However, I was very glad that I’d already read the first book (Fireborn Found) so that I knew the members of the Dark Ops crew. This knowledge made my reading a much deeper and more satisfying experience. That being said, Resonances works fine as a stand-alone and the story is exciting, fast-paced, with many twists and turns in the plot so that the reader is engaged quickly, as the roller-coaster ride of thrills takes off.

I was particularly impressed with Mary Andrews’ sensitive handling of the difficulties encountered by the telepaths in every day life. Imagine what it would be like to be bombarded all the time with people’s emotions. Handling that kind of onslaught without being damaged requires a great deal of skill. The Archangels who serve and protect Rael have their own unique learning curve. They have been used to handling the previous Overlord so that his every need was instantly met, his emotions were handled, and everything ran smoothly. But Rael refuses to give up his humanity. He doesn’t want his needs anticipated and he doesn’t want to lose his own feelings. The Archangels must learn a new way of working, and when Rael insists that they have a right to have their own needs met as well, the Archangels become disturbed and confused, proving that change is never easy for anyone.

This is an exciting and thought-provoking fantasy novel, and I am sure that any readers of fantasy will find it fascinating and enthralling. This novel portrays an alternate reality that is complex and fully realized, and I truly enjoyed the time I spent in it.

Mary Andrews has included three short stories in this edition of her novel so that we get to meet Rael as an eighteen-year-old when he begins his training with his own ship, Nemesis, and then fifteen years later as he begins to assemble his own special team. By the time the novel begins, the reader already knows not only Rael, but also Laynald, a healer as well as an assassin, and Ira, a telepathic teenager. Fireborn Found takes place five years after the last short story, by which time the Nemesis Dark Ops team has become fully functional, a bonding of man, machine, and the paranormal.

The story line is well-crafted and the pace is fast-moving and exciting. There are mysteries to be solved, and the plot has a lot of twists and turns. I found the descriptions of the various planets in the stories to be fascinating. But what I enjoyed the most was the characters and how Rael with his compu-link works with the telepathic Ira and Laynald, who has no supernatural powers at all. Even though these three men are very different, they work extremely well together. It is true that Ira gets a headache if he is too close to Rael when Rael is using his compu-link, and Laynald and Rael both find it difficult to be in situations where telepathic communication is going on, but in spite of their differences, they have bonded together into a complete team capable of carrying out a wide variety of assignments.

This is the first novel in a trilogy and I am definitely hooked and ready for the next two (which thankfully are already published). Readers of all ages who enjoy fantasy with a paranormal twist will be captivated by Fireborn Found.

My heart immediately when out to Eden because she was forced to not only take care of herself at a young age, but also felt she needed to take care of her parents one way or another. In the end, her parents recklessness and selfish behavior leads to tragedy.

Wow, this story took me on an amazing, emotion filled ride. I was stunned as to how quickly the story ended once I began. While the story is targeted towards young adults, I would certainly recommend this to other age groups because there is a lot that will appeal to them and it is truly entertaining. I found the story even challenging some of my beliefs of the afterlife because the author wrote such a convincing story. I sometimes find it difficult to find stories that both myself and my child would enjoy. Until We Meet Again certainly fits the bill, that is why I can honestly and happily give this story the highest rating possible.

Helen’s world is quickly crumbling around her. As she desperately tries to keep her family together, she’s thrust into a world filled with magic, vampires, and other beings. She is very loyal to her friends and family and doesn’t hesitate to stand up and protect others who need help.

Trystan makes an interesting “hero.” He’s definitely not an average vampire. He’s kept himself hidden away for so long, I’m surprised he knew how to interact with another human being at all. The most meaningful relationship in his life seems to be with his car. When he first met Helen, it was hard to tell exactly what Trystan wanted with her. However, as the story progressed, it became clear that he was developing genuine feelings for her and goes to great lengths to protect her from other vampires who seek to use and control her. Trystan and Helen are a very unlikely couple, but I’m hoping they find their way to a happy ending in the future.

The pacing of Camdeboo Nights is a little slow at first. However, my patience definitely paid off. The last half of the book is very exciting and had me on the edge of my seat. A lot happens in a very short amount of time. In fact, the change in pace is so abrupt that the ending felt rushed to me. New characters were introduced and Ms. Dorman hints about big changes that will greatly affect Helen and her friends. When I finished reading, I was left wanting more of an explanation on a lot of things that happened. I can only hope that Ms. Dorman has a sequel in the works that will satisfy my curiosity.

Overall, I enjoyed reading Camdeboo Nights. It is an exciting young adult novel that slowly builds to an ending that can only be described as explosive.

