When Garrett came home from his latest assignment, he discovered his personal life was in shambles. Not only had his wife, Cathryn, filed for divorce, but she’d moved the kids out of the house they’d shared together. I felt Garrett’s pain and confusion as he walked through the rooms of his empty house. However, Cathryn had suffered a great deal in Garrett’s absence. I couldn’t help but wonder if Cathryn and Garrett would be able to see past the pain and find a way to work things out, or if their marriage would become another statistic.

Cathryn and Garrett are two of the most stubborn characters I’ve ever come across. They both have completely different views on their marriage and history together, and this causes frequent arguments. In fact, Garrett and Cathryn spend so much time fighting and lashing out at each other that it was a little hard to get into the story at first. I found myself taking breaks from reading Deadly Obligations because I needed to pull away from the intensity of the fights. The thing that kept me coming back to the book was my curiosity as to how things between them would turn out, and the hope for a happy ending.

I liked Garrett. He’s a strong, loyal, and passionate man, but I found myself shaking my head over his actions many times as I read. I admired his dedication to the military, but disliked the fact that he took his wife and children for granted. He assumes Cathryn and his daughters are fine while he’s away on missions, but it takes something as drastic as his wife filing for divorce to get his attention. Even when he learns of her plans, he arrogantly believes he can swoop in and smooth everything over. She only cries behind closed doors. Though she suffered a terrible loss, Cathryn still manages to hold her life together. That sort of strength is hard to come by.

When Garrett and Cathryn stop fighting, they make a good team. After they learn their daughters have been kidnapped, they work together to bring them home. While it wasn’t exactly practical for Cathryn to be on such a dangerous mission, I’m glad she convinced Garrett to let her go. It gave her a chance to see the harsh reality of Garrett’s work and gave her some much needed insight into his character.

I must mention that I was not entirely happy with the way the story ended. I won’t spill the details, but I will say this: Garrett and Cathryn go through a lot of pain and turmoil throughout the story. In the last chapter of the book, they are finally on their way to finding some peace and happiness together. However, on the very last page something happens that could rip it all away again. Usually, I’m okay with an open ended conclusion, but after a book as intense as Deadly Obligations, this last minute twist felt unnecessary. I have to assume the author is planning a sequel, but it doesn’t make the ending easier to swallow.

Despite this issue, I thought Deadly Obligations was a good book. I liked Cathryn and Garrett, and I enjoyed watching them learn to work together and rediscover their romance. I recommend Deadly Obligations to anyone looking for an intense military themed suspense.

Robbie is a hard nut to crack. It was clear from the start that Robbie is a good man, but he seemed very distant from those around him for a large part of the book. He bottles his emotions up and connects with animals far more easily than people. He’s even on bad terms with his own twin. However, as the story progressed, it became clear that Robbie is hiding a wounded heart. The revelations concerning Robbie’s past aren’t brought to light until close to the end of the book, but the journey is certainly worth it.

Robbie and Jackie are complete opposites, but they do have one important thing in common, their mutual faith in Christ. When Jackie and Robbie first meet, they don’t really like each other. They both had a lot on their minds and they each suspected the other of being up to no good. Jackie and Robbie keep each other on their toes and their teasing banter is quite entertaining. When they profess their faith to each other, their relationship takes a very positive turn. For most of the story, Jackie and Robbie’s bond grows slowly, but naturally. However close to the end of the story, everything seems to be put on the fast track. Given that the pace of their relationship was slow through most of the book, it didn’t seem to fit that they would suddenly make such life changing decisions without knowing more about each other. I would have liked to see Jackie and Robbie spend more time together outside of the crisis at Stellar’s Ford. Despite this issue, I really enjoyed watching Jackie and Robbie grow together and have no doubt that their happy ending is meant to be.

Arrow that Flies is certainly an exciting mystery. The pacing was well done, the characters were extremely likable, and I was kept guessing until the very end. Anyone looking for a romantic suspense with a heartwarming ending should give Arrow that Flies a try.

All in all this was a very enjoyable read and it’s made me want to not only go back to read the first three but I am now looking forward to her next adventure in these chronicles.

If you love the science fiction genre, especially one with a great romance, this will fit the bill. It did for me.

Despite being unfamiliar as I am with the American school culture and atmosphere, I had no problem engaging with her cast.

I’d be surprised if Ms Byrd’s transition to the YA genre does not create a whole new raft of reader/fans for her books. A very good read.

Whether writing on-the-edge-of-your-seat mystery and suspense, or gentle family life with suspense entwined, Anne Patrick is an author worthy of your Keeper shelf.

