I was especially fond of Boy, the werewolf bartender, Chef, the skinny young man who can cook the most sumptuous meals, and Myron the Master Builder. The story moves from episode to episode in the life of a bar and grille. Each episode is loosely connected to the main story line and we learn how Crochet deals with a Rainmaker and then plays host to a gathering of witches. The plot covers a period of over six years in Crochet’s life as the host of his bar and grille, and there is much humor and adventure to be had by all.

The setting for this novel is fully developed and I really felt as if I were on this weird and very interesting planet. Not only is the bar and grille described in rich detail, including all the information about the renovating of the three hundred year old building, but the other parts of the planet come alive as well. The reader learns about ghouls and vampires, witches and banshees, and many other delightful creatures.
Lovers of light-hearted fantasy are sure to enjoy learning all about life on Hepzibah as seen through the eyes of Abel Crochet, Host of Warlock’s Bar and Grille.

The secondary characters dragged me through a wide range of emotions. Raven’s adoptive family is as secretive as they are dysfunctional. The unhealthy relationships among them were sometimes expressed in incredibly subtle ways that made the plot feel even more realistic as it unfolded.

It would have been helpful to have more information about who Raven is as an individual. Her curiosity about and raw grief over not having any information about her origins adds some depth to her character, but I had trouble figuring out what kind of person she was outside of these burning questions. The brief glimpses of her growing identity as a person of color were fascinating and could have easily been expanded to illuminate more of her personality.

Some of the most absorbing sections of this book chronicle how the upper middle class white families in Raven’s town thought of other races during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The seemingly slow progression of the types of words they used to discuss black people as well as how much social contact was considered acceptable made me marvel at how much can change in a generation. From one year to the next very little seems to change, yet when viewed with a wider lens everything shifts much more quickly than I ever would have guessed had my knowledge of this era ended in 1950.

The romantic elements never quite seemed to fit in with the rest of the plot. I had trouble understanding why the characters involved in it were attracted to one another and would have liked to have more information about what they saw in one another before they fell in love. Both characters were intriguing as individuals, I was just never able to see the spark between them.

There were a few things that didn’t make any sense to me in the beginning of this story. At first I wondered if I’d misread the possible interpretations of these scenes. Once Ms. Sayles began pulling everything together, though, I was impressed by how many clues she’d tucked into small snippets of conversation among other places.

The Adoption Conspiracy is a good choice for anyone in the mood for something dramatic and historical. The mystery is nearly as compelling as everything else that is going on in the mid 20th century for these characters!

The magical land of Carolna is richly described and I found it to be totally believable. In addition, the author has created unique and fully realized characters, whether they are dragons or kings, pirates or scullery maids. I was especially drawn not only to the dragons, but also to Tom and his wife Princess Amanda.

The action in this novel centers on a kidnapping. The kidnappers intended to snatch Gale, Amanda and Tom’s daughter, but instead they capture Brenda, Gale’s Maid-in-Waiting, a young girl with a lot of spunk.

This is the fifth novel in the Dragon Companion series but like the others in the series, it also works just fine as a stand-alone. Each book has its own distinct story, but there is a thread that runs through the entire series which is finally resolved in this final book. There are advantages to reading the entire series in order and there are also advantages to reading Dragon Winter on its own. I have read the entire series and it was wonderful to re-enter this world and share more adventures with my friends. That being said, the plot was a bit predictable. I knew what would inevitably happen, something that I probably wouldn’t have known if I hadn’t read the first four books. However, I am very glad I had, because I felt the full impact of the resolution of the common thread and while I knew what would happen, I had no idea how. The author’s creativity in the resolution provides a great deal of fun and excitement even when the outcome is known.

So fantasy lovers, especially dragon lovers, be sure to give this a try. The dragons are among the most wonderful that I have ever shared adventures with.

Retruance is joined by a brother, sister-in-law, nieces and nephews, and his father. Each dragon is unique and together they make an impressive show. In this novel, we also make the acquaintance of a lovely sea dragon who helps Retruance and his brother Furbetrance when a volcano becomes dangerous.

The plot is filled with action and it moves along at a great speed. There are mysteries to solve and dangers to avert. Lovers of dragon stories will definitely want to add this title, and indeed the entire series, to their reading lists.

The plot is fast-moving with action galore. There is a royal kidnapping and an invasion from the north. The Constable brothers, Retruance and Furbetrance, are aided by Hoarling, the Ice Dragon. Tom, Retruance’s companion, and Mandy, his wife, are in the thick of things, working diligently to foil their enemies.

The world that Callander has created is rich, rewarding, and totally believable. I would love to live in the land of Carolna, if I were as lucky as Tom to be transported there to become the companion of “a fifty-foot, green-and-gold, fire-breathing gentle Dragon named Returance Constable.” Tom saves the day in a variety of ways with his very practical ideas in a land which tends to do everything by magic. Tom is an anomaly in that he is a human in a land of elves, but he is valued and honored for his wisdom and assistance.

