She’s an orphan. She was abandoned as a baby and taken in by a couple who wanted and loved her. They’re gone now. She was married twice. Once to a bum and once to a very nice guy who had an epileptic fit and drowned in the hot tub. She’s off men now. She’s just doing her publicity work and she’s happy with that. But when she keeps running across pictures of her best boss and even the scrabble letters form her name, she knows she better go see Iris.

This author writes a very fast-paced story with short chapters. It reads up quickly and you wonder if the main character will get out of there alive. Claire see things. She also feels things. She’s learned to pay attention to these happenings; they have meaning for her. She’s also smart and thinks quickly which helps keep her alive. Mr. McEwen has no problem with using strong female characters in his story. The Native American male is just as strong but in other ways.

Iris lives up north in the woods of Canada. The author does a good job of weaving in a back story about dead Native American girls from the past and the various prejudices and characters of the current town. The mysticism that is worked in seems real. If you’ve ever had a wild animal look you in the eye for a while, you’d swear they are sending you a message. Most of the time, its leave me alone but that’s not what Claire sees.

There are wild animals, an escaped con, float planes and even a crazy cop in this story. From the beginning to the end, you’ll be flipping pages and wondering what will happen next. There’s good tension and suspense all the way through. After all the worry and trouble Mr. McEwen put his characters through, it was nice to read a positive ending. It may be happy ever after yet.

He’s a private eye with a partner. He’s an ex-cop and his partner is an ex-sheriff. They know their stuff. They’re doing pretty good at the new business.  So why would his partner steal diamonds?

This author is very good at creating suspense and confusion in his story. Everyone seems to be lying. Many are playing both sides. The new sheriff is manipulating him and he doesn’t even like him. The picture Mr. Talton paints is bleak, nasty, and evil. You have the Russian mafia, crooked politicians, bad FBI agents and more. The only one who is what he claims to be is David Mapstone, the main character.

They have video of Peralta shooting the other guard and racing away with the diamonds. David still doesn’t think Mike was stealing them for himself; he thinks its undercover assignment.  Nobody is being totally honest. A dead body from long ago is brought to David’s attention now. He was the one who found it as a rookie cop. Why it’s being brought up now is odd. As if he wasn’t busy enough trying to find his partner and get the truth from him, his wife gets in trouble. There’s enough stress in this story I’m surprised the characters lived through it.

This is a story with a lot of conflicts, a lot of side stories, a complicated plot and diamonds that were stolen from the FBI evidence room. You know not everyone will get out alive. The ending surprised me and I’m not entirely certain that it seemed like justice wasn’t served.  But all-in-all, the story was very good and ended as happily as could be expected.

When they haul in a potential suspect and she determines he’s not her man, she disappointed and feeling a bit bad that they accused him. He was glad to be cut free, but he offers to help if he can. She comes up with the idea she’ll travel with him and pretend to be his wife so she can try to locate the killer.

The reader will learn CB trash talk, learn the common terms for prostitutes, and learn about trucker bars. You’ll also find out just how far a person can go if they are determined. Both the cop and the killer are determined so the final confrontation is horrific, exciting, and a toss-up. You’ll keep flipping those pages until the end. Mr. Red knows how to keep your attention. Ms. Wright’s story maintains a good pace throughout the story. There’s extreme danger, odd encounters and an implacable enemy. When the kids are accosted in the desert, an odd being comes to their rescue. They are thankful, but they don’t trust him. And when the storm troopers show up, they don’t trust them either.

This is a new take on science fiction fantasies. This mad scientist is creating babies using the alien DNA and surrogate mothers. They raise the children without any emotion and try to bleed the human side dry.

The good characters are likeable; the bad ones are extremely ruthless. Yet, I still found myself drawn into the story and caring about them, even H.A.L.F. 9. He feels emotions but doesn’t know what to do with them. The teens are human and most likely be killed to keep them quiet. That doesn’t make you calm or well behaved. But when you’re isolated and can’t talk to your friends you can’t solve things very well either.

The ending was not what I expected and I’m not quite sure I liked it. However, this is the first book in the series and the author has set me up nicely with an interest in the next book. I bet that was her goal.

Ms. Swank starts the book with a great first sentence: “It all started when I saw myself dead.” She had my attention and she kept it until the end of the book. This is a great read. Rose is naïve, has never been kissed even though she’s twenty-four, and her mother still tells her what to do. She thinks about moving out but she doesn’t know where, nor can she leave her mother alone. Rose will grow up a lot before the end of this story.

The man she met at DMV is a bad man. He thinks she has something he wants and no matter how many times she says she doesn’t, he doesn’t believe her. When she finds her mother dead on the couch, she freaks because it should have been her. If she hadn’t gotten mad and went to the library, she would have been home during the attack.

There’s great interaction between family members and Rose has a crush on her new neighbor. But can she trust him?

Ms. Swank twists her tale around and keeps you on your toes trying to keep up. Rose and her family are in danger, the action happens fast, and the matter needs to be resolved in a week or she’ll really be dead this time. The suspense and the danger add to the story line as well as the budding romance with Joe. I turned the pages fast when reading this one and sat and read the whole thing in one sitting. I didn’t want to wait and see what happened; I wanted to know now!

The author did an excellent job on this story and I’m ready to get the next book now. Rose is a great character and I want to know her better.

I really like this author’s work. He writes well, adds enough elements to the story to keep you on your toes, and the story is exciting all the way through. It didn’t take me long to finish the book because I kept turning pages and thinking: What happens next??? Books that capture my attention make me very happy.

