Travel writer Julia Sullivan lives life in fast-forward. She jet sets to Europe and the Caribbean with barely a moment to blink or sleep. But too many mishaps and missed deadlines have Julia on the verge of being fired. With a stern warning, and unemployment looming, she’s offered one last chance to rescue her career. Julia embarks on an unlikely journey to the ‘Heart of Dixie’—Eufaula, Alabama—home to magnificent mansions, sweet tea, and the annual Pilgrimage. Julia arrives, soon charmed by the lovely city and her handsome host, but her stay is marred by a shocking discovery. Can Julia’s story save her career, Eufaula, and the annual Pilgrimage?

Dancing Naked in Dixie is a fun story with the feel of both “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Hart of Dixie”. This one will take you on a ride from the hustle and bustle of city life to the laid back, everybody-knows-everybody small town, southern life. As you turn the last page, you’ll be surprised, and sad, that it’s over already.

When magazine travel writer, Julia’s, career takes an unexpected turn, instead of heading to beautiful, exotic Bali, she ends up being sent to Eufaula, Alabama. She’s to write about their annual “Winter Pilgrimage” in a bid by the magazine to start a series on the “local flavor”, off-the-beaten path places of America. She arrives thinking she can make this a quick trip, interview a couple of people and be on the next plane back to civilization but the people of Eufaula have other ideas. And when Julia meets her charming, handsome tour guide, Shug Jordan, she suddenly doesn’t mind so very much.

The character of Julia is at once sassy, vulnerable and very real. Her life seems to be one of chaos, where she thinks she’s in control but she’s right on the verge of losing it completely without even realizing it. She’s still hurting from her mother’s death and blaming her father for things he’s done in the past and the pain she feels from both is tangible. Her reactions to different situations are realistic enough that I found myself either laughing out loud or tearing up, and her internal dialogue is hilarious. As a native New Yorker, her response to the “hospitality” of the deep south was absolutely priceless, and the situations that she somehow manages to get herself into had me laughing and sometimes cringing in sympathy at the same time.

The other characters, and the setting, in this book are so expertly written that you can picture the town, the people and the atmosphere. It makes you want to visit, or move to, the deep south so that you can be a part of this world. Each character has their own quirks and personality that makes this little town comes to life in your head, leaving you wanting to know them. Well, most of them anyway. Usually, when I can say this about a book, I have a favorite secondary character that won me over more than the rest. I honestly don’t know that I could pick one in this book because they are all so distinct from each other and so much fun that I loved them all. Turns out, Julia ends up feeling much the same way. And, if you’ve ever spent any time in the south, you will understand the culture shock that she feels when she finally does make it back to the city.

The plot had enough things going on in it that it kept moving at a good pace and the culmination of most of these things at the end totally surprised me. I’m usually pretty good at predicting the ends of movies and books, but this one got me. I loved it! There is an element of romance in the book, but it’s a sweet romance, much like your first crush turning into your first love. We also get a nice wrap up at the end, with both the romance, and a couple other subplots that you want to see how it works out. That said, however, I could see this one turning into a series with the town, and the people, as the focal point. It would definitely be a fun series that I, personally, would love to follow.

From Julia’s first taste of sweet tea and visit to the local diner to being given items “on the house” that are a staple in the south but foreign to most New Yorkers to every single “bless your heart”, this story was a fun book that had me laughing or crying throughout. I was sad when I turned the last page. I am so glad I had the opportunity to read this book. Lauren Clark is definitely going on my watch list. Her voice is distinct and her writing fun – just the kind of author I love! I will be highly recommending “Dancing Naked In Dixie” to anyone willing to listen to me!

All her life, Callie O’Rourke wanted to be a firefighter. A lifelong nightmare of being in a fire has driven her to pursue a career to fight fires and save lives. She won’t let being a woman stop her from achieving that goal. When her determination and training land her a job, Callie has no idea being the city’s first female firefighter will gain the attention of more than just its citizens.

Although haunted since childhood by the fiery death of his father, firefighting is in Danny Redmond’s blood. He comes from a long line of firemen, all the way back to his great-grandfather.

