A regular melting pot of characters people the pages of Devil in Texas—some of them stretch the imagination to the limit. However, every single one of them seems to have his or her own secret agenda—even the raccoon Vandy (really got a kick out of this character).

I enjoyed the author’s unique style of humor that threads through even the scary, heart-pounding happens in this story that moves from Galveston to Lampasas in the late nineteenth century.

I felt a little like I use to feel when I came in late to a movie—I had to work hard to sort out the characters and their relationships. It was not easy to sort out who was on whose side. The twists, turns and shenanigans kept me turning pages. I had about decided Asrael had gotten lost among all the characters—so surprised when this “angel of death” shows up again.

Sadie Michelson, once a cow-town “lady-of-the-night,” is now a master Pinkerton agent with lots of disguises. Determine to solve her case; she is soon at loggerheads with William Cassidy “Cass,” the man she’s loved since childhood—the man who inspires the songs she writes and sings.

Cass, no better than he has to be, is once again working for Senator Westerfall “The Baron.” They go way back, and Cass feels like he owes The Baron, who has a wife called Poppy. She is “something else–WOW.”

Cass also feels responsible for young Collie who has the raccoon Vandy for a guard animal. They aren’t too picky about what side of the law they are on as long as they find what they want. However, Cass does remember Sadie, the first girl he kissed and has never gotten over. His dream is to be a Texas Ranger.

History, humor, LOTS of important characters, action aplenty, and even a little Cajun voo-doo move the story along. By page two hundred, I knew this one was a “stay-up-late read. Even though it was hard to keep up with all the characters, I enjoyed the reading Devil in Texas.

Another story from author R.T.Wolfe, packed full of suspense, action and plenty of romance. The more I read from her, the more I enjoy her writing.

It’s been a while since I read the other books in this series, and I don’t think this one stands alone as strongly as the other two. There are lots of things happening here that relate to previous books, and I think it would be a bit confusing for new readers. But that’s okay! Read the first two books – you won’t regret it.

This book follows Duncan Reed, artist and survivor of a violent crime when he was small. The book starts with a crime reminiscent of that earlier one, and it’s thus he meets our heroine, Nickie Savage. Nickie is a police detective and she’s been tasked with a few crimes, including a missing teenaged girl, and now with finding out who butchered a dog and left its corpse on Duncan’s aunt’s doorstep.

I admit to being just a touch confused at first as we hopped between the two crimes. Duncan helping Nickie with the missing girl, and she involved in both. I struggled sometimes to figure out what investigation mattered to which crime as Duncan, especially, dug up various clues. Eventually I worked it out, but it did give me some pause at the beginning.

I really loved the relationship Duncan and Nickie built. The romance was incredibly well created, believable and not perfect. It had plenty of heat and eventually also filled with its share of heart. Duncan oozed sex appeal and it’s no wonder Nickie couldn’t resist, even when she thought she should.

The secondardy characters really were the icing on this cake. We get to see Andy and Rose and Brie and Nathan … I love this family. And the author added in another fantastic woman, Gina, Nickie’s foster mother. She was possibly my favorite person in the book.

Aside from the initial confusion I quickly worked through, this book was another absolute winner for me. I’m such a fan of the author and can’t wait for the next book! If you love well written, suspenseful romantic suspense that doesn’t skimp on the romance, I heartily recommend this and all the other R. T. Wolfe books in this series.

Savage Deception was a fantastic romantic suspense that kept me turning pages. While it’s technically the start of a new series, it directly follows another book in a previous series. When I first started reading Savage Deception, I hadn’t read that other book, and have to admit to being pretty confused. I don’t think it stands alone well … though I might have gotten things sorted over time, if I wasn’t already a big fan of the author, I might not have kept reading.

What I did do is read that other book and once that was cleared up, it was full speed ahead! Now I was fully engaged and loving every word. The plot here was tightly created with plenty of twists I wasn’t expecting. The heroine, Nickie, is put through the wringer here with her past bumping into the present and she finds out some things that nearly break her.

Don’t worry… she has Duncan. And he’s the most awesome boyfriend ever. I really do love the man and wouldn’t hesitate to steal him away from her if I could. He’s not perfect, thankfully, but his flaws make him that much more wonderful. I really love their relationship, and it developed well here. It’s sweet and romantic, hot and sexy, and really very realistic. They have their ups and downs, but thankfully they know they can trust each other and that makes everything work.

The secondary characters here were just as great as ever. Duncan’s family is so much fun. I really love them all and am glad to be able to keep up with what they’re doing. Nickie has a surrogate family, since her biological one is worse than useless. Her captain, her foster mom … they’re really what give her a solid foundation.

My confusion at the start, along with a few editing errors (the first I remember seeing in Ms. Wolfe’s books — these were wrong words or typos) are all that kept this from being rated higher. I really did enjoy the story once I got my head wrapped around it. It was everything romantic suspense should be: exciting, interesting, well plotted, romantic and had a solid, satisfying wrap up.

I’m sold on this new series and excited to continue on with Nickie Savage, at least as long as I get the whole crew of characters along with her!
