The dialogue in this tale was so much fun. Unicorns see the world in ways that humans can barely even imagine. These differences showed up almost immediately, and they brought a smile to my lips on more than one occasion. The unicorn actually turned out to be my favorite character of all in this book due to all of the zany things that tend to happen to people who meet them. Discussing specific examples of what happened would lead this review too far into spoiler territory, but suffice it to say that anything can and does happen when one of these creatures shows up!

I would have liked to see more character development. Maira was a fascinating protagonist whose physical features were described in detail, but I had trouble picking up on what kind of personality she has. Knowing if she’s generally shy, gregarious, talkative, or something else entirely would have made it really easy for me to give this story a much higher rating.

There’s something to be said for falling in love with a good friend. The romance in this piece was just as prominent as the science fiction themes, but neither genre ever overpowered the other one. What made it even more interesting, though, were the positive messages sprinkled throughout the plot. I wasn’t expecting them, but they worked quite well with all of the other themes.

Love Rampage is a good choice for anyone who likes romantic science fiction.

The world described in The Heart of the Kingdom is a rich and believable world, replete with a variety of characters and places. My favorite spot was the tree inhabited by dwarves, a spot I’d really like to visit in person. The characters are also well-drawn, three-dimensional, and interesting. I especially liked Cenric and Rylan. The dynamics between them rings true and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop.

The plot is exciting with a lot of twists and plenty of curses. The mystery of who is behind the curses is well plotted and it took me quite awhile to figure things out. Parts of it I didn’t deduce until the very end, so the book is a real page turner. It is hard to decide who can be trusted and who can’t.

I liked the way the point of view changed from Cenric in the first part to Rylan in the second. It was fun to see the love develop between them, how each was uncertain about the feelings of the other, and how they managed to resolve their feelings. It is really very sweet indeed.

The Heart of the Kingdom is the first book in The Kingdom Curses series and it is one that fantasy readers will really enjoy. Personally, I’m looking forward to reading more in this series. It has really captured my interest.

It’s hard to outrun the past, but that hasn’t stopped Elizabeth from trying.

The descriptions of the abandoned car made me wish I could sit in it. The differences between it and what one can generally find in a regular automobile weren’t always easy to spot right away, but once they were revealed I was curious to learn more about them. Some of the most interesting sections of this short story were devoted to exploring these differences without giving away the biggest pieces of the puzzle right away.

While I understand Elisabeth and Melissa’s strong preference for a quiet, rural life, there were times when their aversion to modern technology felt unrealistic for a story with a contemporary setting. There are definitely people out there who aren’t comfortable using these things, but I would have preferred to have some sort of explanation for why there are two of them living in the same household. In my experience, that’s extremely rare. Figuring out why this was the case distracted me from an otherwise engaging plot.

Elisabeth has lived with her secrets for a long time. She seemed like the kind of person who has always followed the rules, so I was curious to see what someone as mild-mannered as her could possibly be hiding from her partner. What intrigued me even more about this character is what all of this secret-keeping says about her personality. It was a smart way to dig into what makes Elisabeth tick while still expecting readers to piece certain clues together on our own.

I’d recommend A&A Salvage to anyone who enjoys science fiction that has a completely ordinary setting.

Living in a magic-infused society is only fun for people who understand the rules well enough to take advantage of them. Only time will tell if Anastasia is one of them.

At first I wasn’t sure what I thought of the character development in this novella. It took me some time to get to know Anastasia, in particular, well enough to tell how or if she was adapting to all of the difficult changes in her life. Ms. Taylor had a few tricks up her sleeves that I wasn’t anticipating, though, so once I noticed them I was pleased with everything she ended up doing with this cast.

The romance was bizarre to me due to how how the characters involved in it met one another. Their relationship doesn’t involve anything illegal, but I really would have preferred to know about these themes ahead of time. They’re something I usually avoid when deciding what to read next because I find this kind of thing so odd.

One of the things I like the most about the fantasy genre is how it uses magic, spells, and other seemingly lighthearted topics to address sensitive subject matter. Dressing up a potentially painful issue in this sort of manner can make it easier to discuss how they affect people. It’s difficult to discuss what exactly is going on in Anastasia’s world without giving away spoilers, but I was impressed by how accurately the author described what it’s like to grow up in a dysfunctional home. This subplot was well done.

I’d recommend Anastasia to anyone in the mood for a dark fairy tale.

One of the things I enjoyed the most about this novella was seeing how the characters wrestled with their creative sparks. This was my first introduction to Ms. Propps’ work. I was pleased with how thoroughly she seems to understand both artistic culture and her characters.

It would have been helpful if the characters who become romantically involved with one another had had more time to get to know each other platonically first. I understand being wildly attracted to someone you’ve just met, but the emotional side of their relationship moved far too quickly for me to find it believable. Portraying it as a purely sexual matter would have worked better for these particular characters since they’ve just met and only limited information about the rest of their lives was shared.

The science fiction elements of this tale were richly detailed and compelling. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect at first due to how evasive the blurb was about this part of the plot. Not having any advanced knowledge of what would happen turned out to be a good thing, though, given how quickly everything begins to make sense.

I’d recommend In the Garden of Eve to fans of science fiction and romance novels alike.
