From the first page I was hooked! The plot was clever, engaging, and I was full of anticipation for what would happen next since there were several twists and turns. The plot wasn’t totally predictable and was mostly believable. I experienced some pleasant surprises.

Sam Hixton, the hero, was shot and left for dead but managed to stumble into Cassie’s store with a “help me” and “hide this”. If there was a “Pause Life” button I’d have pushed it then. Thank goodness such a button doesn’t exist because at 40% through the book there was a scene that literally had me stumbling and muttering to myself in a not so pleasant way. Up to this scene the author did an excellent job drawing me into the story and making me feel involved with the small struggling town with the complex locals that resided there.

The synopsis actually refers to a fateful night when the hero and heroine gave in to their fiery passion. The placement and timing was farfetched and unbelievable. Seriously, Sam is irresistible but not that irresistible. There’s a sentence that said “it wasn’t the ideal time, but he wasn’t about to argue”. The only thing that was fateful that night was the fact they chose that moment to not be able to repress their feelings another moment longer. I know this is a romance, and their desire was inevitable, but come on. Right then?

Even though the story was able to draw me back in, it was never the same; it didn’t have the same gripping power over me as it had before that ‘fateful’ event. Just when I was able to put the scene out of my mind, the couple referred to it later in the story as if it was a personal inside joke between them. They admitted that they wished their first time together was a different place and time. I could only agree with their assessment.

Regardless, I was still hooked to find out how in the world was she going to save the store and how in the world their love for each other would endure through all the obstacles and complications. I really loved it when Sam stood up for Cassie to the locals. Each time he did I was cheering “Ha! Take that!” As much as Cassie was stubborn, she was smart enough to know when to bend and when to apologize when she went too far.

The author did a good job securing a happy ending for all involved leaving me feeling justified, vindicated, and with a sweet closure. It was a nicely wrapped happy ending. It was like eating a really delicious meal that left you with mild heartburn. You know you’d eat it again but next time you’d bring the antacids with you. 🙂

This book has so many threads that it’s like a giant spider web that captured me and I didn’t know which way to turn. There is a grand cast of characters that were so plentiful and diverse that this novel could be made into a mini-series. It kind of reminded me of the TV series, Dallas, back in the late 1970’s, but better. There were so many twists and turns with multiple plots all woven together that it amazed me that Ms. Hoos was able to keep them all straight and on point.

Here’s a warning for readers – there are jarring scene shifts. Even though I didn’t have a big problem with them, they were a bit abrupt. There I was, in the zone, reading a scene when all of a sudden I’m somewhere else exciting, then I’m yanked out again and back into where I was before, still exciting, still fascinated but it takes a split second to reorient. This happens throughout the book.

There are some scenes that contain some graphic, rough sex which take place between a bad pirate and a secondary character. I was okay with them but some readers may not be.

I wanted to make this review longer but I can’t go into details because everything I might say would be a spoiler. Everything is so interconnected it’s just not possible to pinpoint any one thing.

Ms. Hoos was able to take care of all her characters and plot threads to provide a satisfactory conclusion. There’s action, double crossing, secrets, lies, revenge and so much more to be sucked in by that I wasn’t able to put the book down. Even the dialogue was good, and the chemistry between the hero and heroine absolutely worked.

Cate and Alexander’s journey to their happy ever after left me breathless. Make sure you have time to sit down and concentrate on this story. This is one of those stories I won’t forget anytime soon.

Whether she likes it or not, Colton plans to take her safety into his own hands. How will Maggie keep her shop afloat with a madman after her? More importantly, how will she keep her heart intact when Colton admits her safety isn’t the only thing he wants in his hands?

This was the perfect book for me to escape from the summer heat. It was literally refreshing to read a story staged during the late winter season in Colorado with snow. I lowered my A/C and snuggled with a blanket and thoroughly enjoyed reading about Maggie and Colton’s growing attraction & evolving relationship with each other.

I was a little annoyed with Maggie’s insecurities regarding trust in Colton that he wouldn’t leave her but, lucky for her I can’t resist reading about a hero that is a strong cowboy with an instinct to protect those he loves.

The story was cleverly written and often made me chuckle at Maggie’s quick wit and Colton’s persistent humorous teasing. The synopsis mentioned a mad man was after Maggie which made it difficult for her to run her cupcake bakery shop. This suspense kept me turning the pages.