Callie’s refreshing candor ignites Danny’s interest. With her ability to fight fires, combined with the way she puts him at ease, it’s not long before they become friends. Focused on being the best firefighters possible, neither is looking for romance. Yet the more they’re together, the more they realize firefighting may not be their biggest challenge.

The world is full of books. Endless amounts of them. But there are only a few rare books that you pull out to read and, when finished, you’re overcome with such intense emotion. Sparks is one of those books. The experience I had as a reader while engaged in this powerful, riveting story had me in a whirl of feelings.

Callie O’Rourke is Fairmont’s first female firefighter. She’s a bit of a news maker with this status. Callie’s strong willed, fierce, and takes many risks, but these risks are to save lives. She thinks with her heart and her head. She’s had a lot of things to deal with in life, but Callie has definitely overcome obstacles to get where she is today. Though she didn’t get off on the right note with Danny Redmond, the hero.

Danny is a bit complicated. This man has not been whole for a long time. In a tragic chain of events, Danny’s life changed when he was a child, and the things he feels and never completely dealt with affect him to this day. He’s not too happy about Callie, but oh my, do things change for him rather quickly.

Written with such intense depth, Sparks draws readers into a wild ride of feelings, a bit of adventure, and a whole lot of love. The conflict keeps the story line tight. Just when I thought Callie and Danny were on their way to a beautiful relationship, some startling revelations come to light, spiraling everyone involved into a confused state. Talk about characters going through turmoil. This novel brings a sense of family and community together. A feeling of nostalgia washed over me many times, as reading this made me think of the times where people looked out for one another a lot more, and strong family ties were more prevalent.

There are touching moments, I wiped away tears more than once. This book is beautifully written. Strong characterization, stunning plot, and at times I held my breath, unsure of what would happen next. Fair warning, readers–this book is going to grab hold of you tight, and won’t let go even after the end. I find myself still thinking about Callie, Danny, and the rest of the crew at the fire station. Sparks lives up to it’s name, in every sense of the word. This is a story that can be read over and over. It’s a keeper!

If you love contemporary romances that have tendencies to bring out tears of joy, gut wrenching pangs of fear, and a powerful love story, let Sparks light up your life. Don’t miss this stunning novel!

When tragedy strikes Michele Windsor’s world, she is forced to uproot her life and move across the country to New York City, to live with the wealthy, aristocratic grandparents she’s never met. In their old Fifth Avenue mansion filled with a century’s worth of family secrets, Michele discovers a diary that hurtles her back in time to the year 1910. There, in the midst of the glamorous Gilded Age, Michele meets the young man with striking blue eyes who has haunted her dreams all her life – a man she always wished was real, but never imagined could actually exist. And she finds herself falling for him, into an otherworldly, time-crossed romance.

Michele is soon leading a double life, struggling to balance her contemporary high school world with her escapes into the past. But when she stumbles upon a terrible discovery, she is propelled on a race through history to save the boy she loves – a quest that will determine the fate of both of their lives.

What would you do if your true love were born a hundred years before you? Sixteen-year-old Michele Windsor finds out. When her mother dies, she moves across the country to live with her wealthy grandparents in New York. There, she’s surrounded with opulence, a first for her.

Michele is grieving, of course, but then something very strange happens. She gets transported back in time to the fascinating Gilded Age—1910. At a fancy ball, she makes eye contact with the young man who has haunted her dreams for years, and it’s a magical moment. Philip pulls her aside, equally entranced. They develop a friendship and more. She gets yanked back to her present but finds her way back to him periodically. These are two completely endearing characters. Philip is so respectful and romantic he sets a new standard. Michele is his equal, deserving of this great guy, and the chemistry between them is amazing. When they get separated, it’s heart wrenching.

The descriptions of the era, as well as those of the twenties and forties enrich the story and make the world of the characters realistic. Michele’s adventures in the past are interesting. The subplot adds intrigue with its family mystery. Supporting characters are just right.

This is a fast-paced book, hard to put down, and so well written. It’s moving emotionally and lovely in presentation. The author is a singer/songwriter, and the original songs mentioned in the book can be found online. I look forward to reading the sequel to this great story and highly recommend this book.

“To Conall Brannagh.”

Ewan took the bottle from his father. “Who?”

“Conall Brannagh,” Patrick repeated. “If your mother had chosen him over me, none of us would be here tonight.”

