The Texter

Fallen homicide detective, Jack Slaughter, closed the door on the home where his perfect family had been brutally snatched from him. Moving across the city, he works as a private investigator to fund his own investigation into what happened to his family—who killed his little girl, Zoë, and where is his wife, Leah?

Every three month for the last three years, Jack receives a simple text telling him where he can find his missing wife. There’s a body at each location, but none of them are Leah.

Jack hates missing person’s cases, but they’re his bread and butter. He only takes the case to find Carl Boyd’s missing wife because the details of her disappearance closely match Leah’s. He hopes by finding Bonnie Boyd, he’ll find his own wife.

Following the leads in the Bonnie Boyd case, Jack discovers that for the last three years, someone has been killing women all over the city, a fact Jack’s ex-partner and still best friend, Ray Navarro, has neglected to tell him. The city has a serial killer and officials haven’t been able to find a single lead on the person they’ve dubbed The Butcher.

Could Bonnie Boyd’s disappearance be linked to The Butcher? More important, was Leah one of The Butcher’s victims? And could he have gone so far as to murder a child?

With every clue Jack weaves together, the more his own life unravels.

Meet ex-homicide detective Jack Slaughter who finds himself embroiled in a terrifying and deeply personal hunt for a gruesome lady killer.

Jack is a well developed character that totally gave me a closeness that made me feel compassion for his story, his sadness, his pain. Jack’s daughter, Zoe and his dog, Trax were killed and his wife is missing. Jack’s life has been in a downhill spiral. He left his home and his job as a well known and loved homicide detective. Lately he has been tormented by a killer who has been sending him text messages that contain the locations of women who have been killed. While dealing with all of this he has taken up doing P.I. work. Carl Boyd was given Jack’s name to help investigate his wife Bonnie’s disappearance. Let me warn you. You are in for a suspenseful treat! The author delivered three suspenseful story lines masterfully.

This is a good opener to the Jack Slaughter Thrillers. I enjoyed the beautiful description of the California scenery. The detailed description of the city and sights gave the story a vivid illustration for me. I love that the author’s description wasn’t so wordy or so detailed as to cause the story to drag. I admired Jack’s resilience and drive. His story was relayed in detail where it seems to have no resolution to his spiral of depression but he steps outside of his own pain to assist in finding a local serial killer and solving the case of missing Bonnie Boyd.

The case of the serial killer is solved. Jealousy, a sick sense of self pleasure drives the killer but with Jack on the case the murders didn’t go unsolved. The case of missing Bonnie Boyd I wasn’t sure who was behind her absence. Does Bonnie’s disappearance have anything to do with the serial killer on the lose? Mr. Boyd is looking pretty guilty to me. Did he have something to do with his wife’s disappearance? The spouse is always the first suspect – right? You will get the answers to all of your questions except for Jack’s personal case. Yes the author leaves us with a cliffhanger on this one but a story such as Jack’s can’t be wrapped up in one book. I am looking forward to reading more about him!

A warning to reader, the book does contain crude language and some of the murder scenes may be unsuitable for some. I enjoyed this story and look forward to reading the next book in the series. Highly recommended!

Wife. Mother. Breadwinner. Penelope Ruiz-Kar is doing it all—and barely keeping it together. Meanwhile, her best friend, Jenny Sweet, appears to be sailing through life. As close as the two women are, Jenny’s passionate marriage, pristine house, and ultra-polite child stand in stark contrast to Penelope’s underemployed husband, Sanjay, their unruly brood, and the daily grind she calls a career.

Then a shocking tragedy reveals that Jenny’s life is far from perfect. Reeling, Penelope vows to stop keeping the peace and finally deal with the issues in her relationship. So she and Sanjay agree to a radical proposal: both will write a list of changes they want each other to make—then commit to complete and total honesty.

What seems like a smart idea quickly spirals out of control, revealing new rifts and even deeper secrets. As Penelope stares down the possible implosion of her marriage, she must ask herself: When it comes to love, is honesty really the best policy?

I am not sure how many times I found myself teary eyed while reading this book. I’m sure many mothers will relate to Pen’s story. The mother carrying the weight while their spouse seem to have an easy role in the relationship.  With wonderful writing, a flowing, meaningful plot and characters that have such a personality I am sure many wives will also relate.

As an avid reader I come across many books. Some are okay and some I wonder how did they even got published. But this book is a treasure! This is one of those that you don’t find often, that many readers seek. This book offered the thrill of being taken through so many emotions that I can’t help but classify this as a “must read.”

