I found Fallon’s speaking to be a little puzzling and confusing at times, because of course he’s from Scotland 500 years ago, but it didn’t tear me away from the story too much. Overall, Echoes of Darkness is enjoyable, adventurous, and witty.

The Bull Rider’s Secret has moments of pure joy as well as tension. The love scenes are done with a deft hand, filled with lots of emotion without graphic details. My only niggle is that Brody took a very long time to come to his epiphany, and I was ready to shake him. Ms. Thomas, however, did an excellent job of tying up the loose ends. Put this on your TBR list. It won’t disappoint.

When political events are shared, they aren’t distant and grand, but happening round tables down at the local pubs.

Ms. Barrett’s story is a study of people, both in a broad frame and in a narrow, intimate context. The main characters are outstandingly individual. It matters not if the intrigue on the grander scale is not of particular interest to the reader, because Quinn and Meaghann are continually of interest. Both are strong, self-possessed people, admirable for many traits. Quinn, especially, is all the more intriguing because of his personal struggles and demons. Some of the dialogue is simply a hoot: I adore it when people talk at cross-purposes, so believably.

There are certainly a few characters that don’t go much beyond a certain formula of a person. Brid, family matchmaker is quaint yes, but overdone and clichéd. I found her tiresome and perhaps more to the point, so did Meaghann. However, some of these secondary characters certainly seemed to exist merely to goad our heroine. Word or language use occasionally gives us a subtle sense of some of the interplay of ironies going on here. That growing sense of risk – personal, even if driven by the political – guarantees that you will remain on the edge of your seat. Emotionally intense and intriguing, Ms. Barrett’s characters, their struggles, beliefs, but ultimately their loves, will keep readers turning these pages. Clever.

Juggling his responsibilities as a homicide detective and being the single father of three children has taken its toll on him. His attraction to Elyse, a co-worker, only complicates matters. The man’s life seems to be unraveling around him. As if that weren’t enough, Ty is plagued by the ghosts of homicide victims. I could practically feel the weight of all Ty’s problems on his shoulders.

As a hero, Ty is the classic working man in desperate need of a vacation. He’s dependable and good at his job, but that job has taken too much of his time. It was clear from the start that Ty is a loving father. However, his daughter Shelley has some serious problems stemming from the time a year ago when she ran away, problems that should have been addressed much sooner. When those problems come back to haunt her, I was immediately irritated with Ty. He could have prevented some of Shelley’s issues if he would have carved out some time to take her to someone who would help her work through her problems. Ms. Gauthier leaves a pretty good trail of clues, so I was able to figure out some parts of the mystery, but I was completely surprised when some of the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. There were parts of the ending that were left open, but there is no doubt in my mind that Ty will wrap up those loose ends.

I would have liked to get to know Elyse a bit better. Elyse is a smart investigator with a sexy side. She also has a big crush on Ty. However, that is really all I know about her. The flirting between Elyse and Ty as well as their spicier encounters helps add a touch of romance to the story that is a nice change of pace from the heavier parts of the plot. Still, I wish she would have played a larger part in the story so that she and Ty could interact more.

Despite this issue, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Stormtide to a Homicide. I recommend it to anyone looking for an engaging mystery with a splash of romance.

How she deals with it kept me entertained because she didn’t make it easy. In fact, she exasperated the hero, made him work for every little concession and challenged him on many levels. It was fun!

Ana is a pretty complicated heroine with a lot of issues to work out and through. She has a poor self-image and a bruised heart. Although she is well loved by her father, and she’s devoted herself to him and his well being after her mother died, she’s pretty sheltered which prevents her figurative wings from ever completely unfurling to explore the world beyond the vineyard. That means at times she is naïve, vulnerable and persnickety. Yet, for all those stumbling blocks, she has a passion for her grapes and wine, a professional demeanor and confidence in the work she does. She’s resigned herself to never being married and has closed off all her hopes and dreams and settled for what she thinks is her fate. That kind of character is who I like to see get shaken up, challenged and end up with a happily ever after better than they ever dreamed. Ana certainly fits the bill.

Vittorio is arrogant, cocky and controlling, initially. The author slowly fed me snippets of information that explained why the hero is so controlling, why he had an arrogant demeanor, and the reasons he acted so self-assured. His self-assuredness was on the verge of being annoying, so it was interesting to slowly understand it. The ironic thing is, he over does it and ends up eating humble pie, making mistakes he never did before and being totally flummoxed. Vittorio, not knowing what to do? What to say? Inconceivable! And yet, Ana has him rethinking his approach and realizing that she is not like other women, nor does she want to be. He has to take her as she is and not jump to conclusions. Of course he does, which of course presented many opportunities for entertainment; I enjoyed every one of them. The conflict is two-fold. There are internal conflicts they both need to work through, and then there is the Cazlevara family conflict. For a brief period, I didn’t know which way it was going to go.

The secondary characters are family members to both Vittorio and Ana. What makes this book stand out was the author’s choice to bring an emotional and very human reasoning to all that dysfunction. A reader has a hard time staying angry in the face of the revelations about the Cazlevara interpersonal dynamics. Ms. Hewitt reminds readers quite effectively that there are two sides to every coin and nothing illustrated that more than when Ana stood up to Vittorio, despite the high cost of doing so.

The only complaint I have is about Vittorio’s stubbornness. It lasted pretty much through the entire book. It’s the classic scenario of him fighting tooth and nail all the way in an uphill battle with convenient suspicions fed to him to heighten the suspense. Then right at the very end he catapults into an emotional scene that segues into the happily ever after. Even so, I did notice and appreciate how Ms. Hewitt imbued one single phrase with romantic and sentimental overtones that wrapped up this book like a warm and tender hug.

The Man Who Could Never Love touches the heart with its earnest portrayal of two people who didn’t believe dreams could come true. The book entertained me and I read it in one sitting because the pace and storytelling voice wouldn’t let me go. I could relate to the heroine and I enjoyed her personality. It’s a sweet romance and well worth spending time with.

Kylie, Abby, Ryan and the secondary characters are ones that won’t be easily forgotten. And the paranormal element in such an emotional story kept the pages turning. I didn’t want to put this down. With a story that combines many of my favorite elements in a good book: romance, an emotional punch, and the world of the unknown, ghosts, I enjoyed it immensely.

Step back in time with the very talented Margaret Mallory for a Highland adventure that will eagerly turning the pages in this beautifully depicted journey of friendship, courage, love and romance. Ms. Mallory’s story had me hooked with the clever prologue that gives the reader a glimpse not only into Ian story but the already planned follow-up books.

Ian and Sileas’ story was at first heart breaking with a period of darkness that eases into a beautiful and fulfilling ending brimming with possibilities. The writing is vivid and draws the reader right into a fast paced story filled with dashing sword fights, daring rescues, devious characters and some deliciously sizzling intimacy between Ian and Sileas…when she isn’t knocking him out with a skillet.

The plot is well laid out and develops throughout the story. Ms. Mallory does a wonderful job of using the Scottish brogue to keep the reader in the time period and setting. There are quite a few secondary characters but they are assets to the story and not simply page fillers.

You won’t want to miss this first book as it introduces the other three men who will have their own stories revealed in The Sinner, The Warrior and The Chieftan. This reviewer will be anxiously awaiting the next installment to see how Alex, the charming womanizer, fares against his fated love.

This story is sweet and light and I would recommend it to anyone who just looking for something nice and easy to read to pass a quiet and relaxing afternoon.
