Another awesome visit to the mountains of W Virginia. I enjoyed how the writing takes me right into the center of the community. I can feel the summer heat, smell the mountain air, taste down home cooking. That’s good writing.

I’d like to say the mystery is starting to unravel but really, it’s just getting started. Details come out. I have my own suspicion but I’ll wait to see how it plays out. I love the romance of these books but I’m a sucker for a good ‘who-done-it’.

Next in line to be bit by the love bug is Cassidy and Bowie and it’s about time these two make a move. The first two books really build the tension likes it’s foreplay. I can’t wait to see what sets off the spark that finally ignites them. Love this series!

Bootleg Springs, with it’s pride in moonshine and unsolved mystery, was just waiting to be discovered. With six books already available to absorb, I’m so very glad I did.

Scarlett is just the best. She’s real and unapologetic in her enthusiasm for finding the fun in life. It’s clear early on that Devlin needed Scarlett to mess up his all too planned out existence. And boy does she ever!

I loved their chemistry! It’s off the pages hot and sweet at the same time. There’s so much going on in this first book in the series. The authors did a fantastic job of building the unsolved mystery with clues that not only kept me wondering about what would be revealed in this book but clearly what will be sprinkled in throughout the rest of the series.

Something the authors did that I don’t see often was in the epilogue. The give the reader a glance at the future that includes the completed stories of the future couples that are featured in the rest of the series. Not exactly spoilers because, somebody, not me, might decide not to read the next books. Just a feeling of completion for not only Devlin and Scarlett but that the town as well as the rest of her family will survive what is revealed.

I’ll be returning to Bootleg Springs real soon. Readers who love a good rom-com and a mystery to boot, should join me. Be warned that you might not want to leave. The story and the people will draw you in and make you feel like family.

Brandon and his family visited so many well-known parts of China during their trip. It was fun to see what he and his cousins thought of all of the famous places they saw as well as the delicious meals they got to eat. There was a nice balance between learning a little bit of Chinese history, visiting memorable spots, and eating tasty food. It sounded like the sort of vacation any kid or adult would appreciate!

I would have liked to see more foreshadowing included in this book. There were a couple of plot twists that came up out of nowhere in my opinion. Since they were connected to the mystery subplot, it would have been helpful to have a hint or two about what was happening there so that I could have had better luck figuring out if my guesses about how everything would turn out were actually close to the truth.

With that being said, I did enjoy the mystery elements of the plot quite a bit. Was it really a small panda that Brandon saw at the beginning of his trip? I smiled at his answer to that question and waited patiently to see if his guess was the correct one. This was a nice way to add a little friendly tension to a vacation that was otherwise going exactly the way everyone thought it would.

I’d recommend Brandon Goes to Beijing to anyone who enjoys traveling or learning about other countries.

Consequently, Zel never learned much about magic or how truly powerful her own unique abilities are. When the magical community of Los Angeles fails to locate Sonny or who took him, Zel finds herself with an unlikely ally.

Henry is a man with a past as troubled as Zel’s. When Zel walks into Archetype Place looking for help, Henry finds himself inexplicably drawn to her. After a tragic loss, Henry closed himself off from everyone and everything. He goes through the motions of life without truly living. When I got a good look at the way Henry lived, it broke my heart. When Henry meets Zel, he finds himself caring about another person for the first time in decades. Unfortunately, neither of them are in an ideal position to embark on a romance. Still, I saw an undeniable spark of attraction between them. As I read, I kept my fingers crossed in hopes they would find their way to a happy ending.

As Zel and Henry investigate Sonny’s disappearance, I enjoyed watching Zel gain confidence in her abilities. Henry offers guidance and advice in magical matters but really allows Zel to flex her magical muscles as well. They make a great team. I will say the conclusion of the mystery felt a bit abrupt. So much happens to Henry and Zel in such a short amount of time, and there was a lot of build up before Henry and Zel really got moving on their investigation. It seemed as if they’d barely started when suddenly it was all over! Despite this issue, the conclusion made sense and was satisfying.

I’m glad I had the opportunity to read Hidden Charm. Henry and Zel’s story is compelling and the mystery of Sonny’s disappearance is intriguing. I recommend Hidden Charm to anyone who enjoys fairytales with a twist.

