As I read, I wasn’t sure how the love triangle was going to play out. I can’t give any details without ruining the story, but I will say that I found it very easy to cheer for Liam.

I enjoyed watching Elysse begin to distance herself from the carefully crafted image she’s maintained for so long. Elysse says she’s making the changes because she wants too, but I couldn’t help but wonder if Elysse was simply trying to remake herself into the kind of girl she thought Liam would like.

It was very easy for me to figure out who the murderer was. The suspense of this story came from not knowing who the next victim would be and wondering when Liam and Elysse would put all the pieces of the puzzle together. The conclusion is very satisfying, and I have no doubt that Liam and Elysse are well on their way to a happy ending.

“Sins of the Father” by Janet Eaves (Contemporary-spicy)

Aurora has led a very sheltered life thanks to her overprotective aunts. I must admit that I’m not entirely sure why Aurora’s family went to such great lengths to insulate her from the world. There is some violence in Aurora’s past, but she was too young at the time to remember anything and drastic steps were taken to conceal Aurora’s identity. Aurora certainly needed some degree of protection, but the situation with the aunts just didn’t sit right with me.

Consequently, it is very easy to understand Aurora’s powerful urge to break away. I do think she made some very poor decisions in the process. She is very trusting of Philip, a man she knows nothing about, and she puts herself in an extremely vulnerable position. Fortunately, Philip is a very nice guy, and I enjoyed watching Aurora and Philip relax in each other’s company.

As the story progressed, and the truth of Aurora’s past is revealed, Ms. Eaves did a good job of building the suspense. When Aurora finally learns about her parents and who Philip is, I couldn’t wait to find out what their next step would be. Unfortunately, the story ended at this point. I must admit to being disappointed as I had hoped for a more satisfying conclusion.

“Dixie White and the Seven Dates” by Cat Shaffer (Contemporary-Sweet)

Dorothea’s story is easily my favorite from this anthology. She had my sympathy from page one when she learns some ugly things about her boyfriend. Rather than wallow in self pity, Dorothea decides to take control of her life for the first time. As I read, I had the pleasure of watching Dorothea blossom into a vibrant, caring young woman I’d be proud to call a friend. It took courage for Dorothea to walk away from everything she’s ever known. Fortunately, Dorothea discovers a wonderful small town in Kentucky that nurtures her new found desire to grown and change.

Ms. Shaffer did an excellent job creating the charming small town of Cardington, Kentucky, and most of the people who lived there were just as lovely, especially Lou and Len. Without their support and encouragement, Dorothea’s quest for independence would have been much more difficult.

The blind dates Dorothea goes on are entertaining. However, the men she met seemed more like caricatures rather than real people. Some of the dates were better than others, but I wasn’t surprised that Dorothea didn’t really click with any of them.

Rick is definitely a great guy. He and Dorothea are very comfortable around each other, and they have the beginnings of great chemistry. Their slow dance is particularly memorable. I have no doubt that they will grow into a wonderful couple.

I enjoyed reading And They Lived Happily Ever After. Each story is different with a unique take on various classic fairy tales. I recommend this collection to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance.

I must warn readers that Katia’s story does contain some graphic violence. Despite everything that Katia has been through, she still finds beauty in small things and tries to protect innocent people when she can. I admire her strength and kindness, particularly toward children. However her self esteem is very low. She believes that her power makes her evil. When Julius walks into her life, he tries to convince her that she is not the evil being her father tried to shape her into. Will Katia embrace her power, or let it destroy her and the one man she’s ever cared about?

Julius is a very good man who is exceedingly patient with Katia. His tenderness is truly touching. I wasn’t surprised when Katia and Julius developed feelings for each other. However, I think it happened a bit too quickly given the circumstances they met under. When Julius found Katia, she was barely alive and needed a lot of time to recover. Katia is understandably paranoid and suspicious of everyone she meets. She spends a lot of time brooding about this, and I must admit that I began to find those passages a bit repetitive. Although Katia does begin to let her guard down around Julius, most of their time together is spent with him nursing her back to health. Then the tables are turned and Katia has to rescue Julius after he is kidnapped. I would have liked to see them spend more time together on more equal footing in order for their connection to feel more genuine.

The last part of Cursed is very fast paced and had me flying through the pages. Each time I thought Katia and Julius were safe, something else would happen and they were plunged back in danger. I really had no idea how their story would end. The conclusion is satisfying, but I still have some doubts concerning Katia and Julius’ future. I can only hope that Ms. Ross has a sequel in the works to answer my lingering questions.

Overall, I liked Cursed. Katia is a well rounded character who deserves every shred of happiness she can get. I recommend Cursed to anyone who enjoys fast paced science fiction with a bit of romance.

While she’s certainly not like any grandma I’ve ever met, I could clearly picture the woman Ms. Cross created. Although, it was always entertaining to watch Cora and her grandmother, sometimes I do feel like it was a little over the top. Besides her sense of humor, one of the things I like most about Cora is her innate kindness. She is willing to give most people a chance. She sees friendship and possibilities in people that others wouldn’t give a second glance. Consequently, she manages to attract a colorful assortment of friends that really enhance this tale.

