Like many other horse focused series, this feels a bit like the type of plot expected in The Heartland Series, or for younger watchers The Saddle Club.

I really enjoyed this style, and read this one quickly, which was made easier as this story plays out like a show, and the detail and characters were both realistic and vivid enough that I read most of this in one sitting! The story does deal with some more mature issues teens face, other than the ‘meat packers’ there’s also issues of physical and alcohol abuse and some teen/YA type sexual awakening dealt with in the story. It’s nothing not mentioned in other books or shows, but still isn’t a completely ‘clean’ read either.

As mentioned above, I really liked the writing style used, and look forward to reading more like this from Ms. Bell’s work! While this is YA, adults can enjoy this too, and this actually is one of those stories that doesn’t really feel ‘too young’ if you enjoy The Heartland Series type TV show, then this has a similar feel!

I picked this one up without having seen or heard any mention of it, but suddenly many of the people I follow in the book community started talking about it, and I could wait to start reading. They were right! I loved reading Nerissa’s story, which is well written, and impossible to put down!

Mrs. McKinley really knows how to hook a reader, and even from the first page, I found I wanted to know more, and couldn’t get enough! I flew through this one, and loved every minute, from the witty dialogue to the suspense and surprises, this book has a little of everything, and the romance added an interesting balance to all the chaos.

When I found this one, I was wanting a story that combined mythology, romance, and plenty of emotions to pull on my heart-strings, boy did Siren’s Call: Cursed Seas deliver! It also introduced my to a new author, and as mentioned, was a title I hadn’t heard of before, so it was extra exciting how much I enjoyed it!

This story is perfect for fans of paranormal/fantasy romances written for upper YA readers who enjoy siren/mermaid lore, and stories set on or near the sea! I loved reading this one, and highly recommend it to readers who are looking for their next read! You know a book is good when it has both characters you can’t help but love, and those you love to hate! With complex personalities, and some well placed snark, these characters take on a life of their own, and I’d love to see similar stories from Mrs. Amy McKinley in the future!

The author has created a story that captivated me from the first page. The writing flowed well and I had to know what would happen next. I also got emotionally invested in Charlotte, Liza and Lydia. I liked them, even when I wanted to shout, don’t eat that paint!

The characters of Lydia, Liza and Charlotte were well-planned and made the most of the situation the Radium Girls went through–they tipped their brushes to paint watch dials with paint that glowed in the dark. They also painted their jewelry, painted their teeth and as a bi-product, ate the paint. I liked these characters and would’ve loved to have read more about them.

Julie, the modern day character, had her issues. Now, she’s a young adult who didn’t get the chance to go to college because she got her mother’s house out of foreclosure. So, yes, she’s got some issues. She’s a older teen, she’s the bread-winner in the family and she has some communication issues common with teens – she thinks everyone knows what she means and she knows everything. The author created the character in an interesting manner, but there were a few things that happened to her that seemed a bit cliche.

Still, I liked this book, and while I don’t read much YA, I recommend this one. Give it a try.

The arc of the romantic plot line was perfect. I adored the chemistry between Darcy and Grey. They had so much in common that I immediately knew I wanted them to remain in each other’s lives either as friends or a couple. As they got to know each other better, I became even more convinced that they’d make the perfect match. Not only did they share the same hobbies, they had the same values as well. That is, they were both far more interested in quietly doing the right thing no matter who noticed than in getting credit for it. Their strong senses of integrity were well matched and also made me love both of these characters even more than I did when I first met them.

Darcy was such a relatable and interesting protagonist. Most high school students don’t need to worry about helping their moms pay rent or keep food on the table. As tough as these added responsibilities made her life, they also shaped her into a hard-working and trustworthy young woman. She took life seriously in a good way. When she did have opportunities to relax, she dove into those experiences with joy. I wanted her to finally get a happy ending after everything she’d been through.

I was also impressed with how sensitively and honestly Ms. Ouimet handled Quinn’s substance abuse. He was Darcy’s only sibling, their family was low income, and they honestly didn’t have much of a social safety net at all. All of these things made an already difficult situation even harder to cope with. There was simply not enough time, emotional support, or money to deal with all of the negative consequences of his addiction. I’ll admit to blinking back tears a few times while I read this story because of how much empathy I had for this family. They were facing awful circumstances, and the author did an amazing job of showing how Quinn’s choices affected not only his own life but the lives of his mother and sister.

(Not Quite) the Same Old Song is a must-read for anyone who has ever had personal experience with substance abuse or who wonders what it feels like to love someone who is in such a self-destructive cycle.

The pacing started off quite slowly. To be honest, I had trouble getting into the plot in the beginning because of this. As interesting as it was to meet the various characters, I would have liked to see them deal with more conflict early on so that I could see how they responded to the ordinary challenges of life before the mass shooting began. I’m saying this as someone who was invested in the subject matter of this book and who really wanted to give it a higher rating.

