There were flashbacks from the point of view of the character who tried to end their life, and for a long time I couldn’t figure out if it was Karen or Tris which actually kept me reading to see if my first inclination was right.

The setting is wonderful and well described by Ms. James. I liked Karen and Tris but I think the other secondary characters kept me interested just as much. All are well-rounded and have interesting personalities.

The plot is very entertaining and when someone begins blackmailing Karen I couldn’t put my e-book reader down. There were late night meetings in churchyards, escalating threats and all things that make a great suspense. I won’t give away what happens to the blackmailer but I thought that perhaps the incident would up the suspense just a tad more but it didn’t, which was a bit disappointing to me.

I was cheering for Karen, but actually more for Tris because he came across as sweetheart of a husband who seemed to go to any length to protect his wife from dangers of the past.

Although this is close to a 300 page book you’ll find the pacing fast because of its page turning quality and your need to find out what Karen’s fate will be.

Summer’s still young and if you’re looking for one more title to add to your beach book pile and love suspense, I’d recommend this one to you.

As we follow them through the story, it turns out they are far more similar than it seems at first glance, and because of this, the chemistry between them was convincing. The way they slowly reveal their true selves to each other and how that forms a strong base for their burgeoning feelings was the highlight of the novel. The differences between them make for a dynamic relationship from the first meeting on, and it only intensifies as several obstacles come in the way of them admitting their feelings and being together.

The novel starts off to a fast pace, but it loses steam in the middle with Lily and Kenan dilly-dallying about what to do about their growing relationship, until it picks up again towards the end. The story becomes more complex and intriguing as more and more side characters appear, but most of these are portrayed too black and white, which is a shame as more complex characters could’ve lead to an even more intense plot. Especially the last conflict would’ve been more intense if Lily’s ex lover Patrick had not been presented so one-dimensionally. The American/Cornish language peculiarities make for a few funny moments, but the conversations between Kenan’s eight-year-old daughter Mandy and the adults often feels stilted and awkward, too childish. The descriptions of cooking and food, however, show the author’s great knowledge and love of the topic as the scenes are mouth-watering.

I recommend Sugar and Spice to everyone who loves a sweet romance, and to every foodie. The tender emotions of the main characters and the descriptions of food will surely enchant you.

It’s been awhile since I’ve read a historical novel set in the Old West and I’m glad I found A Bargain Struck. It’s a sweet story of two people both healing from the pain of losing their spouses and learning to trust and love again.

The author did a great job setting the scene of what Wyoming was like in the 1880s. From the opening scene when Ellen arrives via stagecoach to her journey to Connor’s homestead, I got a sense of what life was like and the hardship working and living on the land must have been like.

And like all good western stories there are the villains, the cattle rustlers, and the conniving beauty who you hope gets what she deserves.

All the characters, not just Ellen and Connor, were well developed and believable. I felt myself cheering for Ellen as soon as she was introduced in the story. You know it’s all going to work out for everyone but the fun is getting to that point in the story.

If like me, you’re looking to take a once in a while break from contemporary novels, I think you might find A Bargain Struck worth your time.

The Wedding Diary follows the path that leads to the HEA of Cat Aston and Adam Lawley. They’re two people who were both in relationships that ended up badly and all that they were left with were broken hearts. But somewhere along the way they meet and they became close. The way to their happy ending, i.e. a wedding, is very rocky, but with a little help of an eccentric wedding planner, everything and anything is possible.

The Wedding Diary was so full of twists and turns, ups and downs and funny situations. Both main characters were so lovable. They might have seemed like weak people who avoid confrontations, but in crucial moments they showed that they had backbone proving that no one could mess with them.

There was another character that I hated (but in the end I fell in love with) and that is eccentric wedding planner, Fanny Gregory. Fanny is a good spirit of the story. Most of the time I found her so annoying, but since nothing is what it seemed in The Wedding Diary, Fanny also turned out to be something completely different.

The writing is also great. The story was written from third person POV, but it follows simultaneously Cat’s and Adam’s story, so that reader knows what is going on with both of them. The story flows smoothly, all ends are tied up and the hero and heroine’s HEA is believable. Furthermore the descriptions are so well written that I felt like I was in London, England countryside and Toscana while reading this story.

I love this story, because it made me feel good all around. So if you like well written, funny, happy and feel good romances, go grab this one.