Cora and “bad boy” Max have the beginnings of great chemistry. Their first encounter is not exactly pleasant, but once they spend more time together, I could see their attraction beginning to grow. However, every time that Cora and Max got close to acting on their budding romance, something happened to interrupt them. I found this exceedingly frustrating, and I sincerely hope that Ms. Cross has plans to develop their relationship further in the next book.

I have every reason to hope that there will be a sequel to Lunar Rampage. While the ending was satisfying, it also raised a lot of questions and was very open ended. Cora and Max aren’t quite out of danger yet. I’m definitely looking forward to reading about what happens to them next.

Garreth’s honesty also made it possible for he and Essie to work very closely together. The more time they spent together, the stronger their bond became. Their chemistry is like a slow burn always just under the surface. I also enjoyed their teasing banter. The game over figuring out Essie’s true name was always a source of amusement. Some of the possibilities Garreth and his friends came up with had me laughing out loud. Another reason Essie and Garreth are such a good couple is Garreth ability to balance Essie. She has a tendency to obsess about her work to the point of not eating or resting enough. Garreth is also very serious about their work, but he also knows the value of taking time to relax and coming back to a task refreshed and renewed. However, both Garreth and Essie have rather disturbing dreams that seem to suggest they might lose each other while trying to prevent the next disaster. Will they lose the love they’ve only just discovered?

I would have liked to know a bit more about the villain of this tale. As Essie and Garreth work to solve the mystery, there is someone in the shadows with their own reasons for wanting the inscription deciphered. However once this character was unmasked, the reasons given for their actions were remarkably simple I found this surprising as this person would have had to conceal their nefarious intentions for hundreds of years. For someone to be so deceitful for so long, I would have expected more complex motives.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Court of the Hawk. Ms. Peterson has created a beautiful world, and Essie and Garreth are a wonderful couple. Fans of fantasy romance won’t want to miss this enchanting tale.

The one character that did have some serious personal issues was kept behind the scenes for most of the story. I think that many of the characters in this story had great potential, but without some flaws, they didn’t quite come to life in my mind.

Overall, I liked In Name Only. Lucie is likable and her quiet strength is admirable. Her happy ending is well deserved. I recommend In Name Only to anyone looking for a sweet, historical romance

Eva’s past is a mystery for the majority of the story. The first chapter is the only glimpse into her history until the very end of the book. Most of the story focuses on how Eva matches couples. It was fun watching her pair up different couples, but I kept wishing the focus would return to Eva and Noah’s budding relationship. They had great chemistry and some very charged encounters, but I was left wanting to know more. Noah clearly knew who Eva was and had some sort of connection to her past. I was hoping that my curiosity for knowledge would be satisfied as the story unfolded. Unfortunately, all the information about Eva’s past is revealed at the very end of the story all at once. While the information did clear up most of my questions, I felt that the story ended very abruptly. Eva learned so much about her past, her magic, and Noah in the space of a few moments, but she wasn’t given any time to absorb it. If I were in her situation, I would have needed some time to process it all. Instead, everything just ended. While Eva’s story has a happy ending, I felt that there was more to tell.

I wondered if Des was really just that mean, or if perhaps somehow Des’ girlfriend was behind the legal action. I eagerly dove into the pages searching for the answer.

The first part of the book that covers Charlotte’s adventures in France with her friends is very entertaining and fast paced. However, I must admit that I had a hard time getting in to the middle section of the story. When Charlotte goes back home to New York, she tries to resume her normal life. Unfortunately the fiasco with Des keeps coming up. On top of it all, Charlotte’s boss dumps a ton of work on her, which keeps her working practically nonstop. Despite her intense work schedule, Charlotte and her friends still manage to find time for fun. Their favorite past times seem to be shopping and drinking alcohol. In fact, that seems to be about all Charlotte does in her free time. While I have nothing against a good, strong drink, Charlotte and her friends take it to another level. My head hurt just reading about the amount of alcohol they consumed and then still had to drag themselves out of bed the next morning to go to work. The cycle of working and getting drunk was repetitive and definitely struck me as extraneous. I was left wishing that the focus would return to the problem of the restraining order.

Charlotte’s relationship with Liam is interesting and definitely the best thing about the middle part of this tale. Charlotte and Liam have a good chemistry, and I give them bonus points for making a long distance relationship work. Liam is sweet and extremely understanding about Charlotte’s situation with Des. I like the fact that he encourages her to be proactive about the situation so that she can move on with her life. While the physical part of their relationship is definitely a huge part of the story, I like that Ms. Kennedy got Charlotte and Liam out of the bedroom occasionally so they could go on some fun dates where they could really get to know each other.

Overall, I liked Charlotte’s Restrained. I found the truth behind the restraining order very surprising, and Charlotte and her friends are certainly a colorful bunch. I recommend Charlotte’s Restrained to anyone looking for a fun, contemporary romance.