How much do we really know a person? This is the question that Penelope Ruiz-Kar asked herself when she finds out her friend Jenny Sweet’s perfect life has been a facade.

After receiving this new revelation about Jenny, Pen starts to question her life and her marriage and she finds the courage to face her life’s truths instead of keeping the peace.

Pen reminds me so much of myself. Lost in a marriage, a working mother carrying a full load of life. Even though the stress level would increase for Pen it only made her humorous side show. I loved Pen and Sanjay’s love for one another. Both were open and welcomed the chance to open up, try things a new way and work on making their relationship better. Sometimes I think we get comfortable in the roles society creates that we don’t tweak the roles to fit our personal situations. Why does the man have to work and bring home the bulk of the income? Why does the mother have to tend to the children and keep up the house? Everyone’s marriage doesn’t fit this mold. Pen and Sanjay had the courage to reevaluate their relationship roles and execute changes that worked for them.

Penelope is a kind and lovable woman. She has two young children but she made sure to include Jenny’s daughter Cecily. I enjoy seeing the transformation of Penelope. At work she settled but she had coworkers around her that cared about her and knew she had what it takes to move up in the company. She has so much to gain and now her confidence level has a boost. I like how the relationship between Penelope and Matt turned out and Penelope had the courage to continue to speak the truth and not just what Matt wanted to hear. Though Penelope and her dad didn’t have the best relationship Penelope knew she must face the obstacles that has kept her and her dad apart.

This is a life-affirming, funny and delightful read that I highly recommend to readers who enjoy a well-written, satisfying story of humor but also one that deals with real life issues.

Monday Charles is missing, and only Claudia seems to notice. Claudia and Monday have always been inseparable—more sisters than friends. So when Monday doesn’t turn up for the first day of school, Claudia’s worried.

When she doesn’t show for the second day, or second week, Claudia knows that something is wrong. Monday wouldn’t just leave her to endure tests and bullies alone. Not after last year’s rumors and not with her grades on the line. Now Claudia needs her best—and only—friend more than ever. But Monday’s mother refuses to give Claudia a straight answer, and Monday’s sister April is even less help.

As Claudia digs deeper into her friend’s disappearance, she discovers that no one seems to remember the last time they saw Monday. How can a teenage girl just vanish without anyone noticing that she’s gone?

This book is told in the voice of teenager Claudia Coleman. The book does contain non-descriptive physical and emotional abuse of children that may not be suitable for young readers. Indication of abuse is given but details are not disclosed.

I loved Claudia and her complexity. I loved her dedication to Monday. Monday was her only friend, her other half, the one who gave her confidence and the one that kept her secret. Now suddenly alone, at first I thought Claudia was seeking Monday for her own selfish reason…to keep her secret from becoming apparent to all that she know but as I grew to know Claudia I came to see her love and commitment to her best friend Monday Charles.

I admit the layout was almost too confusing for me to follow. Chapters were labeled Before and After, and also Before Before and 2 Years Before Before so I was often confused about what time period I was reading. Even after completing the book I was still a little confused on the time line of things that happened. I hope that I received the full effect and understanding as the author intended. This non-chronological order did take away some of the enjoyment of reading such a wonderfully touching story.

It took too long to build the story. Yes I enjoyed the author’s writing and the difficult plot that she spelled out so gracefully but I think the story could have been condensed and several parts could have been left out and the book would have still been detailed enough.

This is a beautiful vision of friendship and family. Can someone truly be forgotten? Can the love of someone cause our faculties to shut down in order to protect us from something so horrific and painful? Claudia’s dedication to Monday is beyond admirable and showcases their amazing bond and the tremendous amount of love in their relationship. But to a point the love is also scary. So scary that Claudia’s love for her canceled out her from having other friends. Claudia isolated herself in this bubble with Monday and now we see how when that bubble burst the magnitude of the breakdown of Claudia’s world.

This book is so deep and thought provoking giving light to a cause that is such a melancholy sadness to young lives. Young lives that should have an unmeasurable amount of hope for their future.

This book did serve as a good book club conversation topic. We were all in agreement that the author’s writing style is very enjoyable and that Claudia is a well developed character whose story captured all of our hearts.

We also agreed that this is a story that needs to be read. The author’s boldness to take a underlying social issue of missing children touched our hearts and also gave us a point of view that isn’t often heard about when such issues are made known through the media. We got to see the point of view of those who are impacted by such an unsettling truth. The children who are abused have friends, they have teachers and school officials who care but are restricted on the actions that they can take. Sadly as with the case of Claudia, her voice went unheard to several but she did not give up and she did not betray her bond with Monday. Claudia felt guilty for living, for carrying on her life without Monday. We also got to read about Monday’s siblings and how their fear translated into silence. The voice that was missing was the abuser and how she came about to be so cruel and heartless to not only her own children but their father. This story also touched on the heartbreak of not being able to conceive but then there are women who are blessed to have offspring but they are the creator of physical and emotional pain for those that they birth.

