Top Five Books / Book Series Of All Time

Thanks so much for having me on your blog today! Dreamspinner Press will release my new m/m shapeshifter novella, Nemesis, Alpha Unit One: Book Two, on August 16th.

Like most authors, I’m also a reader. As much as I like reading physical books—don’t you just love the smell of an actual book in your hands?—I’m really happy someone invented e-books and e-readers. I can take my e-reader with me everywhere, and I don’t have to worry about carrying enough books with me, or find space for them! This happened to me on one vacation, and it was terrible. Five days before the end of our vacation, I ran out of books. That’s not an experience I want to repeat!

As much as I enjoy reading new books, there are books that I’ve dubbed my comfort reads, which means I can read them over and over again. So, in no particular order, here are some of them:

5. Josh Lanyon’s The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks. I’ve got this as an e-book, paperback, and audiobook, and I read or listen to it at least once every year. I don’t know what it is that always gets to me, whether it’s the whole atmosphere, the mystery, or the relationship between the two main characters, but this is a story I’ve been re-reading for years now. On a sidenote: I was also extremely happy about the sequel. 😉

4. The Investigating Love series by LM Somerton, which consists of three books: Rasputin’s Kiss, Evil’s Embrace, and Tarot’s Touch. I love the relationship between Connor and Alex and totally adore Connor. I love how he’s such a good cop but at the same time shy and innocent. It’s a combination I find irresistible.

3. There’s another Josh Lanyon series called Holmes and Moriarity that I really enjoy. Like with most of Lanyon’s characters, I needed some time to warm up to them, but after a while I fell in love with Christopher Holmes. The books are very humorous, which is always a big win for me.

2. I’m also a big fan of A.E. Via’s Nothing Special series. I don’t like all the books in the series the same, but I do re-reads of the first book, called Nothing Special. I enjoy the interaction between God and Day, and I especially like the sassiness of Day.

1. Last one for today: The Beacon Hill Sorcerer series by SJ Himes. This series consists of three books so far, and I’ve re-read the first one several times. I like the whole world-building in this entire series as well as the characters within. Simeon, the vampire, is the right fit for Angel, the necromancer, but to be honest, I mostly read the books for Angel. I love his snark and attitude. 

That’s my favorite list for today. Of course I’m always open for suggestions, so if anyone has any book recommendations for me, go for it!

Nicky Reed may have won the battle regarding baby shifters working as policemen, but he’s not so sure about the war. His mate and superior officer, Sam Black, is still overprotective with a capital O. As a result, Nicky sometimes finds himself repressing some of Tiny’s—his snow leopard cub other half’s—natural urges. Which leads to frustration on Nicky’s part.

With a new drug called Nemesis killing in record numbers, Alpha Unit One must find out who’s behind this horrible narcotic and get it off the streets—a tall enough order without press accusations that baby shifters are to blame for the team’s lack of success.

Their investigation into Nemesis leads Nicky and Sam and the rest of the team into unexpected waters. Will the stress rip the squad apart? The baby shifters may find themselves unable to perform the job they love: protecting the people of New York City. And Nicky may be in over his head—in more ways than one.

Where did you hide it? I shrieked. I couldn’t help myself. This couldn’t be asked in a normal tone of voice—not anymore. Where the hell did she put it?

You’re obsessed with that freaking ball, you know that? Connor prowled along Annie’s back in his shifted form as a polar fox kit, his white fur a stark contrast to her orange-and-black stripes. He seemed so very small in comparison to Annie, and it didn’t help one bit that a pregnant Annie was an even bigger Annie than normal.

Where is it? If I’d been in my human from, my lower lip probably would’ve wobbled. Although maybe not, because in my human form, I wouldn’t lose it about my most favorite ball—ever.

It has to be here somewhere, Annie replied in a startlingly soothing voice. She only used that tone when she played with Connor and me in our baby-shifter forms. We’d dubbed it her mother-voice, which she hated. Of course we liked to tease her mercilessly with that. But… but not now. Now I needed to find my ball!

You kicked it away, I muttered, you go and find it. I want it back!

“Having trouble with the kids, darling?” Jake, Annie’s human mate, crouched low and petted her head, grinning. Annie gave him a withering stare that would’ve sent anyone else fleeing, but not Jake.

