Writing Intimate Scenes for the Worlds of Fire Series

Writing intimate scenes can be tricky at times. There’s something for everyone – from high heat to sweet. But each story should have scenes that are a fit for that type of story and the characters.

As I’m writing scenes for the novellas in my Worlds of Fire romantic fantasy series, I’m realizing that I can’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. Each story has its own mood, and the intimate scenes have to reflect that.
The scenes have to make sense in the context of the stories. Since each novella features a different couple, I had a different way of presenting those scenes.

In the first novella published, Blood Red Moon, the story is told in first person. Avani, the narrator, is expressing her feelings about being reunited with the hero, Derek. Her thoughts about his being a vampire (the Vampire Lord, actually) are front and center.

Avani describes her intimacy with Derek, and she describes what happens when he bites her. Since he is a vampire their love scenes are more intense. But at the same time, since it is first-person, I could only describe what she was experiencing –and her interpretation of what Derek was experiencing.

Metamorphosis is in third person POV and alternates between Asira and Jaydon. Their love story happens while a conspiracy is unfolding at their Alchemist university. They don’t have their first intimate scene until later in the story (for various reasons I won’t reveal because – spoilers!).

I wanted the scene to be romantic and sensual as opposed to intense. Jaydon is a bit of a nerd and Asira is just discovering what it is to be deeply in love. Their intimacy is playful and shows their way of interacting with each other.

Writing intimate scenes can be a big challenge for authors. Should there be a lot of detail? How soon should the “big moment” happen? I think it all depends on knowing your characters and understanding the purpose of the scenes. The most important thing is to make the actions (and the emotions) feel natural.

On the Floating World when two Alchemists fall in love it can be…complicated.

Asira is a member of a high-ranking family of Alchemists who exert control over the libraries that store magical texts. Jaydon, an unconventional but powerful teacher of transmutation at the university, is from a gargoyle shifter group known as the Gigun.

Asira finds Jaydon frustrating and too fascinating for her own good. But she desperately needs his help when she becomes the target of a classmate’s dangerous use of forbidden magic. With Jaydon’s assistance, the two of them uncover a conspiracy that threatens the well-ordered world of the Alchemists.

Struggling with his growing attraction to her, Jaydon is called on to use his knowledge of the magical Books of Fire to determine Asira’s fate. And depending on what secrets the books reveal, he may be forced to make a life-altering decision that will either bind them together… or permanently force them apart.

Jaydon picked up his stylus and shoved it behind his ear. Continuing to study her, his brows furrowed as though he was having an internal conversation. Thinking things over with himself and not sharing his conclusions with her.

Sure, she was used to intense stares from the magisters. They used them as an intimidation tactic. It was part of their mystery to be imperious and detached, to only associate with others on their level or from a specific Order. You were either in the Court hierarchy or you weren’t. Even the most advanced students didn’t have that kind of clout, no matter what Aurum family they belonged to.

“Are you sure you don’t want to see my papers on the topic?” Sitting there while he watched her was unnerving. Not that he was bad to look at, because he wasn’t. His features were finely sculpted, and his wavy shoulder-length black hair framed his face so that his almond-shaped eyes and full lips were accentuated.

He shook his head in response to her question, his gaze still fixed on her.
A noise outside caught her attention. There was chirping coming from the open sliding glass door that led to the balcony. Another perk of magister mentors. Private offices and balconies overlooking the spice gardens.

“Come in.”

A small yellow bird flew in and perched on a shelf above one of the desks. It chirped and then turned its head to study her. Another chirp, then a turn of the head to the left and to the right.

“What do you think?” he asked.

“Nice bird.”

“No, I was asking her.”

“You were what?” She looked at him, then at the bird again, then at him. “Does she talk?”

“Yes.”

“What does she say?” She would go along with it for now. She’d be done and then hopefully get picked by a mentor who was more serious and less messy.

“Move a bit to the left.”

“I just did that. Can’t you tell?”

“If you don’t move the chair, the table won’t fit.”

Mac stood back and examined the placement of the furniture. That’s what he got for getting square tables to fit into this new shop. He had round ones back at his coffee bar in Bristol Hills. They fit better and made it easier for customers to navigate.

“Of course, it’ll fit,” Zora said, obviously exasperated. “Just shove it into that gap there.”

“When you talk like that I get excited.” He hoped to lighten the mood and get her smiling again.

“You’re always excited.” Wiping her hands on her white t-shirt, she left smudges down the front. “It’s almost midnight. Can we go now?”

It was his fault that they were here moving furniture and as-sembling shelves. After putting in a 10-hour day at the shop back in Bristol Hills, they’d come here to get this shop ready for the grand opening. Now after almost five hours of moving chairs and tables around, they hadn’t made much of a dent.