It’s Christmas Eve, and the Collins siblings have given their father a precious gift. All seven have gathered together to spend the night in his apartment above the family pub, the warm, loving home where Patrick and Sunday raised their large brood.

You’ve witnessed each child find their happy-ever-after. Now gather ’round the tree and share a bottle of Jameson with the Collins family while Patrick shares the story of how he won the heart of Sunday, his true love, his soul mate…and the mother of his seven Wild Irish.

From the introduction to the very end, I was smiling. Every word was special and the whole story felt like home. It’s Christmas time and Patrick’s children have given him the best gift ever. They have all returned home to spend Christmas Eve with him at their family home.

Patrick hasn’t been himself lately. All of his children have found love and have started lives of their own. While he’s thrilled and loves his extended family, he misses the closeness of having his children all under one roof. They have always been a very close knit family and he misses them. But it’s not just the loss of his children; it is the time of the year that also brings him down, but also brings him much joy. Christmas was the time of year that he fell in love with his wife, Sunday. The season always brings her to mind and this year around the tree with his children he’s going to share their love story.

What an amazing story. The way it was told, I could feel the love coming off the pages. This is possibly the sweetest short story I’ve ever read. I always knew Patrick loved his wife, but now I learned how they fell in love. I was taken back to the first moment Patrick sets eyes on Sunday. All of Patrick’s joy, sorrow, pain and finally love are wonderfully written. Ms. Carr has written a short story worthy of traditional Irish tales, a treasure to be told for years to come.

Did I want a longer story? Of course; I can never get enough of this huge loving family. Although it is a very short story, it didn’t skimp on plot and the pacing was phenomenal. I felt as if I was sitting around the tree enjoying a sip of Jameson Irish Whiskey right alongside them. I couldn’t have asked for more, and I’m thrilled that Patrick had his moment in the spotlight.

Wild Irish Christmas may be the last in the series, but it could be read at the beginning of the series too. Ms. Carr has written it in a way that nothing is given away of the children’s individual stories. I’m revitalized and want to reread all the novels. I want to fall in love with them all over again. No matter the time of year, this family’s love can be enjoyed all year long.

When gnomes takes up residence under a house in a suburban neighborhood, a human family realizes the wild creatures aren’t your normal garden variety.

They’re a new breed, a mutated invasive species infiltrating North America. The animals are worse than rats, bats, possums, or raccoons. They’re extremely territorial and skilled with bows and poison arrows. When an unemployed dad is tasked with ridding his house of the nasty little pests he realizes he’s got his work cut out for him. The chore proves one that endangers not only his property value, but the lives of his family.

How far would you go to protect your family if your household was under siege?

Reading Suburban Gnome Invasion is like jumping into a cold lake on a hot summer day. A shock at first as you adjust to this new environment but once you’re fully immersed you’ll quickly get caught up in the intense conflict between the gnomes and Arnaldur and his family. This story is especially satisfying for anyone who has ever battled any kind of pest in their home. Bedbugs, cockroaches, fleas and ants have nothing on gnomes.

In a work as short as this one every word matters and Ms. Jansen excelled at packing a fascinating cast of characters into less than a dozen pages. The dialogue is clever and had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion.

I walked away wondering how humans first discovered the existence of gnomes in this universe and how the Department of Wildlife became responsible for gnome inquiries. Every conflict has more than one side to it. I also wonder what the gnomes would have to say about what happened. How much would they understand? Is there something going on in gnome civilization that would explain why the humans in this universe are suddenly dealing with so many more of them than usual?

The bottom line: this story is begging for a sequel. Hopefully Ms. Jansen agrees with me and has one in the works! In the meantime, if you’re looking for something that will be as fresh and funny on your tenth read as it was on your first look no further than Suburban Gnome Invasion.

