That said, she has difficulty allowing people to help her, which is understandable considering her past. However, if she trusted those trying to help her a little more, things might be a little less stressful for her. All in all, I was impressed with the lengths she went to in order to keep her past secret and her family secure.

Detective John Serrano I liked from the very beginning. It might have been his obsession with the Lord of the Rings series that did it, but there was something very homey about him. He became even more engaging as his own history came out little by little. His partner, Leslie Tally, was an interesting character as well, but I don’t feel like I got to know her as well as I did John. I do hope that we get more of her backstory in the next book, I’d love to know more about her wife and kids. They work well together though, despite being such polar opposites. These two are the kind of detectives that make me want to read police procedurals, honestly, and I would have enjoyed this just as much if it was focused on them and not Rachel.

From the very first pages, Hide Away grabbed my attention and held it. Chock full of intense, crazy action, I was never bored and eager to get to the next page. It seemed like every time I had it somewhat figured out, some new bit of information was added that changed my whole perspective. My only complaint was that it took so long to get to the meat of Rachel’s backstory. Although necessary, to a point, I was anxious to find out what happened to make her take such drastic steps. I’m excited to see what the next installment in this series brings us.

Shona Williams returned to Ironash for a number of reasons, but a quieter pace of life – and far fewer homicides to investigate – were two of the major draws to smaller town living. I frequently enjoy British crime stories, particularly those set in the smaller towns where everyone knows everyone. I also really liked how most of the various character’s actions weren’t just straight-forward. I thought the plotting was really strong – layered and slotting together like a jigsaw with many little pieces forming a larger whole.

This story was a delight, not only because I managed to find an excellent, character-driven crime-mystery story, but also because a number of aspects to the story were fresh and unique to me. The “who” aspect to the mystery was shown very early on, but with multiple layers and complexities behind the “why” I found myself deeply involved in the story and eagerly turning the pages. I’ve never read a story with this particular pathology and twists to the plot and I found the story as a whole both refreshingly different and yet still comfortable enough that it was like a pair of well-worn jeans. Exciting and yet still familiar.

I thought the characters were very well drawn. Shona and Earle in particular were revealed to me as the reader at a good pace, slow enough I could savour and enjoy learning about them both, but quickly enough the story didn’t drag. There were an excellent cast of strong secondary characters, many of whom were important in helping to make the small town of Ironash feel both realistic and relatable to me. I also absolutely loved the almost timeless feel of the story too. While clearly modern, I had a strong sense throughout the whole story that if a few aspects of modern technology were removed from being referenced, this could easily have been an Agatha Christie-esque story. I loved the reminder that despite the keen edge of technology and progress, at heart small towns – and people, in particular – remain largely the same as they always have. I adored this reminder and found it added to my enjoyment of the story greatly.

With many layers and aspects to the plot, and a number of them being completely unique and fresh to me, at least, this was a wonderful story and one I thoroughly enjoyed. I loved this exciting new mystery and am thrilled to find two more follow on books will be released in the coming month. Readers who love a good British crime/mystery story should definitely check this out.

Colton on the Run is my first introduction to the Coltons of Roaring Springs series. Each book is written a different author but revolve around the same close knit family. It was interesting to get glimpses of the family as Skye’s memory slowly returned. Speaking of her memories returning, I liked how the author let that play out. It was realistic but she didn’t let it slow the pace of the story.

In true Harlequin fashion, Leo and Skye both feel an immediate connection. Not so much love at first site or even lust. Just electric and palpable. I could tell right away that chemistry wasn’t going to be a problem for these two.

PTSD that can arise from different forms of trauma is a theme in this story for both Skye and in regards to Leo’s deceased father. I thought the author handled the subject very well. Leo is acutely aware of how truly traumatized Skye is even if he doesn’t know the details. He’s gentle and encouraging to her and that won so many points with this reader.

The way Ms. Stewart introduces the bad guy creates a true feeling of evil and of a crazy psycho for sure. She let’s us inside his head, see his thoughts and plans, feel his excitement building at the thought of hurting someone again. The book opens with Skye in trouble and there’s no doubt that more of the same is on its way.