The plot wasn’t totally predictable; I suspected who was threatening Maggie’s life but wasn’t 100% sure. I thought the story was well written and flowed smoothly with plenty of interesting twists. I particularly enjoyed Colton’s clever and unique proposal to Maggie at the end. I have to mention that the descriptions of the cupcakes were to die for. I seriously was craving one of Maggie’s cupcakes and wished her shop existed locally near me.

I am curious if a story will be written for her best friend Lizzy and Colton’s brother, Dade. They would make an interesting couple. I would definitely buy this book and recommend it to my friends but I’d warn them to have a cupcake to go with it. 🙂

I loved everything about this book. I loved the brilliant and witty writing style that pulled at my heartstrings, made me laugh, and really just captured my heart. I couldn’t ask for better characters. Asher and Emily, the hero and heroine were both strong and equally matched yet polar opposites. The chemistry between the two was just delicious! I fell in love with Asher and his entire family. I only wish my mother-n-law was as lovable as Sophie was.

I also loved the honesty and integrity that was displayed by the characters. The plot was not only believable it was riveting. I wasn’t expecting the phone call that Emily got at Asher’s parent’s house and my heart just broke for her. I would warn anyone who reads this book to be prepared. Some readers might be turned off by Asher in the beginning. Give him a chance. One of the reasons I loved the hero is for his redemption quality. At first he is a jerk but by the end he is “the hero that we all dream of”.

Allowing herself to be seduced is the last thing Lucy should do. But Vido is warm and vital and the living image of David, so how can she resist?

Florentine Enchantment by Judith B Glad offers the dilemma of a well-educated woman in times of old, in Italy. The main character is a strong, intelligent woman, but desires not learning, but love. We have her story as if spoken directly from her mouth.

It is an interesting approach, although some is merely setting the stage for the story, and is somewhat slow going. We need to wade through long explanations before we get so much as a conversation.

The setting is utterly magnificent; from the scents of olive trees to the sculptures in the square, this writer puts us in the scene: the city of Firenze, and impact of the sensual sculptures. Desire is inflamed as if from sculpture, and it is then that our heroine meets Vido. Is it love? It seems something else… and this story moves along quickly from that point on.

Intriguing? Yes. And we can put the belief issue on hold. Florentine Enchantment is original; in fact, wonderfully creative, and imaginative. The whole point of the story, however, seems to be to get to a particular scene; and those who read hot specifically for the heat might enjoy this.

I am the self-proclaimed queen of abstinence.

After a failed engagement and years of being told I am not enough, I have given up on love. I am content in my life. I have a great job. I have a supportive family I have built over the years. My life is not exciting, but it is the life I have chosen.

That is until I inadvertently walked into Austin Black’s life. Austin is as beautiful as he is endearing and with a single plea for friendship, he pulls me in. He is an All-Pro quarterback and has women falling at his feet, yet he opts for my friendship in hopes it will lead to more.

I refuse to give him what he wants, but as our friendship deepens my resolve begins to weaken. Willing to take whatever I can offer Austin stands by my side seemingly content as friends.

Austin and I find a groove in life that works until the proverbial line is crossed. I quickly realize I have to face my past if I have any hope for a future with the only man to make me dream of one.

Is it possible to date someone without realizing you are in a relationship? Can Austin be the one to melt the fortress around my heart? Will it matter if he does? In my experience, love has never been enough.

Rylee swore she’d never be vulnerable again.

After a disastrous engagement, Rylee vowed never to fall in love again, and for a few years, she managed to keep that promise to herself. Everything changes when Austin moves into the neighborhood. His patience and kindness is unexpected and overwhelming. Suddenly, Rylee finds herself faced with a man who just might have a chance of capturing her heart.

Rylee is a nice woman who is beautiful and very successful. She has no problem hanging out with men, but never moves beyond friendship with any of them. Her reluctance to enter into a romantic relationship is completely understandable given what happened in the past. However, Austin proves from the moment they meet that he is different. He shows Rylee kindness and asks for nothing in return but friendship. They become fast friends and months fly by, though their attraction to each other always simmers under the surface. I feel that Rylee’s hesitance to take things further with Austin is unwarranted after a while. Rylee’s past is devastating, but Austin has proved time after time that he is loyal and completely dedicated to Rylee. He simply wants to be a part of her life in whatever capacity she allows. He has an enormous amount of patience, and I found it frustrating when Rylee continually found ways to distance herself from him. When Rylee and Austin finally take the next step, the sexual chemistry between them is explosive. The sex scenes are well written, but do contain some graphic language that might offend some readers.

