Have you ever wondered what secrets antiques would tell if they could speak?

I liked Katy the instant I met her. It isn’t easy to include a great deal of character development in short stories, but I was impressed by how much I learned about her as a result of her impulsive decision to buy the strange, little statue. Her curiosity and perseverance show up almost immediately, and it was really interesting to see how these traits carried her through to the final scene.

The twist at the end solidified my decision to give this piece a 5 star rating. As pleased as I was with the steamy, playful sex scenes, it is Katy’s decision to attempt to lift the curse that makes Sex After Death such a great read. Figuring out what she needs to try next propels the plot forward and gives Katy good reasons to continue working with the statue. While I have no idea what her plans may be, this would make a great series if Ms. Gaines ever decides to revisit this world. If nothing else, I’d love to see the sizzling chemistry between the main characters once again.

What surprised me the most about this tale was how often it made me laugh. The author introduces Katy to such unexpected situations that her reactions to them are as humorous as they are well-suited for the tone of this piece. Sometimes arousal and laughter go well together. This is one of them.

Sex After Death is one of the best short stories I’ve read in 2013. I can’t recommend it highly enough to anyone who loves quirky, funny erotica.

Hans is coming into his own and realizing the depths of his brawn, but things aren’t what they seem. Can Hans sort out his feelings for the wolf and defeat the forces working to keep them from their happily ever after before time runs out?

This wasn’t exactly the story I was expected when I read the blurb. I know it’s pretty far into a series and maybe that explains a bit of my confusion. I enjoyed the characters and their relationship and parts of this strange world. I did feel a bit like the world was rushed, it was obviously meant to be a very grand world, but the explanations and descriptions were missing. This is a short story so there wasn’t a lot of time for world building, but the characters were fascinating even while I found myself wanting to know more about them. I understood their motivations and their reasoning for their actions and could relate to them if I were in their situation. The author did a great job working with what little time they had and even moving the story along so that actions that were taken were more believable.

It was definitely a quick, enjoyable, and quirky world that I enjoyed visiting. I would definitely try more books by Ms. Slayer in the future.

Now all that remains is for Talia to join them. What happens here in this story is an eye popping, heavy breathing, and HEART POUNDING encounter between these three.

Too bad the story was so short. I would have loved to read more about Tristan and Ryker and their relationship.

Get your popcorn, get comfortable and prepare yourself for an hour of fantasy at its best.

I’m Helena and I’m no delicate flower, my rough touch making former paranormal lovers cry. I’m looking for someone big and strong and preferably not a wolf, especially not that alpha wolf I have stalking me.

I’m not attracted to him — no matter how wide his shoulders or how high his pain tolerance. I’m not that foolish. Lasting relationships between wolves and vampires are forbidden, and this male has the gleam of forever in his wild eyes. He is determined to make me his mate and that, I know, will break the fragile peace between our species.

There’s a thin, blood-red line between enemies and lovers. I’m about to cross it.

Forbidden love between two warring factions, what’s hotter than that?

Helena is having a tough time finding a mate. To say she gets a little aggressive in the bedroom is an understatement. She likes to draw blood and go for it hard and fast. So when a sexy wolf pads into her life and her soul she finds it hard to say no, in fact, all she can say is yes, yes, yes! But should she? When this one wolf, this very shifter, is in fact supposed to be wed to her best friend.

This is the second story in a set, though as the author proclaims, it can be read alone. It’s hot – there’s a good, hefty dose of sex – short, violent and also romantic. Ms Sax does a good job of describing the characters and Helena and her wolf, Marrock, were pretty clear to me from the outset.

There are a few inconsistencies with descriptions Helena gives about herself, her heart mainly, I didn’t think vampires had beating hearts, in fact she says so herself ‘My nonbeating heart aches’, yet she has a pulse, blood, her heart races when her lover makes her excited. It would have made her more vamp like without these elements. I liked her though, and I enjoyed the first person voice she had.

Some of the sex is shifter sex, so if you’re not into heroines clinging onto super-hairy backs this might not be for you, though I found it okay; he’d only half-shifted when she humped him. There is some conflict, a bit of scrapping and fighting, but not loads and it does add to the story.

The book switches between the hero and heroine telling their side of the story. I enjoyed Helena’s version best, mainly because I enjoyed her descriptions of Marrock, though I did like the way his wolf lived inside him, how he refers to it. That gave him an extra dimension.

If you like paranormal sex scenes and a bit of love angst between a wolf and a vampire you might just find this is a quickie for you.

