The details of Jamie McVey’s life and death were so vividly written that I actually googled him to see if this was based on a true story. It honestly felt like something ripped from the headlines of a small town newspaper. While it turned out to be fictional after all, this didn’t dampen my enthusiasm for figuring out what really happened to this ghost one bit. I was so interested in learning his secrets that I couldn’t stop reading.

I enjoyed finding all of the parallels that the author drew between Brian’s life in the present and Jamie’s life in the past. They had far more in common than I would have guessed, and many of their similarities were things that took some time to uncover. It was rewarding to see all of this slowly come together as Brian adjusted to life in his new community and began to explore the mystery of what really happened to Jamie.

The romantic subplot was handled beautifully. It definitely wasn’t something I was expecting to find in this tale, but I was pleased with how much time it was given to develop while all of the other storylines were going on as well. The characters involved in it had plenty of opportunities to slowly transition their friendship into a romantic connection. Given everything else that was happening in their lives, this was the perfect decision. I must also say that I really liked the idea of them being a couple! The fact that they were so well suited for each other as far as their personalities and interests go only made the idea of them falling in love even more appealing.

The Ghost of Jamie McVay is something I’d recommend just as earnestly to adult readers as I would to the middle grade audience it was originally intended for.

All the wildlife rescuers admire her passion and determination, knowing deep in their hearts that she is going to be one of the special ones that could make a huge change in the laws.

Speaking of those wildlife centers, I was impressed how friendly and welcoming they were, even though they had never met Luna in person. They also enfolded Ned into their group, even though he was kind of being dragged against his will. One of my favorite moments was when the Pennsylvania Wildlife Center decided they would take the risk to bring Mars’ mate Banshee to Canada also. I learned that bonded eagles do not do well when separated as shown by Banshee not eating. The center knew it was taking a huge risk but knew it was the only thing to do. Again, these people humbled me with their strength and conviction that all life was precious.

I would’ve liked more about Luna’s past, as much of it is shadowed and she has horrible nightmares where she wakes up fighting. The reader is not told directly what happened to her in the foster system, although there are some small references. Then there is the relationship she has with Ned; it is messy and complicated, but he knew how he felt for her even though she seemed to keep pushing him away.

This is a wonderful story filled with all sorts of different characters that bring life and interest into the story. I got to learn just how hard it is for the Wildlife Centers to function with little budgets, even though they have a collective big heart. I saw just how much an animal can bond with a person, knowing that person loves them unconditionally and that love is given back ten-fold. The reader is also given the flip side of conservation by watching Adam build up fancy hotels and resorts in land that is increasingly threatening the wildlife. There are thinly veiled political statements here about not stealing the land from the animals, too.

If you’re looking for a book that will make you think, but also features some great romance, then this might be the book for you.

Things change for her dramatically though when she realises the man she has fallen for is a werewolf. There is something for everyone here – mystery, kidnap, fights to the death, and LOTS of sex.

The writing style is different from others, and I didn’t particularly like the long internal monologues and reviews of what “whoever” had done and when. However, they are part of the story and it needed them to be able to move forward. I just found them to ramble on and they became a detraction from the interaction between the characters themselves.

All in all, though, this was a very good story that shows that life isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be, even if you think you have it all. There are some great characters in here that I would love to learn more about. So, yep, recommended by me.

At first, Tom, the hero, sounds like a stuffed and starched shirt – rigid, set in his ways and overly sure of himself. That is until he utters the most un-starched comment, “I’ll be your oyster.” In a very short amount of time, Ms. Kleypas provided me the measure of the man, so I’m well aware his statement is wholly out of character. That is also my ‘aha’ moment when I realize that the person doing the most growth, who is going to experience the most changes in circumstances and new awareness, is going to be Tom. My first thought after the first chapter? This, is going to be fun.

If you are a reader who likes to judge a book as readable based on the blurb, a word of caution – I do not agree with the ‘chase being over’, nor that about Cassandra’s heart. I saw the reason for the chase present itself in the first chapter, and even after he received her hand in matrimony, it continued but not quite as the blurb leads you to believe. I perceive it’s not the heroine’s heart but the hero’s. Tom has a dearth of feelings, but Cassandra has an overabundance which will prove to be the hero’s undoing. The results are eminently readable, enjoyable, entertaining and positively delightful. Bazzle’s character is the litmus test – the evidence that the heroine is reaching and thawing Tom’s frozen heart. The twists and turns of their unusual courtship is pure romantic entertainment and very well written.

As for the enemy, again the blurb makes it sound like there’s going to be danger, as in – there might be spies, skullduggery or serious and menacing peril. No one is out to kill anyone, thank goodness. There’s nothing dark or stressful about Chasing Cassandra for which I am grateful. The external conflict puts the heroine in jeopardy; that is true. However, the form it takes is something historical romance readers will appreciate and accept because they understand the gravity of the threat. A nail biting event does exist and it revolves around Bazzle. That scene is where I was truly worried because I’d come to care about his character. How it is resolved gives me great satisfaction, and even while I’m writing this review I am still remembering and appreciating Tom’s actions. He’s a wonderful hero.

Tom eventually seduced Cassandra. Although it was spicy and well written, it also makes me grin from ear to ear. Why? Because I think he was seduced right back, and it confused him. It messed with his will-ordered and efficient mind and I liked that effect. It made the hero approachable, likeable and worthy of the heroine. I especially enjoyed the moonlight waltz. There’s something to be said for shoes that don’t fit.