Excluding Austin, Rylee’s circle of friends is limited to her brother Jeremy and his best friend Bode. Jeremy and Bode are nice, fun, and totally devoted to Rylee. I think they have potential to be good characters, but as it is they are simply used as muscle and eye candy to frame Rylee, and even that didn’t feel particularly natural or realistic. Consequently, they never moved beyond being types and didn’t truly come to life in my mind.

I must also warn readers that Not Enough ends with a cliffhanger. Toward the end of the story, some strange things happened to Rylee with dangerous consequences for those she cares about. The ending didn’t sit well with me. I would have been okay with an open ended conclusion if at least some of the plot threads had been resolved in satisfying ways, or if I’d been sure that Rylee and Austin would face the danger together. However, that is not the case with this book. When I finished reading, absolutely nothing is certain, not even Rylee and Austin’s budding romance. I can only hope Ms. Bloom has a happier ending for the couple in the next installment.

Despite these issues, I did enjoy watching Rylee and Austin get to know each other. Readers who enjoy muscular heroes and steamy romance might want to give Not Enough a try.

But as more information comes to light, it’s clear that someone is out to destroy his city. The question is will they find them in time?

I really did enjoy this novel because it made me giggle in too many places to count. I loved the characters, their relationships to each other and the new scenery. There was drama because the running suspense plot is still going strong as it’s been throughout the series. Adriel and Eva were very good together.

I liked that Eva was an extremely strong heroine and her shifter form was nothing to mess with. I appreciated the fact that Adriel respected her skill set enough not to pull the ‘I protect my female, she obeys me’ shtick. He’s a smart hero and strong in his own right.

The reason for a lower rating than what I wanted to give is because this book was supposed to be about Eva and Adriel. This was to be their story, or so I thought. For the beginning of the book the only new person I met was Adriel along with many of the characters from previous novels. In fact, I believe a quarter of the book was introducing readers to the new digs, Noctem Falls. The secondary character that stole the show was the ever-quipping, irreverent and brilliant chaos-maker, Meryn, the diminutive firecracker and wife of Adriel’s commander, Adrien. I’m starting to think that Meryn is as much a recurring story arc as the dreaded ferals, now called Reapers. I like her character, I really do – she makes me laugh and I get her jokes and I just adore how she wraps big, bad Adrien around her little finger. But this story is supposed to make me connect, care and become engaged in rooting for Eva and Adriel and I don’t feel I spent enough time with them watching their relationship, with all its quirks, grow and blossom. Because of all the inside jokes, the reference to Keelan and other past events, I would not classify this novel as a standalone read. Readers really do need to have read some of the previous stories to understand the undercurrents that are woven throughout this story.

Another thing was the sheer number of secondary characters that converse all on the same page – many times I got lost. I had to keep backing up to figure out who was speaking at that moment. And I could have sworn Meryn made a mistake and mentioned great-great nephews but that should have been reversed and it should have been uncles, or great cousins, or something, but not nephews. Nephews and nieces are the offspring of the future, it’s uncles, grandfathers and possibly cousins that are in the past, right? So, someone missed that.

For all of the confusion and mayhem, this is still a fun book to read because the characters are so eminently likeable, the humor truly made me laugh out loud and I adore Meryn. I just wish I got to know Eva and Adriel as well. I mean a tiger and a vampire? It’s a great combination! And I really liked it when a very special book was shared and what was revealed affected every single person in the room. It was bittersweet and poignant.

I have no problems recommending My Guardian to fans of the series; they’ll get the references and jokes. If they adore Meryn like I do, she’ll add to the enjoyment and perhaps mitigate the fact that Eva and Adriel’s romance isn’t as strong a focus as they might expect. There is a wonderful happy ever after and that’s a positive for the book too. The set up hook for the next book was well done and I’m more than ready to discover Declan’s mate and how that romance evolves. Overall this is an amazing series and I’ve enjoyed reading every single one. That includes My Guardian.

Smoking hot!

Wow … when the blurb says “love at first sight” it isn’t kidding. The relationship between our hero and heroine goes from zero to 60 in about two pages.

I read this story knowing it was short, so I understand that it’s tough to fully develop a plot or characters in so few pages. I’ve tried to figure that into my feelings about the book, and into my rating. The author is definitely talented. Her skill is undeniable and her voice is fun and easy to read, and I have no issue with that at all. And, although there were a few editing errors and wrong word use, technically, it was a good story.

