Finally! All of the stories under one cover. Nap Lapkin, America’s top agent, respected and feared by every agency in Washington, is both a lover and fighter and so much more. And less. But mostly more. There can be no argument that this is the funniest book ever written. No argument whatsoever.

The narrator in this book had a wonderful sense of humor. One of the coolest things about it was that they appeared to be aware of the genre they were working with and made many sly references to what an audience expects from a mystery. I giggled my way through these references as I waited to find out what would happen to the characters next.

There were times when I found it tricky to follow the plot because of how many times it slowed down to explain something that was loosely related to what the characters were currently experiencing. While these asides were often pretty funny as I mentioned above, there were so many of them that it was hard to stay focused on the main point of the storyline.

One of the things the narrator did a very good job of was subverting the audience’s expectations. There are certain tropes in the mystery genre that most people who are familiar with it will expect to see. It was amusing to take note of the narrator’s creative twists on these tropes, especially when it came to the audience’s expectations of what a government agent should be like. While this was firmly rooted in the suspense genre, the author also wasn’t afraid to borrow liberally from many other genres in order to make things fit together. The combination of that alongside the reinvention of tropes made this a memorable read for sure.

Tales of Adventure with Nap Lapkin should be read by anyone who enjoys a tongue-in-cheek approach to the mystery genre.

A twisted mystery that will leave you scratching your head.

However, Callie’s presence stirs up a whole lot of emotions and memories from the townspeople, some good, some not so good. But with every step, she learns more about the town and its people.

I loved how descriptive this book was because even though it took some time for me to get into the story, it just felt realistic. This is the author’s first book and it was so good. The mystery and suspense along with a bit of romance meshed so well for me. Ms. Mathews kept the mystery there right up until the end–even with the twists and turns. The characterizations were good and realistic. They had a depth to them that I rarely see and get to read. This story had not just a mystery but showed the closeness of family and friends, as well as not so good or close friends.

I found that the romance was sweet and not the main focus. Even though the romance and chemistry was slow to start, by the time I read half the book, I was rooting for them. I can see their relationship develop from strangers to becoming the most important people for each other.

The climax was a climax to remember. Great for readers who want a mystery as well as that family and friends feel.

Charm McCall can solve a small-town murder, but can she figure out how to stop a man-stealing interloper?

Between catering for the world’s hungriest film crew, trying to solve the murder of the unit accountant who hired her and dealing with her new magical gifts, Charm’s a tad busy. But too bad, because she’s soon facing off against a bigger threat when more people become ill with suspected poisoning—and her own sister’s in the crosshairs. Charm’s left wondering if even Agatha Christie could have seen this one coming.

But with so much working against them—including the whole town being dead set against them consummating their relationship—do Charm and Ace stand a chance?

Charm, a witch, and a triplet, is back, in her cozy little town and faced with a murder again. A movie is being filmed here, and her sister is staring in it. Familiar characters from book one are here, but if readers hadn’t seen that book, it’s okay. This second in a series is a standalone.

Charm is a good name for the protagonist, as it suits her well. Her love interest is a strong character who adds conflict in his own way. The supporting characters are drawn well enough to add to the plot, and there are plenty of twists and turns to make this an engaging story.

It’s not a high-tension tale, but the little details keep a reader immersed in this world. As we learn more about the crime, we also discover more about Charm. These details add depth to her.

Another antagonist—not the murderer—adds another touch of tension and interest to the story. What will happen with this one, who happens to want what Charm has? The secondary plot is not really connected to the primary plot, but it paints details and adds to the understanding of characters.

This is a cute little story and a great continuation of Charm’s escapades. Readers of cozy mysteries who like unconventional characters could really enjoy this one. If there is a third in this series, I would definitely like to read it.

