Lauren Dane rocked this story like the pro that she is. As usual, she made me fall in love with her wonderful characters. She has created such endearing characters in the Murphy family and I can easily relate to them. That sense of family that she injects into her books is what gives me the warm and fuzzy feelings when I read one of them. I love all of her books, and this one is no different. It is an exceptionally compelling read, that drew me right into the story and too soon I reached the end.

Bottom line: I loved it! A very touching and romantic story.

Tim is visiting beautiful Ireland and doesn’t expect to be so enchanted by Caera, let alone find love with her. But they make amazing music together. Tim cracks me up–they both do. I love the humor that filled the story.

The beginning started off on the slow side, but after a few chapters, I was able to really get into the book. I love the setting, the idea of haunted castles and ghosts, and music, so this was a perfect set up for me. Tim and Caera’s relationship was a hot one from the start, as they both felt an attraction but had their own reasoning for keeping away from it until they couldn’t hide it any longer.

I enjoyed the author’s voice. Ms. Dubois has a great way of description, wit and charm that made for The Harp and the Fiddle to be a delightful read. Whether you are or aren’t a fan of music, I’d say not to miss this delightful tale of love and new chances.

With some unique twists to the usual “slayer” plot, Ms. Mathews novel, My Fallen intrigued me from the get-go.

The book has created some fascinating ideas about those who are less than (or perhaps more than) human. For instance, people who are changed to vampires have a period of time during which they may potentially be changed back. It’s short — seventy-two hours — but a great idea (and the basis of this book, actually, as Xavier and Elise wouldn’t have met if not for this).

The author has given a huge set of conflicts, both internal and external, to keep our hero and heroine apart and it was difficult for me to imagine they’d be able to overcome them all.

I admit, I didn’t like Xavier at first. He was exceptionally blunt and crude to Elise when they first met and if I’d been Elise, I’d have most likely smacked the smug look of his face and then slammed the door on any interaction with him. His initial behavior didn’t endear him to me in the least. But don’t worry … he does some growing and changing as the book progresses and eventually becomes someone I could get behind Elise falling for.

I liked Elise right off. She’s smart, strong, loyal and determined. This is why her reaction to Xavier didn’t ring true to me, at least not at first. She had every reason to dislike him intensely, but it takes no time at all before they’re groping each other and getting naked. I admit, I’m a fan of lots of sexual tension build up before things get physical, so this part of the novel frustrated me some. However, the Fallen are apparently very sexual beings, so as I got to know Xavier and Elise better, I could understand it a bit more.

The plot was truly fantastic, though. It’s a complex world the author has built and populated with exceptionally realistic characters. I’d be hard pressed to name the secondary character I liked best, though I am pulling for Drake to have his own book next.

I spent much of the book wondering who was bad, who wasn’t, what information was correct, and so on. We have lots of information to process, plenty of action (in and out of bed) and a storyline that reels the reader in and holds on tight.  Ashlyn Mathews is a new to me author, and I’m so pleased I opted to review this book.  If she continues on as she’s begun, this book series will be stunning.   My Fallen is sure to please any paranormal romance fan, especially those readers who like their books hot!

I love the idea of going back in time to find your one true love. Isn’t that a common theme in time-travel romances? I was thrown off a bit by the fact that this started off post WWII, not modern day, as I was expecting. That was an obstacle of my own making, and had nothing to do with the story itself, but did confuse me as I was trying to start reading!

What made it even more difficult to want to finish reading was the style in which the first portion of the book was written. It was a narrative–style and didn’t inlcude much dialogue. I found this intensely difficult to read and even more so, repetitive, trite, and a bit preachy. The only thing that kept me reading was the desire to see if anything changed once Laura and Alaric met.

Happily, that was the key! Once the hero and heroine met, there were more opportunities for dialogue, and the story became much easier to read, and the “flow” much better.

There are multiple sexual encounters between them. There is no reserved, coquettish play. In fact, it reads much as modern encounters might. That leads one to forget that the entire interaction at the house takes place over the span of mere days.