What endeared me to him even more, though, was how his weaknesses also affected his investigation. For example, he could be stubborn at times and occasionally had trouble recognizing when he should ask others for help. While I can’t go into any more detail than that without wandering into spoiler territory, I was pleased with how much effort the author put into creating such a three-dimensional and sympathetic protagonist. He was a wonderful character to get to know.

Not only was Conrad well-developed, the supporting characters were as well. I especially enjoyed meeting his elderly neighbor, Ann. She was a warm, kind person who was far more complex than she might have appeared to be at first glance. I enjoyed getting to know her on a deeper level as her friendship with Conrad grew and she began revealing things to him about her past that she didn’t seem to want to discuss with most other folks.

The mystery of what happened to the little ghost boy was nicely written. There were exactly enough clues about his life and death for me to have something to think about as I kept reading. I also liked the way the storyline gradually introduced new details about this child that made me look at the previous hints about him in an entirely new light.

Exploring the small town setting was also a treat. Figuring out the politics of living in this sort of place can be tricky, especially for city folks like the main character who have no idea just how interconnected everyone is when most folks are born, live, and die in the same community. The author captured the both the upsides and the downsides of living in an insulated place like this perfectly.

Garden of the Lost was hauntingly beautiful. I highly recommend it!

Not only did she create quite a story but within this mystery she created a little humor, a little whimsy and yet kept the story tight and tense when it should be. This story is described as possibly a romantic mystery, but I disagree. I am not a romance fan and there might have been a little sweet romance here, but the emphasis was on the mystery and the suspense. That’s why I enjoyed it so much. A lot of story in a very short number of pages. Just a great read.

Above all else, though, I have to say… go buy the book! To quote NIKE “Just do it”. There isn’t a book of the past 153 that I’ve read that compares to the quality and quantity of research presented in a realistic and entertaining manner that I found in The Turkish Affair. The details provided are eloquently implemented with such polish that one can’t help but feel like they are present with the characters. With that said I don’t have a desire to go on a Turkish tour. I love my modern-day comforts too much.

In regards to the characters, they are splendid. I had to read slowly and pay attention to follow the suspense/mystery. I was riveted to my seat from beginning to end, trying to guess who was stealing the artifacts because I was suspicious of everyone. The best thing – I was surprised at the end. I didn’t find the plot predictable at all because I was too busy trying to figure out why certain characters were hostile to others and who could be trusted.

The romance between Renaud and Anne was complicated by outside forces but they couldn’t resist each other. There are many plot threads woven in synchrony between who is corrupt, who is telling the truth and the desire for Renaud and Anne to be together. I was thoroughly engaged in trying to comprehend and anticipate what would happen next.

On a side note, I woke up and declared this day was going to be a “do nothing” day so that I could sit on the couch and read. My husband woke up and declared that this would be the day we’d go mattress shopping because he was not going to sleep another night on our deplorable mattress. I was rather annoyed. Thankfully the matter was settled rather quickly and I was back on the couch in a matter of a couple of hours. I spent the entire time mattress shopping reviewing in my head what I had read so far. It’s that kind of book, nearly impossible to put down and impossible to get out of my head.

Now that I’ve finished reading it, I’m still thinking about certain scenes. I’m very particular in my requirements that an author ties up those loose threads, so accepting it as written is a rare event. I don’t think it would have been realistic for the author to wrap up the ending with a neat and tidy bow. Not when the story takes place in another country where the guilty would need to be extradited and especially when the author wants to keep the story genuine and authentic. Without giving any spoilers, I can what really matters most – Renaud and Anne did receive their happily ever after.

In conclusion, I will repeat myself. Go buy the book!.

Her success rate at catching people in insurance fraud has landed her a job that may just help bring closure to an early case in her career that never got justice. It also puts her in close contact with family who owns the Timberline Ski Lodge just out side of Silver Town, CO. More specifically, it puts her in close cover with one Blake Wolff.

Blake and his family moved to Colorado to be together and find connections by being part of the Silver Town wolf pack. He never expected the gray wolf who shows up looking to take down a couple of his lodge guests to be the mate his wolf longs for.

