Have you ever woken up every day afraid of everything?

For single mom and widow Melody Carter, six months passed since an IED ripped her life apart. Everyone is sympathetic and offers platitudes of comfort and support. Everyone thinks they know why she’s grieving, but Melody isn’t mourning her broken heart. She’s ashamed to be grateful her abusive husband won’t hurt her anymore and scared for her child. Born with a mild heart defect, her daughter needs lifesaving surgery and with her funds tight and her emotional scars tighter, she’s running out of options. When she receives an offer for assistance from Mike’s Place, can Melody put her faith in the men her husband called friend?

Have you ever woken up, day after day, to discover your body’s betrayal?

Marine Captain, Joe Anderson Cooper, received the Silver Star for Valor when he led his unit through heavy fire to rescue fellow Marines. Despite numerous injuries, the Captain refused medical aid, insisting that the medics attend others. A broken back and shattered bones put Captain Cooper in a wheelchair and every day is a battle to keep his recovery on track and his sanity intact. When a single mom moves in to the apartment next door to his and he recognizes kindred—damaged—soul, can he overcome her fear and be the man she’s always needed?

Can these two lonely souls rise to the challenge or will their scars trap them forever?

When life seems to be at its lowest, opportunity can present itself in the most unexpected ways.

Captain Joe Cooper is a true Marine hero. Injured while attempting to save other members of his unit under attack, he is relegated to a wheel chair until his back and leg have the chance to heal. Though he hates the idea of the chair, it’s literally the vehicle that brings his true love into his life.

Melody Carter is a Marine widow struggling with a sickly baby. Alone in every respect, she is exhausted from carrying the burden of the emotional and physical efforts since her husband’s death-and before. When Joe offered his help, her initial reaction was fear, but the combination of his wheelchair and her gut instinct told her he was trustworthy, and she allowed herself to finally lean on someone.

This is a beautiful story of love and redemption. Each character has suffered through their own trials and tribulations, but has persevered and eventually found a match in the other. I love that most of the story is told from Joe’s point of view, since most romance novels focus predominantly on the woman. We do, however, get a good deal of Melody’s viewpoint, so it’s easy to connect to each of them.

Joe had my heart from the start; a man battling back from injury and determined not to give up. Melody is an outstanding character as well; despite being battered and put down, she refuses to submit and is resigned to doing whatever it takes to care for her ill child. We even get to meet Joe’s mom, who is a woman we’d all be lucky to have in our lives-smart, strong and nurturing.

I do wish we had a little more time with the two once their relationship grew, but considering their emotional states, it really was for the best they waited. The slow build up between these two was perfect and natural. Since both were dealing with their share of challenges, it was wonderful to see that neither looked to the other to “fix” things. They first developed a beautiful friendship, although the attraction and love was brewing under the surface.

Those familiar with the rest of Ms. Long’s Always a Marine series will recognize some other familiar names in the course of the story, and it’s fun to see how they can all interact. This book is great not only for the fans of Ms. Long, but for anyone looking for true friendship and love.

Lieutenant Brenden Fitzpatrick is a dedicated Marine, loyal son, and devoted uncle, but he’s lonely. When he went Marine, the rule was don’t ask, don’t tell. His brothers-in-arms pretty much didn’t ask and didn’t care. Watching so many friends settle into long-term relationships highlighted the absence of someone to come home to in his life. When his unit encourages him to give the 1Night Stand service a try, he asks for the impossible—a night with the one man he almost gave up the Marines for in the first place. A man he called best friend but let time and distance carry away.

Liam Gardiner grew up on the same Boston block as his best friend, Brenden. Unlike Brenden, Liam always accepted that he was gay—a fact he didn’t mind flaunting to all the bullies and naysayers in school. It got his ass kicked more than once, but Brenden always had his back, rescuing him time and time again, until the day Brenden left for the Marines. He missed his buddy—the crush he never confessed, lest it cost him the precious friendship—so when Madame Eve’s invitation to meet Brenden arrived, Liam faces uncertainty for the first time.

Life made them best friends, can Madame Eve help them become so much more?

An American hero has only a few weeks of rest and relaxation before he is sent back into battle. What does he do to make the most of his time? He contacts Madame Eve to help arrange his lifelong dream date.

Brenden is gay.

Liam Gardiner was Brenden’s best childhood friend. Openly gay, Liam was the man Brenden protected, befriended, and confided in. Although Liam had a crush on Brenden since they’d met, he also knew Brenden was straight, so he had to settle for a close friendship instead of romance.