This is a dark story with no happy ending. A story of those who live and their efforts to try to rebuild from the destruction that was so plainly hidden in sight. Even though confusing to me at times, the flashbacks in the story did help establish the relationships. The flashbacks plotted out early on in the story helped fill in the events at the ending. The author did a wonderful job with the plotting to pull off such a complex move.

This is a highly recommend to those who are age appropriate for such subject matter.

It’s 1971 and a horrible murder has occurred near the town of Breda in west Michigan. A young woman, Jane Lucas, has been dragged into the woods and stabbed. The letters ZOSO from the Led Zeppelin album have been written in blood on her waist, which leads the police to think it might be a cult murder. Suspicion falls on the commune located on a farm near the town. The shock and horror townspeople feel after that murder, though, are nothing compared to the shock and horror people feel when another murder and then another murder of the same type occur.

As each murder occurs, the level of fear in Breda intensifies, to the point that the townsfolk either flee the town, arm themselves to the teeth, or fall into an almost catatonic state of fear. The county sheriff, the state police, and even the FBI are baffled. However, Jim Leiden, a young man who runs a small grocery in Breda, finds a clue that may link all the murders together: The hanging of a man named Obadiah Kurtz that occurred in 1889. Jim researches the story and finds that the victims are descendants of the people who were responsible for hanging Obadiah. After Jim’s discovery, he’s in a race against time to try to get the police to believe him and find the murderer before he can kill the only person in the whole world who really matters to him: His beautiful fiancée Julie Veere, who happens to be one of those direct descendants!

The hanging of a man named Obadiah Kurtz that occurred in 1889…is a sentence that caught my “need to read” attention.

From the opening of the story, the reader knows about the curse cast on the town and people involved in the hanging of Obadiah Kurtz, so it’s no surprise when the curse goes into action. The reader knows it’s a descendent of the Kurtz family. But who? Will the police be able to catch the killer before anyone else in the town has to die? This is a interesting story but I think it could have been delivered a little better. There are moments we receive play by play details in some scenes but then not enough details where it was needed in some scenes. There was one killer but the author gave the appearance others were working with him.

There have been recent murders in the town. In such a small town the crowd of residents gather at the local neighborhood store to gossip and give their opinion on who is behind the murders. Store owner, Jim Leiden hears about the 1889 hanging of Obadiah Kurtz and thinks there could be something to the town’s legend. Jim starts his own investigation asking around town for descendents of Kurtz. The part that I find odd is that when Jim goes looking for family members of Kurtz. He meets Annie Kurtz Abilene and gets little information from her, but sits right in front of Roy Kurtz and when he finds out that Roy is a family member of Kurtz he doesn’t question him, he just leaves the bar in fear. Jim just didn’t seem to have the background or description of someone that would step so quickly into an investigative role to find a murder. He wasn’t described as the heroic type.

The book does contain coarse language. I did like the relationship between Jim and Julie and Julie’s love for her mother. I like that the author did give the murderer a voice in the story. It added some gruesomeness to the dialogue to give the good guy/bad guy balance versus just giving us the POV of Jim.

The ending was predictable and wrapped up very quickly. It took hours for Jim to drive from Florida back to Michigan but the catching of the killer was too brief and wrapped up very easily.  I appreciated the author tying up all the loose ends. I don’t want to stop a potential reader from giving the story the chance it deserves, as mine is only one opinion, and I would suggest to read because it does have a unique plot and the writing style is easy to follow.

Jacob has led a difficult life, born of a Comanche mother and a cavalry soldier. He serves as a cavalry scout with bravery and integrity, wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps. But when a commission in the Army is within his grasp, he learns there is something more important than ambition—his growing love for Ruth.

Can one forgive after suffering so much heartache? Ruth MacDonald lost her family and was later held captive by the Comanche tribe for two years. Later she was deceived by those she thought had her best interest at heart. She knows heartache very well.

This is a short novel but covers a lot. This story is about forgiveness, using caution when wanting to love and trust again but it also touches on a tough topic. Ruth is judged because she was held captive and is pregnant by a warrior of the Comanche tribe. Jacob Wells is a U.S. Cavalry scout that is looked upon as being beneath the other Army member’s because of his mixed race. Both had something in common and grew from that. They couldn’t help how they were formed or being held captive but they didn’t let that make them bitter. Their time spent together and the growth of their relationship help lighten the heaviness of the story. Their relationship brought a refreshing and sweet romance to the story.

