Researching for the Books

My goal in writing the Loving a Warrior series was to focus on topics relevant to the military. I’ve never served, but both my dad and my husband were career military, so I’ve spent my entire life around it. My husband also wasn’t a Navy SEAL, but during the course of his job he worked closely with them and is still friends with some today.

Undertaking the research for these books was a labor of love, but at the same time pretty daunting. While there have been a lot written about Navy SEALs in recent years, they’re usually about specific missions and what led up to them. It’s hard to find information on what daily life is really like, for both the SEAL and those who love them.

Enter podcasts!

Podcasts have been around for awhile, but they’d never really been on my radar as a research source. I stumbled across one by accident, a podcast put on by a former Navy SEAL, and I was immediately hooked! He talks about the realities of life in special operations and what it’s like for their families. I was able to pick up some of the lingo, and get a peek inside their heads, a real understanding of the type of person who makes it through such brutal training and goes on to serve. I think listening to these podcasts has helped me add a depth to my stories that might not otherwise have been possible.

Writing TRUSTING A WARRIOR wasn’t easy. It deals with a difficult topic—veteran suicide—but at its heart it’s how two very different people find common ground and eventually fall in love. Lani doesn’t want to trust a special operations guy again, and Geo can’t imagine spending his life doing anything else. I wanted to find that balance between crafting a romance about a SEAL and making it seem real and relatable.

I credit my podcasts—and my amazing editor—for helping me achieve my goal!
Thanks so much for hosting me today!

George Monteverdi always had one goal, to become a navy SEAL. Now that he’s both a SEAL and a K-9 handler, saving lives is his priority. When tragedy touches his own life, he handles it—with the help of his crew and his dog, Bosch. Having those guys by his side means he’ll never be alone…though any sort of romance feels like a faraway dream.

Heartbroken after her fiancé falls in love with another woman, Lani Abuel seeks comfort in the arms of a stranger, only to find herself pregnant and alone. She’ll do whatever it takes to be a good mother, which means finally facing the trauma in her past. The last thing she expected was a warrior with wounds all too similar to hers finding his way into her heart and loving her child as his own.

As their worlds entwine, Lani and Geo find the joy and redemption they’ve been seeking. But despite the sanctuary they’ve created, a forever love seems impossible. A K-9 handler who spends most of his time deployed with his SEAL team, staring danger in the eye, is far from what Lani—or her baby—needs, and Geo can’t imagine a future doing anything else.

Holding Lani’s eyes with his, Geo tilted the tip of the bottle toward her. “To new friends.”

Smiling, she clinked her glass with his. “And badass dogs.”

Geo couldn’t remember the last time a meal tasted so delicious. He stuffed himself to the gills, finally leaning back in his chair to hide a satisfied belch behind his hand.

Forking up the last bite of her spinach salad, Lani groaned. “I’m so full. I need to get out and move.”

He couldn’t resist. “I thought you didn’t like to exercise. Ow!”

She glared at him as she kicked his shin again. “You’re not supposed to make fun of me.” She surged to her feet in mock outrage and started clearing the table. As she bent over him to pick up his plate, he found himself reaching up to brush the backs of his fingers down her smooth cheek.

“You had some flour there,” he said huskily. “Got it.”

Their eyes met, the spark of desire in hers kicking his heartbeat into a sudden gallop.

“Mmm, well…” As he sat breathless, she picked up his napkin and dabbed it gently along the corners of his mouth. “Had some butter there. Got it.”

They stared at each other, and she leaned in closer. Helplessly, he lifted his face, lips parting…

Crash!

The fork sliding from his plate to the table broke the spell, and with a self-conscious chuckle, she straightened and turned to carry the dishes to the sink.

Geo raked a hand through his hair, once again willing his body to calm down.

She’s having a baby and you’re leaving, asshole.

Shit. If he repeated that enough times to himself, maybe he’d eventually be able to remember it.

Two battle buddies. One fateful deployment. Two vastly different sets of wounds. One friendship changed forever.

A childhood in foster care taught Carey Everett to hold tight to what he has. Enlisting in the Marines gave him purpose, but a life-threatening injury ended his career—and took his leg. Now fully recovered, Carey’s happier than he’s ever been. He has a fulfilling job, a chosen family and, best of all, a cherished friendship with Jase DeSantis, the platoon medic who saved his life.

