I’m a big fan of Ally Condie, and could wait to dive into this book.

Though I appreciate Ally Condie’s amazing writing, there was a lot in the book that I really didn’t enjoy but I understand why it was needed. I’d like to start with the setting, as it was amazingly described and written. Though there is more than one places in the book, Above and Below, and they were written in such detail that I was taken aback at how excellent they were. I did struggle with the pacing a little since it was a little difficult to get around the complex world building and into the main plot of the story. It dragged quite a bit for me, but the thoughts that were always running through Rio’s mind sort of kept me focused and on track.

I appreciated that Rio showed so much dedication to her sister and that was never broken, even with the introduction of the love interest. Speaking of which, I wish that there had been more romance between Rio and the boy…it seemed that she was so focused (and rightly so, don’t get me wrong) on getting to her sister that the cuteness of the two of them together was thrown in the corner.  Also, can I add in a personal thought – I was so happy to read about a tall, largely built heroine. It appealed to me because she was something different than the average petite thing that a man has to protect in times of trouble.

Also, I’d like to interject on how much I liked the ending parts of the book and, though I wished there had been more to the conclusion, it was very well done and beautiful.

In this second installment in the Age of X series, we see the return of Justin March, religious investigator for the RUNA’s government. I’ve loved Justin from the moment I first met him in the last novel. Although he hasn’t changed his wild and immature ways, he’s still the same, charming man determined to do whatever it takes to not pledge himself to Odin. However, he does have a great deal of personal growth throughout this novel, a lot of it due to the influence of Tessa, the Panamanian teen he brought home with him in the last novel. Her influence combined with that of Mae and Justin’s sister come together to make him a better, if not less flawed, man.

Mae undergoes a lot of challenges in this novel. Being brought into a country where women are devalued to the point of being worthless, she struggles with keeping her opinions in check and wanting to save every last woman in Arcadia. Her time in Arcadia was probably the most interesting storyline for me. To watch such a strong and independent woman play at being helpless was exciting and also a bit sad. However, seeing her and Justin connect on a more emotional level was worth it in the end.

Two characters introduced in the earlier novel also came back to play, Tessa Cruz and Lucian Darling. This made me very happy because Tessa is lovable and intriguing from the get-go. I enjoyed getting to know her better and watch her learn and grow in the RUNA. Lucian, on the other hand, fascinates me. He seems to teeter between being wonderful and amazing all while having the potential for not so great things. I’m still betting that he’s a good guy at heart, but there’s still that chance he might go to the dark side when we’re not looking.

The Immortal Crown ends leaving you with more questions than answers, but in a good way… if such a thing truly exists. I was shocked and surprised, but also very eager to see just how Justin and Mae are going to deal with all that was revealed at the end. If you have to leave the reader with a cliffhanger, this is exactly how you need to do it – leaving the reader both angry and obsessed with knowing how it’s all going to play out.

Have you ever walked in on a movie during the middle of the action scene? You probably were puzzled, didn’t have a clue as to what was going on but you were trying your best to catch on to what was happening? Well this was the feeling I got when I started reading A Wanted Woman.

The main heroine who is faceless and nameless, is stationed in Trinidad. She is there to complete a mission that is suppose to be simple, but finds herself on the run and in hiding after she killed her assigned target plus several other people whose family and associates are now wanting revenge. In a strange land, no money and trying to stay under the radar, MX-401 is on a mission now to survive and get away from the members of the Laventille Killers (LK), who are seeking revenge.

Taking time to call a past lover, and reflect on her also assassin father, Old Man Reaper and coming to know new family members, the author has a lot going on in this action filled 400 plus page novel. Believe me, I am an avid reader and love to escape within the confides of a novel, but with this Dickey novel I am sure I missed a lot because I couldn’t put myself into this story. This is a novel that requires patience, time and also you will have to pay attention so that you will not get lost and confused. The characters have odd names. I didn’t get a feel for any of the characters. They just weren’t believable or developed enough. For a novel of this size I feel like I should know the characters in-depth and still have a connection after spending so much time with them. There is a lot of insignificant small talk in the dialogue that took away from the thrills and action of the book.

True to his pattern in writing style, Dickey did do his research and history on the islands of Trinidad. His detail and description of the geographical location is full of depth and colour. Another one of Dickey’s talents is to write such a long loquacious novel. Dickey has a creative talent and his own personal flare of word play and writing style to a rhythm that his work flows to. Reading his novel will stimulate your mind from a world of action, to sensual love scenes. In this novel you will find graphic and explosive gun fire confrontations, cursing, violence and even a rape scene.

I have read the majority of Dickey’s books prior novels; and love his earlier works that didn’t require so much time and thought to unravel. If you are a fan of his most recent work you may enjoy this one as well. If you have never read Dickey’s work and you are into super novels and you can keep focus on the centered plot even when the author gives a lot more, this will be a novel you would like to give a try.

Having not read the Nightshade young adult novels by this author, I had to get quickly caught up with the paranormal world of Captive. There’s lots going on in the beginning of the story and the author does a good job filling you in on some of the paranormal elements and characters, like the Keepers and Searchers.

I loved the setting which the author conveyed perfectly to set up the danger and intrigue in this story. It reminded me of some of the older gothic novels I’d read many years ago. Tristan is a sexy hero, who comes across as a nice guy even when he discovers the heroine, and intruder, Sarah, naked on his bed.

There’s nothing quite like a romance between two sworn enemies and that’s exactly what you get with Captive. The paranormal world set up by the author is also fascinating with its wolves and witches.

It’s a page turner and I continued on just to see what happened between the two main characters. I’m not sure if there will be more books for adults in the Nightshade series, but it will be fun to check back to see where the author goes from here.