Ruth is a strong character that held up under tremendous pressure. With her shattered heart from a horrific past event she opens up to trust only to be deceived. I did think Ruth was a little harsh at the end of the book. Even though she was hurt she didn’t have compassion for Nellie’s situation. All of the characters had it tough. Nellie and Captain Ezekiel O’Connor weren’t exempt. Their heart’s desire to have children only to be disappointed time after time tugged at my heart. Reading their story made me think about what I would do in either of the women’s circumstances.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I enjoyed the storyline and the two main characters Ruth and Jacob. I admire both for their strength and good will. I enjoyed reading their story and wanted their lives to have a happy ending. This is a well developed plot that not only hooked me but it drew me in to want to read book two in the series.

Is the ADA allowing his personal history with the Hudsons to influence his handling of the prosecution?

She’s the good girl who doesn’t normally like to rock the boat, but in what could be considered the worst of all timing, she is secretly dating a man and a woman, and both relationships are on a collision course. Given the problems her family is facing, now is not the right time for Desiree to introduce more drama to the mix, but she just can’t seem to help herself.

As if fighting for one son’s freedom and fending off the other’s betrayal isn’t enough pressure, Bradley is also in the middle of his own love triangle between his ex-wife, federal judge Jacqueline Hudson, and his current wife and jury consultant, Carla. He knows how much is at stake if his family’s drama spirals out of control, so he’ll do everything within his power to keep it all together and prevent his son from landing behind bars. With his trademark dramatic style, Carl Weber introduces readers to the Hudsons. Only time will tell if they can stand united, or if the legal dynasty of Bradley Hudson is about to come crashing down.

If I ever find myself needing a lawyer I can only hope to fine someone as famed and dependable as attorney Bradley Hudson. Not only is the Hudson family a family of attorneys but they each add in their own individual drama.

Carl Weber is well known for his writing about strong family units and this book is no exception. As always I enjoyed the author’s writing style and the plot is well developed and something fresh. It exemplifies strong personalities and a memorable family with plenty of trials. The characters are lively and bring a lot to the story. I get the feeling this was just a glimpse of their development and there will be more to come in future books.

This is not only a story of family but the bond and fight for one of their own. Young son Langston and three of his fraternal brothers are arrested for drug trafficking. The bond of brotherly love is tested and this story shows that under pressure that bond can unravel. The four young men endured a lot and their lives will forever be changed. Age old hurt and rivalry weigh heavy on Assistant District Attorney James Brown. He has it out for Bradley and will stop at nothing to hurt him and all that he loves. The secret that is being carried threatens to ruin a lot for a lot of people. I felt sorry for James to a point but at the same time think that he needs to be the bigger man and let the past hurts go and live his life.

The story is suspenseful. It’s a quick moving read but it doesn’t wrap up so nicely. The ending closed the case but left several relationships open and unanswered. Jacqueline, James, Perk, Desiree…all of the character pretty much didn’t have closure to their story. I’ve noticed a few editing issues in previous books by this author and this book has the same trouble. As a true fan I am still not disappointed. In my opinion the story is well executed, entertaining and has piqued my interest in future books.

This is a remarkable novel from a best selling author who knows how to give testament to a strong family bond. Highly recommended!

I enjoyed this book from page one until the very end. The author didn’t spend much time on the story of the individual husbands, but did a great job in giving details and developing each female character. The women each had their own individual lives apart from each other. Now add having to deal with the loss of their husbands during a recent robbery. The ladies know of each other but would not normally be in each other’s circle of friends. The plot is perfect. The writing is spot on. The characters are so well developed I formed a fondness for them.

I enjoyed the relationship between the women. They may have been at odds, may have even doubted each other at times but as time went on the ladies grew to know each other and started to look out for each other. The book is full of intense pressure on Dolly and the girls to keep their plans away from Harry’s rivals and also the police. Not only is there the next bad guy trying to take Harry Rawlin’s spot but Detective Inspector George Resnick has an agenda to take down Harry. Even after Harry’s death George is still adamant that Harry’s record is not so clean. Everyone is after Harry’s ledger. Harry’s detailed ledger is being used but not by the rival crimnal gang. Detective Resnick is willing to risk it all to prove that he is right.

This was a well-crafted novel that was fun to read and it also gives a surprise twist that I didn’t see. The women in this novel are at a vulnerable time due to loss of their husbands but the three together gain strength to pull off a heist just as well as any group of men.

