I was a little worried at first by the snippet of text before the start of the novel as it mentioned it being a ‘hick town’ which sounded a little too country for my tastes. However, this is as old school country as the novel gets. The action has ranches and middle of nowhere ranch activities but it is the people it focuses on and the people are far more interesting.

Through Amy’s eyes, Ms. Alward delves into Jack’s past and the exact details cannot be guessed until the surprise reveal near the end which clears up just why Jack can be so closed off and seems to have many different personalities (though they are all realistic).

Amy finds her place in life and work and becomes a character I could respect and enjoy to learn about much more than her original incarnation. Similarly, Jack becomes less stiff and more real and although the sex scenes are cut before and return after the event, the sexual tension between Jack and Amy is still enough to melt the snow around the ranch.

I was personally thrilled with the conclusion to the book above all else. Yes, the characters had grown in character and towards each other but the finale sums up everything important: ‘Happy?’ Yes, they are both happy. Put a huge smile on my face. Wouldn’t mind reading some more of Donna Alward’s tales, either.

This story dances around the two characters and their problems, many of which are simply perceptions, not reality. Communication is the key and it takes a while for trust to build and for the two to let down their defenses and talk about past hurts and why they act like they do. They both learn some things about themselves in the process.

I enjoyed reading this sweet romance with a western touch. I could relate to Lianne because I hate being controlled or having someone following me around all the time. I can also understand how hard it is to open your heart when death has slammed the door in the past. Ms. Daille does a nice job of showing the heartbreak and emphasizing the difference the right relationship can make for you. What seems like it might turn into the standard secret-baby story becomes something else instead and that makes for a pleasurable experience.

I would have liked it better, though, if the author had fleshed her characters out a little more. Jason and Kara seemed rather one-dimensional and that made the story too sentimental for my taste. A few faults or a harder edge to the hero and heroine would have made them more like real people. I also didn’t like the way the author told us about the characters’ emotions rather than showing us. Various emotions rolled, slithered, pummeled, swirled, and balled up in the characters, but no matter how vivid the telling, it’s not as effective as showing. As a result, the story seemed to only scratch the surface of the characters and their stories at times, rather than bringing them to life.

Overall, though, it was still an entertaining and satisfying read. So if the holidays have you wishing for a sweet romance where a character’s heart might just grow three-sizes in a moment, then Snowbound with the Soldier is just what you’re looking for.

Although I am often skeptical how a retold story will turn out, in general I like reading the classics retold. There is something reassuring in the familiarity of the plot, in the idea of knowing how a story will end and that the hero and heroine will find their happy ending. I am skeptical because I wonder, “what if the retelling is so bad that it will spoil my love for the original classic in question?”. Fortunately, Unleashing Mr. Darcy was a fantastic read and Ms. Wilson has done a great job.

The story has some similarities with the original classic tale, foremost are the characters. There is Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth’s sister and Darcy’s friend, the grim aunt, and of course, villains. Elizabeth and Darcy are still full of pride and prejudice. Ms. Wilson also chose to put some memorable scenes in the story but with a twist. More or less, that is where the similarities stop and the difference begins. Elisabeth became American, some new characters are introduced, some well known characters’ roles are diminished and some characters’ names are changed. The author also decided to add a lot of steamy kisses, one lovemaking scene and a lot of sweet dogs in the story. These additions spiced it up and made it more unpredictable, which I liked a lot. What I especially loved about Unleashing Mr. Darcy is that the story provides the reader insight in both Elizabeth and Darcy’s standpoint and I was so happy that I could finally see what is on Darcy’s mind.

Reading Unleashing Mr. Darcy created a multitude of different emotions in me. I laughed (during charming Elizabeth and Darcy’s conversations), I cried (when love was not returned),and I wanted to punch some characters (when injustice was done). All in all I really enjoyed it, and when I read the last sentence I was truly sad because it ended.

As a true fan of Austin’s Pride and Prejudice, it is pretty obvious that I was not disappointed with this particular retelling of the story. I am so happy that I read it and that it made me want to re-read and to watch all the TV and film adaptations of the original one more time.

This was my first foray into stories by Linda Warren and I completely enjoyed it.

It’s a little suspense and a lot of romance, though I was expecting a more even spread between the two based on the blurb. The focus of this story is the characters more than the plot, though the plot is solid enough. Really what makes it most enjoyable is watching the characters, main and secondary, interact with one another. While the villains were a bit clichéd and completely evil, they served their purpose.

I thoroughly enjoyed Pop and Stu. They were awesome, funny in places and very, very wise. I liked our hero, and watching him struggle with having feelings for Myra while being engaged to another woman was intriguing. He is, at his heart, honorable, so it was tortuous for him. I do wish it had been a more difficult choice in the end; I think the author made it too easy by making his fiancee less than admirable at the conclusion. I would have liked to see him choose Myra over an equally admirable woman. It would have made that decision much more interesting.

