While this was clearly a device to progress the relationship between Rynn and Shas, it was unbelievable and given no realistic reasoning to how or why it happened. None of this is ever addressed either.

For the problems I had with the book, I still enjoyed reading it. The yaoi elements to the characters and even when they flipped towards the end are enjoyable themes to read and the futuristic setting was well crafted. While certainly not the best offering from the author, a solid angst filled romance nonetheless and may even be the start of a series considering the unresolved aspects to the book. Especially intriguing is the world of the Sursein and his avatars. The concept of how they distribute justice and their ability to see truth was fascinating and one of the most original and unique parts of the book. Also while there was definite erotica, it was kept to a minimum so the focus could be on the characters and the story for much of the book. Fans of the author will likely enjoy this offering.

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen when the elements themselves got into a war, then this book might appeal to you. However, don’t let those pesky details swamp you since the author doesn’t spend much time on them either. The focus is much more on Joel and Charlie’s unusual connection. Both men are interesting, yet the dichotomy and confusion on both sides runs a bit long considering one minute their old relationship is over and the next they’re in a motel going at it. Similarly, the action scenes are easily predictable and lack any realistic tension within the setting the author’s created. However, this is a fantasy so if you can set aside your qualms and questions and simply enjoy the ride you might like the unique themes used. Even without an adequate explanation, the idea of the Element War is interesting, just as the characters and their purpose in a renewed war sets up possible sequels.

Unfortunately the book leaves too many hanging threads and in conjunction with the ill-described world and characters, this may not appeal to all audiences. On the plus side the sex is hot and plentiful and dominates the book and the actual prose is tight and solid, even if the plot is weak and convoluted. So for an entertainment read, this might appeal but for an absorbing action read, this is a miss. I can still say I didn’t hate reading the book, didn’t consider it a waste of my time and it certainly had me thinking as it will you. So, if this sounds like your type of book, go for it.

This is a slapstick and humorous story that shows the strength of the author’s quirky style and witty dialogue from the wide cast of characters to the stop and starts relationship attempts between TJ and MacGowan. The characters are engaging and funny, even if the author doesn’t explain why or how everyone came to be in the same place, it almost doesn’t matter. The final outcome was predictable but that doesn’t take away from the sweet romance, adding a satisfying happy end to a really funny and entertaining book. Allow yourself to get swept away with the author’s unique brand of humor and this will turn into a light hearted romp with great, sexy characters with more than a few laugh out loud moments. It’s certainly easy to believe in magic and romance when presented by the humorous and talented efforts of Willa Okati. Be sure to get this book, you will love it.