Connor proceeded to walk back and forth on Annie’s back, sometimes jumping and barking. Very funny. Why was no one helping me find my ball? It was bright red and fit perfectly in my mouth. Didn’t they see how important it was to find it?

I plunked my butt dejectedly on the floor and tried to control the urge to cry. Lunch break was supposed to be fun, not the end of the world. Which it was. At least for Tiny—my name for my snow-leopard-baby-shifter form—who very much ran the show at the moment.

A big hand lifted me up in the air, and Roland’s mangled face came into view. While strangers still shied away from him and I still caught the others sometimes throwing pitying looks at him, I had no qualms. When he held me close, I reached out with my paws and pressed them against his cheek. He smiled, and I gave the tip of his nose a swift lick.

“Ugh.”

That certainly wasn’t the reaction I’d hoped for. He liked me doing this. Sometimes. I think. Or not?

My ears drooped and my whiskers trembled as I stared at him. Roland settled me against his chest and repeated, “Ugh.” Not aimed at me, then.

Curious, I turned my head, and sure enough, Annie had shifted back into human form and was now assaulting… uh, kissing… Jake. I mirrored Roland’s “ugh” with a protesting mewl. Jake’s hands were tangled in Annie’s long reddish braid while she held him as closely as possible to her body.

Connor shook himself as he too shifted back to human, causing his white-blond hair to fly around wildly. “Please,” he groaned. “Get a room. We’re supposed to be tough cops, not some lovey-dovey… I don’t know whats.”

Jake freed himself from Annie. “If you can be a tough cop and a baby shifter, I don’t see why I can’t be a tough cop and a lovey-dovey something or other.”

I gazed back at Connor, waiting for a witty reply, but none came.

Turning my attention back to Roland, I wondered why he had picked me up in the first place. Which reminded me—my ball!

A cry escaped my mouth—it was supposed to be a growl, but try growling when you’re a snow leopard cub—and I climbed up on Roland’s shoulder for a better vantage point.

“There’s no need to cry, kiddo. I saw that ball go underneath Sam’s desk.”

I bunched my muscles to jump to the ground, but Roland closed both hands around my middle and stopped my forward momentum. Irritated, I wriggled in his hands. Let me down!

Before Roland had a chance to say anything, the office door banged open, revealing a wild-eyed Sam. My Sam, to be precise.

My Top Five Hobbies

Thanks so much for having me on your blog today! Dreamspinner Press released my new m/m shapeshifter novella, Alpha Unit One, New York, a few days ago. I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite hobbies. Let’s start from the bottom:

5. Hiking: I’ve always loved to hike. At first my husband and I hiked at least every other weekend. During our university time, we lived right next to the Palatine Forest, which was awesome for us. Later on we moved away, had kids, the whole package, and hiking took a backseat. Now that the kids are older, we hike again. We especially loved hiking in the Ardennes, but unfortunately I’ve got some health troubles that force me to take easier routes.

4. Swimming: This is something I started at the age of four, and my love for water has never changed. I don’t see that happening anytime in the future. I don’t swim as much as I’d like to, but this is also related to health issues.

3. Writing: Admit it, you thought that would be my number one, right? A few years ago you would’ve been right, but it’s become less important to me. Time factors into it because finding time is ridiculously hard. Also, my desire to sit in front of the computer for hours is, um, dwindling. 😉

2. Sewing: This is a relatively new hobby for me, although I’ve always been into crafts. I’ve done a lot of cross stitching and crocheting, but currently I love to sew. You can’t let me loose in a fabric shop because I’ll guarantee you that I’ll buy something. I can’t help myself when I see all the pretty fabrics and all the ideas of what clothes I could sew pop into my mind. 😉

1. Reading: As soon as I could read I was hooked. I’ve always, always read a lot. I also read fast, like 50 to 90 pages per hour, which is probably why I need to have so many books. The invention of e-readers is a godsend for me because now I have no problem storing my many books. I love to get sucked into a story, to fall in love with the characters and atmosphere. I hope when you give Alpha Unit One, New York, a chance you’ll be able to relax and feel like smiling.