The author told a well developed story in a detailed and suspenseful tale that I throughly enjoyed. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and after reading this book I can’t wait to see what other gems I may discover. This is highly recommended for those who enjoy suspense but also enjoy seeing smart and strong minded women in a leading role.

I feel sorry for Reggie’s wife, Ladette and their son, Thurgood, that they have to deal with such a sullen temperament. Reggie seems to not be aware of how his words can hurt but that will soon change.

This is a well written short tale that delivers a gloomy story of an unhappy man. I wouldn’t categorize the story as scary… more along the lines of disturbing. Starting with Reggie’s depressing and mean behavior, to his odd dream to the encounter with the man upstairs. For such a short story, the author’s words held my attention and drew me in. I felt sympathy for the characters. Sad that a father can’t see what good he has in his wife and son. A son that looks up to his father, but also seems to recognize that his father needs healing.

I enjoyed the author’s writing style and how she put so much into just a few pages. I also like the author’s use of uncommon words that gave the story a certain flare.

Tracy Johanson also knows the pain of loss on several levels. A genius with woodwork, he’s good at nearly everything except forgiving himself. With Tracy’s head at war with his heart, God is about to step in, and through Frankie, guide him onto a new path, a new future, and a blessed reconciliation with his estranged son in the most destined of ways …

A new and fresh beginning are the words that come to mind after reading Frankie Bonetti and Tracy Johanson’s story. Frankie is making a new start in a new location, new home, a new job and new relationships.

This is a pleasant read that I thought was a joy to read. Frankie is a widow trying to piece her life together. Her spiritual faith is strong and her love for people is even stronger. Frankie may be new in the neighborhood but she makes a home for herself and also happen to make friends very quickly. I like that the author displayed Frankie’s spiritual growth as well as her growth in standing for good and for fairness. Though she was grateful for her job she had to deal with a boss who wasn’t too pleasing.

I like that the author has a strong main character like Frankie who is inspiring to read about. Frankie’s life wasn’t perfect but she has a beautiful spirit of love and caring for others. I enjoyed seeing the building relationship between Frankie and Lilly and I am glad that Frankie and Tracy found love and companionship but I think their relationship moved too fast from friends to loving one another. Frankie’s attraction to Tracy was clear from the beginning but with her being recently widowed I would have liked for there to have been a longer friendship instead of the instant love.

The story contains life events for both Frankie and Tracy. Frankie was dealing with a controlling husband and now adjusting to life after his death.

Tracy is dealing with his son after his wife’s death. Frankie is a strong woman who loves people for who they are. She is considerate and looks to help others. I enjoyed reading Frankie’s story. The characters are wonderful, and for the most part developed and easy to connect to. I also found that the writing was, with a few exceptions, well edited.

I like how the author allows the characters to blossom into the best version of themselves. This is a sweet story that ends with love and happy endings.

Georgia Williams, a night nurse at Jericho Military Hospital, uses her skills nursing those in need, but who’s going to stand up for Georgia to mend her broken pieces?

I really enjoyed this story of love and romance between Georgia and Christian. Though their attraction was immediate and their relationship moved fairly quickly it was heart warming reading the two fall for each other. Christian, a disfigured burned marine, is a patient at Jericho Military Hospital and he is focused on healing and possibly doing another tour of duty until he lay his eyes on nurse Georgia. Christian is describe as a very very large man but he seem to be as soft and sweet as a lamb when it comes to Georgia.

Georgia has a lot going against her. Her religious family has shunned her for being an unwed mother. Her supervisor at work is always on Georgia’s back. Though she has a lot of people going against her, Georgia is handling things on her own. She is depicted as a strong woman and a fighter but she is also a lovable and caring woman. Georgia has dependable Mrs. Sheppard, her widowed next door neighbor, to watch her daughter Abby while she goes to work at the hospital. Georgia isn’t looking for a man or a relationship but that all changes when the immediate attraction is noted between her and Christian. Both are playing it safe until Georgia’s mean supervisor fires Georgia. Her losing her job ignites the flame between her and Christian. Friends of Christian and other patients at the hospital aid in getting Georgia and Christian together.

It was adorable the budding relationship of Christian and Georgia’s daughter Abby. Abby is so sweet in her tactics with Christian. It is obvious that she appreciates his height and willingness to hold her and pick her up.

Will Georgia be able to mend the relationship with her family and will they accept Abby and how she came to be in existence? This is a quick and enjoyable read that I enjoyed reading. The storyline was a little longer than I thought it needed to be but overall I still found enjoyment in the story.