I’ll admit I’m not a normal reader of M/M stories, and this is the first I’d made through. What I like best about this tale is within the first few pages, it was no longer a story about two men, but two old friends who wanted to reconnect and perhaps rekindle an old attraction. The friendship and love between Liam and Brenden was very natural and believable, one couldn’t help but root for them from the start.

I will say it was a bit confusing to keep them straight with dialogue and point of view, since the same pronoun was used, but that could be more my unfamiliarity with male/male stories than it is the fault of the author. I do wish we had seen a little more of the two after they finally coupled since the bulk of the story was the build up, but what we were given was beautiful and very heart-felt.

It was a pleasant surprise to get a sneak peek of many of the characters from previous editions of the Always a Marine series. Ms. Long has a wonderful way of showing the connection between characters, and it was wonderful to know they had all stayed together and were making their relationships work. Hopefully Brenden and Liam will join that group.

Whether you enjoy gay stories or have never experienced them before, this is one to try because bottom line, it is a love story, and that’s what we are all looking for.

Roger Michael Easton IV, better known as Rowdy, flouted the family’s Naval tradition to enlist in the Marines—not as an officer, but a ground pounding grunt. He never expected to see as much combat or valor as he did in the field, but every engagement furthered his commitment to his brothers in arms. Now, with an early offer on the table to end his contract, Rowdy has to take a long look at the life he left behind, the life he’s built, and the future he longs to have.

Rowdy also wants a woman who gets him.

Inactive Marine, Kim Wakefield, continues to serve her country as a Naval Criminal Investigator. She’s hard on the grunts and sailors because she is one of them—and they didn’t sign up for easy. Tired of the seedier side of military life—picking up drunk Marines, AWOL sailors, busting drug running operations, or worse, sending drug addicted servicemen to court marshal and treatment, she longs to have her faith in her fellow Marines restored.

Kim wants a man who knows what she needs.

Thrown together by chance on a 1Night Stand, the jarheads have a combustible chemistry—but do they have what it takes to give each other what they want?

Who would be the perfect match for a rough and tough Marine? Well, another Marine, of course!

Rowdy Easton is at a crossroads in his life. Coming up to the end of his stint in the Marines, he’s trying to decide whether to continue or leave the corps. His preference would be to stay, but with cutbacks taking place, he doesn’t want to take another’s place. Mix his professional confusion with personal loneliness and you’ve got a perfect candidate for a 1Night Stand.

Kim Wakefield is an inactive Marine turned NCIS investigator. For a number of reasons, not the least of which is dealing with her own battle of the sexes, she’s signed up for Madame Eve’s service in the hopes of sharing one wild night.

These two were ripe for a one night stand. Their attraction seemed immediate, and they both seemed pleased to have found an unexpected level of respect for the other as well. The sex was smoking hot, as was the attempts at conversation during. I’m not sure I got the same relationship vibe from these two that I have gotten in other Heather Long tales, or other 1Night Stand authors, but the purpose of their date – one night – was very satisfying.

The epilogue left me a bit surprised, but happy for the couple. Rowdy made a decision that I didn’t see coming, and wished we had his point of view as to why (Was it for her? That’s my hope) but it left us with our happy ending, and that is the most important part to me!

As always, Ms. Long doesn’t disappoint. The heat factor was off the charts, even in limited pages. The Always a Marine series is a crowd pleaser for sure, and The Two and The Proud is no exception!

Abigail Powers is a barista in a small coffee shop. Her aspiration is to be a nurse, but until she is accepted in school, she’s working hard to pay off old debts. Her guilty pleasure? Lusting after the handsome, but sad man who frequents the shop each day. Though they’ve never spoken, she can’t help but be attracted to him.

Jay Longmire’s world has been devastated. Losing his family 18 months earlier has left him overcome with grief, so he spends day after day trying to maintain, but cannot shake his sadness. When he meets Abby, he’s not only forced to confront his grief, but the possibility of finding happiness with another woman.

This book is the first I’ve read in The Challenge Series, which deals with characters overcoming an obstacle of some sort. Each of the characters in this story dealt with their share of hurdles, but Jay’s were monumental. While I enjoyed the friendship and interaction between Jay and Abby, I had a great deal of trouble getting past Jay’s grief. The man was described as still having violent nightmares, and vomiting often from the memory of the night his family was attacked. He had such a profound sadness-which was very understandable and the author did an excellent job setting up-but when the characters began their relationship, it felt very uncomfortable. Some of the discomfort may have been with the fact that his daughter was still being kept alive on life support, so the past wasn’t fully resolved. I just couldn’t help but think Jay wasn’t ready for another relationship at that point…not until he was able to put the past behind him.