Harper’s Discovery by Em Woods

A sensual dance at a night club is only the beginning of the tango Harper and Pitt are pairing up for. Ms. Wood builds the tempo in this sexually charged short, dials it back down and immediately turns the heat right back up. Not unlike a roller-coaster, you’ll walk away a little breathless. Harper puts up a good front that he doesn’t need a new boyfriend after he tells his ex to hit the bricks. That’s fine because Pitt isn’t looking for a part-time playmate either. I thought Pitt put it succinctly when he said “You are mine. And tonight I’m going to show you why.” Ms. Woods has become one of my favorite M/M writers because of her characterization and clever story lines. Harper’s Discovery is no exception. The story line of Pitt and Harper becoming a couple is hot with some mild BDSM elements but there’s a whole other sub-plot that she sneaks in that gives their novella real substance. Dynamic chemistry is good but it’s how they deal with “life” outside the bedroom that proves their worth.

Wicked Reflection by Hank Edwards

Moving into a house with a history can be an exciting new venture or, in Kirk’s case, a paranormal adventure with potentially deadly consequences. Strange mirror messages are the least of his worries when things that go bump in the night turn out to be flesh and blood who have no qualms with spilling more blood. Who can Kirk trust? The sexy bad boy neighbor, Alan, comes on fast and strong but he clearly has a past. Whereas, Detective Lance is asking a lot of questions but he seems interested in keeping Kirk safe while solving a year old murder case. Someone isn’t telling the whole truth but they both know how best to distract Kirk from digging too deep. Author Hank Edwards doesn’t just tease you with a quick glance into these characters lives even if this is a short story. Wicked Reflection is the longest of the shorts in this collection and the detail is incredible. The minute Kirk receives his first message from beyond I was hooked to see who was communicating with Kirk and why. The story takes several twists and turns but it all comes together in an exciting and satisfying conclusion.

Harlan’s Ryde by Haven Fellows

Who could blame Harlan for wanting to throw Ryder out of his house ASAP when he shows up out the blue seven years after ripping Harlan’s heart into tiny unrecognizable pieces? Too bad it’s that not quite mended organ that also suddenly beats a little stronger when Ryder goes all smirky alpha on him. I had a love/annoyed relationship with Ryder. I couldn’t hate him but I was very upset with the way he stomped all over poor Harlan’s sincere proposal in the beginning. Having said that, they were college kids at the time. They’re expected to do stupid stuff, right? When he puts time, effort and money into finding Harlan, though, I had to give him a pass. Seriously, this guy is so sure (and yet unsure) of himself I couldn’t decide if I wanted to laugh or sock him in the arm on Harlan’s behalf. In the end I decided to simply keep reading and see how Harlan would handle him. I knew it would take a lot more than sweet talk to win Harlan over but as Ryder himself put it “I do love a challenge”. Ms. Fellow’s writing is so fun and vivid it was easy to see that Harlan and Ryder had both matured over the seven year separation. Harlan may be drawn to Ryder like a bee to honey but he didn’t make it easy on him. If you follow Ms. Fellows on the social sites you can hear her vivacious personality come through in her characters dialogue and chemistry. She’s mentioned that her first solo project will be out soon. The new story details Harlan’s best friend, Ritchie’s journey to what’s sure to be a snarky but fun HEA. After meeting him here, I can’t wait to see how he gets there! You don’t want to miss Harlan and Ryder’s story. It’s clever, heart warming and a delicious sampling of a terrific story teller.

Off The Beaten Path by JR Boyd

Is there a better beginning for a forever relationship than two people who have been best friends since childhood? They know all about one another: The good, the bad and all the reasons to take a chance to see if the feelings are mutual. Mitch and Colby are best buds who have kept their feelings for another a secret far too long. A hot summer day, a dirt road swimmin’ hole and a few beers give them motivation and opportunity to test more than the ponds temperature. Their tentative and teasing touches put me in mind of Robert Frost’s poem The Road Not Taken. The men have come to a point in the relationship where simple friendship isn’t enough anymore but are they willing to take the steps that can never been taken back? Author JR Boyd is unapologetic in his writing M/M stories. When Mitch and Colby mutually decide to pursue the chemistry between them it’s hot, dirty and graphic…with a soundtrack that perfectly sets the mood for this beautiful story. Even before the men act on their sexual chemistry I could feel their bond that began as children. They way they talk to one another, the joking, the impromptu duets; it all gave an honest sense of realism to their story. I could see myself re-reading this later.