The switching between time periods is not a confusing as it could be. It is always nice when a reader is able to say for certain where and when their hero and heroine are existing!

I did find myself fixating on some of the issues surrounding time travel and what the resolution to the story would be. I will state now, that my thoughts were completely incorrect and each possibility was systematically eliminated as I continued to read. Having said that – I was not entirely satisfied by the ending as presented. It was a neat and tidy way to finish the story without too many “time issues”, and I applaud the author for her creativity in this respect. However, I found I was left wanting more.

It may sound as if I disliked the book. This is absolutely not this case. I still feel this is an interesting and intriguing story and am happy that it was told. The characters (once they find each other) blossom and are interesting and worthy of the dialogue bestowed upon them. The secondary characters have some lovely quirks that make them the “spice” in the story.

If you are a time-travel fan, get a hold of a copy. You will enjoy enjoy the relationship that occurs and hopefully be surprised by the ending, too!

Not having read the first book of the series, I suffered a tad of culture shock. Terri Austin’s “oh-so-real” descriptions of The Bottom Dollar strip club, Axton’s house, Penn’s Cigar Bar, and a few other places along with the R-rated language plopped me right down into a unique environment and into a mystery that had so many suspects they needed to take a number. Last Diner Standing is crammed full of complex characters with clandestine actions running amok.

Rose Strickland, who hasn’t earned a bachelor’s degree in six years of college, juggles her many lives as she tries to decide what she wants to be when she grows up. Her family’s high society life that she must be a part of at times always gets short changed. Her waitress job she does pretty much on auto-pilot and full speed ahead because she needs the money and feels an unshakeable loyalty to Ma, the owner of the diner who gave her a job when she didn’t know how to do anything. Her detective work that she races about doing takes her into the company of criminals, cheats, dope-addicts, strippers, not-so-clean cops, and lots of ne’er-do-wells. Amidst all these she is also a peacemaker and a loyal friend that sees beyond human flaws and failing to help unstintingly when help is needed.

The secondary characters are a mottled lot in this entertaining story. Ms. Austin’s great descriptions of them bring out a unique type of humor and unusual outlooks on life and the conventional rules of society.

Roxy, Rose’s co-worker and bestie, with her blue hair and attention-getting attire, not to mention her lock-picking skills, has her own agenda but never fails to go help Rose when needed. Dane Harker, the lawyer; Sullivan, entrepreneur aka criminal; and Axton Graystone, Rose’s unfailing friend of many years who is also a dropout from high society, are all ever willingly to come to Rose’s aid when the chips are down and things get in a bind.

Janelle, in danger of going to prison for something she didn’t do, is Rose’s friend from college and is in desperate need of help since the cops consider her guilty and are doing nothing about searching for the true culprit.

Rose figures she has sold her soul to help Janelle but declares she will worry about that later. She will do all she can to help so Janelle can stay with her two children.

In this story, told in first-person, the reader is swept into a vicarious experience that includes visits to a strip club with graphic descriptions of the action; visits to Axton’s unique home where he keeps special brownies baked for his friend, Stoner, who lives with him and where he gives sanctuary to Rose’s friends who are in harm’s way—BIG time; and visits to Ma Ferguson’s diner during a time when Ma wages war against her competitor Rudy that she feels is horning in on her territory.

Last Diner Standing is an adventure in reading I might have missed if I had not branched out from the type stories I usually read. It is a story I will not soon forget. Although the language and the some of the actions are crude, they seem to fit in with the characters and the environment they function in. The characters’ loyalty, humor, and non-judgmental attitudes create resonating themes throughout this mystery. I really did get a surprise about who the “bad person” turned out to be. How Rose saves the day is fantastic—woven in so subtle and natural.

Last Diner Standing is a memorable story that I stayed up late to finish because Ms. Austin kept me totally in the story from start to finish.

Ms. Callahan has a talent for writing stories with lots of action in them. The world she has created with dragon shapeshifters stays consistent and solid in the books of the series. All the dragons have different talents which makes the story even more interesting. Her romances keep your attention, too.

