Sylvester was an intelligent and thorough investigator. I enjoyed seeing him investigate all of the clues about what was really happening in his community. He didn’t leave a single stone unturned no matter how little it seemed to be related to the case at hand, and that made him a fascinating sheriff to read about. His dedication to his work and his strong emotional bond to the people he served only made me like him even more. I couldn’t have picked a better sheriff for this town.

This book had such a large cast of characters that I struggled to keep track of everyone.Just about everybody was introduced in the beginning, but their relationships to each other weren’t always made clear immediately. The combination of getting to know a few dozen different folks and remembering how they all knew each other made it hard to be sure of who was who, especially for the characters who only popped up occasionally.

The mystery itself was well written. I appreciated the way the plot introduced various hints about who may or may not have been responsible for the theft of the corpse as well as everything that happened after that scene. It gave me exactly enough information to come up with my own theories about who the culprit was and why they did it without making anything too obvious.

This is the third instalment in a series. It can be read on its own or out of order.

The Bartered Body should be read by anyone who enjoys thought-provoking mysteries.

Elise is an interesting character with quite a backstory. I loved learning about her mother, the apothecary, and herbal lore that was woven throughout the story. After discovering her husband is involved in something he shouldn’t have been, she starts to spiral out of control. This leads to her becoming more than a little paranoid but, at times, it’s a well warranted paranoia. It seems like everyone is lying to her, so how can she trust anyone? At every turn, she’s finding more evidence that her husband is plotting against her and she has no idea who to turn to for help. Honestly, I probably would have found myself feeling the same way she did during most of the book.

There are a lot of twists and turns in this book, some that I saw coming and others that took me completely by surprise. The Poison Garden is a fast-paced, thrill ride of a novel, that left me wondering what was lurking around the next corner. Although at times, the plot is over the top and unbelievable, I didn’t find it to be a detraction. Rather, that kind of insanity feeds my need for drama and made me enjoy this all the more.

Having enjoyed a previous book by the author, After Nightfall, I was excited to be able to read The Poison Garden as well. I now consider myself a full-fledged fan and can’t wait to get my hands on her other two novels. Will be interested to see what her next novel brings as well.

Bruntfield, New Jersey, just another banal town in a part of the country that nobody thinks about, was about to become famous; or rather, more aptly put, infamous. People sauntered past lackluster shops unaware that in a few days, the lackadaisical streets would bear the rabid frustrations that divided the nation; a pus-like bitterness that was held in check by the demands of everyday survival and the distractions offered by obsessive consumerism and brazen media.

Some would inevitably blame the cascade of events on the weather, since the origins could be found on a hot summer day in 2006. Sure, just about all summer days are hot, but this one was close to the record, and humid to boot. By the end of July, the Northeast coast was suffering under a sweltering heat wave. Despite the humidity, no one could remember the last time it had rained. A hundred-year drought was predicted, they’d said.

Bruntfield, among the many places under this curse, had its water supply so severely depressed that the city authorities were forced to impose water rationing. As if that wasn’t enough, the excessive load on air conditioners led to incessant brownouts. With the weather nothing less than insufferable, suffocating, oppressive, even provoking, tempers flared along with the temperature. But the local situation, as bad as it was, was about to get worse.

I don’t know what I was expecting when I picked up this book, but I can honestly say that it was not what I wound up getting. The ending completely took me by surprise, I had not even entertained it as a possibility. Now, I can be a rather gullible reader, so that might have something to do with it, but I was completely stunned when I read the final pages.

The Wives was one of the most insane, engrossing books I’ve read all year. I have this weird fascination with polygamy and I’m not even sure where it came from. However, the idea of plural marriage is alluring and therefore, this book was a must read. I’d highly recommend this to anyone who loves a great psychological thriller packed with twists and turns you weren’t expecting. Although I don’t often re-read books, I’d love to read this one again, knowing the things that I know now, and wonder if it would change anything. I will definitely have to pick up more of the author’s books now.

The backdrop, an historic inn, known for its spooky past, is the perfect setting and adds a spot-on mood to this tale. Elements of creepiness flavor the story giving the reader goose bumps at times. It’s engaging how the author ties a mystery from the past to the mystery the police and the FBI are currently trying to solve. A researcher of historical crimes is on the scene, knowing in her gut that if she unlocks the keys to the past, she might be able to add valuable information to the investigation happening now. Not only are two parallel investigations unrolling, which are fun for the reader to follow, but when ghosts appear with a message, one has to wonder what part they ultimately will play. There is a dash of love-story blended into the mix, for fans of romance, but it is not the focus. It, like the other elements in this eclectic tale, is well done.

Though this is a part of a series, it is a stand-alone story and is completely understandable if one has never read any of the other books. It’s an entertaining read, and I would definitely seek out other books by this author because she does a good job with characterization, plots, and setting.

This was my first book involving the characters Sharpe and Donovan. Rival’s Break is the 10th book in the series, however, I don’t think not having read the previous books took anything away from the story. To begin with the setting is in Maine and involves boats and/or yachts. Add a mystery and suspense and you have me hooked.