The Park at Sunset by Lee Brazil

One of the more solemn stories of this anthology, The Park at Sunset took me back to happier times for three men who loved each other as youth, never considering the future might not hold plans for all three of them together. Morgan had convinced himself that Jason couldn’t want him if Paul wasn’t with them as well. An invitation to a gallery opening and painting that captured a perfect moment in time, serve as the needed catalyst to send Morgan back home to Colorado and a reunion he never imagined would happen. This is a very emotional and vivid story with a happy, healing ending but fans of Lee Brazil’s writing have come to expect that kind of depth in his writing. Mr. Brazil has a talent for digging deep into a characters psyche and pulling their deepest emotions to the surface in a way that’s almost as heart wrenching to the reader as it is to the characters. I know when I read one of his stories I’ll close the last page knowing my heart has been touched, that my soul has been affected. Bottom line: There is no light and fluffy to a Lee Brazil story. But there is poetry between the pages. One of many poignant lines from this short that was a total awe moment for me was “As a kiss melted into a kiss and a caress to culmination, no words were spoken”. The Park at Sunset is a short story that will be with you long after you finish this anthology.

The Story Orgy authors are a wonderful blend of unique writing voices who compliment one another. You’ll be glad you picked up this newest anthology to sample their writing talent. Do yourself a favor and get your copy of Word Play. You’ll laugh, cry and sigh from page one to two-hundred fifty one!

When Kelly and Brandon rediscover each other on Facebook after twenty years apart, it sparks an attraction that even distance can’t extinguish. Do they truly have a future, or is this just a Facebook affair?

Kelly Littleton takes the plunge and finally joins Facebook to socialize without the limits that her hearing impairment gives her. On a whim, she looks up a childhood friend. In sending him that first message, she ignites the memories of a crush from twenty years ago. But will they turn into the flames of romance, or end up the ashes of a Facebook affair?

Brandon Hopkins has a lot on his plate. A recent divorce, a pregnant sister, and now, he realizes he’s in love with a woman who lives states away. Can he overcome the boundaries of internet romance to make this desire turn into something real, or will adversity and distance be their undoing?

Love Request starts off with eight year-old Kelly Littleton on her first day at a new school. She’s self-conscious about her hearing aids and her deafness. Instantly, I able to get inside little Kelly’s head and feel her emotions and insecurities. She wasn’t just a fictional character. She was like a real person. Childhood Kelly reminded me a bit of myself at that age and I connected with this character.

In the second grade, Kelly had been picked on and teased by two bratty little girls, Caitlyn and Lindsay. But Kelly found a friend in Lindsay’s brother Brandon.

When adult Kelly’s friend insists that she should socialize more and urges her to get on Facebook, Kelly decides to look up her old childhood friend. Throughout the whole book we flash back and forth between childhood versions of Kelly and Brandon and adult Kelly and Brandon. It was almost like a reunion romance story (and I’m a sucker for those) except that they met as children and never had a chance to act on it.

As characters go, Kelly was strong, confident (in her adult years), forgiving, and an all around nice person. Brandon surprised me as a hero. I’m so used to reading about macho heroes that it was a nice change to read about a realistic man who had a boring job and a boring, normal life, and found the love of his life. In a way, these characters showed that you don’t have to be a superhero to find love like the kind in the movies.

Lindsay was a character that I liked and hated at the same time. Adult Lindsay was just as much of a brat as child Lindsay. She was stuck up, lazy, and judgmental. However, some unforeseen circumstances lead her to open her eyes and become a better person. It was surprising to watch her grow as a person.

The story as a whole read like a non-fiction memoir. It was realistic, emotional, and actually inspiring. I loved seeing Kelly’s life as a deaf person and how she didn’t allow it to limit her options. There were a few typos but the depth of the plot and the characters had me overlook that. It was one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. I highly recommend this and am looking forward to reading other works by this author.

Unable to resist the lure of finding her niece, Josie picks up the crumbs of clues left behind. With her old friend and savior, pod-hunter Quin Aguilar at her side, she seeks out Fern Betterncourt who is assumed to be sleeping for over a hundred years.

From an unlikely source, Fern’s location is discovered, and together with her husband, Josie seeks out her last link to her past. Will Fern want to be found? And will finding Fern be enough to bury the ghosts that haunt Josie? Can Josie bring herself to destroy her last remaining family in order to save herself?

