After his mother finds some place she deems “safe” for them to stay, she tells him about a knight of the Blood Guard. It’s her job to keep the Pure safe. That’s why he got all that training in self-defense and survival skills, he realizes. When she sends him off to take a train to meet another defender, it doesn’t get easier. Those following him are waiting for him. He doesn’t know who’s good or who’s evil at the stage. And all it does is get worse.

He sees Greta on the train and realizes he knows her from school. He doesn’t like her much. Soon it might not matter how much he likes her. If they don’t stick together, neither one of them will survive. Every time they almost get away, they get caught again…

You won’t be bored reading this one. I’m also sure there will be a sequel. The battle isn’t over yet. And I’m glad because that gives me more to read.

The one character I had trouble liking 100% was Cruz Morales. And, I’m not sure how much of it was the way the character was drawn or because I kept picturing Cruz Castillo from the old soap opera Santa Barbara and having issues reconciling this character’s behavior with that character. I had trouble seeing what Molly saw in him. Perhaps if I had read the novella that was a prequel to this, I would have understood that better. By the end of the book, however, he had grown on me and I was rooting for him and Molly.

I will definitely be searching out the rest of Ms. Gamble’s works.

As soon as I read the first paragraph I couldn’t wait to find out what happens to Ryan and his friends next. Due to a large cast of characters it took me a fair amount time to get to know everyone well, but I was pleased with how the main characters change as a result of their experiences. The payoff is well worth the wait, though, and I’m glad that I stuck with them through the more plot-heavy sections of the book.

Gender stereotyping distracted me from an otherwise gripping narrative. It was difficult for me to understand why Ryan so quickly hands over the care of his baby sister, Julia, to the preteen girls in his group given how traumatized the toddler was after the death of their parents. This pattern soon repeats itself as more kids join them despite Julia showing a strong preference for her brother. Based on this reaction as well what I learned about Ryan’s value system in other scenes, it would have made far more sense for him to be his sister’s primary caregiver.

Even pacing and a plot full of twists kept me glued to the page. There are a lot of dangers awaiting Ryan and his companions, and I really enjoyed seeing their responses to all of the dangerous things that await a civilization that has just lost every single one of its adult members. It became even more interesting once I realized that most of the characters don’t have any previous experience with the new skills they need to learn to survive. How they attempt to gain this knowledge provides some of the most entertaining scenes in this book.

The writing style of this book suggests that it is meant for the 10+ age group due to how quickly certain problems are solved, but the inclusion of so much violent content bumps my recommendation up by a few years. While most of it isn’t particularly graphic, there are multiple references to abuse and non-accidental injuries that are too intense for younger readers. Some 10 and 11 year olds may be mature enough to handle those scenes, although I would definitely draw the line at giving this story out to anyone younger than that.

The Promise is an excellent introduction to post-apocalyptic fiction for young adult readers. This tale also has great crossover appeal, though, and I would recommend it to adult fans of this genre as well.

However, there were times, especially when things were told from Timber’s perspective that I would forget who the “I” was as his voice was actually very similar to Chevelle’s, in spite of the obvious differences. The novel could also use a bit of editing, especially in the matter of pronoun usage, but thankfully there weren’t too many goofs, such as saying “…against Wicken and I”, to put me off.

I really like the three main characters, especially Chevelle. She is very strong and she has a good heart. The pacing of the story is good, building tension as the story progresses, and I think that the portrayal of the adjustment to a new life is done realistically. I enjoyed all the descriptions of the spaceship and its facilities. The Achlivians have a very advanced technology, and the reasons for their abductions finally become clear as the novel concludes.

The ending is a real cliff-hanger! The author has set up the series in a very suspenseful way and I hope that the next book is published soon. Fantasy readers are in a for an exciting ride with Displaced.

Arden is an extremely complex seventeen-year-old and her character is very well developed. I liked her and suffered along with her. She makes some poor choices, but then she also makes some very good and mature choices, just what is to be expected from someone who is nearly an adult. The supporting characters are also fully developed and individualized. Even though I believed Arden and supported her actions, I could also see how these actions looked to those around her who were trying to care for her.

The novel is a fast-paced action story and I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. The mystery was very well conceived and it was easy to believe that Scott was really dead on one page and that he must still be alive on another. The author had me hooked from the opening chapter and I didn’t figure it all out until the very end.

The setting is extremely well done. The winter scenes were so real that I had shivers. I really felt as if I were right in the middle of the action, trying to use snowshoes, avoiding the ice, and so forth.

Mystery lovers of all ages are in for a real treat and a most exciting adventure if they pick up Thin Ice. I guarantee that once started, you won’t stop until the end.

The setting of the novel is a space station and its surrounding asteroids and while I obviously have never lived in such an environment, I felt as if I were a part of this world. I was especially taken with the descriptions of the Aleyni, the race which is native to the planet on which the space station is situated. Many of the space station personnel feel that they are superior to the Aleyni and refuse to have anything to do with them. But the Aleyni have a very rich culture and they also can offer many goods and benefits to the space station inhabitants. I thought the author really handled the mixing of the cultures with sensitivity and grace.

The plot is fast moving and exciting, chasing terrorists through the asteroids, searching for a drug lab, and mining ore in deep caverns. There is enough adventure to satisfy any reader and the plot twists and turns, providing many surprises. The ending is satisfactory, but it also could be the beginning to another adventure and I really hope that Martin’s story will be continued in future novels.

