A bargain deal on a safari + one dead body = An adventure no one could plan for.

Naomi and her estranged sister are off on a trip of a lifetime—an African safari, a bucket list trip for Naomi on which she got a last-minute deal. Naomi thinks traveling with her sister will be the worst part of her African safari until she finds one of their fellow travelers, the unlikable Dr. Higgins, dead. She gets more adventure than she bargained for when she starts investigating what she thinks is murder but the luxury lodge says was a tragic accident. She only has a few vacation days, and a few game drives, to find the killer.

What a fun start to a series– I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where the author goes with this.

I enjoyed the main character, Naomi, and it was great fun watching her interact with the rest of the characters on the safari trip she was able to score – especially with her sister as they are together for an extended time for the first time in many years (their dad “got Naomi” in the divorce while the sister stayed with Mom).  They were not estranged as much as not as familiar with each other as sisters who are raised together can be. I really hope Charlotte plays a part in the rest of the series….she was a good foil for Naomi.

I can understand Naomi wanting to know what happened and not just brush things under the rug. Once she figured out that there had been a murder, her innate sense of justice would not just let it be swept under a rug.  Besides, the internet was down…what else is a girl to do?

The descriptions of the safari itself were so much fun to read and, even though, it had never been on my bucket list before, I found myself wishing I could go on a trip like that (minus the murder…. I think).

I hope that some of the other characters also make appearances in future books– especially Jack. I have to admit, he was one of my favorites of the secondary characters.

I’m looking forward to seeing what other adventures Naomi and Charlotte get into.  Well done, Ms. Kennedy.

Lanyon goes to Earth to respond to a job offer and finds the entire situation is far more complicated than he originally thought. While this is the first story in the series that I’ve read I found it fairly easy to pick up and follow along. Most of the Sci-Fi terminology and inter-planet travel was understandable and I enjoyed the fact what seemed like a simple job quickly turned on it’s head.

It took me a while to really grasp and understand Lanyon’s character. I could accept this, as the book is seventh in the series, but I did find myself (particularly at the start) wishing the author had given a bit more detail and fleshing out of Lanyon’s character and motivations since I didn’t have any of the previous history of the other books to fall back on and simply know or accept some of his actions and desires. After the first few chapters when a number of different plots began to converge the larger picture began to clear for me and I really started to enjoy the story – and Lanyon’s character – a great deal more.

I enjoyed the quick pace of the story, finding that the plot progressed smoothly and it helped the book roll right along. Readers who enjoy a complicated plot with a number of moving parts should find this full length story really fits the bill. With a number of different species and planets all woven together I feel this detailed Sci-Fi world and set of characters should really fit the bill to fans of this genre.

Fast moving and with strong and interesting characters, this is a good and engrossing read. Recommended.

The Spider will find his queen and a whole lot of trouble.

Spider is one character who has intrigued me for some time. The story of Spider and his love is one I have been waiting for quite some time. And, the wait was well worth it. Spider is quite a bit older than Luciana. And reading this story was a blast.

Luciana is a bit timid and shy, but strong as well. She trusts Spider. That says a lot about her character especially when the story of her past comes out.

Spider is quite different than most of the members of the MC that I have read so far. I love that. The heat and chemistry are present between both of them as well as Spider’s patience for Luciana. He is very much in tune with her and her needs.

It is a short read but it has scenes of violence and miscarriage that some readers may not like. As well as talk of rape.

That being said the climax and prologue surprised me but reading this story was well worth everything.

This is a full length novel which gives it time to go into detail about Tracy’s past, how she knows Sam, how Sam knows Mason and Dylan, etc. It isn’t rushed in any way which made it a delight to read. It was great to see not only Tracy grow and thrive, but Karen too. Dylan also has to have his epiphany and ‘Come to Mama’ moment, so having time to read about each character without feeling like it is rushing to the end was wonderful.

The world-building is excellent and the characters likeable – apart from those you’re not supposed to! The author definitely researched the emotional and psychological states of an abused spouse and was able to eloquently give that information to the reader without it being an info-dump.