The Eternal Knot, the final chapter in the Lancaster trilogy. Will Josie finally rest in peace in the new future she lives in?

The Lancaster family have ruled the world for three generations. John, the current president, is gradually handing control back to the individual countries. Josie is John’s three hundred year old wife and thanks to the invention of the stasis pod Josie has a biological age of twenty-seven.

Trouble follows Josie. Her attempt to find the last remaining member of her family causes chaos to her friends, country and most particularly her husband. John and Josie are very much individuals, but the love is evident from the first paragraph of the first page. Love drives their lives, but this is by no means the main force of the book. John is an indulgent husband, but when politics are involved Josie knows she must toe the line – but sometimes she forgets.

The Eternal Knot is an appropriate title for a book that twists and turns, throwing up the unexpected, then turning back on itself. Every time I thought I’d got things sorted, another sub plot appeared forcing me to continue reading to find out what happened.

I loved how everything linked together, even though at times I couldn’t fathom how the author would find a way for linking various events to the main story. For instance, why the appearance of an ex-girlfriend of John’s? What possible link could she have to the mayhem that was Josie’s life? But T.K. Toppin cleverly wove this woman into the plot.

John’s family help and thwart the couple as they travel through danger – both physical and political. Their friends are staunch allies in their quest for Josie’s past and present life.

This is not a romance, although romance plays its part.  The Eternal Knot is a science fiction story with a difference. The despotic ruler shows a warm, soft side, his wife swears like a trooper, looks like an angel and can defend herself better than most men. The weapons of the future are ingenious and the Citadel of the Lancaster ruled planet is very easy to imagine from the way it eases into the story.

I would suggest this book is a definite must for lovers of science fiction.

The best laid plans…

Halli Sanders spent two years planning the trip of a lifetime to Italy. Her itinerary did not include being stranded by her siblings, kidnapped by a sexy American movie star, dodging bullets, or fleeing criminals in a car chase around Lake Como. And that’s just in the first three hours.

…often go awry.

Trent Tomlin put his movie career on hold to investigate his brother’s murder-ruled-suicide at his Italian villa. He’s closing in on the suspects when an American tourist unwittingly films the murder of the retired cop helping him. The killers will stop at nothing to get the evidence–including holding Halli’s family as collateral.

Life’s a little different unscripted.

Thrust into the role of real-life hero, Trent finds himself falling for the Plain Jane whose beauty blossoms with every challenge they face. But how can he keep the evidence from falling into the wrong hands and get justice for his brother and friend without betraying Halli and her family?

Don’t you just love it when the first book of a series has you itching to buy the second? And the third? Lost in Italy is that kind of book. With likeable, believable characters who find themselves in extremely extraordinary circumstances, this is my favorite Stacey Joy Netzel book to date.

The suspense is riveting, but the characters make this book. I particularly enjoyed the motivation and thoughts underlying Trent’s apparent superficiality. It made him come alive and took him from the “man on the big screen” to a man you’d want in your life. I’ve never been attracted to a movie star before. The depth of his character made me want a happily-ever-after between him and Halli. I loved how Halli develops throughout this book, going from an uptight control freak to a normal person willing to take acceptable risks.

Ms. Netzel does a great job painting a picture of two realistically flawed people and how they used their ingrained (and necessary) coping mechanisms to not only survive, but to thrive and move beyond their flaws. Changing flaws into assets is very appealing. Oh…and the romance was so good, too.

I’m looking forward to her next Italy suspense. Lost in Italy—buy it, you’ll like it.

Outlaws of Love is a moving and exiting love story that stretches the boundaries of the ordinary and leads the reader on a journey of hope. This story is of joy, profound love and devotion, courage and strength. I was swept up in the sexy romance, and the emotionally powerful plots. This ambitious tale truly hit a home run. I chuckled, squirmed and shed a tear, and know I won’t forget this story.

Infusing her writing with a pristine, fresh prose, Em Petrova draws the reader deftly into a landscape of the heart and mind. Her powerfully engaging work is a refreshing delight. Here is an example of her luscious descriptions: “The sun sank over the lip of the land, retracting its warm fingers as it did.”

Outlaws of Love is the first in the Hollis Boys series. My advice is, don’t miss this one.