Officer Amanda Black has her sights set on the hottest hottie in the MPD calendar, Mr. July, Lt. Jamie Callahan, but every time she gets close, he backs off. Is he avoiding her because she’s black? Or because he’s got some last century sense of nobility when it comes to officers under his command? Either way, Amanda intends to change Callahan’s mind. No one stands up to an Alpha She-Wolf in heat. She’s about to mark her territory, and any woman who gets in her way’s going to feel her claws.

The Russian Mob has declared war on Memphis police department. Several cops didn’t make it and now they must figure out who set them up. All the while, Officer Amanda Black has had the hots for Lieutenant Jamie Callahan since the police academy, she has intentions on making it known she is interested.

I thought this would be an interesting read of police investigation with a paranormal twist. I have to say I was somewhat intrigued to see Memphis, Tennessee, a city I’ve visited several times in a book so I was excited and ready for the action. I found myself pausing when I saw that the Memphis police are at war with the Russian Mob. I didn’t let that odd mix stop me. I proceeded to read and have to say that the opening chapter had my interest. Lieutenant Snorrasan was implementing a new chain of command with fellow officers Jamie Callahan and Amanda Black. Recently the force lost Officer’s Smith and Reginald, and nearly lost Officer Black. They have reason to believe that there is a mole in the department and officer’s were lost because of an ambush. Officer Callahan is promoted to lead the investigation being warned to not trust anyone.

I really think the story line has much potential. I was hoping for more action but it seemed the focus was more on the pack law and claiming Amanda a mate. There’s this elite team of werewolf cops out in the line of duty on the case of illegal sales of unregistered weapons and the main characters are more focused on mating and making it known to other pack members that they belong to each other. Amanda, the heroine of the story was made to be a Billy bad A—but it seems as the story develops she’s not so hard and bad. She’s questioning Callahan’s love and also worried about the claiming process.

This one really didn’t give me what I thought such a strong title and such an interesting blurb offered. However, the idea is a good one, and the author’s ability strong enough that I would read more of the series to see if the next installment picks up on the action and if the story line develops more.

Cheyenne didn’t know what she was in for when she took over her friend’s lease. She thought she was getting a perfect apartment with reasonable rent. And then a demon shows up on her first night, demanding the sex that’s owed him. That’s when she regrets not reading before she signs, though she doesn’t regret it long.

The landlord made a deal with August — an entire apartment complex as his sexual playground in exchange for personal gain. Cheyenne is August’s latest acquisition, and his prowess has her eagerly awaiting his return. She happily meets his every challenge because the second she refuses, he’ll drop her into Hell to satisfy his many brothers instead.

With the end of the lease approaching, Cheyenne discovers emotions developing for a demon who could probably never return her feelings. The terms of the agreement are simple, but she’s planning to negotiate for an extension with an option for love.

Who would be able to pass up the perfect apartment, fully furnished, and in a good neighborhood for such a reasonable low monthly rent? Some might say there are things that are too good to be true. For those that doubt, leave your reality behind and come visit Cheyenne as she signs a one year lease at Ashbrim Heights and see how perfect her apartment is.

Or Current Resident was a very satisfying read for me. I enjoyed the plot, the characters and loved the steamy hot sex scenes. Cheyenne Norden is overjoyed with excitement in signing the lease for such a perfect apartment. But that excitement comes to a halt when she learns who August is and what she has really signed. A Copulation Clause stating August, a demon, can come at his will to Cheyenne’s apartment and have relations with her. If she denies him that right it constitutes as a termination of her lease.

In addition to the one year lease, August also explains the six month renewal to Cheyenne, where if she allows him any pleasure he wants she can receive whatever wish she wants. If during the extended six month lease, she denies him his pleasure she is sentenced to hell for a term of 5 years. Cheyenne makes it through the year with a breeze and goes for the six month renewal. During this time the author’s voyeurism skills are displayed for all to see and read. I found the sexual request by August to be wild and a great imagination was used by the author. Cheyenne is a brave and adventurous character and I liked that she gambled and took the risk to gain her wish. She knew her place and didn’t try to make the relationship with August into what she knew it couldn’t be. I am please with the ending. It was a fun and interesting read. Or Current Resident is a sensually written quick read that will whet the adult appetite.

This is a spicy and tantalizing short read that took a vivid and sexual imagination. This is one satisfying book you wouldn’t want to miss.