Their story is sweet. Blake will do whatever it takes to keep Nicole safe as she investigates the not-so-dead man and his cousin (who benefited from his death) staying on the fourth floor. The men are clever at cover their tracts and then there’s an additional surprise that I didn’t see coming.

The romance between Blake and Nicole heats up towards the end as does the action in the mystery she’s trying to solve. There’s never really any conflict between Blake and Nicole that has to be worked out so I felt a little let down, looking for growth, new discovery, a reason to cheer on their HEA.

They do have a beautiful future ahead of them, surrounded by family and a super supportive pack. I just didn’t feel a whole lot of chemistry between them that I look for in romance in general but especially paranormal. There’s a lot of telling in this book and it was very informative on the dangers of being caught in an avalanche. It was obvious Ms Spears did her homework there.

Still, the story in itself is complete. The bad guys are established early, her reason for being at the lodge is legit and the way she and Blake come together works. All in all, a good addition to the Silver Town saga of books with plenty of new characters to work in to new layers of the series.

I found this to be a romantic and interesting short story. Maddy and Garrett had known each other most of their lives, having grown up in a small town, but after Maddy a bad relationship she’d moved into the big city and moved on with her life. Her friendship with Garrett continued which helped make their relationship deepening from friends to lovers realistic and easier in the short length of the story. I feel readers looking for a quick romance story will find this satisfies – as a lot of the focus is on Maddy and Garrett and the progress of their relationship. Had the story been longer I absolutely would have wanted more depth and details of Garrett’s work as an FBI agent and the cases and difficulties he must deal with every day, but I can understand how if the author had done this here the romance side to the story would have been cut short and suffered.

The mystery plot was fast paced and I enjoyed the conflict and suspense it added to the story. I felt Maddy’s calmness in the initial phase of the tension was a little unrealistic given the situation she found herself in and the numerous ways things could have gone very bad very quickly, but again admit that the short length of the story didn’t lend itself to the giving Maddy the time to have a melt-down. I thought the resolution clicked into place a little too easily and I was surprised at how quickly Maddy and Garrett consummated their relationship after her ordeal, but overall the tenseness of the plot and the happiness of the romance growing between Maddy and Garrett had the story feeling balanced and interesting to me.

Throw logic out the door and disconnect your brain, sit back with a glass of wine and this can be one of those good, short stories where you just enjoy a bit of an escape from reality for a while. With a good plot and lovely romance there’s plenty to enjoy about this story.

There’s something lovely about reading about characters who’ve known each other for so many years that none of their flaws or strengths are ever a surprise. These two friends always knew exactly what to expect from each other even when one of them did something that may have appeared to be out of character at first glance. That was lovely.

It was difficult to understand Hillary at times. I assumed she’d be an intelligent and observant person based on the fact that she’d graduated from college and had been accepted into what sounded like a pretty demanding graduate school program. While I would have totally understood it if she’d occasionally missed clues about what was really going on in the boarding house she moved into, it seemed unlikely that she’d overlook or misunderstand all of them. I liked this character a lot otherwise, but the disconnect between her personal and professional life when it came to thinking things through logically played such a big role in the course of the plot that I sure would have liked to know why it happened.

I appreciated the fact that this book didn’t spend a lot of time focusing on what era it was set it. All but a few scenes could have just as easily been set in 1950 as in our era. In fact, some scenes felt much more historical than they did contemporary, especially when it came to what Hillary expected from living in a rooming house. This gave the storyline a timeless feeling that I enjoyed.

The romantic subplot would have benefited from more development. The characters involved in it knew virtually nothing about each other and spent little time together, so I was surprised by how quickly they fell for one another. I liked the idea of tying a romance into a mystery about a family that had tried so hard to cover their tracks decades ago, but there simply wasn’t enough substance here for me to determine if I wanted these two particular characters to end up together.

With that being said, I was pleased with the ending. This was the sort of mystery that gave readers plenty of hints about how it would turn out, so I was glad to see how the main character reacted when she finally realized how all of the clues fit together. The short, snappy resolution made a great deal of sense for something that had already explained so much stuff already.

The House on Maple Street should be read by anyone who likes paranormal mysteries.