Anthony Karakai has written a lovely fable. The story wanders next to Leonardo, a twenty-year old looking for life’s meaning, for a way to craft his life. His journey takes him first to Costa Rica where he bonds with a group of ex-pats. From there he wanders into South America, meeting Carmen, and coming to Rafael’s tobacco farm. When Rafael’s widow Carlotta meets Leonardo, he seems familiar to her. “For the first time in a while, Carlotta looked out her kitchen window and smiled; the spirit of Rafael was present.”

The story meanders along, and it took me awhile to see the connection between the beginning with Rafael and then the switch to Leonardo. But once I found that connection, the story became magical. I really enjoyed meeting Rafael, Leonardo, and Carmen and it was wonderful to discovery the bonds between them. I put the age recommendation at 16+ just because of the depth of the philosophy and the complexity of the vocabulary. I was surprised that it was listed as young adult because I think that the fable becomes richer when the reader has some life experiences to bring to the reading.

This is a great read for anyone who has wondered about the meaning and purpose of life, either individually or more globally. The topics are handled with compassion and wisdom. I found it exciting to watch “the transcendence of energy through the universe.”

I didn’t get to see Hades and Persephone interact as much as I would have liked in this book, but Zeus couldn’t keep them apart for long. I’ve enjoyed watching them grow as a couple throughout the series, and I was very satisfied with their happy ending.

Ms. Bevis introduces a host of gods and goddesses in this story along with a brief description of each character’s powers. Since I’m familiar with Greek mythology, I didn’t have a problem following all the new additions. However, readers unfamiliar to mythology might be a bit overwhelmed. I assume the new gods and goddesses will make appearances in future installments of the series.

Aphrodite has several chapters devoted to her in this book. In Daughter of the Earth and Sky, Aphrodite came off as very superficial and flighty. Consequently, she wasn’t exactly my favorite character. However, the chapters devoted to her in The Iron Queen provide some much needed insight into Aphrodite’s character that helped me begin warm to her. The fourth book in the series will focus on Aphrodite, and I’m curious to see what Ms. Bevis has planned.

I thought the previous book was emotional, but this one is even more so. The final solution for dealing with Zeus literally had me sobbing. I understand why a certain character chose to make a huge sacrifice, but that didn’t make it any easier to bear. This character’s selfless action definitely illustrated the fact that Ms. Bevis is not afraid to have her characters make tough choices and some of them don’t get a completely happy ending. Even though the storyline involving Persephone, Hades, and their conflict with Zeus has a very satisfying conclusion, Ms. Bevis has once again left the door open for another adventure. There are a few unanswered questions that have left me craving the fourth book.

The Iron Queen is an intense and touching tale. Ms. Bevis has created a captivating world filled with great characters that I’ve come to know and love. I can’t wait to see what happens to them next. I highly recommend The Iron Queen as well as the rest of the series to readers looking for a gripping young adult fantasy.

There were so many characters, some of them only making a brief appearance, and I wasn’t sure what the actual plot was until I had reached the half way mark. Even then I found it hard to keep track. The idea behind this story is good, but maybe if it had been told from one or two points of view it would have been clearer what was happening. By the end of the book I had worked out the main plot of the story, but believe I’d need to read it a second time to be sure.

Despite my previous comments the writing is good and the author must be congratulated for keeping the thread going throughout the book. The scene descriptions are well done as are the conversations between the major characters, plus the author obviously knew her genre as this book is definitely paranormal.

If The Bite Doesn’t Get You, Then the Fever Will

Author Tina Smith has a unique, mythological take on werewolves, as well as a different tone to her writing. This story is deep, quite dark and its pace is quiet and deliberate. Instead of racing through to book, we prowl, noses down in the night.

Lila is an interesting heroine. In the first book she was a typical teen, at least to begin with, worried about little more than fitting in, finding friends and what to do on a Friday night. Now, though. her life has changed dramatically. Not only is she keenly aware of the supernatural world in her backyard, she’s part of it. And that world killed the boy she loved.

The first book really revolved around Lila, and the other characters were very much in the periphery. This book isn’t the same. While Lila is certainly our main protagonist, we see much more of others this time, especially Cressida. She’s someone I really liked in book one, and I feel the same here. She’s strong, determined and mouthy … and is working to pass those traits on to Lila as they train.

The evil in this book is stronger, and instead of seeming very isolated this time, it feels bigger. Clearly the last book was a tiny battle in the ultimate war this story seems to be heading to. Fever is like setting up a game of chess… all the pieces are placed on the board here, and the pawns are in motion.

Don’t go in to this book (or series) expecting to have a constant adrenaline rush. It doesn’t work that way. It’s more like the waves of the ocean, sometimes quiet, sometimes loud and huge, but always powerful. There were times I was a bit frustrated when the story slowed, but in retrospect, it was necessary. And it taught me to be content just enjoying the words instead of needing constant action. Ms. Smith’s words are well chosen, the book well crafted and enjoyable.

I recommend the series to older teens and adults. It has a something for everyone.
