I enjoyed reading this book although I would have liked to see more romantic interaction between the two main characters a little earlier. Ashe is a quirky young woman who has a continuous dialogue going on inside her head; when Lurch is silent, she talks to herself. The man she knows from before is Shan, but he doesn’t remember her – maybe because their meeting is still in his future. Ashe is instantly attracted to him which confuses her. In the other time she believes he has had a fling with “great, great – not so great” grandma who is also a previous host of Lurch.

Aggressive robots, a traitor in Shan’s family, and Ashe’s inability to access her full resources: all these things make for a fast moving book with mystery and adventure. I liked the mixture of science fiction and time travel, along with the adventure and underlying mystery of who was out to get Shan and what had happened to his brother.

Ms Jones has created strong characters who interact well with each other with the added internal conversation between Lurch and Ashe. For most of the book Shan is not aware of Lurch, but he does wonder why Ashe occasionally gets a faraway look in her eyes. The minor characters add richness to the story while unexpected mechanical beings make their presence felt.

Whether you prefer straight science fiction or like yours with a dash of romance, this is a very enjoyable read.

I suddenly so wanted magic to happen. That magic wasn’t all that far away, as Voo-Doo King is in this mix of odd characters. Other supporting characters include: one much-attached slave and more than anyone’s share of well-meaning, crotchety, envious servants and one particularly ghastly butler. They are all well-done and believable.

This is a complex story, and the details are well-handled, occasionally amusing, and the plot will without doubt keep you guessing. The backdrop provides details that prove both well-researched and interesting,

The somewhat convoluted opening is more annoying than intriguing. However, a patient reader will discover clarification along the way. This is a small matter in a story that manages to be both continually engaging and entertaining. Occasional stilted language interrupts what might otherwise be described as a wonderful overall mood or aura. Billed as seductive suspense, Once Upon a Midnight lives up to its advertising. Ms. Scott writes a tingly seduction scene, and the suspense doesn’t quit from one page to the next. However, it is the characters that earn this tale a 4 star review.

Mary is such a delightful character. She seems completely real; like a friend caught in the most unfortunate (yet sometimes wonderful) circumstances. She’s brave and sure beyond her years. Her circumstances are out of her control, yet she soldiers on no matter where she ends up, with a wry sense of humor, a goal, and a sense of determination.

I highly recommend you read Once Upon A Midnight, because Mary’s story is not to be missed.

Magic, mayhem and evil weave their way through this story. The characters are good or bad, sometimes they go from one to the other. Elder Magic is exactly the right title for this book – the source and spells of the magic used by the mages has been harvested from the magic of the past.

The Talisman of the ancient mage Kaen has been stolen. The thief has also taken half the magic from the node in Worlton. The chest of Dorea who was Kaen’s twin, forces apprentice mage Narle, and healer Laan to set out on a journey. They believe they are going to recover the Talisman, but the chest has other ideas.

On their journey they come across men and women who have risen from the dead, magical amulets with strange properties and spells unkown in their time. Narle and Laan believe they know who is friend and who is foe, but unfolding events cast doubt in their minds.

Magic spells are simple, but draw on the mage’s inner store of magic, amulets or nodes. The spells can be very effective, but usually last only for a short time. Sometimes the spells go awry and cause unexpected results.

The journey takes all concerned across the barren and cold wastelands of the country, nearer and nearer to the place the chest wishes to go. The horses carrying the travellers are strangely empathic with their riders and play a big part in the story.

This tale drew me through the pages at a steady pace. I felt I could close the book when I wanted, but knew I would have to go back to find out what happened. Not a novel of extreme excitement but definitely one that gets its hooks into the reader, forcing them to carry on reading to the end.

When I finished reading the last page I was left with a warm, satisfied feeling.

I haven’t read the previous two novels of this series, but if Elder Magic is anything to go by, they should be equally good to read.

Now this story really threw me off. First she attempts to take blood without his permission, and then later in the story there is a big power play between the two. More than once I felt like the human girl had more control over the situation than the vampire, which made for a weak lead guy and that just doesn’t work for me.

“Fighting Fire with Fire” was a definite good read. Who would ever think of a super hot, sexy vampire being a stud muffin fire fighter? A double dose of hotness in a powerfully sexy read.

It was one of the best anthologies I have ever read, overall. All the stories were fun, sexy and full of the fantasy of vampires. Guaranteed to make you wiggle in your seat, I have no doubt you will love it as much as I did.
