The unexpected duchess

Archibald Salisbury, son of a viscount, war hero, and proficient in the proper ways of aristocratic society, has received orders for his most challenging mission: Genevieve, Duchess of Blakesley. How she inherited a duchy isn’t his problem. Turning her into a perfect duchess is. But how can he keep his mind on business when her beauty entices him toward pleasure?

It was impossible, unprecedented…and undeniably true. Genevieve is now a “duke”, or, rather, a duchess. So what is she to do when the ton eyes her every move, hoping she’ll make a mistake? Genevieve knows she has brains and has sometimes been told she has beauty, but, out of her depth, she calls on an expert. And what an expert, with shoulders broad enough to lean on, and a wit that matches her own. Archie is supposed to teach her to be a lady and run her estate, but what she really wants to do is unladylike—run into his arms.

One possible answer to the lack of viagra pill flavor and low toxicity. “Trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear” is how Genevieve feels when she inherits a neglected duchy and becomes Duchess of Blakesley.

She is the neglected daughter of a wastrel duke. She has been raised by servants. She’s had no training in how to be a duchess much less in how to tend to the business of the duchy that has been shamefully neglected. However, because of a special dispensation granted generations earlier, the direct heir, regardless of gender, inherits the duchy of Blakesley.

Though neglected by her father, she has a grandmother who has confidence in Genevieve, and she also has a godmother who sends her own steward to help Genevieve maneuver through the quagmire of the ton and the business of owning and managing of the duchy.

The steward, retired army captain Archibald Salisbury, estranged third son of a viscount, is not all that happy about having to go where his family might see him, but he arrives in London to do the task Genevieve’s godmother sent him to do.

Straight away, he sees a strategy is needed. His army training kicks in. He sees Genevieve as a raw recruit with no ammunition–she has no suitable wardrobe; she does not know how to be haughty, act grandiose, or give terse orders to the servants; she has no clue about how to do duchy business, last, but not least, she draws him like a magnet. She’s beautiful, sensible, kind, honest, direct, sensitive, resilient, and has a delightful sense of humor. Consequently, even though they are in the same house, he communicates with her by letter if possible rather than be in her company—great way for the author to move the story along.

He guides her through all the social and business hazards of mid-nineteenth century England. She learns well, but her faux pas in her personal relationship with him throws a spanner in the works that creates a conflict that sends him running. Now she’s very capable, titled, wealthy, but so alone—calls herself an idiot.

How Megan Frampton weaves a love story throughout the story and how she resolves the conflicts to give Archie and Genevieve their happy-ever-after is a work of art. Good reading!

The illegitimate son of a Texas ranching dynasty, Ridge Lockhart left home ten years ago with one goal: to become more successful than the father who never accepted him.

Mission accomplished, but now he’s back at the Silver Feather Ranch for a wedding—three days of best man duty until he can hightail it out. Then he spies Kaia Alzate, and suddenly leaving isn’t quite so appealing.

Kaia Alzate grew up the daughter of the ranch foreman, servants to the mighty Lockharts in the mansion. Back then, she followed Ridge around like a puppy. Now, she’s fighting the attraction she feels for this sexy CEO. She’s determined not to make a big mistake—but when Ridge takes her in his arms she’s stunned…could he be the man she’s waited for all along?

Lori Wilde’s beautiful writing style, using just the right words, made me feel as if I were right inside the hearts and minds of Ridge Lockhart’s and Kaia Alzata’s.

Hunky Highlanders, a murder plot and a spicy and exciting romance – what more could I ask for?

First, this is easily a standalone read. It wasn’t until I was a quarter of the way into the book that I recognized some of the names and realized this is part of a series! Eventually, Ms. Sands had me visiting with Greer, Alpin and Saidh again and it made me want to read their story once more. As it is, they were instrumental in helping Murine and Dougall and his many brothers in solving a mystery and correcting a wrong that was perpetuated upon Murine. They didn’t distract or undermine the romance between the hero and heroine at all, but definitely enhanced it. Well, they brought some humor too, especially Saidh and her bread lesson. That cracked me up.