I really enjoyed Myra. She’s a no-holds barred kind of woman who lets nothing stand in her way. I’m not sure I would have had the conjones to do what she ended up doing to find the baby. Her heart is huge, her courage even bigger and she’s a neat lady. It’s no wonder why Levi is unable to turn away from her again, despite their difficult past.

I think there must be a story prior to this one about some of the other characters we meet in passing. While it didn’t lessen my enjoyment of the story, I felt like it would have been richer if I’d read the other one.

All in all, A Texas Child was a good story that touched my heart in many ways. I’d absolutely pick up a book by Linda Warren again, and will most likely hunt up the one I’m sure preceded this one.

Hailey has the people around her thoroughly convinced she’s got it all together, because she’s the only one she’s ever had that she can depend on – but one person knows the truth.

Then the author throws Gage and Hailey together and the fun begins. There is a mix-up in assumed identities in the beginning which was a great hook. I was wondering how they’d figure it out and what their reaction was going to be. Then there was the contest. Not only was it amusing but what happens in the restaurant was H.O.T. As the hero and heroine rise to the occasion to meet the challenges set before them, they start learning about each other and opening up about important milestones in their lives. That is when the story found its heart. Sex is fine, and those scenes are of course well written because Ms. Weber is very good at writing them, but what they learn about each other made the story much more meaningful and endearing.

Gage did not have a normal childhood. He didn’t know any different until Hailey. That threw him for a loop and I liked how the author had him process that and then take charge. I was very proud of the hero at that point. As for Hailey, her childhood was messed up in a completely different manner, but no less damaging. Gage pushed her, challenged her and got her in touch with her inner temper goddess, so much so that the results were astounding.

One of my favorite parts of the whole book was their discovery of what Christmas is really about and how Gage and Hailey took steps, some unconventional, to make the holiday their own.

Secondary characters are very important to this book but there are three main contributors. One of them showed great courage and in doing so, empowered Hailey to reach for her full potential. It was rather heady but scary too. It also raised the bar for being emotionally connected to the characters. There were two others that were in the beginning but I figured out later that they were throwaway characters – they got the hero and heroine where they should be on stage in the beginning and then they disappeared. And if I was supposed to be engaged with or curious about Gage’s brother, I’m not. As far as I know this is a standalone read, and not a segment in a series, and I’m okay with that.

Dialogue was fun and hysterical at times. I enjoyed how Hailey and Gage bounced off clever one-liners and zings at each other. The pace of the story was good and it kept my interest. The editing was clean and the plot was engaging. The wrap up for the happy ever after was adorable, romantic and satisfying.

Naughty Christmas Nights is a cute, sassy and entertaining story. The romance is solid, Gage and Hailey were fun to get to know and the conflict was light yet effective. This is the kind of book that’s easy to read, delivers plenty of smiles and laughs and makes a person feel good after reading it. Naughty Christmas Nights is a definite recommend.

Two stories in one book means twice the fun, the passion and the foibles and challenges that face two couples while falling in love.

The first story, The Prince She Never Knew is about the painful transformation from puppy love to adult love, from loving the exterior to discovering the passionate and complicated emotions of the person hidden deep inside.

It’s not a light-hearted romance but one that explores the pain and suffering of children when their parents are too into themselves and they forget to be parents, leaving the kids to find their own ways to deal with the emotional fall out. Leo pretty much walls himself off from everything and Alyse gives too much, almost like overcompensation. It’s how these two unlikely and hurt people, now adults, find their way to openly love and accept each other that makes this story so compelling.

The author captured the stiffness of Leo and the yearning of Alyse by using clever dialogue, descriptions and environment. Secondary characters were only on scene to reinforce the elements that made Leo as dysfunctional as he was. It was Alyse’s strength of character that saved them. She had better insight into what made the hero tick once he let her in. It wasn’t a lot but since the heroine hadn’t shunned emotion or personal involvement in her own life, she was better equipped to recognize what was really happening and then deal with it. Not that she didn’t feel emotional pain, she did and the writing made that abundantly clear.

Even though I thought Leo’s stubborn aloofness overshadowed the romance despite my understanding of why it happened in the first place, the romance’s progression was clearly shown. The story had elements and shadows of the past writing style of Harlequin romances but in this case, at least readers can get into the hero’s head and understand why he is the way he is. It gives a reader a chance to have empathy for his plight and a reason to want to him to have his happy ever after.

The Prince She Never Knew is a poignant romance with heart.

The second story in the novel is Kholodov’s Last Mistress which is another tale that explores the redemption of a tortured hero. When Sergei and Hannah meet it’s unconventional to say the least. The heroine is different than anyone he’s ever known and despite his best intentions to leave her be, he just can’t. She reminds him of something…or someone. It’s that tiny crack in time that fate drives a wedge through, making the hero face the man he’s become and open himself to the possibility that it’s not all he could be. Hannah makes all the difference – and it drives him wonky.