Despite Jase’s heroism in combat, he’s haunted by his actions overseas. Playing music with his band keeps the demons at bay, but it’s a battle he’s starting to lose.

After a week of sun and fun in San Diego, Jase and Carey’s connection takes an unexpected turn. With change comes a new set of challenges. For Jase, it means letting someone else into his deepest pain. For Carey, it’s realizing love doesn’t always equal loss. In order to make their relationship work, they’ll have to come to terms with their pasts…

…or risk walking away from each other for good.

Carey snatched up his crutches and hopped to the kitchen.

Seated at the table with a tumbler, Jase took one look at him and burst into laughter.

“What?” Carey asked crossly. “I have a booger hanging out my nose or something?”

“No, the saying on your shirt.” Wiping his eyes on the hem of his own black tee, Jase wheezed, “‘Marine: Some Assembly Required.’”

Wordlessly, Carey turned to show him the back, which read: “I had a blast in Afghanistan.”

That sent Jase into peals of more laughter, the husky sound brushing like crushed velvet along Carey’s skin. “Glad you find it amusing,” he said drily. “Adele actually gave me this.”

At the mention of the physical therapist who’d treated Carey at Walter Reed, Jase’s cheeks turned pink. Carey couldn’t help but chuckle. “Yeah, I know about you two. She told me.”

“She did?”

A perpetually cheerful woman anyway, Adele had had an extra spring in her step one morning as she’d bounced into the amputee clinic. “Had dinner with your friend Jase last night,” she’d said, eyes sparkling. “And also, you know, breakfast.”

Carey had grunted, not in the least concerned about Jase’s sex life. “Can you spot me on the weight bar?” he’d asked, and that was that.

Now he regarded Jase thoughtfully. “It amazes me, how you stay friends with all your exes.”

An indignant look crossed Jase’s face. “What do you mean, all my exes? And Adele isn’t an ex, not really. That was mostly timing, comfort.” He shrugged. “Fun.”

Carey lowered himself into a chair. “Well, she still asks about you when she comes out to work at the ranch. Gets this faraway look on her face.” He snorted at Jase’s smug glance. “Oh, you’re just that good, huh?”

Jase lifted an eyebrow. “Wanna find out?”

Even though Carey knew he was joking, a frisson of remembered heat flashed through him. He cleared his throat. “Nah. You’re the bi one here, not me.”

Their eyes met and held before Jase murmured, “Hmm. Pity.”

It was Carey’s turn to blush as a tingle of heat spread from his belly down between his legs. He risked a glance at Jase again, only to find gentle teasing on his face.

Shaking his head, Carey shot him a rueful smile. “You goof. What would you have done if I’d said yes?”

“If you’d said yes—” Jase got to his feet and poured Carey a few fingers from the bottle of Tennessee Honey liqueur on the counter. After he’d set the tumbler down in front of him, he leaned in close. “I’d have made sure you thoroughly enjoyed yourself. What else?”

With a wink, Jase sauntered off to his bedroom, leaving Carey staring after him, his pulse pounding so hard he wondered if Jase could hear it.

In the writing world, I see a lot of questions about time management. Well, not only am I a pantser, I also have a full-time day job. That means I have to get very creative with my time! I get up at 3:30 or 4:00 in the morning, which gives me two-plus hours to write before the day gets going. I have an iPad Pro with an attached keyboard that’s loaded with the Microsoft Word app. That thing goes everywhere with me! I write in the car while waiting for my kid’s football practice to finish up. I write during my lunch hour, or in the doctor’s waiting room, any time I have a spare moment, even if it’s only five or ten minutes. I actually think writing this way helps me. Sometimes a simple change in scenery will kickstart my creativity, and I’m able to get past a block.

I work in a library, and since a lot of my time is spent on a computer at the customer service desk, I’m able to keep my personal email open. If an idea or snippet of dialogue pops into my head, I’ll jot it down in a draft email that’s then available to me later across all my devices. Sometimes I’m able to do research on my story by reading news articles, or searching the library database for books on the subject. I try to incorporate research into any downtime at work that I have.

Speaking of research, I love listening to podcasts related to my characters’ professions, if I can find them. For example, Navy SEALs. Luckily, I’ve found a variety of podcasts relating to the military or special operations community. Listening to them gives me a feel for the culture, and the terminology, which then helps me add authenticity to my books. I’ve found these podcasts to be amazingly helpful, not to mention fascinating!