The slow romance that built between Dougall and Murine was delightful, fun and entertaining. I actually enjoyed her fainting spells and Dougall’s responses, I liked the waterfall scenes, well, most of them, I liked his reaction to her wearing pants, and even though the arrow wound was a serious matter, I liked what happened in the story after that. I even giggled when Dougall’s brothers gave him a hard time because they knew before him what was going on.

When the great plot resolution occurred, I actually started feeling bad for one of the bad guys. I thought he might be redeemable because he wasn’t a total lost cause but unfortunately, the plot had to take its due because he was mostly a lost cause. Poor Murine.

And for those readers who enjoy sensual build up and Scottish seduction, I think they’re going to be very pleased. Dougall is no slouch out of his kilt.

Falling for the Highlander is a totally and completely wonderful romantic adventure. I like a strong heroine and Murine proves herself time and time again. There’s so many parts of this novel that are enjoyable it was hard to pick just a few to share. Ms. Sands always makes me feel good about her characters and they’re usually easy to fall in love with. She has once again succeeded in delivering an exciting and well written journey as Murine escapes a dire fate only to discover a love she’d given up hoping for. I’m so happy I read this book and I have no doubt many readers are going to snap up this novel too. It’s great fun.

Love, action and romance. One of the things I appreciated about this book is that it is stand alone. I didn’t need to have read the first couple of books to understand this one.

Overall, I found Ms. Jordan’s characters to be interesting and the story was sexy and exciting.

Handsome, wealthy, and sublimely confident, Colin Gray, the new Earl of Egremoor, has vowed to unmask the rabble-rousing pamphleteer, Lady Justice, the thorn in England’s paw. And he’ll stop at nothing.

Attract.
Smart, big-hearted, and passionately dedicated to her work, Lady Justice longs to teach her nemesis a lesson in humility. But her sister is missing, and a perilous journey with her archrival into unknown territory just might turn fierce enemies into lovers.

The Earl, part of the “Devil’s Duke’ series, introduces a pair more likely to become sparring partners than a romantic couple. Indeed, the circumstances they confront are far more serious than romantic: and beyond the usual scope of political intrigue as well. Emily, the self-styled “Lady Justice’ has a terribly personal reason for reaching out to the duke for help.

She’s a ‘pamphleteer’ in the early 1800’s London- struggling for the rights of women. She’s identified various members of the Falcon club (a gentlemen’s club) as thwarting her endeavors and… Colin, the just-stepping up to Dukedom, is among those on the ‘other side.’

But when her own sister goes missing somewhere in the wilds of Scotland, it is Colin she reaches out to. He might be her nemesis, but he’s no fool…and Scotland is by no means as tame as London!

The complex heroine is especially appealing. She’s firm in her beliefs but so resolute toward her goals that she’ll bend to ‘using’ someone she considers ‘against’ her. She’s smart: she keeps up with news, uses her maid to keep up with gossip, and knows all of the goings-on of the day ; but in her own, familiar city.. Scotland might be a whole other world…

And Colin is equally admirable, not because he steps in to assist a lady; but because of his own complexity. He must put aside self-doubt, as well as (to some degree) family expectation, but he becomes as firm in his resolve as she.

The Earl is incredibly engaging, primarily for its deep and determined characters, but also for its wonderful backdrop – exactly as expected, yet more. The plot is completely unpredictable. This is simply a super read.

She refuses to jeopardize that by hitching herself to the wrong man. Suitors are plentiful, but none of them has ever looked quite as tempting as the family friend who just rode into town…and none has looked at her with such intensity and heat.

Duchess. That’s the nickname Kent Randolph gave Portia when she was a young girl. Now she’s a stunning, intelligent woman—and Kent has learned his share of hard lessons. But convincing her to trust him with her heart, not just her passion, will be the greatest challenge he’s known—and one he intends to win…

With a bitter assumption of love and relationships from her mother’s example Portia is adamant about not getting married. Though this book didn’t quite leave me breathless I did find it entertaining and to be a well written story. The first conversation was between Portia and her younger single sister Regan commenting on Portia’s need to find a man. For any reader that has read previous books by Ms. Jenkins this book pretty much follows suit. There isn’t any surprise or suspense as to will there be a mate for Portia; you know there will be. I would have liked for the story to have started with a neutral subject like the planning of her aunt and uncle’s anniversary dinner or the arrival of Kent Randolph and then later during the relationship between Portia and Kent there could have been some resistance and her hesitation to be involved then be brought up. Emphases on Portia’s underlying mother abandonment issues were repeated through out the book with no resolution; and even though the majority of the book was on Portia’s lack of a love life her relationship with Kent grew so quickly it was all a turn off for me.