My first impression of the author’s writing was how vivid and ‘in the moment’ it put this reader. I like that and honestly look for it writers that I might want to read again in the future. This story has a steady pace and the right mix of action, mystery and romance. There’s obviously more to come from Roaring Springs since the serial killer has yet to caught. Plenty of reason for a return visit with the next installment.

This was a sweet romance with a bit of suspense/mystery. I was smitten from beginning to end as I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. The plot was unpredictable which added to my enjoyment.

I don’t know if this book is part of a series or not but I can see how it could be. The characters are well developed and easy to relate to. I feel like the next book could be about Mason who at the end of the story, his girlfriend didn’t want to see him anymore. Or perhaps it could be about Zach who is always solo.

I thought this was an excellent book to read on my camping trip. For other readers, I definitely recommend Rock House Grill for anytime, anyplace.  Just make sure to set aside enough time to enjoy this quality read.

And, I’m glad I found this one, even if I am coming late to the party, being this is the sixth book in the series. Have not fear, though, it can easily be read as a standalone, though I do have to admit I have already bought the earlier five books just so I can see more of Ashmole.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The mysteries involved were top-notch, the characters — ditto. I did not want to put this book down once I started it. I’ve not read a lot of books set in Norfolk, so I was very glad to get a glimpse of another English city.

Foxe seems like the kind of man it would be a lot of fun to have as a friend, as long as you realize he is what he is. He’s just thirty (which leads me to my only complaint…if the man on the front cover is supposed to be Ashmole, he’s sorely miscast….perhaps he’s one of the murder victims instead) and has a distinct joie de vivre which I imagine would be irresistible. And, it sounds like it is… especially for the ladies. He’s the type of man that has to be taken how he is (and not very seriously). I especially enjoyed the dilemma the author left him in at the end of the book, and it will be interesting to see how he gets out of it (this is not by any means a cliff-hanger; the mysteries are solved.)

I’m hoping I will soon have time to sit down and Ashmore again and catch up on what he’s done before this volume. Highly recommended!

Rich isn’t so sure about the rugged, older Diego—even if he’s always thought the guy was hot. But there’s an immediate heat and connection between them that takes him by surprise. A delicious addition to the series!  It’s not necessary to have read the other 5 books, but they are all great reads.

Rich is not happy with his home life so spends most of his time at the coffee shop or the shelter where he volunteers. Diego watches Rich in the coffee shop. Now, when I read the blurb I thought that kinda creepy, but it’s delivered in such a non-creepy way, I loved it! Rich KNOWS Diego is watching him, because he watches Diego too.

Both guys have a say, in the third person POV. Both Rich and Diego know they want something more than a quick fling, they want to BUILD something. It’s great reading, the way they both sort of dance around their feelings but know what they want!  Their chemistry is hot and heavy right from that first non-date, and it was great fun watching Diego introduce some new pleasures to Rich.

The danger to Rich is front and centre throughout the whole book, and it’s really well told, the way that sort of snowballs around him.

Most of the previous characters pop up in one way or another, or are talked about, and it was particularly wonderful to catch up with Lonnie and Parker (book 2, Copping and Attitude) I think they were my favourite couple!

It is a really great book, just a little on the sweet side for me, which was why I gave it four (good, solid) stars and not five. Still, I read it in one sitting on a quite afternoon at work, so recommend.

American Kingfish Association is a crime thriller set around tournament fishing and missing boats. Even though this is fiction, as with any good fishing story, there underlines some truth. As fishing stories go, AKA could be about that one that got away or was the one captured in the net.

Jarratt Summer is an avid Kingfish tournament fisherman. He has combined his love of fishing and the sea with his work at American Marine Insurance. Jarratt is on a personal quest to become a winner on Florida’s First Coast king fishing circuit. His goal is to earn a place at the Kingfish Super Bowl Tournament being held in St Lucie, FL. With the unexpected death of a co-worker, Jarratt is promoted to SIU/ Special Investigative Unit. Once here, Jarratt uncovers schemes for filing false insurance claims along with other schemes to bilk money from his employer. Jarratt attempts to put the pieces of the scheme together while avoiding being entrapped or worse killed.