While this story was about a student who was plotting to shoot his classmates, it was about so much more than that as well. I can’t go into much detail about the other storylines without giving away spoilers, but I was pleased with how many other conflicts the author explored once the pacing picked up. The characters were similar to real-life people when it came to the many different things they had to juggle in their lives.

No More Dead Kids should be read by anyone who is interested in the warning signs of a possible school shooter.

There were times I wanted to strangle Anna, but then… she is a teenager with all the teenage angst that comes along with the age. Plus, she saw her mother (controlled by a demon) die, so I figured I should cut her some slack. But things kept getting weirder and weirder for Anna, her dad, her friends, and the whole town.

The story is told generally from Anna’s POV with some limited looks into a few other character’s thoughts, so you really get a chance to know Anna well. And, for the most part, I loved her. She was strong and dealing with a lot of things in a more mature manner than one might expect. After her mom’s death, her dad pretty well seems to have lost his way – hoarding and barely keeping his business alive. On top of it all, at school she gets a raw deal with many of the kids calling her “Spook Girl” because of her dad’s business.

It’s not all butterflies and rainbows in this book – expect some gritty moments, some dark moments, and some inappropriate behavior on the part of some of the adults in the town. In a way, it reminded me of a cross between Buffy the Vampire Killer and Warehouse 13 (two of my favorites, btw). I would so love to see these characters again!

I’m having trouble not giving away too many spoilers, because there’s a lot of action, a lot of twists, and some surprises along the way (and I have to admit some tears were shed as well). I’ve put this author on my list to check out her future works. Well done!

I loved reading this, if the first was fast-paced and full of action, this one is explosive and impossible to put down! I loved seeing the character development in this one as they strive to win, no matter what that means. Both side are determined to win, and for Cole’s father…he’s confident that in erasing Cole’s memories of Thea, he
already has. I loved seeing Thea as she fights for her soulmate, and must decide on a plan to get him back, once and for all.

This novel isn’t a standalone read. Memory Walker is the first in the Inflexaen series, and Memory Seeker is the second book. Readers really need to read them in order.

I loved the deeper look at the Inflexaens and their abilities in this one, plus we get to know more about their people and history as well. This series is easy to read, but hard to forget, and I’m excited to see what happens in the next book!

I got a little bit of ‘I Am Number Four’ vibes, plus some ‘Whisper’ by Lynette Noni while reading this, but since I enjoyed both series, it makes me all the more excited to read more of this series too!

If I had one complaint, and the reason this isn’t 5 easy stars, it that there’s one point where things become slightly rushed, making it hard to follow the action and who was friend and who was foe for a short time. It clears up, but that one part does disturb the easy flow the read of the book had. It does lead to an interesting ending though, and after reading this, I was excited to read the next book, always a good sign!

Overall this story was full of steam and mystery, with action and supernatural abilities that served to add even more to the story. If, like me, you enjoy YA romance with a dash of Sci-fi and characters with super-powers, you won’t want to miss this one!

Subplots involve relationships, and people must act unselfishly at times. Also, they must be creative problem solvers. This is escapist literature, but it has underlying messages as well and causes one to think about certain things. Their dialogue is revealing. The writing, as in the other books of the series, is descriptive and straightforward. The world-building is exceptional. An atmosphere of falling darkness, of threat, paints a vivid picture and brings out the bold in the characters.

I have read the other three books in this series and was greatly looking forward to this last book. It was not a disappointment.

This story is dark and disturbing but also intriguing. The writers developed an attention grabbing plot accompanied with very well developed characters. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first started reading the book. The location started out at a high school campus so my first thought was not another lack luster teen romance. I was definitely wrong! The writing was very much on point and I can’t think of anything that I would have done differently. The way the authors gave such in-depth reality to Beau’s character, his thoughts, and his actions took great skill and research. Beau is a character to be feared and the way he controlled his actions to reach is ultimate goal was sick and manipulative. Beau is a ticking time bomb. His parents know and have seen the monstrous side and yet they let him go on as if he didn’t have a problem. His father is a workaholic, his mother is a drunk and while they think Beau has himself under control, Beau’s evil is slowly being revealed.

Beau has his sights on his girlfriend’s headstrong twin sister, Leslie. Beau commits unspeakable acts to several women victims and he ensures their silence with threats and intimidation. There is sexual violence and torture that may not be suitable for some readers. I don’t take violence against anyone lightly but I understand that some details had to be mentioned to give the full depth of Beau’s madness. Without the scene it would have been left to the readers imagination of what level of madness Beau could go to. Beau’s sick obsession is written and plotted out so well. Dawn, Beau’s girlfriend, is in love with the idea of being with someone of Beau’s caliber and unfortunately for her she does not see him for who he truly is. Leslie sees the type of guy Beau is and tries to warn her sister. This difference causes a divide between the sisters.

Will the Moore daughters ever get past their differences? Will the perfect image Beau has been portraying ever crumble?

I enjoyed the writer’s writing style so well that I will look to see what other books they’ve written. I highly recommend this read for readers that are able to tolerate violence in their young adult mysteries.