Sure he could hire someone to do this, but it was his responsibility. He had to get it done himself to make sure it was done right. “Babe, let’s just put another table together. After that we can go.”

“Another table? We’ve already done six of them, Mac. There are six more in those boxes back there.” She pointed to the door leading to the storage room. “I can barely see straight. We’ve got four weeks until this place opens, we can’t do it all in one night.”

“I know that,” he snapped. As much as he didn’t want to admit it, she was right. How much could two human beings do? Well, one human and one lion shifter.

“Okay. You’re right. Let’s close up and go home.”

Instead of replying, Zora rolled her eyes and headed through the doorway leading to the storage room and office.

What was wrong now? Once she started the eye rolling, it usually meant trouble. She should’ve been pleased that he agreed with her.

Mac locked the front door, then took a moment looking over the shop before he turned off the lights. Soon there would be posters covering the light brown walls and a chalkboard on the wall behind the counter. Once that was done, and the chairs and tables were arranged, they’d move in the machines and cases to display the deserts and sandwiches. Little by little, it was coming along.

Zora was waiting for him by the back door. Propped up against the wall, her eyes half-closed, she looked like she was about to fall asleep on her feet. Her normally sparkling brown eyes were red and watery, and when she reached up to smooth her curly hair off her face, he noticed a couple of broken nails.

She looked so weary he was tempted to pick her up and carry her to the car. Since he’d met her five months ago when she’d come into Mac’s Coffee Bar, he’d been in love and in lust. What he’d never expected was that the woman he’d met that day, and hired as an assistant manager, would end up becoming his mate. After all his years as a nomad lion shifter, he’d finally found the perfect woman to settle down with.

Create a Playlist for Your Books

Usually when I write I always have music in the background. They include songs that might remind me of certain characters or give me a feeling. For instance, a romantic song would put me in the mood for writing a romantic scene.

What I’ve started to do lately is take some of those songs and put them into a playlist for the book. That way I can share the songs so that readers can hear them too.

But though I use Spotify for my playlists, YouTube is also a good place to create a playlist. The plus about using that platform is that it may also include music videos.

How easy is it to create playlist? Very easy! Just create a playlist then start adding songs to it, then share the link. Even if you continue to find songs to add, you can. Listeners will have access to the playlist even as you’re adding (or removing) your music.

What should the playlist include? Any music that fits the mood of your book. Do you have favorite songs or artists that relate to your story? Add them. I’ve found a few songs that sound as though a character could’ve written the words. Or they describe the action in a certain scene or chapter. Those are the songs I usually listen to as I’m writing. So of course, I make sure they’re included in the final playlist.

The important thing is to set the mood for your reader/listener. Music has been called a universal language. I think it’s a wonderful way to give your readers something special that they can enjoy while they’re reading your book.

Check out the Spotify playlist for Blood Red Moon. Happy listening!

Out of the ashes, a new beginning…

When his family and most of their kind were destroyed by the Guild, Derek inherited the position of Vampire Lord. Alchemists held the keys to creating portals to other worlds, knowledge they passed down to phoenixes. Their utopian society was crushed when the Guild invaded, intending to unlock the powerful secrets phoenixes possess. Lovers Derek and Avani met the night their city was sacked and after the city succumbed, they were lost to each other.

Love will be resurrected in blood and fire…

Having lost her memory, Avani became a protégé of the Guild Master, conditioned by magic to believe shifters and vampires were evil. Eventually, she was made Seeker, tasked with finding the Vampire Lord in order to gain access to phoenixes.

When Derek finds Avani, he neutralizes the magic that’s kept her from remembering who she is. However, the Templars have almost certainly made a pact with the enemy of all supernatural creatures, in order to gain access to the portals. Only a phoenix can save the world from utter ruin now, but that was precisely the asking price…

Enjoy an Excerpt

“You’re thinking about the Guild, aren’t you? They don’t deserve your thoughts, or anything else.” Derek was standing next to the tub, undressing.

How had he known? Could he read my thoughts? Another thing I’d heard that vampires could do. As if in response the stabbing pain increased, like something within me was fighting to get out. Each stab cut deeper and deeper and I doubled over.

The water was shut off. I felt pressure on my back, moving me forward. Then splashing as Derek joined me in the tub. He sat and braced his legs on either side of me. He put his arms around me, holding on as I shivered.

His presence surrounded me like the water. A vampire. My enemy. A dangerous predator who I’d been taught to fear and hate.

Derek pulled my hair back and bared my neck. Soon he would sink his teeth into me to save me. Or he would have his revenge for what we’d done to his people. Maybe that had been his plan all along. I’d be less trouble dead.