Dylan Roth is back home, and not by his choosing. After a nasty divorce, he wants to find his footing and his place in the world. He joins his dad and brother in the family construction business and is assigned to the renovation of the old Mercier house, which is being filmed for the TV show Dream Homes, Unlimited. The last thing Dylan wants is to fall for Scarlett “Letty” Mercier, but an undeniable attraction is making it hard for him to say no to the redheaded beauty. When he learns the Roths’ and the Merciers’ pasts are entwined, he starts digging, and family history can no longer stay buried. Dylan and Letty are bound by a haunting secret that threatens to tear them apart unless they can break the ties of the past.

The past will not be ignored.

When Scarlett hires the Roth construction company to renovate the old Mercier house, Dylan is confused by her prickly attitude. Later he learns the Roth and Mercier families have complicated pasts. After reading a brief account of the source of animosity between the families, I knew there had to be more to the story. The explanation seemed flimsy to me, and I couldn’t believe an entire town had accepted such a weak explanation. However, my curiosity was piqued, and I had to know the whole story. As work on the house begins, both families seem willing to put the past aside. Unfortunately, construction on the house has disturbed something sinister. Will Dylan and Scarlett solve the mystery before history repeats itself?

Dylan and Scarlet have an almost immediate physical attraction to each other. Their first meeting is definitely prickly, but they warm to each other quickly. I must admit their relationship gets serious a bit too fast for my taste. Even Dylan and Scarlett admit they care about each other more than they should at such an early stage in their relationship and aren’t sure why. Is it simply fate, the connection to the past, or something else? Whatever the reason, Dylan and Scarlett have good chemistry and are a good couple.

What really kept me turning pages was the mystery of the past! I desperately wanted to know the true story of Dylan Roth (Dylan’s ancestor with the same name) and Jules and Marianne Mercier. I loved how Ms. Sweeney gradually revealed bits and pieces of the unnerving tale through old journal entries. The paranormal happenings at the Mercier house were spooky and gave me chills as I read!

I truly enjoyed reading Bound by Love. I recommend this romance to anyone who enjoys a good suspense with a dash of paranormal.

Telepathic petsitter Jordan Vaughn wishes she could forget her checkered past. Despite her genuine efforts to make amends, she falls short every time. When she meets the guy of her dreams, she’s sure that her bad-luck streak is over.

A head injury erased Harry Hill’s memory. Now, four years later, he’s built a new life in Nocturne Falls, complete with a gorgeous girlfriend.

Everything is falling into place—until someone tries to kill him. But will the past he can’t remember jeopardize his future with Jordan?

We get to meet a young man who wakes up in the forest with no memories and was beaten and bruised. The only things that provide any idea to his identity is a cat and a soaking piece of paper. He can’t make out what it says but a few letters, so he decides to call himself Harry. He follows the cat to a road and catches a ride to a small town called Nocturne Falls.

Jordan Vaughn lives in Nocturne Falls with her twin sister Mallory and her sister’s fiancée Cyrus and trying to make ends meet. She owns her own pet sitting business that is struggling and wants to get out of her sister’s place as she feels like a burden. Luckily, she gets a last-minute cat sitting job that allows her to stay at the Tucker household.

What she doesn’t know is that her life is going to become much more interesting and difficult.

She meets Harry in an unexpected way as he catches her from falling as she tries to enter the house using the trellis to get up the second floor since the key was missing. He takes it upon himself to be her protector since he had already had to save her.

The characters are well developed and I enjoyed the quirks in Jordon’s personality. You can’t help but feel sorry for her as she tries her best to help her sister but something always goes wrong. For example, Jordan was trying to make breakfast for her sister and fiancé’s 1-year anniversary but ended up burning the bacon, causing a fire in the oven and partially ruining the kitchen. To try to apologize for that she had bought a flower arrangement but her sister was allergic to it.

The plot was fun and different. Nocturne Falls is a well created and unique town. I’ve not read many books where there is a place for all the supernatural and unique beings to live without being censured. The best part is that the normal humans think it’s just an odd town that is obsessed with Halloween. Jordan fits in well as she has a gift to talk to animals telepathically.