Esther Mills is caught in Hell’s version of Groundhog Day. Every year she’s resurrected on Easter and relives her death, only to be escorted to Hell again. The one thing that makes her life tolerable is being escorted back to Hell each time by Lucifer, her sexy perdition guide. Esther and Luc share a hot crush. But for some reason he won’t act on his feelings.

This Easter, Esther’s going to make sure Luc can’t ignore her any longer. She’s going to take her life back… and when she’s done with her sexy devil, he’s not gonna know what hit him!

This was a neat take on Good Friday. I have never really thought about what is going on in Hell while I am praying on Earth. Sexy Lucifer is drawn to Esther from the first time he saw her. She is attracted to him as well. However Hell is Hell and Esther gets punished just because of the day she died. Since she died on Good Friday her fate is to relive dying every year. She has signed a contract and can not go against it, or else she will be severely punished. She has had enough, and plans on running away.

I thought a few things in this story were cool, like the fact that they have houses, neighbors and get to eat in Hell. They live as though they are on Earth. They even have fences for privacy. Interesting. I always thought that Hell was fire and pain. They have closets and clothes, and I can’t imagine what is so bad, other than being punished for not following the rules.

I also thought that it was weird that Lucifer was not the head demon. I always thought that Lucifer was Satan. It was also very weird to me that Lucifer was a fallen Angel. That was in scripture, and the author kept it, but not much else. Lucifer was also said to be a beauty in scripture, and when he was sent to Hell he lost his beauty. However Esther found him very attractive. I know that this is fiction, but as I read through the book I kept thinking these things in my head. It was interesting because I did not know where the story was going, and the ending was something I never expected. I really liked the ending though it wasn’t what I’d expected.

This is a story where the characters needed to have each other. Isn’t that the ultimate pleasure? The twists and turns in the book made the story more interesting!

Jeanette has no interest in all the political wrangling her werewolf pack is doing these days, so she strikes out on her own. She thinks she’s escaping any kind of danger, but being alone has its scary moments, too, like when she injures herself on a remote jog.

Werekitty Neale is happy to come to the rescue, and even happier to bring this sexy lady home to his werebear mate, Zane. The two boys think Jeanette is just what they need to complete their happy family, but is Jeanette willing to take a chance and lose her newfound independence?

There’s a lot to be said for an erotic romance when they are not bound by the rules of normal human society. Throw in the paranormal aspect and relationships form faster, prudish hesitation and coyness is not a game that gets played and an easy acceptance of their natures means that readers get to the good stuff faster. It’s a win-win situation because if you’re short on time and just need that hit of fun and frolic to get you through the day, these types of stories fit in perfectly.

Bear Facts has the additional bonus of a cute and sassy heroine who is simply fun. Jeanette’s sense of the silly and irreverence is what endeared her to both me and the heroes. What is interesting is that she is the way she is in the first place. There’s a lot that has gone on that could have shifted her personality to wary, bitter, aggressive or sour but she’s not any of those things. I liked getting to know her as much as the author let me. It’s like Ms. Talbot condensed the good aspects of the heroine.

The dynamic of a wolf, a kitty and a bear playing house is quite entertaining but the room that gets the most use is the bedroom. It’s there that a reader will see the three bond and get to know the other parts of each their personalities that will either make or break their budding romance. Naturally there is a lot of experimentation and testing of who likes what and who likes to do what to whom, but that’s half the fun of the story. It’s how the relationship grew.

Neale was adorable and perky, and Zane was big, gruff and adorable in his own way. The author used her words to depict what Neale’s role was in the relationship as opposed to Zane. It was helpful because this is the second book in the series and I’d not read the first one. Turns out I didn’t need to. Ms. Talbot provided just enough information to make me understand how Zane and Neale originally got together and pique my interest to read their story without bogging down this one with details or losing me because I didn’t have enough. That’s a hard balance to make in a short story amongst a series, yet she accomplished it.

My only let down was the conflict. It really wasn’t about the relationship per se. Oh, there was a tiny bit of internal angst but it paled in the face of the meaty one that the author teased me with. It had the capacity to be juicier, and to have a more powerful impact on cementing Jeanette’s decisions about her choices regarding Neale and Zane. It fell a bit flat. I wanted that high drama, if only for a few paragraphs, to really sink my teeth into and see how it affected the main protagonists on a higher level than what was delivered. It was too weak for me and I was disappointed. I prefer the heroes and heroine to work a bit harder for their happy ever after. It makes their commitment more real for me.