In the cooling water, his touch melted me as he glided his tongue over my neck. The pain in my chest slowly subsided. Not gone but not dominant anymore. My body was becoming attuned to him. My gasps of pain lessening as my breathing matched his. In and out. In and out. Steady. Deliberate.

The Vampire Lord and the Seeker. Finally, together at last. But not in the way I’d always thought we’d be.

Writing Fairytale Retellings by Deborah A. Bailey – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Writing Fairytale Retellings

Fairytales have always been popular all over the world. Many of the stories (if not all) that we may be familiar with from Disney are actually retellings of older tales. For instance, Cinderella is a story that has versions in China (from the 9th century) among other countries and cultures.

They’ve continued to be popular with modern readers, which is obvious by the number of fairytale retellings that are available. Fairytales are often used to teach us how to make our way in the world. They provide lessons and usually show the ways of human nature.

Another popular fairytale, Beauty and the Beast can also be found across cultures. It may have different names – and sometimes the “beast” is the bride and not the groom – but they are characters we can identify with. In fact, you could probably see similarities between that story and the myth of Persephone and Hades. A virginal young woman who is mated with a brooding and mysterious man. That pairing shows up in many genres, so it’s not only in fairytales!

In my Once Upon A Princess series, I wanted to show princesses who fall in love with shifter heroes.. In Heart of Stone the princess is in her 30’s and has suffered personal losses. She’s more skeptical and less innocent, but she’s open to love when she meets the “beast” who has been living in an abandoned palace. In Beauty & the Faun a Cinderella-inspired heroine isn’t a princess when she starts out. That comes later! The heroine in Land of Dreams is a mysterious princess who has secrets of her own. In that story the hero is the POV character and, in a way, the roles are reversed. He must determine the magic and mystery around the heroine in order to break the spell.

The fun of writing these fairytale retellings is that we can take the themes and characters and add our own twists. We can put them into the modern day or create a fantasy world of paranormal creatures. Authors have centuries of storytelling to inspire us to take familiar stories and give them new interpretations.

Formula for Fairy Tale Love:
1 adventurous Heroine + 1 tortured-but-noble Hero = Happily-Ever-After

For all the innate complications involved in finding the secret to blissful fairy-tale love with shape-shifters, three wise and discerning princesses trust their hearts instead of their eyes and fall in love with the unlikeliest of princes.

“Heart of Stone:” Leesa trespasses into a haunted palace, where she meets a gargoyle. Breaking the spell that cursed him may carry a price steeper than she’s able…or willing…to pay.

“Beauty & the Faun:” Kayla flees an arranged marriage and falls for a faun shifter instead. But how can she ignore her duty by refusing to marry a prince?

“Land of Dreams:” Cicely knows she possesses magical ability. Falling in love with the courageous, self-sacrificing Willem may be the key to her awakening…or may unleash forces that will separate them forever. (Sequel to Heart of Stone)

Box set includes books 1-3 of the Once Upon A Princess paranormal fairy-tale inspired romance novellas.

What are you fellows doing here?” A man walked out of the darkness and stood with his hands perched on his hips. About a foot and a half taller than Ren and Loren, he also had small horns and pointed ears. “Who is this?”

“I don’t know. She was running away,” Ren said.

“Then cut her loose,” the man ordered.

Loren complied, easily cutting through the limbs holding her in place. A few hacks and Kayla fell to the ground.

“Thank you,” she rubbed her arms, then slowly came to her feet. “I was telling them that I was running away.” When she looked up, she noticed that they were all examining her with the same smile on their faces.

Kayla looked down and immediately wanted to run away again. All her clothes were gone, the remains were tattered bits of cloth on the ground. “Oh my! Stop looking.” She wrapped her arms across her chest. Then realized that wasn’t exactly covering everything, so she moved one hand further down.

“That’s not helping,” Ren said.

“I still don’t understand why she didn’t wear clothes when she ran away,” Loren remarked.

“That tree – bush – whatever tore them off me.” Kayla stamped her foot, unable to gesture without revealing everything. “I’m cold. Can we have this discussion another time?”

“You’re right,” the man bowed to her. “My name is Del. I’ll take you somewhere to get warm.”

“Del? That’s an odd name,” she remarked.

“Not as odd as being a naked woman in the forest after midnight. Unless of course she was here to meet a few satyrs.”

“Well, I’m not.” The nerve of him! “Is that what you are?”

The boys laughed, but stopped when they saw Del’s annoyed expression.

“My good lady, I’m a faun. So are Ren and Loren. You come into my forest and compare me to a satyr? I should leave you right here.”

