When Billy uncovers a failed love affair, he learns it lasted more than fifty years until it fell apart. But as they set about their task, the pressure of modern life threatens to tear them apart.

Billy was nearly an hour late when he finally rushed down Fulham Road and into the entrance of the Royal Marsden hospital where he ran into a black haired, brown-eyed vision of masculinity. Literally ran into. Publicly crashed into a stunning man wearing a white fitted t-shirt, a linen suit, tan loafers, and stood tall like a catwalk model. Too late Billy skidded to a halt, and into the arms of the handsome stranger.

“I’m so sorry,” Billy blurted out.

The vision of masculinity reached forward and grabbed his shoulders to stop him from falling.

“No problem.” The man looked directly at Billy and held on to his shoulders for a moment or so longer than was probably necessary.

Billy wanted to crawl away and hide in a corner. He had never considered himself a cool guy. The roles he played in soap operas as a sensitive-looking young man with an apologetic, hesitant manner were in truth no more than an extension of his own personality. He was uncomfortable in large social gatherings, and preferred his own company.

But this man with wavy black hair, deep brown eyes, and strong arms was someone he would dearly like to spend more time with. Billy struggled to find a witty phrase, a bright piece of banter to rescue the moment.

“Sure.”

Sure? Billy shook his head at the crassness of his response. The man smiled, dropped his arms, and strode off.

Shit.

The Royal Vauxhall Tavern by David C. Dawson – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes David C. Dawson who is visiting with us to celebrate today’s release of For the Love of Luke. Check at the bottom of the post for a chance to win a digital copy of the book.

Thank you so much to Long and Short Reviews for letting me stop by!

For the Love of Luke is a story of love and has been a work of love for me. Not just the wonderful heroes Rupert and Luke, but also the British locations they visit in the book.

One of them is a famous pub in London called The Royal Vauxhall Tavern. It’s on the south bank of the River Thames, and is the oldest surviving gay venue in London. It was built by the Victorians, and became popular with gay servicemen on their return from the Second World War.

During the 1980s Freddie Mercury was a regular. His close friend Cleo Rocos describes in her memoir how, in 1988, Mercury disguised Princess Diana as a male model and smuggled her into the Tavern.

These days the Royal Vauxhall Tavern is not only a preserved heritage site, but also a fantastic night out. Two years ago I was privileged to perform on the stage there with The London Gay Men’s Chorus. If you’re in London, take time to go see it!

The leathers Rupert brought for Luke were a snug fit. They clung tight to almost every part of his body. Luke admired himself in the full-length mirror. He turned side on. They felt good. He had to admit it. They looked damn good. Tight, black leather jeans enhanced the bulk of his thighs and the narrowness of his waist. They sagged a bit in the ass, but Rupert explained that was necessary to allow Luke to sit comfortably on the motorbike. Luke turned up the collar of the black leather jacket and closed the zips on both sleeves. Kevlar protective panels in the back, sleeves, and shoulders of the jacket filled out the upper part of his torso, adding bulk to his hours of work in the gym. He crossed to the bed and sat to pull on the reinforced bike boots, fasten their zips and Velcro covers.

Luke smoothed his hands across the surface of the leather stretched tight across his thighs and grinned at a stirring in his groin. The sensation both surprised and pleased him. He stood, and the rigid shape of the boots forced him to lean forward, like a skier about to descend a black run. He attempted to stand straight, the upper part of his body compensating for the enforced bend in his knees. The jeans pulled tight against his crotch, and his cock rose to the stimulation of the leather hugging his body.

“Sexy man.” Rupert’s voice came from the doorway. Luke turned. Rupert wore a one-piece racing suit made of red leather. White leather panels stitched into it enhanced the shape of his torso and legs. He crossed the bedroom to stand behind Luke at the mirror and placed his hands on Luke’s thighs. “I’ve not worn those leathers for a long time.” He studied Luke’s reflection in the mirror with an admiring grin. “They fit you really well. How do they feel?”

Luke took Rupert’s hands in his and pulled them to wrap around his waist. “They’re making me horny,” replied Luke. “I was getting a hard-on just standing here, even before you came in.”

Rupert slipped his hand down and caressed the front of Luke’s leathers. “And now you’re rapidly outgrowing those jeans. By the second, it feels like.”

He placed both hands on Luke’s shoulders and pulled him gently forward. He bent his head and kissed the side of Luke’s neck, slowly and tenderly, his tongue warm and moist against Luke’s skin. “I want you right now, the way you look and feel,” breathed Rupert. “But we’ve got to get moving. It should take us only an hour and a half to get there. Come on.”

Christmas Started in July This Year

Christmas started in July this year. I’m not pleased. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a fan of Christmas with the best of them. Time for family, time for friends. Good food and wine. Time off from work and lots of good movies on the TV.

But July?

We were buying a new doorbell at the local hardware store when it happened. Our old one still works. Occasionally. It’s one of those wireless ones where you can choose between fifteen different ring tones, from the usual “ding dong” to a train whistle. Honestly. Why would you want to hear a train whistle every time someone arrives at your front door? We have the chimes of Big Ben.

And the doorbell works perfectly well. For about a week. Then it just stops.

“Do you know your doorbell’s not working?” It’s usually the grumpy postman who asks us that. For nearly a year now. So one Saturday morning in July, after Nick had dealt with the grumpy postman banging on the front door yet again, he came back into the kitchen and said: “We’ve got to get a new one”.

So there we were in the hardware store, testing all the different ring tones, and arguing over whether the Blue Danube waltz was a suitable ring tone for a front door. That’s when I saw it.

A snow covered Christmas elf about six inches tall.

He was at the back of the store, perched on a bag of birdseed. Smiling.

We had to leave. Well, really.

I’m not Scrooge. But starting Christmas in July? That Saturday was one of England’s few bright, sunny days, and there wasn’t a hint of snow in the sky. And yet there was a Christmas elf, smiling inanely at us, with a dusting of snow on his elf cap.

It wasn’t even Halloween.

So the doorbell still doesn’t work, and the postman is still grumpy every other week. We’ll have to go back I suppose; it’s the only hardware store for miles around.

By the time we do it will be packed with Christmas elves, and singing snowmen too. It’s August now.

Bah, humbug.