This book does share some page time with Claire, Bryce, Joshua, and Kaiden from book one, Owned by the Alphas, but you don’t have to have read that for this one to make sense. This was a brilliant read, thoroughly enjoyed by me, and highly recommended.

He knows enough to keep his hands off someone as beloved by the locals as Evie, but there’s something about her that calls to him—no matter how badly he burns to make her his.

Don’t think Evie hasn’t noticed the powerful Russian mafia boss who makes her favorite diner a regular stop. How can she not? He’s as hot as his reputation is dangerous. But when a turf war between Sergei and a rival brings violence to her doorstep, Evie must come to grips with loving a man who will do anything to defend her…or walk away from her best chance at a happily-ever-after of her very own.

“She was his weakness. But she was also his redemption.” They should avoid one another at all costs but that isn’t going to happen. Once he has a taste, she’s his to defend but also his to cherish. He’s more than capable of both.

I’ve read a bunch of Russian mafia stories and each author has their own take on what it’s like to be part of “the family”. Some go super dark where women are essentially owned. That can be interesting but I think I prefer Ms Morgan’s view. More of an old school “we just want to own the neighborhood and collect on debts, while not-so-secretly skirting just outside the law” trope.

Don’t get me wrong, Sergei isn’t a good person. He’s an unapologetic criminal but he’s also loyal and protective of his family. When he declares Evette and Emerson to be family, it’s a big deal and I loved how he integrates them into his life. What was equally awesome to watch was how his personality changed because of Evette and Emerson. She’s pretty tough for a ray of sunshine!

This isn’t a paranormal book but there’s definitely a sense of magic in the chemistry that flows between Sergei and Evette. It was flavored and tangible. Real and powerful.

You can’t have a mafia story without there being someone who thinks they’re bigger and badder, or at the very least smarter, trying to make a name for themselves. Bad idea when the real big bad has something to protect. Don’t underestimate Sergei or his Bratva family. There literally isn’t much these guys wouldn’t do to protect what they consider “Mine”. I can’t wait to read Kir and Roman’s books!

Readers who love the dark side just a little too much should absolutely pick up a copy of His To Defend. Hot protective men who live for family and love with every fiber of their being. They’ll make a girl want to take a walk on the dark side, too.

Belle is blind but loves being independent. Nevertheless, when it came to her friends it was different. Being blind means she would need help walking in places she is not familiar with. When friends ask to go to a club that she is not familiar with she said yes. That club is where she met Diego.

Belle is sweet and giving. The opposite of Diego who is an alpha to the core, until it came to his marriage it seems. He was a big bad mafia capo until it came to the heroine. What made me read this twice was because their talks were normal. Really normal. With little chemistry. I think it was curiosity that made him stop and talk to her. I kept waiting for him to break the engagement from the other woman.

His Secret Sin was exactly what it said. Belle was his secret until she was not. That brought hell into their world.

This story is about a relationship between a crime boss/capo and a regular woman, and it’s enjoyable since their relationship went through highs and lows. At the end, they come out better than before. The book is a good read for those who want something a bit different.

I enjoyed a story which has a mild-mannered amateur detective in the plot. I also thought the other characters were interesting. However, much of the interaction between the characters was very subtle so it took me a while to discover what the relationship was between them.

I used the word subtle previously and I think it’s the right terminology to use for the whole story. This was a plot that you really had to pay attention in order to create your own mental image of what was happening. I wouldn’t say any of this was bad; more like a mystery for intellectuals. Or maybe you might call it a “softcore” mystery genre.

I’m not familiar with the LeHane books and I must admit I was a little confused at first. I think it was because there were a lot of side stories or subplots going on at the time. Maybe it was more that I was not used to LeHane’s writing style or possibly it’s not wise to read this as a stand-alone.  Nonetheless, it was still an enjoyable book worth my reading time.

This is Book 3 in a series titled “The 42nd Street Library Mysteries” . Con Lehane also has another series called “Bartender Brian McNulty Mysteries”. Be sure to check them out.

Surprised by an unexpected visitor from her past, she resolves to return to her ravaged homeland to reclaim her daughter and uncover her beloved’s fate, whatever the cost.