Aside from the horrific events of Jay’s past, these two were a nice couple. I liked the way they dated, yet weren’t dating. They avoided titles and labels, and just enjoyed spending time together. Abby was a sympathetic character and I liked her determination to help Jay in whatever way she could while fighting the attraction she had for him. One can’t help but like Jay after all he’d been through-an event no human being should ever be forced to suffer. The fact that he managed to get out of bed each day was a testament to his courage.

I do wish this story was just a little longer so perhaps more time could have passed to allow Jay to heal. Aside from that, it was a nice story of redemption and survival. I would recommend this book to those who believe in the second chance at love, keeping in mind it is not for the faint of heart. I will give another book in the challenge series a try because I like the idea of strong characters, and ones who fight through tragedy are nothing if not strong!

First let me say that this can be read as a standalone but you will not get the complete story unless you start from the beginning. The first book in the Lee Girls trilogy is The Heist, followed by For the Love of Chocolat, then finally The Golden Chalice. The first book sets the stage and introduces the characters, gives you background information, and helps you understand the relationship between the two sisters and their respective loves. The second and third book continues to flesh out the story and completely wraps you in their drama. So it would be my recommendation that you should start with The Heist.

The Golden Chalice kept me intrigued from the beginning until the end; it took me on a wild adventure and I was glued to the pages of this book. Michelle ‘Chocolat’ Dixon and her sister Sasha are the daughters of a renowned jewel thief. Sasha and Chocolat have a love/hate relationship which I understood especially because of a betrayal. Leith ‘Lee’ Sullivan is a mobster and the man that loves Chocolat but it seems that they can never find a way to completely be with each other because of one obstacle or another. The Golden Chalice has lots of action, adventure, betrayal and of course intense heat between Chocolat and Lee as well as between her sister Sasha and her drug addicted boyfriend Kumar.

As mentioned earlier, The Golden Chalice is the last book in the series, all loose ends are tied up and it also answers any lingering questions about Chocolat’s relationship with her sister and Lee. I would highly recommend this trilogy, it will keep you interested, will tug at your heart strings and have you begging for more.

After her 1Night Stand, Jane plans to head home.

Lukas Gerard has a secret-a big secret. In addition to teaching geology, he’s also busy preparing his shelter, president of the Nevada Area Preppers, and owns half of a high-tech company dedicated to preparing for disaster. What he’s missing, however, is companionship. He requested a very specific date from Madame Eve over a year ago, and now she’s finally come through.

I’ll preface my remarks by admitting I’ve not only never read a prepper story before, I had never heard the term. This being my first exposure, the author did a very good job of helping me understand the character of Lukas and his obsessive planning. The description of his bunker was very vivid, and although he could have easily fallen into the paranoid category, he was a very likable guy.

That said, the prepper angle wasn’t my favorite, and it seemed to take away from the romantic side of this 1Night Stand. It was necessary to show the attraction and connection between the two characters, and I enjoyed the love story very much. Jane’s inexperience didn’t seem to play into the story too much, but it was endearing to see how patient and understanding Lukas was with her.

I was a bit confused by the end, and I won’t go into specifics since it would include spoilers, but I had some unanswered questions when I was finished. I wasn’t exactly sure what happened, but I can perhaps chalk that up to not being familiar with the prepper angle.

That aside, I did like this book about two people who seemed picture perfect for each other. When you get down to it, it’s a love story, and I enjoyed Ms. Richards’s version of happily ever after. If you like stories about preppers, this one would be a good one to try.

This was a great story. In a few short pages, we get excellent development, from Beth’s drive to Vegas to the happily ever after. The characters display a wonderful range of emotions: apprehension, indecision, relief, and ultimately elation. Madame Eve made another perfect match with these two, and while the sex was incredibly hot, my favorite part was watching the two develop an emotional connection.

I had only one minor issue with this story in that I wasn’t sold on each of their reasons for agreeing to an arranged marriage. Both were intelligent, very attractive, passionate, and wanted a long-term relationship. Madame Eve has a reputation for finding the right match, but I wasn’t sure what the rush was to marry. Why not date first? If you hit it off, you can always marry in Vegas. Small issue, but since it was the basis of the story, it kept me from giving this a perfect five stars.

Small concern aside, I loved getting to know Beth and Chris and am happy each found their ideal mate. Pick this book up if you want a sexy tale of love at first sight!

Enroute to their 1Night Stand dates, Chelsea Haller and Alec Ramsey are stranded in the airport during an unexpected snowstorm.