I’ll admit up front that I love stories either set in Ireland or with Irish characters and that was one of the reasons I opted to read and review this book. And I wasn’t disappointed because this was a fun read from beginning to end.

The author(actually there are two of them) did a wonderful job drawing me into the tale and keeping my interest throughout. A couple of times I thought I’d sit down and read for fifteen or twenty minutes and when I looked at the clock almost an hour had passed because I was anxious to know what happened next.

Every single character is well drawn and come across as real people. I especially liked Luke from the minute he was introduced. My heart ached for him at times and I was hoping they’d give him the happiest of endings for all the hardship he’d been through, not only in the story, but in his life leading up to the point where the story begins.

Dialogue was another thing I really enjoyed. It sounded like real people talking and not a word was wasted on anything that wasn’t necessary for you to know. And of course, setting won me over and I felt like I do was in Ireland…and England too.

This is Isabella Connor’s first book and I hope it won’t be the last because I eagerly await the next story.

I love the way the author wound the women’s wishes together and how the resolution of each depended on her interaction with the group. The story moves at a steady pace with highs and lows, but at all times I wanted to know what was happening next.

At the end of the book I was left wondering, did magic have a hand in the results? Or was it just coincidence? I really, really wanted it to be magic. Love this book! Well done, Ms Lovering.

Is J really the man Madison believes him to be?

This was the second book I’d read by Ms. Wareham and, like the first one, it began with lots of suspense that had me turning the pages. I like the way that she built upon the suspense and made me continue to guess what was going on with Jay. I really did think he was just going to be a homeless person who’d suffered a memory loss due to a beating. However, as the story unfolded it seemed obvious that he was somehow part of some deeper mystery and maybe even something sinister. The pacing was spot on and I liked the way the author built up to Jay and Madison’s first love scene. It was ideally placed.

There was an array of secondary characters in this book that also kept me guessing about their motives and how exactly they tied in with Jay. He was a character I was rooting for probably more than Madison, although while reading it I definitely hoped they had a future.

As this is high on suspense I can’t give too much away but will just say that the last thirty pages had me worrying about a happy ending as it didn’t look like there’d be one. However, the last chapter tied up all the loose ends and I liked the way Ms. Wareham chose to end this story.

If you’re a fan of romantic suspense, this is a great pick for you.

The title of this book pulled me in because it brought back memories of watching old Doris Day movies with my grandmother. So what a nice surprise to read the first few pages and realize that the main character is somewhat obsessed with Doris, plays her songs, and even has taken in a stray cat and named him Rock.

Besides giving me a trip down memory lane, I also enjoyed the story and it’s wonderful lead characters and their push-pull attraction for one another. In fact, I thought the opening scene could have easily been played by the late Rock Hudson and Doris Day. It was funny, made me laugh and had me cheering for them from the beginning.

I also loved the setting of the quaint Welsh village and the theme of can you ever go home again. The secondary characters were also well rounded and I found myself also cheering for another couple, Kitty and Adam. Some of the characters were quirky and the author did a great job giving me a feel for the workings and sometimes bickering politics of small town life.

If you’re looking for a fun read on a winter’s day and like me, remember some of the old Doris Day classics, this story is a delight and one that I recommend.

If you’re looking for a good page-turner, Up Close is for you. Ms. Gyland wasted no time in getting to the suspense. I’m a big fan of romantic suspense and this one reminded me a lot of some of the older classics of the genre written by Mary Stewart and Victoria Holt. I loved the setting and the author did such a good job describing it that I felt like I was there watching the scenes take place. If you like suspense novels set in England, and not necessary the big cities, this is one you might like to check out.

There were lots of creepy aspects to the book as well, noises in the attic at night, things seeming to be moved, and lots of people who were hiding secrets. One thing I liked was the unique hobby of the hero, that of underwater diving. Ms. Gyland obviously did lots of research on the topic and it showed in the plot.

While the heroine did sometimes seem to put herself into dangerous situations that could have been avoided, I felt this could be overlooked because the story was so well-crafted. The secondary characters were all great and fun to read about too. And although I did figure out some of the secrets the characters were keeping, I nevertheless felt compelled to read on.

After reading Up Close, I’m definitely looking forward to the author’s next book. If like me, you love curling up with a good book on a cold winter’s day, I say this one is a must read for you.