Ms. Yeary’s skilled word-smithing and vivid descriptions of her beloved Texas, paint an amazing picture of the scenery and environment.

The Stars at Night is a poignant, charming story that held my attention from start to finish, with a reluctant break for sleep.

However, I admired the fact that Jacob let Stephanie make a decision about Brittny on her own. He simply answered her questions when she asked them and was there for her when she needed him. He is a hero every sense of the word.

Over all, I thought In Sheep’s Clothing was a good read. I truly enjoyed the romance between Stephanie and Jacob. Anyone looking for a sweet Christian romance with a dash of suspense should give In Sheep’s Clothing a try.

This book has well developed characters – I especially enjoyed the interaction between sisters Kelsey and Regan. Regan’s initial reluctance to get involved in the affairs of Daradawn and her wariness towards mage Peter, when he comes seeking her in our world, had me on the edge of my seat, and her gradual conversion is well-drawn.

I also enjoyed the deft hand Ms. Hodges had with her back story. The background is woven in seamlessly, and the flashbacks especially well handled. The magical elements and their rules and limitations are coherent, and the array of elves, dwarves, dragon, and mages satisfying in their variety.

There is romance in this novel, but it is first and foremost a fantasy adventure, so be prepared. Yes, it’s there for both Kelsey and Regan, but it takes a back seat to the magical adventure and world saving.

The rewrite is such that there is nothing in here that’s unsuitable for a young person, but in my opinion this is at bottom an adult novel, with adult characters and adult concerns. Not to say that your teen won’t enjoy it – they will – but it’s not your high school magic adventure, this is hard-core world saving.

I highly recommend this lively, well-written fantasy, and I’m eagerly looking forward to the next volume in the series, which, unfortunately from my point of view, won’t be out until February, 2012.

Lady Theresa von Kracken arrives in Constanta as Mihai’s intended. Mihai has vowed not to fall in love again, but Theresa manages to break the battlements around his heart.

In an unfortunate twist of fate, Viktor is bitten by a werewolf. Viktor’s transformation threatens everyone around him including his wife’s safety and Mihai’s happiness with Theresa. Viktor’s bite is the wolf’s torment.

Mihai has his eyes on the future, but only the ancient magic in his blood can save his family.

One of the things that immediately drew me in to The Wolf’s Torment was the exciting prologue. Often I have come across stories with prologues filled with necessary and interesting background information, but few of them have been as action packed as the one in this story. Ms. Burkhart managed to convey quite a bit about Mihai’s history during a dangerous chase scene that ends in a battle between two witches.

The story does slow down a bit from there, but this slower pace is short lived and allowed me to really get to know the major characters. First there is the hero, Mihai. He struck me as very mature for his young age, but then he has to be strong since his father’s health is failing and he must be prepared to assume the role of king. Mihai is very serious most of the time, yet it is clear that he has a big heart. He adores his sister Sonia and truly cares for his best friend Viktor. I really liked Mihai, but he is not without his flaws. When he returns to Moldavia, he is supposed accept an arranged marriage. However, Mihai had an affair while he was at school in London. This indiscretion certainly came back to haunt him when he meets Theresa, his intended.

It was also very interesting to watch Mihai balance the duties of being a prince against the supernatural world. During the day, he is debating with parliament about taxes, and at night he is learning to harness his newly discovered powers. Despite the very large gap between the mundane and the paranormal, Ms. Burkhart managed to blend the two so well, that I had no trouble watching Mihai oversee a construction project one minute and cast a spell the next.

I found it hard to believe that after all the things she had witnessed concerning witches and werewolves that she would still choose to take a certain path. It did not sit well with me at all.

Viktor is unfortunately the antagonist of the story. At first, he is a great friend that Mihai brought home from London. Viktor falls in love with Sonia and everything is going well until he is bitten by a werewolf. It was very painful to watch Viktor struggle with his primal nature and his desire to remain a good man. However, as the tale progresses, the pace of Viktor’s descent rapidly increases until he commits an act of betrayal against Mihai that is so far beyond revolting that I don’t have a word to describe it. Throughout the book, it is suggested that much of Viktor’s behavior is due to the bite of the werewolf. However, there were other werewolves that didn’t seem to have as many issues as Viktor did. I can’t help but wonder if the bite only magnified or brought to the surface traits and feelings that were already part of Viktor.

The Wolf’s Torment is certainly more than a story about a werewolf. There is quite a bit of depth in this multifaceted story of a family’s struggle with life, love and loss. The ending is definitely bittersweet and I had many questions that I hope will be answered in the next book in the series. I’m glad I had the opportunity to read this intriguing tale. Fans of historical, paranormal romance should give The Wolf’s Torment a try.