The characters are well developed with each one having their own issues to work through but they help each other. Harry is able to allow Jordan to finally slide out of her older sister’s shadow and become her own self. She forces him to embrace who he could become. He draws upon her strength to finally decide that it was time to figure out who he really is.

The mystery really takes off when Jordan talks to Harry’s cat, Kitty. She finds out important information about the abduction. Watching their interactions as they piece clues together to figure out Harry’s past is a delight. I enjoyed how Harry reacts to finding about her gift. Their journey takes them in an unexpected direction, Catspaw Florida.

Watching them piece together small pieces to find the larger ones made the mystery a lot of fun. What I thought could be changed is how fast the mystery was actually solved. There was a lot of buildup but then the culprits were caught and the rest of their lives are pieced together quickly.

I would love to read more books in this universe and plan on rereading this novel. I adore animals and getting to hear what they have to say was fun. Both characters grew into themselves and, through their relationship, the reader learns that after persevering through the struggles of life, the end is more than worth it.

The character development was handled nicely. Otis felt like a real person to me. Both his flaws and his strengths were realistically described. There were times when his choices irritated me just like they would have if he were a friend or relative. I loved the fact that he was given so much leeway in the storyline to make mistakes. That’s an important part of being human, and it endeared me to this character very quickly.

It would have been nice to see more attention paid to the fantasy elements of the plot. Otis achieved amazing results with his patients because of something he had access to that no one else did. While the audience was told a little bit about where this power of his came from, I sure would have appreciated more information about why it existed and how it worked. Giving it as much attention as the main mystery plot wouldn’t be necessary, but explaining a few more things about it would have bumped my rating up by at least another star.

There was some great foreshadowing in this story. I had a good time picking it out in the beginning and seeing if my predictions about how it would come to pass matched what really happened. Luckily, I had plenty of opportunities to do just that. It made me want to read more from this author in the future!

They journey into the cold, misty mountains to track the animal–but discover something even more deadly in Tracking Game, the fifth installment in Margaret Mizushima’s Timber Creek K-9 mysteries.

Tracking Game is a book in a series titled “A Timber Creek K-9 Mystery”. I can’t find that these books are numbered but I can tell you that this one can easily be read as a stand-alone. It’s difficult for me to not like any book that has dogs, veterinarians, and cops in it, but this one was also a good story. It had a good flow and it was one of those books where you look up and realize you’ve read half of it in a sitting. An easy to read page turner.

There is more crime detection here than there is anything I would call a thriller or action. I think that’s why I enjoyed it. There was plenty of interaction between the characters and their dogs, there was interaction between the vet and the cop (hint, hint). You know how we pet owners now and then wonder what our pet might be thinking? There’s even a couple of cute places in here where you get to find that out what Bridget, K-9 Cop, tries to tell you. A really good read in every way.

Charm’s handsome new friend, Ace, a lawman, is on the case, but the townsfolk are probably more likely to talk to her. Besides, the victim was last seen at her café. Charm and Ace are an unlikely couple, but the chemistry is there. However, they clash as each tries to solve the murder.

Gotta love being kept on your toes til the end!

This is book one in the Texas Heroes series, I have already read book two and I don’t think reading out of order made any difference, except having spoilers from book one in book two.

I really enjoyed the way the tale tangled itself around Danny and Jake, the way I was kept on my toes with the whodunnit. I didn’t actually put the pieces together fast enough and all was revealed before I did! Loved that! The revenge that is Jake’s driving force isn’t fully laid out immediately in the book, but the blurb gives it away. I liked that very quickly it took a step back behind Danny’s safety.

I’m not giving anything away by mentioning Danny’s abusive father, it’s in the blurb, but that man is a nasty piece of work!

I didn’t think it was as explicit as book two, and it’s not really needed but the level of violence is much higher and quite graphic in places. It is needed, I think, to get the point across.

Both men have a say, in the third person, and both voices is clear and distinctive, showing their very different upbringings.

I like the way Ms Anastasi spins her tales, be one to watch I think. I found some M/F books this author writes too, and might try them!  4 good, solid stars.
