When I first read Amaranth was a character with both male and female gentalia, I was curious about a romance and the sex between the two main characters. This wasn’t just a romance but a heartfelt tale of healing after a brutal attack on Ash (there is a mention of rape later on but the act isn’t shown). The characters fall deeply in love, even though them being together is forbidden. When Ash realizes the two of them can’t be together because of their differences he leaves, only to have Amaranth chase after him when Amaranth realizes Ash is his one and only love.

After a slow start, this book dug into my soul with a love I felt jumping off the pages. At times I wanted to yell at Ash for being so stupid and I wanted to hold Amaranth as his heart broke when Ash left. That was how real the characters seemed to me. At the beginning of the novel, there is a foreword explaining the intersex words “sie” and “hir” but it confused me before and it still confuses me now. Amaranth identifies as a male, that was enough for me. The sex scenes were very well written but Ash is a man and Amaranth does have male and female bits. So I can’t put it in the either the gay or heterosexual category.

In a nutshell, this isn’t your mother’s romance novel. Jessica Freely has created two beautiful characters that live on in my heart. Amaranth and Ash have an unusual love that left me wishing for more from this universe. If you do, then the moments of humor combined with the exaggerated actions and dialogue are much more fun. Once you realize the story is over the top in every conceivable way, then it’s more enjoyable to just have fun with it. The writing is occasionally uneven and contains lengthy internal monologues that try to convey all the world building that would have been more appropriate in other places.

Overall, though, this is a decent story once you can give in to the outrageous nature of the writing and characters. Then their tendency to shout, demand, and exclaim every piece of dialogue makes more sense. The vibrant colors offered and few bits of whimsical humor make this something different and worth reading for that alone.

Sadie, Cassidy’s deceased grandmother, and her house, are no mere plot points. They are characters all their own, in the best sense of the word.

After my first, wrongheaded impressions had been swiftly shattered, I found it amusing that Cassidy and Nate spend most of the novel not having sex. Quite honestly, the not having sex and almost having sex was hotter and more squirm-inducing than most sex-filled novels I’ve read. The ultimate message, that it’s never too late if you can muster the courage necessary, strikes a universal chord. With enough light moments to keep the gloom at bay, and enough serious, often heartrending moments to engage the emotions fully, this is a romance for all seasons, a timeless story that proves acceptance has nothing to do with generation or status.

Quite often I forgot whose point of view we were supposedly following since the two main men feel so close in thoughts and actions. Noah has more reservations about being openly gay but he gets over those issues pretty quickly. The work subplot is very odd and seems only thrown in so the resolution and happy ending can be prolonged. I didn’t really mind because the characters are fun and the sex scenes are hot.

There are some really good moments such as Noah with his younger brother and the emotional connection between Noah and Jason. I wish the story hadn’t concentrated on being so light since there was so much potential for it to be more intense and interesting. As it was, this is a decent but fluffy piece that offers some very good, hot sex scenes and likable characters. It’s not the kind of story that lingers but I’m certain you’ll still enjoy reading it a lot.

Later he realizes his mysterious find can’t speak at all, but that doesn’t stop the two from finding a common language in touch. Sparks fly and Barnabas realizes he has entire conversations with the stranger through touch, sight, and emotion. But Barnabas’ lover is not simply human and the discovery throws Barnabas into a whirlwind of emotion and questions what is the right thing to do.

Tease is an interesting story in that one of the characters, later nicknamed Tease, can’t speak so there is no dialogue between the two. Thus the story is told entirely from Barnabas’ third person perspective. Barnabas believes he can understand what Tease is trying to tell him through his eyes and his touch. This is pretty questionable since Barnabas is quite often ignorant of what Tease is trying to say and just makes up what he wants to believe. Overall this succeeds, in that it’s a very different story when one of the main characters doesn’t speak at all. This forces the other to speak for him and often in error. Also this makes the story very internal with Barnabas frequently musing, and a lot of sex. In a wealth of paranormal stories, this certainly stands out as something entirely different and unique and thus worth reading. It’s got a few bumps but the story takes chances and has some really good ideas.