It doesn’t take long to discover they’re each other’s one-night stand. Lucky for them, they’re drawn together by sizzling electricity and soon forget the icy snow. As the heat between them nearly melts the sheets in Alec’s hotel room, their night of erotic adventure surpasses anything they expected from a 1Night Stand.

After losing her job, she broke up with her boyfriend, and upon the advice of a friend, signed up for Madame Eve’s 1Night Stand Service. Alec Ramsey is a 40 year old pilot who’s been unlucky in love. He signed up for a 1Night Stand in hopes of finding the right lady. Not much else is known about this handsome pilot, but when he meets Chelsea in the airport bar, the two hit it off immediately.

The physical attraction between these two was instant. It was a great demonstration of the power of Madame Eve to set up perfect couples, because merely putting these two next to each other was all the opportunity they needed. They had a great sexual affair, but I felt something was missing. Each had said they had been burned in love, but without any details, it was hard to sympathize with them. It also made it harder to understand what, beyond sex, would keep these two together.

One of my favorite parts of the 1Night Stand series is getting to know the characters and watching them connect with the potential love of their life. I have no doubt these two were attracted to each other, and could potentially have a long-term relationship, but there wasn’t enough in the book to assure the readers that would happen. Each referenced things like ‘never feeling this way before,’ but again, that seemed to be regarding sexual sensations. I would have loved to get to know each of these characters a bit more, perhaps even by way of back story, to know what about the other was unlike anything they’d had before.

That said, the night Chelsea and Alec spent together was hot and very enjoyable. As an optimist, I’ll believe the two made a relationship work, and are living happily ever after. For a fun, quick, sexy escape, this is a good one to pick up.

While en route to Amman to be part of the team to protect the Secretary of State, he comes across a devastatingly gorgeous pair of eyes, and a witty, sharp tongued woman who fires up all his fantasies. When they discover a bomb on board the plane en route to Amman, however, the haze of sensual chemistry dissipates and Haneen works with Dorn to keep the plane safe. In a strange country, not knowing who to trust or whether his instincts are sound, Dorn can’t help himself against the growing attraction he has for Haneen – even though she might be the enemy after all.

This is a fantastic book, brimming with witty, sensual dialogue. Haneen and Dorn are an equal match – both of them bantering back and forth with double entendres along with more blatant sexual teasing. There isn’t much in the way of explicit sex – it’s a slow burn, a build up between Haneen and Dorn, but done with such skill I felt fully satisfied with the teasing, sensual byplay between the two main characters. The chemistry between them is explosive and really well written. Despite the fact they only clash swords for the first time in the airport, author Keva D has done a remarkable job meshing the two of them so it feels and reads like they’ve known each other a lot longer, the sexual tension is thick and delightful between them, brimming with all kinds of possibilities.

Filled with the exotic wonder of other societies, beliefs and systems, this is a heady snapshot of the Middle East that will appeal to anyone looking for romance and adventure outside their regular comfort zones. The story is fast paced and really exciting never letting you pause for breath. This is an excellent book with rich characters and brilliant dialogue. I can happily recommend this and plan to search out others by this author.

Nick Klaussen is a Navy Seal. Devoted to his duty and country, he’s been presumed missing for 20 years. After intense experiences, and some time to adjust to being home, he’s determined to win back his long lost love.

I wanted to love this book. I’m a sucker for military stories and the love between a military man and his woman. While there was much in this story I loved, it left me rather frustrated.

The concept was great – a woman holding on hope her love is alive, and fighting every outlet for answers. I like the spunk and fire of Emmy, but the first half of the book focused almost exclusively on how she put her entire life on hold after Nick’s disappearance. I felt sorry for her – a woman living for her cats and her niece (and 21 year old Seth-we’re not told initially who he is, but assumptions can be made). Over twenty years since the last time she’d seen or heard from him, she still cries for him and even hugs his shirt, clinging to the last bits of his scent and lamenting the fact she can no longer remember the sound of his voice.

When a strange man shows up in her suite in Las Vegas, it’s pretty clear who it is. What isn’t clear, however, is where he’s been. There’s not much of an explanation, and considering the abandonment I’d feel in Emmy’s shoes, I’d hoped we’d get a more solid answer. Perhaps if this novella had been extended, more justice could have been done to these two characters. It’s difficult to express my frustration without revealing spoilers, but the final pages of this tale seemed rushed after the slow build up.

Disappointments aside, we did get our happy ending, and there was no question the love these two have for each other. If you like the idea of a happily ever after despite years of grief, perhaps give this one a try.
