Young love between those not allowed to be together leads to some serious trouble. The couple, Vivi and Finn, run into each other years after the passionate nights that led to disaster, and their meeting is filled with stormy emotions. These two characters are multi-faceted and have their secrets. Luckily, the misunderstandings between them do not take too long to resolve. They are reasonable people, and both experience a certain amount of growth as they experience some of the darker sides of Victorian London. Right away, readers are certain to like these two, for their caring natures. The sparks between them are understandable.
Important themes in this story include helping underprivileged children, class relations, betrayal, friendship, and growing apart due to growing older and experiencing harrowing situations. These themes blend with perfection around the major theme of love between two people who come from incompatible backgrounds and yet have enough in common naturally to be drawn together.
While these ideas play out, readers will be familiar with some of them, but other historical information will be new and interesting to discover. These historical tidbits bring to light little-known facts and help to create the world in which these characters reside. There is a social message here, and as the characters work within this with their goals, it enhances their likability.
Suspense is built because the main characters have changed over the years. But has their love for each other died? Can it possibly be revived, and if so, how will it be expressed between two people who are now so different? And what will become of the children they are trying to help?
The complications, of course, add intrigue to the story, and the author resolves them beautifully. There are enough twists and turns in this novel to keep readers guessing.
As for the style, Finn and Vivi’s story is written clearly with emotionally-provocative language. The dialogue truly helps readers to understand motives. The subplot gives an urgency to the characters’ cause and brings out their best.
This is a quite enjoyable story written by a talented author. I would recommend this book to those who love historical romance.