My issue was the speed of the relationship development. “Love at first sight” doesn’t have to mean leaping into bed moments after meeting someone (and before knowing anything about them … integral to the story is the fact their families are enemies, but since they barely get each other’s first names before getting naked, they have no idea). They progress quickly to a little very light bondage, which felt out of place since that requires a bit of trust and how do you build real trust in a day? I’m not adverse to a story with plenty of sex (especially well-written sex, which this was, though a bit less descriptive than erotic romance), so it wasn’t that abundance that was frustrating, just that I felt as if the plot suffered because so much space was given to sex instead of story.

Still, I really did appreciate the author’s voice and I would definitely pick up another one of her books to try. And if you prefer lots of heat in your stories, this may be a great choice for you to read.

I love the friends to possible lovers trope. Love it. This book didn’t disappoint. The characters are interesting and I liked reading about them. Ms. Durand spun a good tale. I got emotionally involved right away and hoped the characters would get together. For a short book, this delivers the heat, too. Whew!!

One thing that took me out of the story was the use of independent body parts. It was a tad jarring when a character’s hand seemed to move independently of the rest of him or her. That said, I still liked the book and I’m glad I got to read it.

Mel is easy to relate to–she’s had a rough patch and well, she wants to try again in dating. Who hasn’t been there? Then there’s Adam. I loved the description of him. I wanted to lick him, too. He’s sweet and perfect for her.

One night of sleeping in the same bed turns into something much, much more… and soon Luke can’t keep his mind off Harper’s wide gray eyes, or his hands off of her luscious curves. He never thought he’d feel this way about a woman again. But he knows that he can’t tell her the truth about his dark past, and she can’t reveal to him what she’s running from.

Anyway, this isn’t a real relationship. It’s only for a month. Only pretend. Until it isn’t…

He needs a temporary girlfriend and she needs a temporary place to stay. What they both get is so much more.

I love a good small town romance when I get to meet and feel like I’m part of the community along with the characters. Ms. Score did a good job of expanding the story beyond the lives of Luke and Harper. It was a nice start to what I hope becomes at least a trilogy since I NEED to see both Linc and James’ stories. Linc may be Luke’s nemesis but he’s a hot fireman who never really does anything bad in this story and therefore he needs his own HEA.

Speaking of Luke, bless him, the tragic back story that slowly unfolds broke my heart. He has a real personal issue with not having control over situations and his own emotions and I think it took a free spirit like Harper to show him that it’s okay to not always be in control. Life is going to happen one day at time, full of surprises good and bad, regardless of how we try to control the outcomes. I liked that the author didn’t minimize his past and how she brought pieces of the past and present together to heal both Luke and others involved.

I like Harper a lot. Like Luke, she had a not great history but her outlook, and her decision to not let it rule her life made her a stronger person than she first appears. Luke thinks she’s flighty and needs a keeper but Harper proves that push come to shove, she might get knocked down but that doesn’t mean she’s out. She mourns temporarily for what was and she keeps moving. In the end, she teaches Luke how to live again, love again, and accept being loved. Along the way she builds the life she always dreamed of and finds the family she never had. There’s two different foster care elements to this story that totally won me over for the realistic way they were handled.

I’ve seen some reviews that hated Luke’s grand gesture towards the end saying that it made Harper look like a weak damsel. I disagree. What Luke did was as much for himself as it was for Harper. It was his first step towards the future he finally realized he could have if he could reconcile the past. He was pretty harsh when he pushed Harper away but I chalk that up to being scared because he didn’t think he deserved to be happy. If I had one crit about the story it was how vocally as well as internally adamant he was that he could never and would never love again. It was practically a mantra by the end of the book and I was like “okay, I get it, you’re scared” because that was honestly the bottom line.

While Luke’s words say no, his actions towards Harper say yes loud and clear. Their sexual chemistry, once he stops fighting it, was on an explosive level! I had to laugh at one review that complained that they don’t even have sex until about a third of the way in. That’s good, the author wisely used that time to build up the tension. They tease each other with looks, words and touches. When Luke goes all caveman on her after seeing her in Linc’s arms, I cheered because I knew, there was no way he could hold out now. It was awesome!

I did something with this story that I rarely do. When I finished reading it, I started reading it again. I loved this story that much. I truly hope Ms. Score decides to expand this book into a series, even a short one so I can revisit with Harper and Luke but mainly so I can see how Linc and James find love in Benevolence. Ms. Score has another small town series that’s calling my name and if it’s as good as Pretend You’re Mine, I know I’ll be hooked. This book is for readers who love a hot romance with a dash of intrigue.