I didn’t feel the connection between Portia and Kent. I like that they spent time together, getting to know each other but the physical seemed quick and rush. Men around town were interested in Portia but she paid them no mind but quickly found interest in Kent not even knowing his past. Her hesitation to not marry was so quickly forgotten. I would have liked to have saw something more personal and heartfelt from Portia as to why she so quickly changed her mind about marriage.

I did like that Portia is a strong and independent woman. She realized she was good at bookkeeping and set a goal to open her own business doing bookkeeping for the neighboring businesses. She wasn’t a lady waiting around for a man to take care of her. She had plenty men wanting to marry her but she enjoyed working and having her independence. Her sister Regan also was a woman of independence by delivering mail twice a week with her mule Josephine, which was not kindly looked upon in such early times. Even though their mother disappointed them their aunt and uncle did a good job in bringing them up to be self sufficient ladies.

There were sub-stories that happened around town that gave a filling story. The events that unfold with Uncle Rhine purchasing Old Man Blanchard’s land gave the story more interest because it built conflict and gave something to the stotyline in addition to the romance. There were several characters introduced in the story that I found it distracting trying to keep up with all the names and to figure out who was relevant to the story.

I didn’t read book one in The Old Series, but I was able to follow the storyline okay. However to get the full history and background of the characters it may be best to read book one first. The author has a gift for writing and story telling. The Fontaine and Carmichael’s bring about a fascinating ongoing story as part of The Old Series. I enjoyed the loving family atmosphere, the western setting is so real and the author’s knowledge about riding horses was fascinating to read. I would like to continue with the series just to see will there be more revealed about Portia and Regan’s mother and is there any hope for their relationship to be repaired.

This is a book that I would recommend to a reader that enjoys a love story that is simple with no frills and definitely those that have read book one in The Old Series.

A Wedding for Christmas gives readers both giggles and glow. It’s a feel good novel with a message of love and optimism amongst family and friends and the community in which Katie lives, and to which Ryder returns. There’s also a delightful bit of humor and lighthearted banter between the hero and heroine and the sparks between them are explosive.

Ryder is the quintessential bad-boy turned good who warily comes back to a town that judged him as a youth. The chip on his shoulder is pretty large and it’s actually validated by revealed secrets as the story unfolds. Ms. Wilde has imbued her hero with an emotional depth and maturity that appealed to me. I wanted him to have his own, personal happy-ever-after because his hurt and pain became very real to me. Ryder is a well written hero.

Katie was more like bubbles and sunshine. She has a serious side to her, absolutely, but it’s balanced with her fascination with all things Ryder. I liked how her past came to a perfect circle with the hero. I enjoyed watching the progression of her puppy love turning into a solid, mature, adult love. Yet, that unsure girl of the past has turned into a woman who combines sexy with charming enthusiasm and confidence, and she knows who she wants. The days of pillow kissing are past, and knocking Ryder’s socks off is her future – if she can get past her own internal conflicts.

I think the strongest asset of this novel is the dialogue between Katie and Ryder. It brought them to life. Then the miracles that take place with the backdrop of the Christmas season are emotionally magical. I don’t mean magic, magic. I mean, when things seem insurmountable, and the emotional conflict is at its most serious, something happens; people change, there are second chances, hope springs eternal and readers are treated to a warm, fuzzy glow when happiness is realized. Being the well written characters that they are, theirs isn’t a perfect happiness. There’s a bit of grumpiness too, but even that was charming.

A Wedding for Christmas embodies what holiday romances are all about and should not be missed. This novel made me smile and made me feel happy. It’s rich, vibrant and filled with all the best things romance has to offer. Don’t miss it!