On the whole, Mixed Breeds: Bear Facts is simply entertaining. It provides a lot of smiles, certainly a few hot flashes and is a pleasant way to spend some time. If you like sexy hijinks with some growls, purrs and fantastic mixed coupling, this might be the book to try.

Livia is aware that Byrne doesn’t want a Hazac for a mate and for him keeping the covenant is a matter of honor, not desire. She has one shot to capture her dragon on her terms. She attends Byrne’s party with seduction in mind.

One night. Her way.

Byrne Tregaron is about to have everything he’s ever wanted. In just days, he will become a dragon warrior after years of training, and he is looking forward to starting his new career. When he is called into his grandfather’s study, he is curious as to what is going on, and soon learns that he has been entered into a covenant, to be mated to a dragon he doesn’t even know exists. To break the covenant would be to lose it all; his career, his family’s honor and his personal freedom. He agrees, and decides to have one last big night of freedom. Livia Hazac has loved Byrne Tregaron most of her life, and is shocked when she learns of her covenant to join with Byrne. When her friend hears about the party, they decide to crash it, and Livia is determined to earn Byrne’s affection, her way. As she watches him chat with all the beautiful women, Livia takes off on a solo flight, not realizing Byrne noticed her, and followed her away from the party. Catching her was no problem, and after one of the best nights of his life, with a woman he only knows as Via, Byrne has a big decision to make. He realizes that what he shared with his mystery woman was more than just a fling, she is his true dragon mate. Will Byrne honor his covenant, forsaking true love? Will he bring shame upon the family, lose his career and all he’s trained for to be with Via? Or will he discover things can be more than he ever thought possible?

Covenant is BJ McCall’s fourth Dragonfire book, and one of the most fun to read. I like this world Ms. McCall has created, one with passion and desire around every corner, and paranormal characters who have the same worries as any of the normal people: insecurity, low self esteem, indecision, all are seen in this one, and it made the story more intriguing. The characters in this one were well developed, and I enjoyed the interaction between all of them.

Livia Hazac is from a typical middle-class dragon family, and has watched her heart’s desire for years. She is generous and attentive to friends, regardless of who they are. I liked that she helped an old lady, with no thought of reward, just to be her friend. I like that she has her own goals in life, besides wanting a man she doesn’t think will ever notice her. She has a core of inner strength, and I found her to be a loyal and intelligent woman as well.

Byrne Tregaron is a man born of privilege, strong in character and willing to work hard for what he wants. He is handsome and intelligent, and determined to enjoy life to the fullest. I liked that he didn’t just walk away from the covenant, and that he was willing to do what was required, in spite of his inner turmoil. As he got to know Via, I was surprised she never revealed her true identity, but I wanted to watch as plans unfolded for these two.

There are plenty of secrets here, such as Via’s real identity, and the truth behind the covenant. There is lots of heat in this one, and the scenes between Via and Byrne are off the charts for pure sexiness and passion. I really enjoyed the big reveal at the end of this, and even the one sad point was handled with gentle care, bringing a sense of closure to an old hurt. This is one for those who like knowing that sometimes, dreams do come true, and once in a while, you can have what you want. But beware, this one could burn your fingers, so handle with care.

Rogue dragons are committing crimes. Anti-shifters activists are demanding action. A human vigilante militia has formed.

The good dragons have come up with a plan. Undercover dragon warrior Velka Krytt’s mission is to bring the Rogues to justice. Law enforcement has a different plan. Undercover human cop Aric Exeter’s mission is to bust the Vigilante organization.

When their missions collide, they are forced to go on the run. Hunted by the Rogues and Vigilantes, Velka and Aric must join forces to survive the danger coming at them and fire flaming between them. Things are getting dragonfire hot!

Sometimes what seems so obvious is anything but. Velka is clearly working with the Rogue dragons to try and steal from the rich. Eagle (Aric) had been working with the vigilantes for weeks to try and take down the dragons whether they are Rogues or other. Yet, they find themselves together fighting for their lives and discovering each other’s secret.

The beginning of the story is a bit confusing at first when trying to decipher who and what the vigilantes and rogues are, their purpose and how they play a role in the story. Once I was able to put everything together I understood what an influential role they played in the story and how much the additional conflicts really added to the story.

The love story between Velka and Eagle was exciting. The action in the story really helped to bring them together in a magical way. Even when they do not trust one another they have to depend on each other for survival. This really helps to keep the relationship moving forward as well as create more excitement in the story.

The various twist and turns that the author introduced into this story as well as the characters really created a dynamic story that was truly entertaining.
