I think it allowed the characters to truly complement each other and gave them the basis to build a bridge to a successful relationship. It also gave these otherwise far from normal characters a human quality about them that allowed me to see them as real people instead of just characters in a book.

The beginning of the story left me a little puzzled, though, I have to admit. It felt like the author jumped in a little too rapidly, which left me feeling like there was a missed a page or two. However, once I caught up to speed, everything fell right into place and I became enthralled by the storyline.

The conflict within the book was fascinating. It’s a continuation from previous stories within the series, so followers won’t be disappointed. Yet, because the characters’ personal experiences are detailed by the author I could appreciate the conflict without having read previous stories. There were times I felt the personal conflict overshadowed the romantic development, but on the whole it kept me truly entertained. I have always thought that antagonistic conflicts help to heighten a romantic relationship since it adds a element of danger. I am happy to say that there was certainly danger around every corner and because of that, the characters had plenty reasons and opportunities to come together.

Anyone who enjoys paranormal stories will find this one fascinating. It runs the gamut of vampires, shifters, sorcerers, and others that have yet to reveal their secrets making this book jam-packed with paranormal excitement. There are so many entertaining elements to this story and if you read Rubies of Fire you will understand why.

Also the issues brought up are more intense. Not all of these issues are well handled. Most are glossed over very easily and quickly, more for the plot point of the issue than the actual resolution. Secret Light is not necessarily a feel good story but it’s wonderfully written and highlights a more realistic look at gay men in that time. It offers a hopeful ending with men deeply in love trying to etch out a future the best way they can. There are a few quibbles here and there but honestly this stands out in the genre and makes it easy to recommend and like. It’s different but more so moving without being heartbreaking or too intense.

This was probably the most “real” erotic romance I have ever read.

Even though this novel is paranormal in origin, I found the storyline believable and realistic. Circumstances, may have been larger-than-life, the rich girl running from her father and a werewolf tracking her, but it was their relationship that I found the most genuine.

Madeline has been on the run for six months. She knows her time is limited, but all she can do is try to stay one step ahead of her father. She wants to live and once her father catches up with her, she knows it will all end. Before she can move onto her next location she is stopped by a storm, a wolf and a stranger. With time running out she has to break free, but she is not sure if her heart can handle it.

Aidan is known as the perfect tracker. He always finds his mark, but something is off about Madeline’s case. His senses tell him her father is lying. From the moment he scents Madeline he can tell she is pure and an innocent, but there is more and he just can’t figure out what it is. Breaking one of his first rules, he gets involved. Now it’s not just her father he needs to protect her from, he needs to battle his own kind too.

Madeline and Aidan are two people with secrets that could destroy them. Madeline’s secret is heartbreakingly unbelievable and with Aidan’s secret he could lose his heart and soul. It is a race to find the truth behind the lies before their enemies take everything away from them.

There are two things that stood out for me in this book. While this is an extremely sensual novel, the love scenes were the most authentic I have ever read. Sometimes with explicit scenes, you think, “WOW, I wish I could find a lover like that”. So the mystery was a bit weak for me, but the romance more than made up for it. Ms. Kauffman told a great story. I am not disappointed one bit! I can see this storyline continuing. My fingers are crossed that it happens.

If you are looking for a truly different paranormal romance, then pick up Comes the Wolf. The story is a well told and steamy read.

Write a good ghost story and then set it in the Regency era and you have my attention. I had high expectations for this story and it didn’t disappoint me. Ms. Rock did a wonderful job immediately setting the scene with Rose entering the house and being asked to free it of ghosts. It almost reminded me of an old gothic tale but instead of being Victorian this one was of an earlier time.

As she explores the house you get the feeling that there’s something creepy about it and the owner hasn’t been imagining things. There’s also an erotic edge to it, especially when Rose first sees the two men. In fact, the book had a wonderful balance of eerie story and erotic tale. I liked all three characters but especially Rose who seemed to be down on her luck. I cheered for her but at the same time wondered how the author would bring this to a happy ending for all three characters.

The dialogue is good and the pacing perfect for the tale which does, in fact, have a satisfying conclusion. I’ll definitely be looking out for more stories by Ms. Rock.

If you enjoy a historical short story packed with ghostly and erotic goings on in an old house, this is one you won’t want to miss.