She makes her main character in this story, Tania, a strong young woman with an independent streak. She tends to stay away from men. That doesn’t work too well when she gets captured by dragons. There are a couple of women at their compound but the rest are all men…

The author weaves a tale of dark and light. The Razorbacks want to control the world. The Nightfuries protect women and fight the Razorbacks. Ms. Callahan makes the wars ugly and with painful cost, as I believe dragon battles would be. With how tough she makes all her characters, you can tell that she was a tomboy in her youth and played hockey with the boys. She doesn’t believe in wimps.

This is the third installment in this series and while each book can stand alone, I have enjoyed reading all the tales. Here’s your chance to see how Tania enters the dragonworld and how she adjusts. I have the feeling the next book will about her younger sister and which Nightfury chooses her, but I could be wrong. I will be watching for the next in the series to find out.

An immortal with the capacity to love or is he just kidding himself?

I’ve read quite a few paranormal stories and lots involving vampires. This one threw me for a loop. The concept is intriguing. Fryar feeds off humans giving in to their inhibitions. He wants them to be bad and go with their innate sexual feelings. Its interesting in a devil-made-me-do-it sort of way and I was interested enough in the unique idea to read this.

This is where I’m confused. I wanted to like both Fryar and Deana. And being a romance, I expected them to have a happily ever after. I didn’t get that with this book. There’s a disconnect. The feelings aren’t so much of love and romance, but more sexual attraction. And for a book to be labeled as sensual, I never expected to see a particular word for women’s genitals in it. I’m sure some readers wouldn’t be expecting it as well and might object. Maybe labeling it “hot” instead of sensual would work better, especially with the focus on sex.

Another thing that detracted from the read was the many editing errors. Just a little more work and this could be a tighter, more exciting work. There are areas where the story is told to me rather than being shown to me and quite a few times where the words weren’t spelled correctly.  I wanted to like this book, but when I struggled to get into it, that made the read more difficult.

But I have to say I did enjoy Deana. She is a good foil for Fryar. She’s everything he wants, but just a tad out of reach.  If you want a paranormal with provocative overtones and a unique plot twist, then this might be the read for you.  The author certainly shows promise with her interesting take on vampires.

When Katie receives a call from Courtney with bad news, she immediately flies to Seattle to be with her. Dusty goes in search of Frank to see about righting this terrible wrong. Upon discovering Katie can’t go back but he can, Dusty eagerly confronts their past, but quickly finds out it’s not as easy as he thought. Getting Katie to fall for him all over again is a challenge he didn’t expect. Finding out the identity of Frank was even more surprising.

There are problems inherent with a time travel story. First and foremost you don’t want to tamper with history . . . you never know what is going to happen. Secondly, if the time jumps are not too far from the character’s current day, it can seem very confusing as to where they are (current or time-jump). Most time-travel I’ve read has their characters jump very far into the past or into the future to take care of most of these problems. Not this one. Not only are the time jumps into recent past (with 20 years or so), but the characters go back into their own timelines. . . multiple times!

So, that prepares you for the initial confusion. Not only does Dusty return to a time in his life where he first meets his wife (and therefore has to attract her . . . again!), but he ends up having to do this several times.

At stake is the life of his wife’s best friend, Courtney. Dusty would do anything for his wife, Katie, including going back in time to change events for a “happily ever after” for everyone involved. When he gets the opportunity courtesy of “Frank”, the mysterious man who sent Katie on a time travel mission years before, Dusty jumps at it.

Despite not having a solid plan, and having to try multiple times, Dusty seems to enjoy some of his time back in college. He gets to enjoy meeting and wooing his (now) wife. Because he is married to her, they tend to jump into bed rather quickly. This is definitely the source of heat in this novel. There is no shortage of steamy interludes.

To eliminate confusing you in the review, I’ll just let you know, there are plenty of other hookups in this story. Plenty of descriptions of college partying. Plenty of raucous college life. However, the hottest and most detailed descriptions are the relationship between Dustin and Katie.