Science Fiction lovers are sure to enjoy getting to know Martin and the rich world of the Aleyni.

Rigel and Marsha need to work together against formidable odds to save not only the small town of Jewel, Indiana, but possibly the entire earth.

This is a fast-paced exciting story, but it is also one with a great deal of heart and the characters are very real. I felt as if I were walking into any small high school filled with teen angst, but what separates this novel from others are the deep secrets within Marsha’s past. She comes across knowledge that would cause most people, even those a good deal older, to panic, and she does have her fear-driven moments, but she also is able to handle difficult situations with amazing courage.

Readers who enjoy suspenseful fantasy and coming-of-age stories are sure to enjoy Starstruck. The author indicates that this is the first in a new series, and I, for one, hope that there are many more novels to come.

I really liked the premise of this novel. Gemma has been trained her whole life to deal with the fact that she is an averter. But when her first Aversion seems to have failed because Russ Tanner doesn’t want to forget, Gemma’s life suddenly becomes much more complicated and dangerous.

I like Gemma a lot and her character seems very real and well-developed. She works hard to stay as invisible as she can at her high school, never drawing attention to herself, living the life of a loner. But she has her father and together they have a good life even if they do move every four years. Nevertheless, Gemma is also a normal teenage girl and the life she is forced to lead isn’t at all easy for her.

The plot is riddled with mysteries and just as Gemma solves one mystery, several others pop up in its place. Gemma finds help in very unlikely places and I was totally captivated by this story. It is not only a great fantasy adventure, but it also raises a number of extremely interesting philosophical dilemmas.

Fantasy readers are sure to enjoy this story filled with rich overtones, and I look forward to reading the next in the series.

While not everyone will share Patrick’s obsession for all things science fiction, I imagine other readers, young and old, will be able to relate to Patrick’s struggle feel comfortable in his own skin.

Unfortunately, Patrick’s life becomes much more complicated when he’s chosen to be a superhero. His childhood is brought to an abrupt end as he finds himself facing Sutekh, who has had years to formulate his plan to take over the world. Patrick only has days to learn how to use his new powers. The physical and mental exhaustion from training with Anubis as well as the strain of keeping secrets from his family give a realistic feel to the fantastic events of the tale. Consequently, I was able to fully immerse myself in this thoroughly enjoyable story.

I do wish some of the other characters had been a bit more developed. Patrick’s life is full of eccentric friends and family that have a lot of potential, especially his best friend Galen. I have a feeling Mr. Morgan has only scratched the surface where that particular character is concerned. I hope to learn more about Galen and the other secondary characters in the future.

Rebirth has a very satisfying conclusion, but Mr. Morgan leaves the door open for other adventures. I enjoyed reading about Patrick and his first exploit so much that I’m already wondering what Patrick will face next. Will his next challenge be other Egyptian gods, creatures from other mythologies, or something else entirely?

Reading Rebirth was a pleasure. It is a fun, fast paced tale sure to delight readers who enjoy superheroes and the classic struggle of good versus evil. I’m definitely looking forward to the next installment in this exciting series.

In the year 2008, fifteen year-old Emily Grace (Em) discovers a secret hiding place under a wooden plank in the attic of an old house in Petersburg. It conceals a 150 year-old-diary belonging to Sarah Chamberlain, the previous owner of the house. Carefully turning to the last entry, Em’s interest is piqued by the mention of missing confederate gold and a murder mystery. She slips the diary into the pocket of her capris.

As she reads the diary, Em is touched by Sarah’s deep love for her husband, Robert. Emotionally, Em’s life is spinning out of control and the diary is a welcome distraction. Each day her faith slips further and further away as she blames God for the many trials and tribulations she has had to endure. After rereading the last page and Robert’s senseless murder, she has one more reason to doubt God’s love for his creation.Em slips the diary back in her pocket planning to return it to the attic before helping her mother clean the old house in Petersburg. While scrubbing black scuffmarks off the kitchen floor, Em has an emotional meltdown airing her list of grievances, including Robert’s murder, before God. Ms. Norkus mixes Civil War history, time travel, slavery, and a modern girl all together in a story that I found fascinating. The more of the diary she reads, the more Em gets caught up in Sarah’s life. When she finds out Sarah’s husband dies at the hands of the military, she is devastated.

The author makes Em a young woman who has begun to fall away from God and her church. She doesn’t believe God is there. None of her prayers get answered. Reading about Sarah’s husband Robert dying makes her angry and she shouts at God, giving Him her whole list of grievances. Em is fifteen and I remember what puberty was like; I cried all the time. Em carries a lot of anger. What she didn’t expect was to be transported back in time. Apparently God does listen. Going back 150 years means things are quite different there. She finds Sarah and they take her in but she has no real plan to save Robert.

The author works with the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, so her information about the times and practices of the era are accurate. The only hesitation I had about the story was that Em changes history while she’s there. And, any change you make in history would affect the future, but the only thing that really changed in the future was the diary and a sign. I had a difficult time believing nothing else was affected.

Overall, this is a very nice read and young women readers should find it fascinating. There’s history, the beginning of romance for Em and it has a happy ending. It also might lead them to read more about the Civil War era. The Christianity is lightly stated and not overwhelming. Why not give it a try and see what you think?