Cavendish can be saved if he’s willing to accept some conditions. The only thing that makes him hesitate is that he has to move to his hometown and go to work for the local witch. No one knows for sure if she’s really a witch but she sure has her hand in everything that goes on in town. He really has no choice. He has no job, he is a widower, and he’s leaving nothing behind except sad memories. Maybe going home and starting a newspaper might be good for him.

While Cavendish works to solve an old mystery he works with Jane who has an unusual gift: She can hold things and see and hear the past. She’s the one who finds the body. Not of the missing women, of the man the daughter was supposedly running away with. So if he’s dead, where is she? And why is his old girlfriend hanging around when she has a hitman coming after her? This was supposed to be a quiet job with no trouble. If all this wasn’t enough, now the witch’s daughter has come to work for him. Just one more complication in his life…

The cast of characters is amazing. There’s the witch, her goth daughter, a young woman with a gift, an old girlfriend, an assassin, a mob member, Cavendish’s sister and the man himself. With a cast like that, you can tell the story will be both exciting and odd. If you like a solid mystery with unique characters, give this one a try.

This author wanted to be a cop and her father wouldn’t allow her to do so. This book is a story that’s based on that premise but Maisie refuses to give up. She’s an easily likeable character because she’s so determined and focused on her goals she’s almost not protecting herself from political or physical danger. It’s a good thing she has lots of brothers to protect her and a very supportive family (for the most part).

Ms. Mack has the tone and quality of writing that reminds me of Janet Evanovich. I enjoyed the story and the style it was written in.

Maisie is almost in despair when she comes up with the idea of going into the world of parking enforcement. Her brother, Cash, gave her that idea and she’s going to run with it. She does and it doesn’t take long until she’s cross-wise with the Mayor. That’s not a good start for her…

There’s murder, a bomb, hot politicking and a family trying to warn her off, but Maisie is her own person and she muddles her way through.

The best part, though, is her hot boyfriend. He reminds me of Ranger in the Evanovich books. He’s a mean human weapon who has taught her skills that come in handy in this story and he’s determined to take care of her. What more could you want? Thoroughly enjoyable.

Short stories are fun to read because the author has to get his/her storyline across with a minimal number of words and also needs to make them interesting enough to garner your attention. Ms. Glassman does a very good job with that. She also has a good imagination and can make your eyes stick to the pages as you read. Her sense of humor is also apparent.

The first story is my favorite, partly because the woman is a warrior trained by a wizard and partly because she has a pet dragon that turns into a horse when it’s tired. (Sounds handy, doesn’t it?) She’s trying to make some money and enters a contest to earn the prize: a woman. The man who contracted with her says she’s his bride to be. It’s untrue…

The second story is the one that made me chuckle. If you aren’t Jewish or don’t have Jewish friends, the humor might escape you. The cook is getting ready for Passover when she’s transported onto a space ship. The aliens look strange but what they want is her cooking. They ask her to make a meal. She does; they love it. Now they are going to keep her. So she cooks again and gives them matzo to eat. The results could be expected…

Here you have two great stories that are fun to read and don’t take too long. You could even fit them in during coffee breaks if you read fast. Why not go back to work with a smile on your face?

I like the mix of cultures, the main characters, and the way they work on curing the curse. A bit more length to this story would have fleshed it out better. As it is, you get a bare bones story that reads fast and entertains well.

Beatrice is from America and when she travels to England to finish her genealogy work, her boyfriend is mad at her. She’s amazed to find out she doesn’t care. She’s marrying him to get off world but she’s not sure she loves him. She travels to the priest she talked to through emails and visits the church hoping for more information. He has no more to show her but sends her to the old graveyard that holds her ancestors. When she’s there, she meets Peter, Lord of the Manor. He asks who she’s searching for and offers to let her search some artifacts and bibles he has in the house. She also meets Francie, Peter’s fiancé. When she looks down her snooty nose at Beatrice, she knows where she stands in her eyes.

This is a soft, easy romance where the characters start out by sharing dreams, their own lives details and develop a friendship right off the bat. It’s not far down the road before they both realize they are setting themselves up for failure in their future marriages. How much are you willing to give up for future dreams? How much would you give up for real love? Just what would you do?

Ms. Kneale answers these questions and more in an interesting read with family history and English sunsets and sunrises to keep the pages turning.

At first, it sounded like fun. Her father would invite ten lords from neighboring villages to visit and meet his daughter. She would pick one and then marry on Christmas Day. All these men wooing her and trying to win her heart would be fascinating. Surely she would grow to love one of them.

Ms. Strickland writes a fun story. She creates an environment of suitors that would make anyone barf. They are weak or strong, smart or dumb, some smell, some have impossible attitudes and the one that thinks he’s going to tell her what to do and how to act after marriage doesn’t have any idea he has just driven her away.

Only nine showed up. Not one of them is what Edwina wants to marry. Their only interest in her is her father’s property. Some even call her names when they think she can’t hear them. What she doesn’t know is how dangerous they are.

The touch that made me smile and touched my heart is that after meeting all those “wonderful” lords, she ends up falling in love with a jester! Now you and I both know her father isn’t going allow that marriage. He wants a good life for her, why can’t she love one of the lords?

There’s a sword fight, kidnapping and rescue all before the end of this book. The very last line of the book made me laugh out loud. I really enjoyed reading about subterfuge, the stolen kisses and the plot the two lovers make up. This story is one I’d read again because it was full of action, gave me laughs, and ended up happily. What more could you want?
