Ms. Lynch writes a smooth flowing story with lyrical sentences. She has put an Irish brogue in this story and you can almost feel the burr on your tongue as you read the lines. The town she’s created sounds like a lot of fun. The people living there are “capers” and it’s quaint and small. What other town would have a Halloween celebration all month with lots of activities? Then there’s the dancing witches…

When Nick meets the woman who caused his cop partner to commit suicide there, he’s determined to ignore her. That can be hard to do when she lives next door and is attractive.

The love story is sweet, he finds out he had some wrong assumptions on that case he was angry about, and there’s child sex abuse involved. It’s a lot like life: each person has their own view and makes judgements based on what they know. The problem is they may not know everything. This story points that out in more than one way and it’s a good lesson for all.

This is a very good read even though it’s short. It’s thought-provoking and the problems fictionalized are present in today’s world. The message here seems to be do something about it, and that’s a good way to live. This one is a keeper for me. The ending is great.

This is the first book in a new mystery series and it’s off to a nice start. I like the fact that Valentine knows magic. It means she’s good at observing, sleight of hand, and more. She’s a character that grows on you. She’s almost like a ghost: She has no ID, no social security card, and no birth certificate. She can’t work a traditional job. She’s following her mother to change that. But she’s not the only one following her.

I also liked Rico. He’s a bit strange, always seems to be there when she needs him, and he’s more than he seems. I hope he’ll be in future stories with Valentine.

This is a well thought story that has Valentine trying to run a con on her mother and the man she lives with. Her current flame is a scammer himself but on a much larger scale. He’s so big the FBI is after him. There were times when I wondered whether Valentine would even survive. She’s in danger from more sources than her hand has fingers, so author has to do a very careful balancing act here.

When you start reading, you don’t stop. The story moves fast, there are odd situations all through it, and Valentine keeps rolling with the punches. Magic even plays its part in this story. I found it to be a very good read and will be watching for the next one in the series.

This story is set in London in the 16th century. The author does a very good job of getting the atmosphere of the period in place. It’s not a pleasant place for those who are short on money. Those with money tend to use other people to enhance their place in society. There are those who live on the streets, those who man carts to try to earn some money, rat catchers who eat their catch, muckrakers, prostitutes, and more on these streets. When someone dies in an alchemist’s house, there’s no need to look further. Bianca is the murderer, of course.

The author has made Bianca a complicated character. She’s so into the chemistry of herbs and trying to create salves for healing that she ignores her love. She’s not politically correct, so the constable is more than willing to hang her for the murder. No one is going to save her except herself. John is willing to help, but she won’t let him. She’s going to regret that.

Trouble from the past is tied into this murder. Ms. Lawrence has done a good job of showing the underhanded dealings of the merchants as well as generally showing the nature of the folk living on the poor side of town. You can feel the darkness and hopelessness that abounds in the shadows. It’s a dangerous place at night and even in the day.

This story is not for the weak of heart. There are some ugly truths here and justice does prevail, even if it is administered by God and not by the law. Ms. Lawrence’s story will stay in my mind for a while, as I chew over the details. If you read it, you won’t forget it.

Her characters are real, some a little too real. It didn’t take me long to read this entire book. I didn’t want to set it down and do something else, I wanted to see what was going to happen.

Calli didn’t expect to make an enemy as soon as she stepped in the hotel, but that’s what happened. The chief security guard thought his wife had sent her. After all, she looked like her but was a bit more filled out. Callie had no idea what Mac was talking about, but she knew she didn’t like him and his pushy ways.

As the story goes along, Ms. Curtis introduces you to the madman. You don’t know who he is and you aren’t quite sure what he’s trying to do but he still manages to scare you.

The author paces the story well, keeps spiking your adrenaline with the close misses, and it’s only with the help of the high level security agency that they have a fighting chance. She gives you strong characters and a romance to keep the story interesting. Ms. Curtis did a very nice job on this one.

She pairs him with a nun who is willing to help him find his sister and make amends for what she thought had happened to her. Sister Teresa, though has some secrets of her own.

This is a tale of a mix of good and bad and how love reconciles things. I felt like the romances were too rushed to be real. Just a few days together and everybody is in love. Under high stress situations it can happen, but it seemed just a bit too neat to me.

The author’s writing style is smooth and easy to read. She adds enough excitement to keep your attention. The story was good, I enjoyed the banter between cowboy and nun and it made my heart soften to see them take in a little girl who survived a tragedy. Overall it was good western with two unusual heroes.

She’s a strong woman with a good head for planning and organization. The men in her life are mostly nice and good friends with her, but it takes a while for her to find love.

Wagon trips were hell. There were food shortages, wagon problems, sometimes illness, and no rest for anyone. When Lorena starts trying to get a group together to travel with her, she never realized she was developing a small, mixed family. She finds a young brother and sister and a Negro couple, and finds another wagon train that will let them join them. The problem is that there is a pregnant woman on the new train that is having problems from the travelling. When Lorena hatches another idea, the pregnant woman and her family joins Lorena’s little family and they look for a place to settle.

The characters are strong, work hard, defend themselves and offer each support. Lorena needs that since she never learned how to cook! Now she’s got free meals everywhere.

