This novel has the perfect blend of paranormal and sexual activity – a bit of fear, a bit of raw passion, with a small amount of true love in the mix. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series to see how the different relationships progress, as well as learning about new demons and monsters.

To be honest most of the time when I read sequels I am leery, because I feel as though the first book is usually the best in a series. I was completely wrong with this author. Julie Kagawa surpassed my expectations for a sequel; with regards to her writing style, the imagination needed to create such endearing characters, and the passion that must have gone into getting the storyline just right. Throughout the book I caught myself actually going back to reread passages, because the wording was just so beautiful that I could clearly see the scene as if I were actually a part of the faery realm.

One of the things that made this a page turner for me was the love triangle that Meghan is involved in. She has incredible feelings for two amazing men in her life, but fears losing either of them. It is actually quite hard to ignore the emotions that pour through you during this novel. There is such passion and longing involved throughout the entire story.

As an avid faery world and romance novel reader, I would have to suggest this series to any who have just recently started reading fantasy and also to longtime readers of the genre. I will definitely be adding this series to my fantasy collection. Can’t wait to see what Meghan’s next mission will be!

Hope, a native of Solandria and part of the resistance, becomes Hunter’s close friend. She was my favorite character in this book because of her strength and courage. She never panicked, always stood by her friends and really showed what kind of person we should all strive to be. I really admired her from the moment she entered the story.

Hunter wasn’t always such a stellar character, and had his flaws. With inspirational undertones, this story delivers a message along with the excitement. It taught me that we need to be humble, to not to allow our less positive emotions (like fear, frustration and anger) get the best of us and live our lives not just for us, but for others as well.

I can’t recommend this book enough, and am definitely planning to start reading the next one in the series the moment I’m done writing this review. Kudos to the authors for this marvelous read!

I originally picked up this first book in the Mortal Instruments series because of a recommendation by another YA phenom, Stephenie Meyer. She was so excited about getting to read the third book in the series before it was released that it made me curious to see what another favorite author was reading. I’m glad I took a chance on Cassandra Clare.

City of Bones is chock full of fun dialogue while taking the reader deep into a fantasy world of Shadowhunters, demons, vampires, mundanes (that’s what they call us humans) and werewolves to name a few. Besides Clary there are several other secondary and main characters that bring this adventure to life. First there’s her best guy friend Simon that has had a crush on Clary since forever. Then there are fellow Shadowhunters Jace, Alec and Isabelle. Alec and Isabelle are brother and sister and Jace has lived with them so long he’s practically a brother. Jace is the dark anti-hero of the series. He wants only to forget his past and hunt demons until he either kills them all or dies trying.

I’ve read other reviews that bemoan the long narratives in City of Bones. While they aren’t exactly wrong, I can see the need to describe the world of the Shadowhunters a little more in this first book, including the history of the Nephilim.

The obvious bad guy in the books is Valentine. He’s easy to dislike because he makes no apologies for mentally abusing his son early in life as well as using people with low self esteem to do his dirty work. He’s on a mission, much like Hitler, to destroy anyone that isn’t a part of the Shadowhunter elite.

I think you’ll find this book has a little bit of everything: mystery, magic, intrigue, paranormal, romance and even betrayal. I read this first book in the series straight thru and couldn’t wait to get my hands on City of Ashes since I was left with so many questions at the end of City of Bones.

If you are a fan of the Harry Potter and Twilight series I think you’ll enjoy Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments as well.

Percy and Annabeth, with the help of Tyson, set off to rescue Grover and steal the legendary Golden Fleece in hopes of saving Camp Half-Blood. Even though Percy is only a half-blood you see how his humanity makes him more powerful than the gods that try to direct their children’s lives from Olympus.

From beginning to end you feel as though you are on the journey with Percy, Annabeth, Tyson and Grover. There is an underlying story that began in The Lightning Thief and continues with The Sea of Monsters. Don’t forget to have book 3: The Titan’s Curse handy when you finish book 2, the adventure isn’t over yet!

