This is a well-written, fast-paced short read. Ms. Butler gives just enough information to make the characters believable and keep the reader turning pages. The romance is light and sweet with hints of further involvement. The pacing is wonderful for a short story. There’s enough plot to keep the reader engaged, and the author’s research shines in this delightful story. Nicely done and recommended.

Ms. Maybud has a marvelous sense of humor. She takes a staid attorney’s office where everyone acts as thought they are made of iron, with no emotions what-so-ever and turns it upside down. While this is total fantasy, it’s sure fun to read and to watch these “robots” turn into needful sex maniacs.

The author gives Alex, the main male character, the characteristic of goodness. He wants all those working in the office to be kind, reasonable, and respectful to each other. Anyone who has ever worked in an office or as a member of a staff team knows that’s impossible. You can have nice people, but it seems there is always at least one bad apple in the group. The main focus of the story is the relationship between these two main characters, but the other relationships are interesting, too. They get even more interesting when the potion is drunk. How the mixed up relationships resolve themselves after the potion has worn off is one of the high points of the story. They do all have memories they won’t forget, even if they’d prefer to. The sexual escapades are pretty graphic, but they are integral part of this plot. Some of match-ups are pretty hilarious. Why don’t you get a copy and see if it makes you laugh out loud? Part of the book takes place in the past, as Chloe’s history is explained, with the majority of the book taking place in the present. As a result, Chloe’s language is a bit archaic with a lot of “ye” and “wouldst” type of language since Chloe has been out of commission for several hundred years and hasn’t yet assimilated to the modern world. This also leads to an occasional humorous misunderstanding as Chloe struggles to understand slang.

Some of the funniest parts of the book involve Earl, Benny and Shauna (Chloe’s rescuers) not only trying to teach Chloe how to be a vampire from books but also just their antics in general. These are easily some of the funniest secondary characters that I have read in quite a long time and I can guarantee you will get a laugh. The author also does a very good job at making the bad vampires into creepy and scary figures.

Though there are clues given, it is never fully explained what marks the difference between the good and bad vampires. Vaguely reminiscent of Feehan’s “Dark” vampires, there are marked similarities between certain general traits of the vampires as well as the difference between them and how they become the bad ones (if I am correct in my assumptions).

This is a thoroughly enjoyable, quick read with lots of page-turning action and laughs along the way that ends too soon. You’ll only regret this one if you don’t check it out.

As things grow serious between them, the embezzling spirals out of control. Six million dollars are missing—far more than Leah took—and all the evidence Will gathered points to Leah. Everything blows up when she is arrested, and Will is forced to fight his family to prove his love to Leah.

Desperation turned Leah Keenan turn to crime; a clever crime, perhaps a harmless, minor-ish crime. We might even sympathize, possibly even admire Leah’s decision. Nonetheless, it’s left her vulnerable to become a certain kind of victim herself.

Will Dannaker seems just as sympathetic, although of course he doesn’t know what she’s been driven to do, or does he? Will has his own agenda – over and above solving any crime. But we can see the ‘why’ behind his actions as well. Sadly – she can’t. Misdirection and miscommunication play a role here, both on purpose, and more subtly, sometimes not. Will is far from the classic hero…but he has his moments! It seems like somehow, things might indeed work out okay – then suddenly the true levels of the crime are revealed.

We readers are engaged from the first, mainly by the depth of Leah’s character. Her concerns for sister Cecelia, even the old “Forever in Blue Jeans” song, all feel so right and so incredibly, believably human. Ms. Ryan reveals a wonderful gift for setting the stage, welcoming the reader in, and making us feel right to home.

From the first, there is a sense that this is a story we’ll read and then peruse again later. That quick identification with the heroine, her challenges and even – oddly – the setting, bring us in close to the story.

So Will’s introduction is both nice…and awful. Their relationship progresses, wonderfully and … horribly. We hope for a certain resolution, we feel like we can perhaps predict it: but with the skill of an illusionist, Ms. Ryan keeps our eye on the romance, while the crime and the mystery evolve.

Secondary roles, friends like Anne, Dani, and others, are important parts of the whole, and Ms. Ryan never falls into using an easy stereotype. That said, there were a few too many of those distinct characters, and occasionally, they drew us away from what I really wanted to read. Necessary perhaps in terms of the crime, but some of that felt like clutter.

The best of Crimes of the Heart is the driving, determined romance at its heart . This story features solid characters, unpredictable action, a real, believable (and so timely) a mystery, and that subtle something more.

Extraordinary lives take place against a backdrop of ordinary; most anyone could find their work or home mirrored in these pages, pleasantly recognizable. Ms. Ryan’s writing style is straightforward, with just-enough description, action, and thought. This is a comfortable read with surprises — rather like finding a well-liked familiar dish, with some pleasantly new spices.