I predict the author, Charles Darner, is going to be on the number one New York Times Bestsellers list. It’s only a matter of time before he gets the recognition. American Kingfish Association is his first book but no one would ever guess that. The writing style is remarkable. I can say this because I haven’t the first clue about fishing of any kind. I was riveted to my seat when the “reel’s clicker went off”. I didn’t know what a reel clicker was but I could feel the adrenaline running through the crew as they went through the process of bringing the fish in. I was just as disappointed as the characters when the line broke. It takes talent to write a book that consistently made me feel like I was with the characters every step of the way. It’s a greater talent when I didn’t feel lost or bored with all the details since I hadn’t a clue about the subject matter. From the description I was able to visualize the reel clicker as part of the rising rod that they crank to bring the fish in.

It is really important to make clear that this is not a “how to fish” book. This is an action/thriller, “hold on to your seat because you have no idea what is going to happen next”, type of novel. My son is the one that encouraged me to give this book a try. As a rule, it’s not the type of book I’d typically choose to read but I honestly couldn’t put it down! I read it in two days because it was that good. My preferred genre is romance, so I am pleased to tell you that there was a small romance with the leading character, Jarratt Summer, tucked in with the action.

Jarratt, Charlie, Adam and Sarah are the main characters. Together they make up the crew that wants to win the Kingfish tournament. There’s quite a varied cast of characters threaded throughout the plot, all of whom are well-developed. Their characterization is effective enough to make me believe the bad guys are truly bad. As for the good guys, I am not able to pick a favorite but I’d lean heavily on choosing Charlie as my favorite. He’s the kind of friend I’d want to have in my life.

The synopsis shared some exciting elements that might be intriguing to a reader but it’s important that I highlight that I found this novel unique. First, my interest was piqued by, “Jarratt attempts to put the pieces of the scheme together while avoiding being entrapped or worse, killed”. I was pleasantly surprised by the author’s vivid imagination and how he engaged my full attention. Second, he demonstrated a skill with words that was creative, making this novel a highly entertaining read and hard for me to put down. It’s a challenge to interest and involve a reader who knows next to nothing about the subject matter, yet delivers a solid and well-rounded story that reels in a reader like it did me. Pun intended *G*.

The plot flowed smoothly from beginning to end carrying me along on an anxiety provoking ride. There were moments I felt scared, happy or disappointed, and there was one time I even laughed. I was mostly invested in figuring how in the heck Jarratt was going to get out of the mess he got himself into.

The most exciting thing about this book isn’t that all the plot threads were tied up the way I like it, which is super important to me, but that the story cleverly hints there might be a sequel! I am very excited about that because I loved this book. In fact, I’m going to buy one for my dad for Father’s day and for my nephew for his birthday. They both love to fish and would enjoy all the action since they both love thriller/action/adventure movies. In fact, I won’t be surprised if this becomes a blockbuster someday.

I enthusiastically recommend reading American Kingfish Association! It definitely “hooked” me.

Bryce’s character development was incredibly well done. He’d been through a terrible experience that caused both emotional and physical trauma. His recovery was a slow and difficult one, especially when it came to how he responded to his memories of that awful day and the reactions of other people to his many scars. I had so much compassion for this character even when he was acting out. Many teens would behave the same way in his shoes, especially if they lived in the early 1980s when fewer people understood how trauma works and when medical treatments for this sort of injury weren’t as advanced as they would be today.

The mystery subplot could have used more development. I had some trouble following its developments, especially in the beginning when Bryce knew nothing about what was going on. There simply weren’t enough hints to show what was happening or why it was happening. A few more of them would have been very helpful.

One of the most interesting parts of this book for me was Bryce’s troubled relationship with his mom and stepdad. Their conflicts were incredibly complex and rooted in disagreements that had been going on for a very long time. Not only was this where the main character found a lot of opportunities for personal growth, it was also where some of the best plot developments came from. While I was satisfied with the ending, I sure would like to see a sequel that explores what their relationships were like hen Bryce was a few decades older. There was so much more room here for future storylines.

I’d recommend Anybody Want to Play War? to anyone who is interested in the 1980s or realistic depictions of mental illness after a traumatic event.