From the start of This Terribly Beauty we are effortlessly transported into Bettina’s life and her past. Ms. Schuman offers of the story of a life confronted by challenges; those large challenges involving World War II, as well as personal challenges, made by the main character. Bettina’s circumstances are often out of her control, but her early decision to follow her heart, her judgments and her eventual resolution are all understandable.

We, as readers, are drawn in and find ourselves sympathizing even with choices we might not have made ourselves. It is easy to share outrage, loss and conviction. She sees her world as if through the lens of a camera and more and more becomes clear. Love both captivates the main character and traps her.

The author writes her prose with immediacy; with an in-the-moment quality that is hard to describe. At the outset, I thought to find fault with it, but progressing, found myself drawn in, so the style disappeared and all that is left is story and the emotions.

Background details seem to emerge in almost poetic turns of phrase, for example: “…there’s an unruly rosebush twisting its way over the step…” and ” …memories live in each closet.”

The synopsis really does this book no service, leading me to expect a rather abrupt drama, rather than the thoughtful and heartfelt life’s journey This Terrible Beauty offers. Five solid stars and I highly recommend you add This Terrible Beauty to your “must read” list.

This is the third book in the Captivating Captains series and I do believe this one is now a joint-favourite with book four – The Captain and the Best Man. Set back in 1817 and a world of Theatricals and Balls, it is full of the rich and famous, intrigue, and a dash of mystery. I wouldn’t class this as erotic although there are some steamy moments.

The world-building is clear and concise, detailed enough to give you the important parts without bogging you down with anything unnecessary. The characters themselves, whether they are fair or foul, all play their parts to perfection.

This was a delightful read with the perfect ending, although if I’m honest, I will admit to wanting more – just so I could see if their life together was as idyllic as I have imagined it to be. Absolutely recommended by me.

Around the World in 50 Years is the inspiring story of an ordinary guy who achieved two great goals that others had told him were impossible. First, he set a record for the longest automobile journey ever made around the world, during which he blasted his way out of minefields, survived a serious accident atop the Peak of Death, came within seconds of being lynched, and lost three of the five men who started with him: two to disease, one to the Vietcong.

After that, Albert Podell set another record by going to every country on earth. He survived riots, revolutions, civil wars, trigger-happy child soldiers, voodoo priests, jihadists, robbers, corrupt cops, and Cape buffalo. He traveled through every kind of earthquake, cyclone, tsunami, volcanic eruption, snowstorm, and sandstorm that nature threw at him. He ate everything from old camel meat and African field rats to dung beetles and the brain of a live monkey. And he overcame encounters with crocodiles, hippos, anacondas, giant leeches, flying crabs―and several beautiful women who insisted that he stop this nonsense and marry them.

Around the World in 50 Years is a remarkable and meaningful tale packed with some of the most memorable, frightening, and hilarious adventure stories you have ever read.

Has anyone been to every country on earth? Albert Podell has, and he wrote about it. He started his travels as a young man and finished them in his twilight years. He left the most dangerous and harrowing countries for last.

The subject matter alone is fascinating. Readers get glimpses of other countries and cultures through the eyes of an American traveler. Podell doesn’t describe all 196 countries here. He mainly goes into his wild adventures in the countries where he encountered real trouble, whether of the natural type—wild animals or extreme desert conditions in Africa—or the human type—dealing with wars and radical politics.

There are only a few pleasant experiences described within these pages, and the author’s words offer great insights into these other lands. One will appreciate getting a peek into how so many other people live. Podell is honest, and his interpretations are laced with humor. This book is not for kids though. There is adult content, telling readers how it really is.

Since it took him fifty years to do this, Podell sometimes updates readers on the situation in certain countries. He also had to backtrack at times because new countries were created or disappeared. One can often feel his stress and surprise as well as feel relieved for him when he barely escapes one life-threatening predicament after another.

This adventurous tale will very likely give readers in certain places a whole new appreciation of where they live. It will make them grateful for what they have and maybe even make them want to stay home. It’s an eye-opening experience going along with this author on his world-wide journeys, and I’m glad I read this book.