Mae Koskinen is another surprising character. Raised in an aristocratic caste, she left it all behind to be free – free from society’s restraints, from a forced marriage, just free. This alone made me love her, but the sheer force of will she exhibits sometimes and her dedication to her job prove she’s a solid, reliable person to have on your team. She had her moments when I wasn’t sure if I was going to like her much, but she always managed to change my mind.

Gameboard of the Gods is packed to the brim with action, suspense, and hidden secrets that sneak out one by one, drawing you farther into the story with every page. I’ve long enjoyed Ms. Mead’s work, but I think this is one of the most intricate and enjoyable novels I’ve read in years. This series has a permanent place on my must read list.

Savannah is our guide throughout most of this book. It’s a story of trying to stop the war that could ruin them all; laws are being broken left and right, beings are crossing over, and demons are joining in as well as are so many others. In short total chaos has arrived and the battle has just begun. Can Savannah and her friends and allies stop things before it is to late?

There is so much I want to say but so much of it would be spoilers and I so do not want to spoil this read for anyone. I want you to enjoy this book as much as I did. If you have followed this series from book one you will not be disappointed.So much is going on in this book, everywhere you turn there is something happening. I loved seeing how everyone has grown throughout this series. The bond that they all share makes for a great read. Savannah and Adam are all grown up and I enjoyed seeing them take that step towards a permanent relationship. It was nice to see many of the major players in this world come into play. As a follower of this series I know most if not all of the characters and their personalities and I enjoyed seeing just how each one fit into this story. The main women from this series each get their turn at telling us part of this story. I loved that a short story featuring Elena and Clay is added to the end of the book bringing it all back to the characters that started it all.

This book is fast paced and full of emotion, reminding me why Kelley Armstrong is on my auto buy list. Many questions were answered yet there were still some things left unanswered, hopefully this means that this author might just gift readers with a return to this world some time in the future.

This author makes everything about her books “real”. Her characters feel emotions that I find easy to understand and relate to. And I can also understand why that wonderful reasoning doesn’t work.

The killers are determined to get rid of witnesses and hire assassins to accomplish that. As Ellie and Max fight them off and try to keep Ellie safe, they grow close and begin depending on each other. This is an action packed story with danger all around, with an informant in the FBI office, and no way to know who you can trust. You hope all will end well, but there’s no guarantee when you are involved with dangerous folks on the other side of the law whose witnesses disappear before the trial can held.

With all the tension in the story from the chase, the author relieves the atmosphere by adding Ellie’s family problems and creating a heated relationship between the two who didn’t want commitment. It’s fast paced, tantalizing story that keeps your eyes glued to the page. This is well-put-together thriller with a side of romance. Get your own copy and “taste” it.

I never thought she’d use her powers (consciously or otherwise) to win the Pythian Games, but there was that nugget of doubt in my mind that maybe the ultimate lesson for Phoebe would be learning that losing would be okay.

Goddess Boot Camp was as engaging and lively as its predecessor promised it would be. A lot of the character flaws I found in the first book were fixed and a new layer was added to Phoebe’s emotional development that I appreciated. Enjoy this second helping of Phoebe’s life and join me in rooting for a third book.

A modern girl’s comedic odyssey in a school filled with the descendants of Greek gods.

When Phoebe’s mom returns from Greece with a new husband and moves them to an island in the Aegean, Phoebe’s plans for her senior year and track season are ancient history. Now she must attend the uberexclusive academy, where admission depends on pedigree, namely, ancestry from Zeus, Hera, and other Greek gods. That’s right, they’re real, not myth, and their teen descendants are like the classical heroes—supersmart and superbeautiful with a few superpowers. And now they’re on her track team! Armed only with her Nikes and the will to win, Phoebe races to find her place among the gods.

Is it possible for one average American teen to fit in with a class of Olympic heritage? Phoebe has just this question to figure out and answer when out of the blue her mother whisks her off to a secret Greek island as she prepares to be married to a man she only met a week ago. Phoebe predicts colossal failure, her Mom assures her this is a god sent opportunity for her and I was left with the question of why there are so many insinuations about this being such an epic big deal.

The dialogue is quick and shows a real eye (or ear?) for how teens speak. There isn’t any forced moments when Childs tried to force me to believe this was how teenagers really spoke or acted. It flowed easily and the transition between scenes made for a quick, light read. The story moved along without dragging down and Phoebe’s observations, and sometimes lack thereof, are really funny and her narrative voice is engaging.

Despite the fact this is a novel about the descendents of the Greek Gods, it doesn’t veer off of the stereotypes for teenagers too much. Her stepsister is the typical ‘evil’ stepsister and the students are of the classic mold. Not that this is a problem, Childs still has dialogue that is fun and witty and there are certainly some ha-ha moments, but I expected a little more by way of fleshing them out. The author relies too heavily on the stereotypes to explain a character’s motivations.

The ‘surprise’ isn’t that surprising given the contextual clues and a grasp of Greek mythology, but I found the dynamic of Phoebe and her two friends from America to be more surprising. Throughout the entire novel Phoebe is motivated by her need to get that scholarship and get back to America so that her and her friends can be together. The plan had been in place for years. When things change, it made me wonder if Phoebe had been the driving force behind that decision and her friends didn’t want to disappoint her. I wanted to learn a bit more about the time between Phoebe’s leaving and the end of the novel.

Oh. My. Gods. was an entertaining novel that gave the gods a spin that would be fun for anyone to imagine as their ancestors. The sequel, Goddess Boot Camp, is set up and the future endeavours of Phoebe amongst the godly descendants promises to be engaging.