I will admit it seemed there were a lot of characters in this book and sometimes that can make a confusing read. I liked all of their personalities, I just wasn’t sure who was “who” now and then. However, I got the impression that some characters were known in previous books which would help immensely with character recognition. So, maybe this book is not totally a stand-alone, but rather should be read in series order.

I have obviously been remiss in not reading Carla Neggers books. If the other previous 9 books are like this, that means I will have 9 more books in a series to read. It’s not often you know you have so much reading ahead of you that you enjoy.

In looking up the books in this series, I noticed Carla Neggers is quite prolific. She has several series as well as some stand-alones. I also noticed there wasn’t one book that didn’t have an average of at least 4 stars. Great reading.

The synopsis does a really good job giving you an idea what this book is about. What it doesn’t tell you is that the reader isn’t left with a typical happily ever after. There is a twist that left me feeling like a pretzel with no book boyfriend to dream about. However, the story was uniquely refreshing.

The story was a well written attention-gripping page turner from beginning to end. Given the circumstances I will say that the heroine, Teresa, was really the only character that I related to with out giving away spoilers. She was the one consistent character through out the book.

I can say that this book is like no other that I’ve read. I’m pretty sure this is the shortest review that I’ve ever written but I’m limited to what I can say because I don’t want to spoil anything. Just go pick up a copy and find out for yourself why this book is one of a kind.

Sam and Goldie make a great team. Sam is smart, resourceful, and deeply cares for his daughter. He’s also still clearly in love with his ex-wife. He’s the kind of man who doesn’t hesitate to help those in need, and I really liked getting to know him and watching him rebuild his life. Goldie is such a sweet dog! She stole my heart, and every scene she is in. Her personality shines through each page. The pictures of the golden retriever that inspired Goldie’s character are absolutely adorable and truly furthered my enjoyment of the story. I couldn’t help but smile every time I opened the book!

This collection is quick and easy to read. All the stories are less than 20 pages long and each can be read in less than fifteen minutes. This is perfect for when time is short and you don’t want to start a full-length book, but still want something entertaining to read. The mysteries are fairly light with just a dash of suspense, and the violence is minimal and never graphic. While each story contains a stand-alone mystery, I recommend reading them in order to follow the progression of Sam’s life after leaving the police force.

I’m so glad I had the opportunity to read Copper and Goldie. The stories are fun, the characters likable, and the final “tail” is the perfect ending to this heartwarming collection. Fans of cozy mysteries would do well to pick up a copy today.

I have some catching up to do because I enjoyed Close Contact so much, I have to go and find the first two books in the Body Armor series. I didn’t need to have read the first two to enjoy this novel which I greatly appreciated. It’s because the characters from the first two showed up to help out Miles and Maxi that piqued my interest. Even as secondary characters, they were delish. This book had a lot of pages but I whipped through the book because the pace, the action, the romance, the intrigue, and the suspense and mystery of who was behind Maxi’s harassment kept me glued to its pages. What a great read!

My favorite aspects of this story are the cats and how Miles interacted with them. They play important roles in a few pivotal scenes. I adore a big, tough hero getting purrs from a kitty so that right there makes Miles the perfect hero. I have a hard time describing Maxi because she’s many things – confident and vulnerable, sweet yet determined, and loyal to a fault. It’s her loyalty and gumption that put her in harm’s way. It seems an odd reason to put her in the cross hairs of criminal intent, especially because she is so nice and caring to everybody she meets, but since when do criminals make sense?

The very first chapter sets up the mystery. It starts off with one puzzle but things quickly heat up to the point that Miles calls in his buddies to help out. I love that part of Ms. Foster’s novels. There’s the sense of friends becoming family, of caring, loyalty and a great sense of fun and camaraderie. It always makes me happy to be a reader during those times because I feel like I’m right there, part of the community. I also like watching Maxi be overwhelmed by how many people actually show up to help out. She’s totally bemused because everyone accepts her for who she is and they do not doubt that she’s in danger. That has to be the best feeling ever – acceptance.

It’s not that the heroine has no family, she does but there’s significant tension and some bad juju in the past. So much so that I was ready to write them off as completely unlikable. Ms. Foster had a different goal in mind and I reluctantly concede that she made the right choice. I still think they need an attitude adjustment and they don’t deserve the wonderfulness that is Maxi, and that’s all I’ll say.

The good stuff is when Maxi and Miles get together in the carnal way. Ooh la la, was that spicy! They are so good together and I think they fell in love more and more every time they fell into each other’s arms. In the beginning, the words were hard for either one to say, but they showed it with their actions and how they treated each other. I liked that too.

The villain was hard to figure out until one of the internal dialogue scenes. The book is mostly told in third person for both the hero and heroine, but I was able to peek into the villain’s thought process from time to time. It was one sentence that made me shift from one possible culprit to another. I was right! But the reasoning and the motive behind it was actually kind of sad.

Close Contact is awesome. I had so much fun. It was a great weekend read and I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan but haven’t read it yet, romantic suspense lovers, and even first time readers because it’s a solid standalone read. Anyone who hasn’t read a Lori Foster book is missing out on some great writing and awesome heroes and heroines. This author does romance right.