I was entertained by the contract that Tom and Cassandra came up with. I liked how the author used it to benefit her characters while at the same time giving readers a greater insight into the couple. His reference to ‘tablemats with holes’, and what he thought of fringe, made me giggle. It certainly had me liking him all the more.

Chasing Cassandra was a perfectly delightful read. I have been a bit stressed lately and I can honestly say that the world fell away once I got into the story. I was able to forget the seriousness of life and escape to love, happiness, hope, optimism and laughter. I was treated to a well-rounded happy ever after with characters I really liked. I can easily recommend this a great read.

I felt it was mentioned a few too many times, ramming the thought home instead of allowing it to flower.

On the positive side, the writing, in general, is brilliant, giving you plenty of clear descriptions so you can see what is happening in your head. The characters have their roles to play and even manage to surprise you along the way. I did love the ending and thought it perfect for this story.

A really good story with supernatural hints that I can definitely recommend.

Sloan is smart and witty and although our lives are nothing alike, I found it easy to relate to her and her struggles.

I didn’t like George Solar much at first, but a lot of that is due to the fact we’re in Sloan’s point of view and she didn’t like him at all. She wonders, so of course, I did, too, what he’s up to and if he has an ulterior motive. As the story progresses and you get more of his history, his personality starts to shine. In the end, I wound up really liking him a lot. He is good at keeping secrets but seems to only do it out of necessity. It drives me nuts when one half of a team won’t tell the other why they’re doing something. George was as up front with Sloan as he could be and I appreciated that.

The Girl Beneath the Sea is an action-packed mystery that takes you all over Florida in search of answers. From the beginning to the end, I was on the edge of my seat, not wanting to put this book down. I’m excited to see what case George and Sloan handle next as well as where Sloan’s relationship with Run goes in the future. Since the sequel isn’t due out until next year, in the meantime, I’m going to have to check out the author’s other novels.

He was there for Miri as she tried to come to terms with the horror. He tends to use humor and his addiction to coffee as a way to help himself and his partner. It’s rather funny about his coffee addiction as it runs through the whole novel. He has a great rapport with all the first responders since he has been working so long and knows how to work with them.

With each call, the reader gets to see how hard it can be for EMT’s and how underfunded they can be with simple comforts that they do not have. Most of their stuff in the bunkhouse came from the trash. Each call shows us a different part of Miri and Marsh, which also shows us how much we should appreciate them. They also must face horrible issues in their personal lives. For example, Miri has a sister that is dying from leukemia and when she got a call from her mother that her sister didn’t have much longer to live, she was lucky enough that a flight crew that was going to take a patient to Calgary died so they agreed to take her there.

For Marsh it was a homeless man that he had a rapport with as he often responded to calls for various ailments when Reggie gets placed in jail. He even gave Reggie a card that had some money for coffee or food. He seemed to understand Reggie better than most, always willing to listen to him and not get mad when those fake calls come in. The author shows us what is going on in Reggie’s mind and we can tell that he needed psychiatric help more than anything else.

The only thing that I would have liked to see is maybe getting rid of some of the scenes that feature Bryce, a mountaineer that is well known for taking beautiful pictures. There were times when I thought scenes with him slowed things down and some unnecessary details could be removed.

This is a story that everyone should read to understand just how hard EMT’s work and how ill treated they can be. They are under constant pressure from the people upstairs along with dealing with difficult patient’s and horrible situations. Remember that if you ever need to be in a situation where an EMT is needed, please make sure that you tell them how much you appreciate what they are doing.

She really gets into Suzie’s head, showing the reader a look at the struggles and reasoning as she undertakes her journey, fleeing from her mom, to her father’s in fear of her mother’s boyfriend. I easily felt like I knew Suzie, like I was right there, cheering her on! I felt the author’s use of perspective, with the mother oblivious, Suzie a frightened teen, and the other characters falling somewhere in the side-lines, paired with the vast knowledge the author shows of equine behaviors, or horsemanship, this was both an highly entertaining and even educational read.

This story can likely be enjoyed by all ages, though it’s written for the YA group.  It’s both well written and easy to follow, making it easy to read quickly, and much harder to put down!

Harald and Selia are now married and taking up residence in Mercia– far from the king’s court and, they hope, from the various intrigues and machinations that thrive in political turmoil. Unfortunately for them (and fortunately for us) things do not go as smoothly as they would like.


Once again, I love the characters – especially Harald, Selia, Ravya, and Erral. They are wonderfully complex and multi-dimensional. It’s interesting to see how they overcome their pasts and strive to become the people they want to be.

It’s obvious the author has done his research, and I really appreciate all the small things he does to flavor the story, the small tidbits of the daily life of the period and the scattering of foreign words (clearly explained by the context of the sentence).

The story is fast-paced with enough twists and turns to hold the reader’s attention. Wonderful job, Mr. Pettersen! I can hardly wait to read further adventures in The Atheling Chronicles.

But there is a condition, Cameron cannot interfere and change the past, for if he tries to save Candice, the journalist, he could prevent the professor’s grandparents from ever meeting. However, Cameron is determined and willing to take chances.

The style of the writing is straightforward and honest with the occasional humorous undertones mixed in. John A. Heldt is a skilled writer whose words flow naturally and bring the characters and the setting to life. This book is filled with all the cultural events we hope to see in the 1920s, both the good and the bad. It’s great to get a front seat into these things, but some will make readers cringe. Afterall, the twenties had their dark side, and this is explored here.

Readers are sure to enjoy the banter between Cameron and Candice. There are some surprises built in as well. This is another John A. Heldt book that doesn’t disappoint.