The story is intriguing, as well as exciting and fun. It is a real page turner with excellent pacing, lots of twists and turns in the action, and a very satisfactory ending which nonetheless leaves the door open for another book in the series.

Readers of dragon fantasies are sure to enjoy Dragon Rescue. And if you want to treat yourself to exploring the world of Carolna completely, then begin with Dragon Companion, also a great read.

Tom is the only non-magical person, the only human, in the story and he quickly demonstrates his practical aptitude for solving difficult situations without the use of magic, thus confounding the evil-doers who have warded themselves against magic. They have no defense against Tom.

I like the characters in Dragon Companion. They are fully developed and very real. It is easy to route for Tom, Retruance, Murdan, and others, and I really cared about what happens to them. I held my breathe during the kidnappings. I worried about the king’s unhappy pregnant wife. And I hoped above all else that the villains would be caught.

The pacing is excellent and I was totally caught up in each and every adventure. Readers of fantasy, especially readers who enjoy dragons, will certainly be captivated by this charming and exciting adventure.

I would have preferred to see more time spent developing the motive of the antagonist in this piece. The reasons that were provided were never quite satisfactory for this reader due to how they are described. The omission of certain facts made it difficult for me to determine if I was encountering plot holes or if there were other explanations for why the antagonist behaves in certain ways.

The pacing in this novel was also well done. It begins with a bang and refuses to let up until the last word is wrung out from the final paragraph. I was not expecting the mystery to be so integrated into the science fiction elements of this tale, but the ways in which these genres are seamlessly blended together make it difficult to stop reading.

All of Us Were Sophie is a genre-bending thriller that I wish I could experience again for the first time. I would particularly recommend it to long-term fans of science fiction or mysteries who are interested in trying out a new genre. This book is a good introduction to either one.

Anne Logston is very skilled at developing her characters and both Peri and Atheris, the Sarkond heretic she rescues, are real and alive. The two of them grow in many ways as they are forced to learn about each other as more than just traditional enemies. They have to work together, each needing the other, in order to stay alive. And each of them has secrets but in spite of those, they manage to develop a working relationship.

The setting is described richly and precisely so that when I was creeping along back alleys with Peri, I really felt as if I were right there, smelling the smells and feeling the “feeders” reaching for me. The pacing is excellent and the pages just flew by as I raced from one adventure to another. Peri and Atheris also come from very different cultures with totally different belief systems and they soon run into the question of whether or not they have to fulfill a certain destiny. I found the discussions around this to be extremely thought provoking.

Waterdance is the second in a series, but it stands alone just fine. I am glad that I read Firewalk first, because I do like to read a good series in order and this is an excellent series. But Peri wasn’t even born when the earlier novel took place and the plot and characters are totally new. Lovers of fantasy are sure to enjoy Waterdance and indeed, the entire series and I hope the next book comes out quickly.

This novel is Kayli’s story and I was very impressed with the way Anne Logston has created a rich and fully drawn character, one who develops and changes as the story progresses. Kayli is young and powerful, on her way to becoming an initiate in the order, showing an amazing talent even as a novice. I sensed her pride in her accomplishment and her great disappointment when just as she is to take her first fire-walk, she is stopped by the arrival of her father. As the novel progresses, Kayli develops in maturity and dignity. She handles the news of her impending marriage with as much calmness as her fiery nature will allow, realizing that even if things go smoothly, her path is nevertheless uncertain.

The plot is complex and full of suspense and surprises. The pacing is excellent, and this book is a real page-turner. The two nations of Bregond and Agrond are as different as any two nations could be, primarily because of the vast differences in their physical climates and geographies. Bregond is very dry whereas Agrond is lush and green. The physical differences are of course reflected in the cultures as well, so Kayli and her new husband, Randon, have their work cut out for them in order to bring a lasting peace to these nations, a peace that powerful forces are determined to destroy.

This is the first novel in the Firewalk series and I found it to be totally captivating. Readers of fantasy are sure to find a new favorite with Firewalk and I look forward to future novels in the series.

This is the fourth novel in the ‘Mancer series, but it works fine as a standalone novel as all the background information that a new reader would need is given clearly and immediately at the beginning. The plot is filled with many twists and turns as Myrn and Douglas each work on separate parts of a much larger problem. The action is fast-paced and the novel is a real page turner. But what I liked best about it is the depth of the author’s imagination in creating a multitude of fantastic and interesting characters in a world filled with wonder. I really felt as if I were in Samarca and the descriptions of the places within the novel are so richly drawn that the world feels completely real.

Likewise, the characters are unique and distinct. Myrn takes the lead in the adventures, demonstrating her enormous capabilities. She allows herself to be kidnapped and offered on the auction block at a slave market and then succeeds in engineering the sale so that it helps her with her mission. She does all this with a lot of skill as well as a healthy helping of humor, which makes for a delightful combination.

I highly recommend Aeromancer, and indeed this entire series, to fantasy lovers of all ages. It is a thrilling adventure with a great deal of imagination and humor.