The author painted a clear picture of the kinds of people both Sergei and Hannah are in the beginning of the book. Ms. Hewitt used dialogue, descriptions of eyes, mouth and skin color to mark their emotions and the effect their words had on each other. The story is told from both points of view and is well balanced so a reader feels that they’ve got a handle on the characters’ personalities. In fact, I’d say that Sergei had a whole lot worse childhood than Leo did in the previous story. I also think the author did a better job of making me care for Sergei than the other hero. No matter what Sergei thought of himself, Hannah, with her Polly Anna attitude, had it right. And I agree with her. Ms. Hewitt wrote one of the most impassioned, romantic and amazing scenes in this entire two-book novel when Hannah stood up to him, and really opened her heart to him. When she asked him that one simple question, a reader could almost see the light bulb pop over Sergei’s head. Genius.

Another thing I enjoyed was seeing the transition and maturation of both the hero and heroine. They grew, changed and brought out the worst and best in each other. It was very much like Hannah and Sergei had to walk through fire, expunge all the burdens and perceptions they had of themselves and their backgrounds before they could go forth. It wasn’t easy and it certainly provided me with plenty of emotional drama that kept me flipping the pages. The best part is the end, when Sergei learned to trust, believe and to love and Hannah learned to recapture her sunny nature and balance her man’s newfound belief in himself. It was very poignant.

The best part was the ending. It came full circle and I thought the delivery was brilliant, clever and very sweet. Of the two books, Kholodov’s Last Mistress was my favorite.

If romance fans love reading Harlequins because they’re quick, interesting and fun, then rest assured these two stories deliver all of that. They’re not fluffy and brainless. No, these two explore tortured heroes and the women who lead them to salvation. It’s a showcase of love’s strength and perseverance and is worth taking the time to read.

This novella is a short treat. It’s a quick read because it flows so well, the pace is brisk and the plot is simply fun because its pages are rife with entertainment. The dialogue between characters was chatty, comical, and insightful or it just moved the plot along where it needed to be.

Everyone has a fantasy but not many have the courage, liquid or otherwise, to take the steps to make it come true. It’s also accurate that living a fantasy can have ramifications in the real world once the fantasy is over that may shock the socks one or both of the participants.

The author knows how to write some seriously hot sexcapades. There is no doubt in my mind that after the fantasy was over, both Luke and Gia should have had a hard time walking after the fact. I’m wishing that the number of ‘finish lines’ that Gia reached are possible because that is one amazing imagination if not. The things the heroine does to the hero are fascinating. As this book is a tale of fiction, I guess it’s to be expected that Gia is so responsive and unconventional. It sure made the hero happy.

The book starts off with sex – talking about it, thinking about it, planning and eventually having it. What makes this book a winner to read is the emotional fall out later on and the extreme steps Gia takes to try to sweep it under the rug. She didn’t count on getting her heart involved. What a mess. The author wrote some effective scenes that leave a reader in no doubt that Gia is in over her head. Yet, she’s a strong gal as a reader will come to know when she’s handpicked to be on a team project. It was a wonderful conflict.

Luke is perfect and initially, boring. That’s the point. When I first read about him, it’s surface only. As Gia gets to know him, when the author lets me into his head, is when the real Luke shines through. He’s a very naughty guy, full of confidence and yet showed himself to be willing to listen, to take chances and to admit when someone is right. Even when he didn’t know who she was at the time.

When the mystery is solved, in a most unexpected manner, I was thrilled. It was very Cinderella-like but Luke is not a lame, one dimensional prince. The story ends more like a happy for now but there’s a very strong tell that it will eventually become a full HEA. Only Gia and Luke know for sure. The only thing I am sure about is that they have fallen in love. Ms. Weber made it very clear because some scenes have them sounding like mooning puppies. I giggled at all the clever ways Gia fought it and cheered when Luke convinced her that what they found in Vegas wasn’t fantasy but wonderfully, beautifully, real.

Fearless is the perfect title for a story about busting out of your comfort zone and finding out the world offers more than you ever dreamed. It’s a book that has all the elements of romance and sizzling heat to make it fun. This is escapism at its most delightful. Try it and see.

While I called it typical, that’s what I want when I pick up a Diana Palmer story, I want a comfort read, something familiar that no matter the story I can still enjoy the feeling of falling in love in a charged atmosphere. My biggest complaint was the way things that your average reader knows from every day life were explained, basic things that I felt were extra and weren’t needed to further the story.

Dalton and Merissa are perfect for each other and fall in love in this situation that is charged with so much danger and emotion that only by believing in the power of love and their determination that no matter what they’ll work on their relationship is their love for each other believable. They are two characters I can see working together far into the future to make sure that their love comes first and are willing to fight for it.

It’s nice to read about an old fashioned couple and story that’s not fueled by sex to keep the story going. I think that’s why I recommend this and other Diana Palmer stories, because it’s nice to step back to a time where the characters and the sexual tension drives the story and not the sex.