The pace is strong, there’s plenty of hard work and action to keep your interest and, while there are sad spots, for the most part this is a positive story about life in the west and how settlement changed it.

Mr. Fell writes a tale about two rabbis who are looking for work. It’s a humorous look at life with Jewish touches. I know nothing about the Jewish faith, so his glossary at the back of the book was quite helpful. Most of it I understood without referencing that. I found the story amusing.

There are two shuls in the local area and both are looking for a rabbi. There are men and women on the boards of both, and the applicants are one male and one female. When the vote is tied, the decided voter abstains from voting. They need help!

I’ve never thought about feminism being a factor in a Jewish environment. I’m used to men holding all the positions of importance (even in the Catholic life I grew up in) and was surprised they had a female rabbi. It gets even more complicated when the two rabbis’ begin to develop a romantic interest in each other.

Mr. Fell’s main character, Sam, has to walk the tangled path between the two shuls and try to maintain peace in each. I like how he handles the problem and resolves it with the best results you could hope for. While they are busy eating cheesecake and talking religious differences, you begin to find yourself chuckling and turning the page to see what happens next.

This is a good humorous read with some Jewish terminology that can mean more than one thing and a fun result at the end.

Ms. Daulton has written an easy romance read with a western setting. The story has a feeling of authenticity. It’s something that could happen when two people love each other and one is trying to protect the other. I found it to be an easy read and wanted to shove the two main characters together before they resolved their own issues.

Melody finds out Max is in back in town by accident. The ranch hands are sharing gossip and she knows they are talking about her. She braces them and finds out he has bought a neighboring run-down ranch. She’s still living at home but she’s become a horse breeder and is building her future stock. She works for her father to pay the costs for her and her stock. She decides she’ll go check out Max. That’s either a blessing or a big mistake.

Max has a reason he’s been away for so long but he’s hesitant to tell her. She’s demanding to be told the truth. He gives her part of his reasoning and then asks if she can wait for the rest. He wants to meet with her and her father for that part.

Mr. Daulton shows the conflicts clearly, lets you know the love isn’t dead, and even manages to help Melody convince her parents she knows what she wants. Anybody who has controlling parents will understand Melody’s predicament.

This novella is a short read but it’s worth it. It flows well, has a good story line, and ends well. Take a walk in Melody’s boots and pet her horse. It’ll make you feel better.

Annie Oakley is almost a legend in western history. This author’s account of her lets you get to know her personally. It’s even more enjoyable because the author lets her talk. She never had a formal education so while she could shoot well, she couldn’t read. She did learn how later in life. She’d worked a seamstress once, so she could make her own costumes. And when she married Frank Butler she’d found the love of her life. If only we all could be so lucky.

Mr. Marshall accurately portrays that era and mines the history that remains of Annie’s Oakley. She was born at a time of change in the world and she adapted. They travelled all over the world. She wasn’t fond of Venice because of all the water. Little facts like that made it fun to read.

This could have been a very dry historical read, but Mr. Marshall infused his characters with personalities and opinions and made the story alive. Annie and her husband Frank made a mean team. They made enough to live comfortably and her shooting skills were admired by all. In Europe, women weren’t supposed to be shooters. After she shot, she had their admiration.

I knew quite a bit about Annie before I read this book, but I learned several things along the way: How she didn’t like Venice, how she was unsecure when another young woman joined the show, and when her hair turned white. Mr. Marshall did a very nice job compiling the facts and presenting them in book. If you’ve ever wanted to read a good book about a competitive female shooter, here you are.

When practical-minded rancher Cole Witherspoon decides his ranch needs a woman’s touch, he goes about filling the vacancy in the most sensible way. He places a help-wanted ad. He never suspects just how many lessons he’ll learn when an out-of-work schoolteacher answers the ad.

Cherilyn Bixby is a sensible person, capable around the house, and pretty, but she makes the mistake of wearing her best dress to meet Cole–and his huge, undisciplined dog. She’s not overly fond of dogs, nor is her big, red cat. A cat that will not be living in the barn, no matter what Cole says.

Ms. Cunningham picks characters that are mismatched. They’re not from the same part of the world, they don’t have the same likes, and while they are both looking for companionship, they have some edges to take off. I like her feisty female character who takes no guff from anyone. She might have been a schoolteacher but she’s no shy lily. She’s more of a forget-me-not.

The author sends her to a house filled with men. There’s Cole, the good looking hunk who is looking for a wife to cook and clean; an uncle, an older brother and a younger nephew. Another thing she has to deal with is a monster dog that goes on the rounds with Cole. You get an inkling of trouble to come when she has arrived with a cat.

One of my favorite parts is when he tells her there are no animals allowed in the house; her cat will have to go in the barn. She informs him he can either take her to the hotel to catch the bus back or she’ll be sleeping in the barn with the cat. Such a sweet beginning, wouldn’t you say?

Her potential husband is quick to make decisions. The problem is that he doesn’t always think them out, he just reacts. This will come back to bite him in the butt further on in the story.

Ms. Cunningham writes a sweet romance story where the two cantankerous characters both agree to smooth out the rough spots and try together again. Cole is real inventive on how to apologize to Cherry for his previous actions. That’s another of my favorite parts of the story.