The cat’s out of the bag….

In a world that accepts shifters as normal and thinks nothing of human/shifter couples, baby shifters and small shifters are treated as subpar. They are not allowed into the more dangerous professions, and their mates have legal control over what they can and cannot do.

Nicholas Reed is about to challenge the established rules. At twenty-eight, Nick has just been accepted into New York’s Alpha Unit One—an elite law enforcement team, composed equally of humans and shifters, that specializes in drug crimes. It is Nick’s dream job. But if they find out what he’s hiding, his career could be destroyed.

Enter a huge complication in the form of Sam Black, an older lion shifter who is the leader of the unit… and Nick’s mate. Nick wants Sam, and he wants to keep his job, but he can’t have them both. He also can’t choose between them.

Annoyed at my jumbled thoughts and ramblings, I tried to push everything aside and knocked at the door. A deep rumble called out, “Come in!”

For a second, my bravado faltered. What if they found out who I really was? All my hard work would be for nothing, then. No matter how good I was at my job, they’d kick me out before I could utter a single word. Guys like me weren’t supposed to become cops.

I pushed the door handle and walked inside, catching glimpses of a handful of people—mostly large people. That’s how it always was. Everyone had to be taller, bigger, meaner than me. It was like a law or something.

Oh boy, and there I went again with the rambling.

Seven pairs of eyes stared at me, waiting, assessing. After clearing my throat, I gave a small wave with the hand that still clutched the envelope.

“Hi,” I said. My voice came out soft and tentative. Screw that!

Putting more strength into my tone, I tried again. “I’m Nicholas Reed, your new colleague. I’m looking for Sam Black.”

A guy with short black hair, tinged with a few silver strands at his temples, unfolded from a chair. My nose informed me this was the guy who’d jostled me only a minute or so earlier.

Fuck, fuck, fuck! My boss was a lion shifter.

Okay, I could still do this. No stepping back, even though my inner voice screamed at me to leg it. How could I be so stupid as to want to associate with one of his kind?

Black strode toward me—or maybe I should say he swaggered—oozing self-confidence and… intoxicating pheromones. He smiled as he stretched out his hand. For a second, I got lost in his hazel eyes. All my defenses lowered at once. I wanted to rub my cheek against his in the worst way while my inner voice shrieked, filled with too many emotions for me to accurately compute.

I blinked, which effectively cleared my head. Bastard!

I knew what he was doing. He was checking to see if I’d fall for his pheromones and react so he could determine whether I was a shifter instead of a human. I ignored his hand, still held out there waiting for the obligatory shake, and sneered. “What? No conviction in the system?”

He dropped his hand and scowled. “Last guy who reeked of cologne as much as you do was no human. He fooled everyone, and he put the team in jeopardy.”

“So the guy was a shifter. What’s your problem with that?”

“Guy was a goddamn sheep, that’s my problem. First sign of trouble, he ran.” My new boss frowned suddenly. “How’d you pick up on what I was doing?”

Shit. That tiny inner voice yelled something unintelligible at me, but I’ve had years of practice ignoring it. “You sniffed the air, and let me tell you, it wasn’t subtle.”

A lanky man on my right threw a ballpoint pen onto his desk, laughing. “He’s got you there, Sam. Regarding your question about the shifter—that’s just how we roll here, kid. We don’t work with sheep or small shifters. They’re not dependable.”

“Then it’s your lucky day, since I’m simply human,” I stated, wishing I’d stop sweating so much.

Black circled me before his meaty hand landed on my neck. I stood stock-still as he swept my hair aside and whispered, “Then you won’t have a problem with me taking a whiff, right? You know, just to make sure you’re not another one of those lying idiots who could cost my team their lives.”

“Does that mean you’ve had trouble with imposters regularly?” I asked, curious even as a shiver crept down my spine. A huge beast sniffing at me tended to put the fear of God into me.

“Everyone wants to get on this team, but only a few are a good fit,” Black purred. “You’re sweating. Are you scared of what I’m going to find out, and what I’m going to do with you then?”

I had a pretty good idea what he’d do with me if he found out. “You’re sniffing at my neck, dude. Either you want to fuck me or bite me. Neither option sounds incredibly appealing.”