Creating the Hero and Heroine for Hathor Legacy: Burn by Deborah A Bailey – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Creating the Hero and Heroine for Hathor Legacy: Burn

When I originally came up with the idea for my Hathor Legacy series, I had the characters in mind long before I started writing the first book. While in the process of developing the story, the characters changed along with my original vision for the series.

For instance, in one of the earlier versions, Jonathan was a shady nightclub owner who was forced to come to Hathor by the corporation. He was to take part in an investigation of other club owners. But as I began to refine the story, I found that I really didn’t have a compelling reason for Jon to come to Hathor. Why would the corporation choose him? What could he contribute? How would he and Nadira get together romantically?

I realized that if he had a stronger reason to go to the planet, it would increase the stakes for him. So, he evolved into a CEO’s son who goes to Hathor to locate his missing father.

In the completed version of the first book, Hathor Legacy: Outcast, when Jon arrives, he’s brought face-to-face with Nadira. She’s responsible for investigating his father’s disappearance (and a robbery at his father’s mine). Of course she dislikes him when they first meet, but she’s attracted in spite of herself.

In the process of Jonathan working with Nadira to find his father, he’s exposed to the inner workings of the Guardians. As he learns about the culture on Hathor, the reader does too.

It was also important to make him the type of person Nadira would grow to care about, especially after her initial dislike of him. Though Jonathan could be arrogant and overly confident, his impulsive behavior helped move the story along.

At times her conservative approach was at odds with his tendency to charge ahead without thinking. But that created tension between them and added conflict to the story.

Their initial love scene in book one was due in part to their being in close proximity, and magnified by the psychic connection Nadira created between them. But as the story progressed, they learned to trust and care deeply about each other.

In early versions, Nadira had a brother who was killed during an investigation. But as her character underwent several changes, she became an only child whose parents were taken out of life at an early age.

So, her extreme independence and guarded personality were due to her experiences in her early life. Those qualities made her a very efficient Guardian, but also made it hard for her to trust others. When she eventually let Jon into her life, it was a breakthrough for her.

In book two, Hathor Legacy: Burn, Nadira and Jonathan are a team, though they’re still working out their relationship.

In this book, Jon is the one who thinks before he acts, and Nadira is the one more likely to rush into danger. So they’ve managed to influence each other enough to take on each other’s traits.

Through the events that unfold in the story, their partnership is very strong and so is their psychic connection. Nadira and Jonathan are a team and are aligned mentally and emotionally.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000035_00023]On the planet, Hathor, an old threat re-emerges that may destroy the fragile alliance between the Guardians and Novacorp. When Nadira is called to investigate a rash of fires throughout the city, she discovers the Deshtu, another group with PSI powers who have been purposely kept in the shadows.

Working to uncover the source of the fires, Nadira learns the brutal truth about the origin of the Guardians. The Guardian Elders have plans to make Nadira more powerful, and she may be forced to sever her psychic connection to her lover, Jonathan Keel.

When an unexpected ally gives Jonathan information about the Deshtu that connects them to the fires, he becomes a convenient scapegoat for the opposing factions. Nadira puts her life on the line to solve the crime, while the Elders make their move to remove Jonathan from her life forever.

As time runs out, the Guardians prepare for a clash with Novacorp that could plunge the planet into chaos, and a final betrayal forces Nadira to risk everything to save herself and Hathor.

Enjoy an excerpt:

“I don’t believe in old stories, Nadira. Whatever they think they can accomplish, it won’t work. But I mustn’t criticize Elder Dakar even if I feel that some of his actions are questionable,” Mikal said.

“Are you going to tell me what you mean by that?” Nadira asked. “What has he done?”

Mikal looked off in the distance. “Your transport is coming.”

“You’re not going to answer me, are you?”

“I’m his assistant and it’s not my place to say anything against the Elder,” Mikal said, as he glanced back down the street. “But I know that he will do everything in his power to force you to comply with him.”

“Force me? None of them can force me to open myself up to them. That would be a violation.”

The transport trundled up the street and pulled over to the curb. It stopped and the door swung back with a hiss.

“Yes, it would be, Nadira. But they’re desperate and afraid of what Novacorp may do to us. And desperate people can do violent things.” He reached out and ran his hand along her cheek.

His touch was like fire against her skin, searing her with his open desire. Startled she jumped back and stumbled as she tried to stay on her feet. “Mikal, don’t. I have to go.” Brushing past him, she climbed into the vehicle and moved to the opposite side of the seat. Sitting there huddled in the corner, she felt vulnerable, like cornered prey.

“I’m sorry if I was too forward, Nadira,” he said, leaning into the cabin. “My emotions overpowered me.”