First and foremost, there is a lot going on in this story. There is a multitude of characters to keep straight and a strained love triangle that still needs a bit of ironing—but if it all went smoothly, there’d be no action, angst, or story.

What a conundrum—which brother to love.

Although there are bits of dialogue that seems stilted and still a bit of soap boxing, the story is worth the read. But be prepared for the ending. I didn’t see it coming and it totally saved the book for me. The ending is a real breath taker.

If you like moody antagonists, doting heroes, and strong heroines, then you need to read The Return: Shadow Souls. I give it 3 suns.

The support of his friends is important to him and Terry Pratchett shows how friends can help, hinder or support when something needs to be done.

Humor and war are not usually found in the same place, but in Johnny and the Bomb the two go hand in hand. The differences between the friends create many funny situations as do some of the explanations they use to try and explain the weird situations they find themselves in.

This is another extremely good read. Terry Pratchett is best known for his Discworld series, but the Johnny Maxwell Trilogy is also up there among the best.

I’ve read all the stories in this series and I have to say this one is my favorite. The circle of characters is tight, yet loose. What do I mean? I knew who everyone was, but I finally got to see them grow a bit as humans or vampires whichever the case might have been.

Yes, Claire tends to save the day at every turn, but I got to see more of why Shane acted so cranky and how Claire planned to go about saving the blossoming relationship with him. The town council wants to sell the cemetery, and its inhabitants aren’t about to take that lying down! Johnny is the only one who can see the outraged ghosts, and the previously alive need his help to save their home and their history. Johnny didn’t mean to become the voice for the lifeless, but if he doesn’t speak up, who will?

The continuation of the “Troubled Times” of Johnny Maxwell’s family have led to him and his mum living with his grandfather. He and his friends often take shortcuts through the cemetery on their way to and from school.

A rumor goes around the town that the council have sold the cemetery for redevelopment for the huge sum of five pence (about seven cents American). Most people in town mutter about this but do nothing. Johnny wonders what the dead would think about being moved to a new site. Curiosity makes him knock on the door of one of the mausoleum tombs. To his surprise the deceased occupant appears and asks him what he wants. Once again Terry Pratchett has given us a fascinating story. Twelve year old Johnny Maxwell looks at life slightly differently than most boys his age, but only Terry Pratchett can make the situation funny, weird and slightly spooky all at the same time. This is an excellent book for children from twelve years upwards. There is just the right amount of mystery, humor and scariness to bring the book to life and fascinate the reader.

With summer on the horizon this book can be enjoyed when you have the time but put down when there are other things to do, but it always draws you back to find out how Johnny can solve other people’s problems (including dead people). A very enjoyable read.

Claire Danvers’s college town may be run by vampires but a truce between the living and the dead made things relatively safe. For a while. Now people are turning up dead, a psycho is stalking her, and an ancient bloodsucker has proposed private mentoring. To what end, Claire will find out. And it’s giving night school a whole new meaning.

What do you do when you’re a human blood bank and you’re in the care of a vampire? Hope he’s not really hungry!

That said, you need to read Midnight Alley.

I read the other books in this series and I have to say each ends with a cliff hanger, but this one is a doozy. Things are going from bad to worse in the college town and there seems to be only a handful of individuals who can make things livable.

I liked Claire in the first two books. Here, she becomes a tad predictable. You know she’s the one who will save the day. She’s got a keen sense of who is good and who will cause trouble. There is a lot of back story and side explanations that can trip the reader up. I found myself rereading in a handful of place to keep track of what’s happening. Still, the secondary characters have their own little foibles and quirks which kept me entertained. I liked her over protective parents. Who doesn’t think their folks hover too much? It added a sense of realism and humanity that seemed a bit overshadowed in the book otherwise.

If you want to read a quirky vampire novel, then you need to read Midnight Alley. I give it 4 suns.
