But at least the author doesn’t trash anyone while she’s writing about them. It’s like she’s telling me about her friends and her life. I guess that’s what I liked about this book the most. It feels real.

I have to admit I picked up this book because of the art in the middle. Yes, art. Debbie Harry showcases fan art in this book and it’s very cool to see how the fans interpreted her. Some are kid drawings and others are by adults. She’s a multifaceted person and this book shows it.
Once I poured through the art, I got down to reading. Debbie Harry is seen as one of the queens of punk and this book showcases that. She’s blunt and honest in her retellings of her life. This woman has been through a lot. She was adopted as a baby and always wondered about her parents. The story wasn’t pretty and rather depressing. At least she had a decent childhood. But still, she’s a rebel and seems like she always was. I liked how she managed to get herself through school, college and navigate the punk scene while being an independent and true to herself. She proves that you can do what you want and get what you want if you’re willing to do the work.

She talks about her relationships and her current state of affairs in plain and blunt terms that makes one feel like she’s talking to me. Like a conversation between friends. I liked it.

Then there’s his music.

In the grand scheme of things, he rather glosses over the music. It’s almost like it’s there, but it’s not the focus. I kind of liked that because he talks more about himself than the songs. But if you’re looking for his insights on his music, then this might not be the right book.

I loved how he described his feelings about David, his husband, and how he fell in love and opted to have kids. It’s sweet, complicated and worth the read. There are the kiss and tell moments, but this is more than that. It’s his honest recollection of his life–full of dents, holes, wrong turns and love.

If you want an autobiography that doesn’t come off preach and will keep your interest, then this is the book to try. Elton John fans, check it out!

Reading about her transition, the bullying, the fear, confusion…I wanted to hug her. I loved that Selenis and the rest of the family gave her the love and respect she deserved on this journey. The parts concerning her birth parents was particularly hard. I can’t imagine what she went through at the hands of her father.

This book has been described as an open letter between sisters or a dialogue between them. It is. This isn’t all from Selenis’s point of view. Yes, she tells of how she felt as Marizol transitioned, but it’s more about Marizol. Truly.

This book shows how one can accept themselves, how their family can accept them and how it’s okay to be authentic. You have to be yourself.

I’ve read other books by Caitlin Doughty and enjoyed them quite a bit. I realize that sounds strange since this book, like her others, is about death. Most people think it’s morbid or yucky to consider death. It’s even yuckier to think about what happens to us when we die. This book treats the subject head-on and it’s rather refreshing.

This book isn’t all death, doom and gloom. There is a bit of introspection, a lot of details about her life and work at the crematorium, plus people and death. The author discusses how some people simply accept the death of loved ones, others write the loved ones off and still more can’t quite let go. The stories of the bodies coming in are somewhat gross. There are moments that made me cry, too, like with the babies. But this isn’t the story of the babies or the bodies. It’s how the author grows and changes through her work at the crematorium. From her insistent desire not to be cremated and how she’ll handle the death of her loved ones, to acceptance of the course of life.

It’s an eye-opening book, filled with anecdotes, love, trials and facts about death. If you’re interested, scared, or think this sounds like a good book, give it a try. It’s well worth the read.

She definitely made me look at having children in a different way. I’ve never thought about saying some of the things she does in this book but that’s okay. It’s her book. It’s also a long letter (in chapter form) to her children. I liked how she told it how she saw it. I also loved the epilogue from her husband. It’s sweet, honest and touching. I should add, she talks about butts a lot. I mean, a lot! If you’re not interested in her affinity for butts, then you might want to turn away. If it doesn’t bother you, then no worries. Read away!

If you’re looking for a book that’s funny, heart-wrenching and will stick with you after the final page, then this might be the book for you.

Okay, that sounded a little odd. Right? A book spoke to me? First, the original title of the book is In Search of Cleo: How I Found My Pussy and Lost My Mind. I have to admit, I picked the book up because she called the cat her pussy. I knew the difference. But the risque title did grab my attention.

I know Gina Gershon from her acting work, but she can tell a story, too. This is a quick read, but it’s heavy. I felt for her. She lost her cat because of a crazy series of events and like most people who have animals, she didn’t give up until she found him. It read sometimes like a Hallmark movie, in that I wanted her to have her ending and she had determination. Other times, it read like a crazy dream – the fortune teller and seance lady was a bit out there.

But it grabbed me. I respect her determination to find Cleo. When you have that one animal that’s yours, that not only belongs to you, but has claimed you, you get it. I got it. I’ve had a couple of those animals and I hope to have more. They pick you, the same way Cleo picked Gina.

If you want a book that’s got a few laughs, a few tears and will show the depth of love one person can have for a cat, then this might be the book for you.