This isn’t an easy book to read. I found myself re-reading passages and highlighting things so that I could co back and check who was whom and who was doing what. Having said that, this is definitely the epitome of a “happily ever after”. It was satisfying in that respect, and well worth the (literary) ride. Readers who are familiar with the Twin Cities and the University of Minnesota may also find a unique connection to the story (as this is where Dusty and Katie went to school – and therefore the time travel takes place there).

I did not enjoy the actual conclusion of the story. Well, I should say, upon first reading, I did not enjoy the conclusion of the story. The upside to this is – as time passed, I found that the resolution was a little easier to understand and did give a unique flavor to the story.

So – in all, I have to give Dustin’s Turn a big thumbs up. It isn’t easy to read, and will make you think about it even when you aren’t actively reading it. But aren’t those qualities you truly enjoy in a book?

Only he needs to help of the mysterious Malea who shares his darkness and may be the key to his freedom from not only the Colony but from the voice.

Gryphon was everything you could ask for in a warrior until his trip to the underworld changed him. He is only a shell of the man he use to be and that is just unacceptable. There is something inspiring about his actions of leaving his fellow warriors to try to protect them. I enjoyed the fact that he was trying to find his sanity and discovered his heart in the quest. I could tell that he was still a caring man deep under the frustration and aggravation, and I am glad that Malea was able to see it as well.

Malea was a character that grew on me. At first I didn’t really understand her. I didn’t have the luxury of reading the previous story, which would have probably provided me with more insight. Even without previous knowledge I can understand why Gryphon was so fixated on her. While she spent most of her life running you can see the strength in her decision. Forsaken by both her parents she has had no other options put to run most of her life. When she could have quit and given up she still tried to hardest to survive on her own and not involve others. The mystery surrounding her added intrigue to the story and made me want to learn more. Once I learned more about her I knew she would play an important role in not only this story but in the series.

The relationship development as well as the antagonistic conflicts really moved the story along at a steady pace. Malea and Gryphon had to deal with personal problems, a budding romance, and daemons, hellhounds and gods around every corner. There were many occasions when I told myself I would only read for five more minutes than the next thing I know another hour went by because I was so caught up in the story.

This is a series I can see myself enjoying for years to come, so I hope the author keeps the Eternal Guardians coming.

In the classic dive novel, one of the main characters is after shipwrecks – or more accurately, sunken treasure: a very specific treasure. And treasure is most definitely at the heart of this one, but for far more reasons than money – this hunt is both close to the heart and quite possibly deadly.

At the start, we’re assured that handsome Chase Cohen can ‘remain focused on a purpose.’ In a way, he does, but his ‘purpose’ distracts him from immediate – and life threatening – situation. That error threatens his ruin in so many ways. So focused, yet easily distracted. We will discover this is consistent to his character.

Rachel – who when we first meet, seems not so much despondent as harsh and cold, is also deceptive. She’s burdened with guilt and stubbornly clinging to blame as well. However, the opening is so cleverly written, we as readers cannot help but sympathize with both the main characters, from the start.

Severed Threads connects on an emotional level almost immediately. The twists of the plot tangle one almost as quickly. Whatever treasure lies out there, it is luring more than just honorable salvage companies, and has interested more than pleasant little maritime museums.

Rachel is forced in a more active role …not because of some thought out plan, and not because she is finally swayed to a different point of view. No spoilers here! But the story takes a fast turn and suddenly Rachel is much more involved than she ever anticipated. We are clinging to the seats at this point, wondering if she’ll ever deduce what really happened… and if Chase’s undertaking will be the end of all of them. And Chase – true to form, almost misses the treasure, he’s so distracted by the moment.

Irregularly presented chapters from lesser characters interrupted the connection to the storyline in an annoying way – they furthered the story but seemed to bumble in, intrusively. The sizzle in this case was window-dressing.

Undoubtedly the high points of this story were: believable and interesting characters and the unpredictable story line.