It’s not always easy to fit writing into my daily life, especially a life with two teenage boys who always need to be somewhere, but so far I’ve managed it and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Thanks so much for hosting me today!

Devon Lowe is a survivor.

A survivor of war. Of combat. And of a betrayal by men she considered her brothers-in-arms. But her trailblazing work as a Cultural Support Team member working alongside the Navy SEALs is too important for her to back down now.

Fresh off a painful break-up, Air Force pararescueman Rhys Halloran recognizes Devon’s trauma for what it is—something that’s left her isolated, but far from irreparably damaged.

With Devon’s trust still lying shattered back in Afghanistan, putting her faith in a man who’s nursing a broken heart isn’t easy. But she’s tired of people making her feel weak, and Rhys makes her feel anything but, sparking a heated attraction that was never part of the plan.

With all eyes on Devon to prove herself in a brutal man’s world, having it all will mean putting her heart on the line like never before. But when it comes to Rhys, it’s an uphill battle she’s ready to fight.

The night before, for the first time since he could remember, Rhys had fallen asleep with another woman on his mind.

The same woman now sitting and staring pensively at the plane. After a moment’s hesitation, Rhys gathered his courage and approached her, not sure of his welcome.

“Mind some company?”

Devon glanced up with what looked like a genuine smile. “Not at all.”

Rhys lowered himself to sitting and drew his knees up, ankles crossed, loosely draping his arms around them. “You okay?

With a shrug, Devon mirrored his pose and nodded at the plane. “Just sitting here trying to analyze my feelings.”

“About going back?”

“Mmm.”

“I can imagine those are some pretty complicated feelings,” Rhys said gently.

“Yeah, well, I’m in a totally different place now, at least. Back then I was so idealistic, so trusting, so goddamn stupid.”

Rhys didn’t say anything, just let her talk.

“I thought that bad things couldn’t happen to me, or if they did, it’d be something heroic, you know? Not—” She shook her head. “And now all I want to do is reclaim that part of myself that someone else took from me.”

A lump rose into Rhys’s throat at the slight quaver in her voice.

“Well, this time around you have me,” he said fiercely. “You have the guys.” He nodded his head toward Matt and Shane, who were leaning against a nearby wall, arms crossed, each with one booted foot propped against it, heads close together.

Devon smiled when she saw them. “Think they worked everything out?”

Rhys was about to say he hoped so when Matt pushed off the wall. As he did, Shane snaked his hand behind him and gave his ass a firm pinch, followed by a discreet pat. Matt elbowed him, hard, but he was smiling while he sauntered away.

“Um, I think that’s a pretty safe bet.”

He and Devon snickered together, and she bumped him with her shoulder. “You’re right. It’s gonna be different this time, for lots of different reasons.”

But diving into a relationship can’t be so simple. Being together means Trevor risking the last link he has to his son…leaving Jesse to wonder if he’ll ever be enough, or if Trevor will always be haunted by the past.

Read an Excerpt:

Jesse led Trevor back over to their rock bench and knelt to rummage in his pack. “In Afghanistan, the tradition is to shoot flares off on the one-year anniversary of someone—of losing someone.” He pulled a small box out of a zippered pocket and held it up. “Obviously we can’t shoot off flares around here, but I thought maybe we could light these for Riley tonight.”

Trevor stared at him before reaching out to take the box from him. “Sparklers?” he said wonderingly. “You bought sparklers?”

“Yeah. I brought a lighter, too.” Jesse brandished it. “Hey, if you don’t want to, that’s—”

“No, it’s perfect. Riley loved these things on the Fourth of July.” Trevor took one out. “Here, light me.”

It took a few tries, but soon Trevor’s sparkler was burning, the little stick spitting and glowing bright in the dark night.

Jesse lit his off of Trevor’s, holding it away from himself, watching the shower of sparks. “God, I haven’t done these since I was a kid.”

“You can write in the air with them, remember?” Trevor made a curlicue motion, leaving behind a spiral of light that dissipated a split second later.

Jesse tried it, and soon they were laughing, trying to top each other’s skywriting artwork, running through the box of sparklers until they were down to the last few.

Finally Trevor sank down on the stone bench, holding his aloft and looking up at the sky. “I miss you, Riley James. I love you.”

Jesse hoisted his sparkler up, too. “Miss you, Riles.”
